My son and I decided we wanted to get some In-N-Out, so what better way than taking a Tesla Model Y Long Range Dual Motor on a mammoth 600 mile road trip. We travelled across 3 states (Washington, Oregon and into California) and had a blast charging on the Supercharger network. What was the longest single day EV road trip you have ever taken? Share your experience in the comments.

Agree 100%. I did plenty of road trips with my parents when I was younger and now doing the same with my kid. Exploring the country by car is the best, especially together with my son.

Hmmm, love a road trip myself, but you could have stopped in Keizer, OR (near Salem) or in Grants Pass, OR for In-n-Out burgers. :) Love the videos, and I have to admit, there's something about spending some special time with a son. Keep up the good work!

Such an epic road trip! The Tesla Model Y did well and Supercharging seemed easy. Watching this people should not worry when they decide to road trip their Tesla.

Glad you liked the video. Yes, the Model Y is a road trip beast. Thanks for watching.

I really enjoyed the video. With Evs it is fun to make these kind of road trips. For us the longest trip was vancouver bc to Los Angeles in less then 24 hours and jasper to vancouver in one shot.
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
Vancouver to Los Angeles is on my "to do" list, I have not yet decided if I want to go straight to LA on the 5 Freeway or take my time and take the Pacific Coast Highway. Planning this trip for the summer.

That sounds insane!!!! Also thinking of road tripping to Jasper / Calgary / Drumheller. Any tips?
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
I did a road trip from Vancouver to Jasper in 2021 and have the road trip series on my channel. However, since then the charging infrastructure has improved. I would suggest charging on Electrify Canada all the way to Golden. When you arrive in Golden, charge to 100% (or close to it, depending on the battery you have in your car) and that will be enough to take you to Jasper. In Jasper, they now have four 50kW Flo chargers right by the Via Rail station (next to the Tesla Supercharger). When I was there they had none and I was forced to charge on Level 2 which took a while. Then in Calgary you will have plenty of choices (the Electrify Canada station is reliable). Drumheller, on the other had, only has Level 2 options from what I can see on PlugShare, so I would suggest getting a full charge in Calgary. Finally, if you are on a road trip and charging a lot with Electrify Canada, consider buying the monthly membership. It lowers your charging cost and is only $4 per month (you can cancel when you get back home).

@@LeftCoastEVThanks! I did watch your video on that trip. We just got a 2023 ID4 - and I need to road trip it! I think we’ll do a trip in CAN before we try the USA.

That’s what I did. First road trip was Canada and then we went to the US. Congrats on your ID4 it’s such a great EV. When you come back from your road trip let me know how it went.

It’s a great drive, we did yvr to SF- LA - Vegas and back last year in our model 3 LR and couldn’t believe how easy it all was. Just gotta trust the car
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
Exactly this. I always tell other Tesla owners (who are afraid to take the chance on long distance travel) how easy road trips are in these vehicles. Trust the car and you will be fine.

Great video Filip and Austin! I'm also thinking of road tripping down south from YVR. What charging apps do you think are the most important for me to download before I go?
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
Glad you liked the video! If you drive a Tesla, then just follow the built in trip planner and use only the 250kW chargers (there are plenty of them). If you drive a CCS equipped EV, then I suggest downloading PlugShare for charging locations and A Better Routeplanner for planning your trip. Those two are a must have. Then apps for charging providers like Electrify America, EVGo, ChargePoint and EVCS (those are the most common charging providers on the West Coast of the US) should be set-up and ready to go before you embark on your road trip. Finally, one more tip: if you are booking a hotel, make sure it has Level 2 charging (I know I can filter by EV charging when using the Booking.com app). You will then be able to fully charge your EV overnight.

I'm probably going to do a similar trip with my son soon. We're in Northwestern Ontario and he really wants to go to a Bucks game in Milwaukee. Which is about 1000km. After watching your video I'm looking forward to it!

Nice trip. My favorite burger place. When we go to Portland, I always drive to Salem to get my double cheese burger and animal fries. what did it cost in Supercharging? thanks for sharing. Have fun camping
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
Oh yes In-N-Out is definitely a great place for burgers and the Salem location is closest one to the Canadian border. Total supercharging cost was $46 USD. We only used the 250kW Superchargers and has no issues.

Great video. What sort of speeds were you doing on the motorways?
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
I was driving the speed limit so anywhere from 65 to 75 mph (105 to 120 km/h) depending on the State and section of road. We made very good time as there was no traffic driving through Seattle and Portland.
@smmtavares
@smmtavares Год назад
@@LeftCoastEV Great stuff. So, at those speeds, what would you say the 'motorway range' would be?
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
I would say about 240 miles or 390 kilometres. We charged to 100% at the start of the trip and arrived at our first charging location with 9% left having driven 216 miles or 347 kilometres. We had to deal with rain and colder temperatures and having the heat on in the car. Summer range could be even a bit more than what we got that day. The dual motor Model Y is very efficient and has awesome range.

Do you carry a spare tire for long road trips?
@LeftCoastEV

I don’t. I have a fix a flat kit that I use. On top of that I have one of those roadside assistance/towing memberships if I’m really in a bad spot.

One question. Only 214 miles on a full charge ? Shouldn’t you be around 290-300 in the LR ?
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
When I arrived at the charging location I still had 9% battery left. If you take this into account and drive as close to 0% as possible then I could have done about 230 miles max given the weather conditions along my route (lots of rain) as well as highway speeds. You can get more range in city driving or along secondary roads not highways. Range is always dependant on many factors, but it would be hard to go to the 290 or 300 miles you wrote about.
@bt4b4
@bt4b4 Год назад
@@LeftCoastEV oh thanks, here it’s advertised as 330 miles, but real number is 300ish.
@LeftCoastEV
@LeftCoastEV Год назад
US website advertises 330 miles but that is wishful thinking of you drive like I did on the highway at highway speeds. Even 300 is a stretch. I don’t think that the Y can get 300 miles driving constantly at 70mph. City driving or secondary roads? For sure. Turn off HVAC and you might get that magical 330. But honestly for me the range is enough. My bladder cannot go further than about 250 miles anyway!
