4:32 more effective of you step right side , positioning your body to not get in center attack area , on side that your enemy not reach his attack accuracy

@maskedfishing7168
@maskedfishing7168 3 года назад
I by far am not a master of the katana and please correct me if I am wrong. I asked the same question because that’s what people go for a quick hit. I was told by someone that practice Iaido that they don’t strike at legs because it leaves the head open to strike. In a real life sword fight it was very common for both fighters to die however you will always get cut……always
@chopstick1671
@chopstick1671 2 года назад
@@maskedfishing7168 you wouldn’t *always* get cut. If both parties value their safety and want to survive, the chances of one person coming out unscathed are higher; whereas as soon as one person doesn’t care about their own safety, it becomes a far more dangerous ordeal. Geometrically speaking it’s true that the legs are not the most logical target, as you need to be closer to hit the legs, than you need to be for any other target. Thus if someone just cuts your legs without guarding, you can cut them in the head, or stab them, or whatever. This shorter range weakness is also your best defense against leg attacks in my opinion. You can void with your front leg and cut at the arms or head, since you have more range doing that. I don’t like the guards where he parries with the point down straight down almost. Its a very weak parry I feel like, and it’s too bunched up, if you will, to change into an immediate counter attack.

is it possible to replace the shomen uchi block with the yokomen, but with an angle which only a small part of the sword is covering your men?, I prefer to do it that way since you can follow up with a dou strike quickly. because the shomenuchi block leaves your dou open.

A boktu is a formidable weapon in the trained hands, and offcourse it can be lethal if you want it to be, but mostly in self defense it can do serious damage,incapacitation,concussion,broken bones and general pain compliance, I personally avoid fights if I can, but if the situation arises , I prefer to use my oak boktu, rather than a katana or a dagger. Not saying it cant get you in legal trouble, for instance if you hit someone hard on the fore arm or shoulder, kote or kesagiri. it WILL break bones, and unless its established as self defense you will get a sentence, that's why I do my best to avoid fights. the only problem is that a dou strike with a bokken wont do much damage because its a soft area, it will hurt but will not be effective with a wooden sword. but very effective and lethal with a sharp sword.

One day after training for years you wake up go to the dojo , and enter a shiai match and you have that moment, holy crap I am sword fighting well, it is funny how its so random, when you hit that next stage, then the shiai after, you are not as good because the next stage is harder. this cycle is never ending, sure at a certain level you can win almost every match but you know you are not where you wish to be regardless of your years and hard training, kenjutsu is such a never ending sea.

I was told to zone out the eyes and focus on the outline...i.e opponent's whole body, use both perception and sight and don't get caught in small details. if you focus on specific part of the body (arms,sword,shoulders) you will get hit.
@chopstick1671
@chopstick1671 2 года назад
That sounds more like boxing if you ask me. Swordfights are very complex, and you can’t focus on every part of the enemy’s body at once; so mostly you have peripheral vision to help you, and just reflexes. Most important I’d say is to be aware of where their sword is at all times. Then I’d say second most important is their feet. Power generation often (should) start at the feet, and the feet also indicate if someone is balanced or not, and thus if you might want to try and overrun them into grappling for example. But mostly, don’t focus too much on where to look.
