*** Wind noise during the target shooting portion of this video made hearing words impossible and is annoying, so graphics were written to replace the spoken words. Sorry for this inconvenience.
Finally, finished load work up on both rifles and their cartridges. Range data gathered, testing 5 separate loads. (2 shots each). This data will allow me to fine tune future loads for Varmints, Range fun and Medium game hunting. Ranges and Ballistic calculated data verified for 100 yards to 500 yards. Both calibers are impressive because of the newer and higher Ballistic Coefficient bullets. Slight edge for retained foot pounds of energy to the 6mm ARC. #6mmARC #65Grendel

I love my grendel with 18" barrel. My Hornady 123-grain SST reloads seem to be the most acceptable for my rifle. I don't own a 6mm ARC so I don't have any personal experience with it but looking at your video as you stated they are quite similar in velocity. The grendel has been a great performer for sizeable white tail and mule deer up to 250 yds with hornady 123 SST reloads. Two white tails and 1 mule deer down with one shot each thanks to the accuracy provided by that load. Thanks for sharing your video and your thoughts. It's greatly appreciated.

Interesting thing is that although the Grendel starts out with more energy (using your velocities for 120g Gold Dot and 103g ELD-X), beginning at 25 yards, the 6ARC carries more energy down range. The maximum range which delivers 1000 ft·lb with the Grendel is 375 yards vs 425 yards with the ARC.

Hi Dave, great videos. I also have both calibers as well. Both in and AR platform and both in a bolt gun. I’d pick the Grendel for game such as deer, but for long range stuff, I’d hafta choose 6 ARC. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for your kind words. I have not yet been able to test the ARC on deer sized game. But according to Hornady's ballistic calculator, at my velocities, the ARC will retain 1,000lbs of energy 100 yards farther than the Grendel. I do not doubt that because I have harvested allot of animals with the .243 Win. caliber bullets.

Not sure what information you hope to gain by comparing same bullet weights, unless u are limited in the amount of lead that you can shoot. Ballistically speaking, if you wanted to compare two calibers with the same purpose in mind, you'd have to pick different weights. Meaningful matches could be: Same BC, compare velocity Same Velocity, compare BC

I have also found that different rounds affect a rifle differently. I've have also found that it depends on the shooter. For example, I am a hunter, like Dave. So, I do not zero a rifle with a lead sled. There is no way I could drag that set up to the public hunting land that I use. Imagine hiking through a jungle. I zero with the rifle to my shoulder. I have found Federal to be really good. My MVP KR 308 Thunder Ranch likes Federal Nontypical Whitetail .308 W 180 grain. About 1/3 to 1/2 MOA with a medium bull barrel and a 1:9 twist. My TC Compass II in .308 W likes the Federal Fusion 165 grain with a 1:12 twist in a standard barrel with muzzle brake. Averaging 1/2 inch. In fact, it shot a measured 1/2 inch fresh out of the box it came in. Even though the factory stock was fine, I put in an Oryx chassis because I also like chassis.

I wish you would have done some gel test or penetration test, that’s where rubber meets the road. I have grendel rifle, however I don’t think I missing out much not having a rifle in arc, so my next endeavor is building a bolt gun in 22 creedmoor, so I can get additional practice shooting long range.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
You are not missing out on a Grendel vs ARC. There are allot of other Gun channels that do gel tests for you to examine. To me those tests are subjective and only seem to validate the type of bullet construction and their purpose. My tests are based upon terminal performance on harvested game only. I can't show that on RU-vid.

Great video and as a ballistics guy in a former life I can't fathom why Hornady decided to neck the grendel down further when they could have just spend more time developing a higher BC projectile for the 6.5 since it serves a dual purpose in the creedmoor as well and that has a huge long range following.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 года назад
My 2 cents worth: 1. The ARC is a special purpose development in concert with the Dept. of Def. designed to be used in an AR-15, to provide greater range and terminal effect than the 5.56. The 6.5 Creedmoor is in a AR-10 and may replace the 7.62 and that debate is still ongoing.. 2. The cartridge dimensions of the ARC had to be specialized so a Grendel cartridge would not chamber in the ARC and the ARC would not fire in a Grendel chamber. (Because the cases are similar and the case heads and BCGs are the same.)

The Grendel is a Bear Creek Arsenal complete upper and BCG. The Arc is a complete Sanders Armory and BCG. See my previous videos for a more complete break down of each rifle.

243 has killed many a deer with no problem and the ARC seems to be very similar in velocity to the 243. Love the Grendel though. Something about the 264 that flies very well. Both can get it done.

Damn those or some long barrels …. Haha yeah I’ll just build a AR10 with a 18” barrel in 308 that will do anything I will ever need and probably still be a smaller footprint than a ar15 with a 24” barrel haha Im sure that those modern high BC bullets will outperform the older options like 308 or 243 past 500 yards but… you shouldn’t be shooting at game farther than 400 yards and if you know that’s what you or going to be doing shit I’d go get my ole ruger m77 in 270 . Definitely seems to be a marketing craze of new cartridges and chamber’s every year that or the new have to have thing but idk I don’t plan on hunting with a AR15 ever anyway maybe if I didn’t already own good hunting rifles I’d consider it but then again idk I don’t want to be that guy at the hunting camp who shows up with a AR15 when everyone else has a browning Remington ruger etc… just looks a lot classier to have a real rifle for hunting rather than a prs nrl competition gun could you imagine the shit you’d catch you wound or miss a animal with a decked out AR haha I’m guessing if it’s a private hunting camp you might not get invited back into it. At least in my experience that’s how it is in every hunting camp I’ve been involved in or visited . I’ve never been excited about punching holes in paper and developing bullets for that so maybe that’s where these new AR15 loads are marketed mainly.

Wow, you certainly have some strong points and opinions. Because I am "Old School", most all of your valid points are covered in my other videos. As far as 24" barrels are concerned it is a personal preference that helps to ring out the maximum potential of all my hunting rifles. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

The 120gr gold dot is not the best bullet for the Grendel is got a poor BC. You seem to have a habit of putting the best 6mmARC bullets up against the worst 6.5 Grendel bullets and then try and hide the poor 6mmARC accuracy by only going 2 shot groups.

I hide nothing. The 2 shot groups were clearly explained. Thanks for your comment and opinion.

Load data would be good information. The case is virtually the same for both rounds. How much powder is pushing these out to get those speeds? Even though the muzzle speed is close to similar it will not be as close down range because of bullet diameter. The farther out the more the difference. It is like comparing oranges to tangerines. Both are good cartridges but they are good in different categories.

@@justflylow Agreed. See my playlist for load data and work up for each caliber. Shooting farther out, without necessary foot pounds of energy for terminal ballistics has a low priority for me. With the smaller case capacity rounds, shot placement is paramount for hunting medium sized game. Thanks for your comment.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I see where you are coming from. At the range you were shooting at they are very very close in dynamics. So on the other hand why wouldn’t you want the six arc because it will do better at longer range. On the other hand you could put a much heavier bullet in the 65 Grendel and have more punch closer in. For hunting that would be ideal as long as your shots are not gonna be long range. I will check out your load data and thanks for the video it is very interesting.

@@justflylow Thanks for the kind words. I really like the ARC. It is new to me and other than shooting Rock Chucks in my previous videos, I have not been able to give an informed opinion as to terminal performance on deer sized game, Yet.

Hi Dave, great videos. I also have both calibers as well. Both in and AR platform and both in a bolt gun. I’d pick the Grendel for game such as deer, but for long range stuff, I’d hafta choose 6 ARC. Keep up the great work.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I agree. I have been a big fan of the Grendel for several years, but the more I shoot the 6mm, I am more impressed every time I go to the range. It’s extremely accurate, and in ways it’s more versatile. And you’re right, Hornady has developed some impressive bullet designs over the past few years that make the 6mm more lethal at farther ranges.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I was wondering if you have tried the 100 grain Hornady btsp. They are available about everywhere and have done well for deer in my 243 in the past. I just haven’t ordered any yet.

@@bradstephens4915 No but I did test other .243 bullets in my ARC and had to set them deeper than the book listed COAL for them to chamber in my rifle. The ARC is designed to use the newer longer sleeker 103, 105 and 108 grain bullets from hornady. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UVzVuGlqhII.html

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 Very nice testing. One other question: which powder do you feel is best for this caliber? I’ve tried Leverevolution and CFE 223. I feel like the CFE 223 is better for the gas gun, but Lever is has some very good velocities out of my bolt gun. I’ve gotten almost 2950 in my bolt gun with 108 ELD-m’s using Lever. But I haven’t tried the CFE in it because I was saving it for my gas gun because it seems to burn cleaner.
