Hey everyone...I'm moving from 6.5 Creedmoor to a 6 BRA cartridge and thought I'd discuss what's involved in a move like this. Enjoy!

Excellent breakdown. Everyone wants a shiny new toy and think “a new barrel isn’t so bad” without thinking about all the other parts of making the switch.

I bought a 6PPC rifle for short range benchrest. Annealeze has some wheels that work with short cartridges for $25. I’d try the commonly used Varget powder for the SD and SD issues. You can probably sell your H4350 excess powder.

Great video. Very real world info, switching calibers is a lot more expensive then most people first consider. I shoot the 6 bra, it has been really easy to load for. For powder reloader 15.5 has worked very well for me. Alex wheeler chambered my barrel so I am using Lapua brass. I need to get out to Texas and Oklahoma and shoot some prs matches. With 6 Dasher Alpha brass, a special reamer is required for the loaded OD of the neck. The "standard" Dasher reamers do not give enough clearance. I do not know if BRA is the same, but that may be something to check into. If you're not getting consistent bullet release due to lack of clearance in neck area of chamber, erratic velocities would make sense.

Hey Justin! Good point. I got the specs from Preferred Barrel Blanks (the reamer specs) and from Alpha (the brass specs), then called both to talk things over...Great people on both of those companies. They said everything looked good. I'm hoping it's just that new brass and the real tell will be when I go through my fired brass reloading process. We'll see and I'll certainly keep the channel informed. By the way, I just found 10lbs of 4895 yesterday and ordered it, so that may make a big difference as well. Thanks for watching Justin!

Couple things. Untill that brass is fire formed to your chamber don't worry about the ES SD numbers. 2. Load the first firing light to yield the brass which will preserve primer pocket life. 3. Get some drop tubes from area 419 that will screw right on your funnel and that will help eliminate compressed loads and its wicked fast, just dump the powder in, no trickling into the case. 4. Lube your bullets with a dry lube when reloading new brass or even once fired brass. What happens is that new brass with a clean bullet will cold weld to each other and upon firing you will get erratic pressures and horrible ES SD numbers. I wash tumble my brass so I lube everytime and im running about 2 to 3 thou neck tension. Once the carbon is built up in the neck you don't have to lube any more unless you tumble wash your brass. 5. Hornady and Sierra bullets are poo and don't give the best ES SD numbers any ways so don't expect the world from them, work with in there allowable tolerances
@The4GunGuy
@The4GunGuy 2 года назад
Hey Joe! Great advice and I follow most of it. I used to lube my bullets but stopped doing so...BUT, I like the idea of lubing for zero and first fired brass. I have to say that the Sierra matchkings have been very good bullets (and all I could find at the time!) and I'm quite happy with them. Agree that the SD's and ES's with them aren't the best, but still sub 7 on both so I'm good with that and very accurate so far out to 1,100 yds. Thanks again for the great input and for watching my friend!

Any reason why you didn't just go with 6br instead of bra (or brx which uses the same die as the br)? I went from 6.5CM to 6br and it was super easy. 30 gr Varget, Berger 105s and CCI450s in Lapua brass and got around ~2800 fps with single digits SD and good groups. Added a tuner (ATS) and tightened it a little bit more. This was on the recommendation of a Pro shooter who is one of my mentors and I did zero load development. Was an amazingly easy transition.

HI Eric! Yeah, that's a really good point. The guys I shoot with were all going BRA, so it was a little of "follow the pack" and if they were having good luck why not. I finally found some H4895 yesterday so I'm going to wait until that arrives before I do any more loading and we'll go from there. I was leaning towards the BR because I didn't see any BRA brass or dies...Then I saw Alpha had it and the dies became available so I just dove in. We'll see how it all works out though. My straight 6mm BR loves Reloader 15. I shot a season of F-Class using 105 Berger VLD’s and Lapua Brass. I was 4th over all. My velocities are very high for a straight BR. I am averaging 2950 fps. No pressure signs. I do have a bushed firing pin. My problem is I am out of Reloader 15. I do have an 8 pound jug of N140. The VLD’s do like to be jammed into the lands. Kreiger 28 1 in 8. I have another BR with a Broughton. I have not shot it yet.

I think it depends on what node you want to shoot. Bra can handle the 2900 fps node lots easier than the Br, just like the dasher can handle the 3000 fps node easier than the bra.

When is it necessary to fire form? Is it when your changing the shoulder angle?
@The4GunGuy
@The4GunGuy 3 месяца назад
Hi Sammy! When you get new brass it will fire form in about 2 - 3 firings to your chamber. When you change barrels to a "pre-fit" barrel that is to SAAMI specs the brass will fire form to it. Now, a BIG 'BUT' HERE; If you have a custom chamber job on your barrel and you go back to a pre-fit barrel, you need to make sure that your case will fit the new pre-fit barrel. With that said, using a gunsmith to cut your new chamber will be of great benefit, since you can give him a piece of your CURRENTLY FIRE FORMED BRASS and he can get the chamber cut pretty darn close to that, which will minimize fire forming to the new chamber. Hope this helps and thanks for watching my friend!

AR Comp eh? I'm always looking at alternatives and will look into this one. It has decent temp stability at .77 compared to the great temp stability of H4895 at .23 and that .77 puts it at the middle of the temp pack so not too bad. I can't find it's burn rate on the chart, but if you're using less then it has to be faster than H4895 I'm assuming. Thanks for the tip Treece!

I hope you saved some of your brass. You will probably get 2000 rounds out of the barrel so that is only 4 firings. i would just use 200 pcs being you are using someone else's reamer. I'm not too familiar with the 6BRA. I have 3 6BR's. I had a Krieger 1 in 10 twist (31") on one rifle and shot Berger 108's with N140. I could shoot bugholes at 300 yards. I now have a Brux 1 in 8 and am shooting Berger 108's over 31.5g of N140 at 2900 fps mv. Today I shot a 5 shot group that was .466 in 20 degree weather. The bullet will stabilize better when it gets warmer. For some reason I could never get Varget to shoot better than N140. It shoots good just not as good. H4895 gave me the lowest ES but not the best groups. Reloder 15 shoot great also. I would use a long drop tube instead of crunching powder. With low neck tension, the bullet can "grow" if you crunch. (check it an hour after you loaded it and see) Good luck.

Hi Brett!! Man, thanks for the great input here. I have H4895 which is my "go to" load, so sticking with that for now. I also have bought some IMR 4895 and plan to use that in the Summer when the temps are more stable...I'll work up a load for that when the time comes. I've looked at N140 and bought some N555 when things were tight and that's all you could find.
