When this shelving set arrived from the manufacturer I thought that I may have to send it back as the box that it came in was pretty damaged. The shelves did not come in a weight tested shipping box like most items I receive. It came in a non durable packing box one might see on a warehouse shelf, which is then normally placed inside a shipping box to send to the customer. Because this box was not very sturdy, the very first thing I noticed when I opened it was several broken plastic pieces. The top shelf was also askew from the others below it though all of the shelves were zip-tied together for packing and shipping safety. These plastic pieces turned out to be for shipping purposes only, but the initial impression of what I received was not a good one. Once unpacked, however, all of the pieces that I did need to use to build the shelves were in good condition and undamaged.
I have put together shelving units like this before, but this one took a bit of trial and error to complete the building process. While the manufacturer does include directions in the box, there are a few things that are not mentioned that might make this a bit challenging at first. I will tell you that everything you need to put this together, except for maybe a rubber mallet, is in the box. Between each shelf you will find four plastic pieces that are meant to keep the shelves in place during the shipping process. These need to be removed before sliding the shelves onto the uprights when building as they are not meant to part of your final shelf set when complete. This is not in your directions, and I had to get that clarification of what they were for directly from the manufacturer because of that. Also not really shown in the directions, the manufacturer includes 4 hooks affixed to a plastic square, which I am assuming is to allow you to secure the shelving unit to a wall, though I have no idea how you are supposed to attach the plastic part to a wall to anchor it. There are also 4 S hooks not explained in the directions. I also found 4 small plastic plugs that are neither referred to in the directions. The best I can tell is that they would be replacement pieces for the caps at the top of the top uprights. Another problem I found with the enclosed instruction sheet was that they tell you to place feet into the bottom tube as the first step instead of the castors. There are no adjustable feet included with your hardware making steps 1 and 6 a bit confusing.
To save you the time I spent having to figure all of this out, I’ll try to give you a rundown on how to build this. The bottom legs come with 4 easy-glide durable wheels with 360° rotation to attach to them. 2 of the wheels are lockable to keep the shelving unit in a fixed position. Be sure when you are building this shelving set that you affix these castors so that your lockable wheels are in the front so that they will be easy to reach when locking and unlocking. Also, there are actually only 4 uprights that these castors will screw into. Locate those 4 uprights first and screw in the castors before assembling your shelves. In your hardware also locate the 8 double sided screws. You will want to take 4 more of the uprights in the box and place one screw on the top and one screw on the bottom. These 4 uprights are going to be your middle pieces so set them aside. The remaining 4 uprights will screw into these to finish building your shelving unit upward.
To start building the shelves, take the 4 uprights with the castors attached and attach the enclosed plastic clips to the height you want your bottom shelf. Choose one of the shelves to slide over the top of the legs and slide down onto the clips. The small wire guard around each shelf that helps to keep items from falling off the shelf should be facing up. You can gently tap the shelf with a rubber mallet if you feel that you need the shelf to settle in tighter over the clips. Once the first shelf is in decide what height you want your next shelf to be and repeat the process for the second shelf.
At this point you will want to take the uprights that you have attached the double screw hardware to on both the top and bottom and screw these into the existing upright. Repeat attaching the clips and placing the shelves until you have the next 2 shelves settled in at the height and spacing that you need. Take the final pair of uprights and screw these in. Place your last two shelves with the last of the clips and you're ready to make the final adjustments.
Once completed I used these shelves in my pantry to hold lots of food items and it seemed to do just fine with the weight of the groceries. All in all, the shelves are fine once you figure out the nuances of the assembly process.
