Flipping and pitching mats is the best way to get bass out of mats. You typically have to use a weight over 1 oz to do this and that is why it is called punching for bass. This video breaks down everything you need to know about flipping mats!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

I never knew a good bass angler who aced his English final exam! Your ain't lying when u preface your videos by stating "stay tuned, it's gonna be a good one"! The only thing better than learning from your experience succeeding out on the water, is for me to climb into my boat and get humbled by a day out on the water!!! Your advance preparation and concise and smooth presentation does not go by unnoticed! It's appreciated and refreshing!

Great video, dude. It's rare that someone breaks it down like you do. I pitch and punch grass all summer up here in Northern Wisconsin, and I kept track for a good portion of the summer a few years back and for me, there's no difference in hook/land ration when using Snell or double Palomar... and I've got hundreds of lakes where catching 50+ fish in a few hours is not a big deal. I've heard people explain the physics behind it, but the Db. Palomar gets it done just fine ~ Experiment and Decide ~

My favorite kind of fishing... 2 summers ago I went to Florida for vacation and brought my gear and rented a boat and went out flipping and punching and cought a 9 pounder down there. I'm from ny and it's pretty hard to find them that big from my area, I've gotten s 7¹/² here but that is it, plan on heading up to the st. Lawrence river this summer for some killer small mouths, hopefully I get get some fat sallies as well. Love your channel man, give it another 2-3 years I think you will b at that tactical bassing stage brother...

Does water temp come into play as far as when this technique works better than others? Maybe even weather conditions, such as raining or windy? Is a flipping hook crucial or could I get away with 3-4 strait shank hook?
@BassFishingHQ
@BassFishingHQ 2 года назад
There can be a mat flipping bite at anytime of the year. It seems that sunny days where the bass really get under mats tend to be the best conditions, but that doesn’t mean you can catch them under a mat during cloudy conditions. There are several good 3/0-4/0 straight shanks that will work

I don’t get why people use that heavy of line for bass. The reels don’t even have 50 or 65 lb drags, so why would you need that much power from your line? Why not use like 30 lb?
@GardensoftheAncientsHerbal
@GardensoftheAncientsHerbal Год назад
Give pressure on the hook set make a short fast soft motion but don’t yank then immediately lean back with a slow anchoring motion. Then the hook will go in and stay. Use bigger hooks if you know there are huge bass. Smaller hooks if you can’t see them. I use no more than 50lbs test. Good braid in my opinion shouldn’t break off if you have good combo unless it’s outright sharp rip rap then I throw on a fluorocarbon leader. Yozuri 30lbs test has never failed me as a tapered leader even when pulling in donkey redfish or small shark so it’ll pull in a bass through a mat. If the water is super clear I noticed the fish ignore heavy braid if its visible. If the hook color is too obvious you won’t get many fish.
@alexlawless6846
@alexlawless6846 2 года назад
10 lb test is perfectly fine. My brother caught a 60lb catfish on 10 lbs test. On a 5 ft pole. Like 3 days ago. I have trouble breaking 10lb test sometimes too 🤣🤣

Great advice for a beginner but the only thing I disagree with is the snell knot yes you get more hook ups. But the snell knot only works when your punching vertically when you are punching and pitching a long pitches the snell knot goes through the bait and is a more of a headache so when your punching vertically snell all the time but when you have to get that bait away from the boat tie a palmar knot works better and your not going through $200 worth of baits

I'm verry new to punching why do so few guys use a punsh shot? Doesn't is solve alot of problems with wight ect?
@BassFishingHQ
@BassFishingHQ 3 года назад
To be honest man, I think that people just haven't done it enough. The punch shot definitely helps with hooking up with fish, and sometimes it might be the deal to have a bait that is a little bit above the bottom. I know that when I have used a punch shot that your bait tends to get hung a little more when bringing it out of a mat, but it might be worth it to hook up with more fish
@nicoduplessis5435
@nicoduplessis5435 3 года назад
Like I say I'm verry new at this but I'm always looking for something different. I did see if you make it a cross between a toyo rig and drop shot it helps with hang ups. Pls give it a trie and make a video.

I agree with what he is saying but for me, if the mats are so thick i need a brick for a sinker and a steel cable for a fishing line, i don't really want to fish there in the first place... Maybe a Hand Grenade or a Shotgun???
@GardensoftheAncientsHerbal
@GardensoftheAncientsHerbal Год назад
Use a light weight but use weighted soft plastics. If the plastic itself is heavy itself than you can change weights by changing soft plastics and if you have only one or 2 poles you don’t have to cut and swap weights

this is why i carry split shot bullet weights. They are super hard to find for some reason but i can slap a good cover weight at any weight since the box has a variety.

Idk man I give them the beans so I can get them out, I lose very little fish. And the weight isn’t a big issue for me, a lot of flippin bite in NY the fish eat it 90% of the time on the first drop out of reaction bite, that heavy weight makes the rate of fall faster and can trigger them big bass.

I let the fish take the bait and feel that thunk or downwards pressure. Reel down, its okay for the bait/lure to move in the fish's mouth. Because, a real bait fish, cray fish,, etc. will naturally try to escape from the bass

I hate to disagree with you but the reason you're tearing the fishes mouth and losing them is because you are using 65# braid. Braid has no give to it. You're not fishing for shark, you're fishing for bass. I've been pitching the matted grass for well over 30 years and have never used over 20# big game line. I was pitching the matted grass long before it was called punching. I also don't use a Snell knot because I've never needed it. I have almost a 100% hook up rate with a standard improved clinch knot. I've caught 100's of bass up to 10 pounds under grass and have never broken one off. That includes dragging them out when wrapped in a ball of hydrilla. Seldom, if ever, do I even lose a fish. The rods that I use are only 6 1/2' medium/ heavy action. Using a longer rod does not give you leverage over the fish, it gives the fish leverage over you. If you don't believe me, put a long wrench on a nut and turn it. Also, with an 8' rod, every time you twitch the bait, you move it further with the longer rod, which is sometimes too far. If you want to teach people how to pitch matted grass, don't make it so complicated. It's simply fishing through matted grass instead of on the edge of it.
