6. The Age of Reason, 2nd Great Awakening, and Millerism

The end of the Age of Reason and beginning of the Age of Anti-Reason in the early 19th century saw the introduction of a variety of new theories as to the meaning of the book of Revelation. The most important voice in this movement was that of William Miller, who used a historicist approach mixed with the emotionalism of the Second Great Awakening to produce a precise calculation as to the time of Christ's return. While Miller eventually died disappointed, his contribution spawned a number of related movements that shared his conception but reworked his timetable. This lecture surveys this extraordinary moment in Christian history. For more free resources, please visit www.brucegore.com.

I appreciate how you recognize the Miller Movement sought Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and wanted to see Him. I appreciate how that implies that Seventh-day Adventist continued to seek Jesus today. I appreciate how you note some of White's ideas came from others.

Fascinating. We seldom hear all this Christian history as if the Reformation is the end of the changes. Movements like Abolition and Temperance were so important to US history. Thanks for helping me see the details of these amazing rivers of Christian history. I have many friends and family in the Unity Church. Now I understand its sources.

By the way the reason I got into this series by Bruce Gore was because a personal friend of Finney's and also the reporter who transcribed most of Finney's lectures and sermons (they didn't have recorders) wrote a commentary on the book of revelation. His name was Henry Cowles. His book is the only one that I have read that has similar views to that of Bruce Gore. Henry Cowles commentary on revelation ha very much of the same content as Bruce's lectures here and I found it to be profoundly convincing.

I find it fascinating that Miller (and others like him) took the NT phrases such as 'soon' 'near' and 'at the door' to refer to Christ's Second Advent....but then he applied them out of context to his own generation! If he had applied the principle of 'audience relevance' he could've avoided his errors. Those phrases were meant for the 1st century in which they were written. BTW thanks Bruce for your additional 'sunday school lessons' tagged onto the end of these lectures. Very encouraging words.

Didn't Jesus do the same thing in Matthew 24? He answered their question about the temple being destroyed, and the SIGN of his second coming. It was present and relevant and future. We are talking about prophecy, and to be contemptuous and say interpretation is only needed, applicable to a near relevant fulfillment seems to be blinded to a possible another fulfillment.

@@Deacondan240 Why would the disciples be asking Jesus about his second coming? At this point he hadn't died, let alone risen, let alone returned to the Father, so why would they be asking about a return to earth? They are asking Him about His coming into His kingdom.

@@GoreBruce Thanks, this is a subject I have studied off and on since the fall on Communism in Russia. Pretty convinced of premillennial perspective. The recent jump by James White into Postmillenialism got me into a discussion online with a HS friend who was a full time minister for many years. He was the one who suggested your series after I was requesting resources on the 7 churches of Revelation. Currently reading a book by Chuck Missler on the 7 churches. Recently I have come upon another application of the 7 churches in that each relate to one of the seven seals and was studying them more. This view was a view presented by Nelson Walters in a book of his that I read a couple of years ago.

Finney did use emotion, but he also preached sound doctrine. His teaching was of the quality of those preaching in the first awakening, and he was not in favor of a lot of the excesses of his day, and he spoke against it.
@WoundedEgo

Finney was not about stirring up emotions of happiness; that's misrepresenting him. He taught that preaching should serve to arouse a profound awareness of sin, that would "worry the sheep to seek the shepherd."

That the earth represented the sanctuary was the popular idea at that time and not something which William Miller came up with. As the disciples were mistaken in regard to the kingdom to be set up at the end of the seventy weeks, so the Milerites were mistaken in regard to the event to take place at the expiration of the 2300 days. In both cases there was an acceptance of, or rather an adherence to, popular errors that blinded the mind to the truth. Both classes fulfilled the will of God in delivering the message which He desired to be given, and both, through their own misapprehension of their message, suffered disappointment.

This is off the point a bit, but, in your opinion, what is the proper context of genesis 12 “I will bless those that bless you, I will curse those who curse you.” My take is that it is specifically to Abraham in the context of his line eventually bringing forth Messiah and once that was fulfilled, it was done. I get really tired of Christians quoting it as if for today for Israel. Thanks
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce Год назад
The promises to Abraham were to Abraham and his 'seed.' Paul tells us (Gal. 3:16) that the 'seed' of Abraham is specifically Christ. Paul also tells us that those who belong to Christ are Abraham's seed through Christ (Gal. 3:29). The promise of blessing and curse applies to the seed of Abraham. The ethnic Jewish people have no claim under the New Covenant to be seed of Abraham (cf. Rom. 9:6).

@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 4 года назад
The literal expression is 2300 'morning-evenings' and reflects the morning and evening sacrifices offered in the temple. The time frame is thus a little over 3 years, the time between between the desolation of the temple by Antiochus IV and its cleansing (for which the feast of dedication was celebrated) under Judas Maccabeas in 165 b.c.

The text that says - a woman should not teach nor exercise authority over a man ( 1st Timothy 2: 12) another translation is - a woman should not teach nor exercise authority over her husband. That would seem more logical as the next text says in 13 - for Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 and Adam was not deceived...15 she shall be saved in childbearing ---which all centers around husband and wife relationship ...the word used for man can also be translated - husband. so, it has nothing to do with a woman not being able to teach in church---but from what I see - ordination for church leadership is for a man only.

Love this series I really do. 41:10 or so he says that the second great awakening was primarily an appeal to the emotions. This is a great mistake and anyone who has ever read Finney's Systematic Theology or any of his sermons can easily see the intense and engaging logic and philosophic consistency of his works. Even his critics were forced to admit it. Please take note of the works of Finney's peer and friend Asa Mahan whose philosophical works are second to none. His treatise on The Science of logic and Natural Theology and A Critical History of Philosophy are monumental to say the least. Finney engaged the reason head on and preached the law for weeks on end before ever giving an invitation and seldom would have to (contrary to popular opinion about him) because conviction was so overwhelming among potential converts that they would beg for salvation. Please don't over simplify that movement which has earned the name "The Second Great Awakening ".

Hegel developed his theory from the shoemaker mystic Jacob Boehme. Considered him the father of german philosophy. Largely from his expansion from alchemical sources. The dialectic and synthesis. Hegel developled his main philosophies of dialectica ofc that. And further schools from there. Marxism is one branch. And Marxism has developed into different formsof praxis. The one thing they are most adept at is indermining enlightment liberalism. Captalism and individualist social cultural constructs. Thus, deconstructionism. Critiques that turn drmocracy in on itself and republican forms of government. Thus, one way is everybody is a victim of something relared to color, ethnicities , class, etc... institutions

Here's the thing: Kant's epistemology is consistent with Jesus's epistemology, which runs, straight as a laser, from Socrates cup of hemlock through the Cross to Isaac Newton's F=MA to Kant to Hegel to Apollo 11, and, in between Kant and Jesus is Tertullian, who employs what would become Hume's rules of evidence to establish the Roman source of "Christian" as a sociological coalition in the larger political milieu of Judea and Israel. Tertullian intuited the Trinity as the onological novelty it is. Paul didn't invent the Trinity, and Jesus demonstrates how to employ supernatural powers for fun and profit. Jesus is a paradox. What Hegel and Marx are talking about "contradictions" in historic forensics are generally dynamical relationships in a chaotic field that lets the system work the way it does. A mistake Marx makes is that you can reliably disable dynamics with the scientific method. Paradox occurs in nature where metephor fails. It's like the Bell Curve: the tails on either side are not parallel with the base line, but the tails and the base never intersect. The castle in the sky. Like Supply Side economics, Marxism is a castle in the sky. The US Army Command and General Staff College are Hegelian in aspect. It's how they planned D-Day right down to the platoon level. Hope is not a method. Jesus is demonstrating method involving a human in a working relationship with the Holy Spirit and dominion over the Spirit of God. The storm in Mark 4 and the Spirit of God stopped romping around like a naughty St. Bernard puppy and sat down, still as a cat. With the epistemology of Kant, Tertullian identified the Trinity and the evidence that somebody in Palestine thought Jesus was the Son of God and that Rome needed to know why. Tiberius introduces "Christian" to Rome sometime between 30 and 37, when he died, and it would be my bet that he first heard the term Christian in connection with Sajanus in some way, so he made his petition to the Senate something between 31 and when he recalled Pilate in 36. And then he was suffucated by Sajanus's replacement in the Praetorian Guards. Tertullian also says somewhere that if all the covert Christians in the Empire stopped working, the Empire would grind to a halt. I have no doubt that every soldier in the Legions had heard about the Resurrection before it got to Tiberius. There is no question in my mind that every soldier on either side of the Milvian Bridge were Christians, which is why the XP had such a devestating effect for Constantine's purposes. In the final analysis, Constantine was the only person converted to Christianity. It was the moment Mohammad goes to the mountain without waiting for the mountain to come to him. The epistemology of the scriptures is inerrant, straight as a laser from stem to stern. Kant's epistemology is the synthesis of Rational Idealism of Plato and the systematic empericism of Aristotle appled to the civic duty of Socretes' ethic and Romans 13:1 - 7. Hume is a sub-set of Kant.

Weren't the leaders of the Enlightenment and the architects of the French and American Revolutions heavily involved in secret societies such as Freemasonry, Order of the Oddfellows, Knights Templar, etc? I believe they had a lot to do with the way Western history unfolded. They also infiltrated the churches, and continue to do so to this very day. They were the big movers and shakers.

What did Deist mean during that time? (Etymology)
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 5 лет назад
Etymologically, the word simply means belief in a deity. It's meaning during the Enlightenment had reference to a deity who was the first cause, or creator, of the universe, but who then stepped out of the picture, and is not actively involved in human affairs.

Thank you. I ask because I know that Benjamin Franklin stated he was a deist but clearly would not have agreed with this definition. See, archive.org/details/ChristianLifeAndCharacterOfTheCivilInstitutionsOfTheUnitedStates/page/n133, pages 135 and 136. Item 4 from his letter is clearly a God who is involved.
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 5 лет назад
Franklin claimed to be a deist as a young man, but in his later years appears to have moved quite noticeably toward a more traditional view of God. This was likely the result of the influence of George Whitefield, with whom Franklin maintained a friendship, as well as Franklin's increasing sense in his later years that success for the new Republic of which he was a founder depended heavily on the providential oversight of God.
