After studying all the data I can access regarding the 6mm Creedmoor, 6mm ARC or the venerable 243 Win, I will choose my next rifle, action and platform. I will try to explain in this 10 minute video, the various 6mm caliber parameters to base my future purchase decision on. Hunting is always a primary purpose, followed by long range fun and ease of handloading...Leave a comment on your preferred choice. #6mmARC #6mmCreedmoor #243winchester

Just an FYI if it helps.... the 243 with a 1: 10 twist will also shoot the 103 eldx. I'm for the 243 over-all. But the 6mm creedmoor is a great round also. But you can't drop down, probably past a 75 to 80gr bullet. And the arc, in my personal opinion out does the 6.5 Grendel. It's faster etc.

I just bought a Tikka T3x in 243 Win and finished working up a wonderful load using the Barnes 80 gr TTSX running 3378 fps. With all the new calibers being developed the 243 Win is not the sweetheart of the ball but it is probably the best crossover caliber out there. I am very excited about using mine on everything from Deer and Antelope to Coyotes.

A few years ago I had a shoulder injury and had to ditch my regular 308 or 30-6 because of recoil or I wasn’t gonna be able to hunt. I had a 223 bolt action but for taking whitetail at 150 to 200 yards I just wasn’t comfortable with it. I had missed some work because of my injury so $ was tight. Ended up getting a cheap 243 savage axis but I didn’t splurge for the heavy chrome lined barrel and chrome bolt. Stole a good scope off another gun and I was blown away by the light shooting and accuracy of the round. At first I was wondering if 100 grains was enough but the first time I watched the partition pass through a big buck and just fall over I was sold. My shoulder ended up healing but I still find time to use my cheap 243 because of how effective it is. The rifle was cheap but the round is amazing!

In my way of thinking, I think that the 243w was created as a very noble hunting rifle, but with a broad spectrum (like antibiotics), that is, a rifle that can be used to hunt vermin, as well as to hunt larger animals, it seems to me. that one must define more for the use that is going to be given, and customize the use of the caliber, in my case I really like shooting and also the hunting of larger animals such as deer and pigs, so I put a barrel on it with a 1-7.5 groove pitch to shoot heavier bullets with a higher ballistic coefficient, and I achieve better firing groups and more energy in hunting shots...

Nice subject... for reliable feeding in a deer hunting gun I would choose the 243 because of the shoulder taper and short bullet seating length outside of cartridge. For coyotes I would probably choose the 6mm arc in AR platform for the quick followup shots on misses, on running shots, or multiple coyotes. Creedmoor for competition setup. They will all hunt, and all can be reloaded to be accurate and consistent.

If you're handloading, there's a great 6mm cartridge that you're overlooking. The 6x45mm. It's based on the .223 so brass is plentiful, is therefore AR & bolt gun compatible, and can push an 85gr TSX at 2800 fps. The 6x45 is simply a .223 case necked up to a .243 bullet. It's been around since 1965, but no company has yet to standardize it.

My experience as a manufacturer, the 6mm ARC is by far the most accurate caliber I’ve ever seen. They are all great calibers, but my money goes to the 6mm ARC for my personal rifle. Coyotes have no issues with the 108 gr match or 103 gr Precision Hunter. My 6mm ARC in an AR shoots sub 1/4” all day. My 243 AR isn’t far behind either. You stated the numbers. 6mm ARC should be a lot less of a barrel burner than the other two. Also, since shoulder surgery that’s something I have to watch out for as to how that relates to increased recoil, a big deal to me. That’s why I have a couple of 6.5 Grendel and why I built a 6mm ARC (which I haven’t shot yet). These may be my two AR’s going forward, if ammo prices will drop a touch. Of course, I reload, too.

@@looks4stuff121 Not yet. See my last video using a 24' barrel on my 6.5 Grendel with 107 Sierra TMK. Also I just watched a video that explained that higher BC's are not necessarily better for rifle consistency/accuracy and kind of forced me to seek more information, regarding such things as longer bearing surface, secant vs tangent ogive. Remember my priority is hunting first and target shooting second, so bullet construction and how it acts for terminal ballistics (termination of the animal) sort of may lead me to a different caliber. Yes the 6-ARC in an AR-15 does intrigue me as a short range hunting cartridge along with my 6.5 Grendels. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K_UxaFfx0Rg.html

Possibly, I have been looking into that very fact. But there still is the case design. Although I have not yet made my decision. (See my recent videos on the 25-06, which is superior for hunting IMHO.)..The 6MM creedmoor case design does allow for the better powder to seating depth for the longer sleeker bullets. And the 6 ARC still can be shot in an AR-15. Thanks for your question.

I've been using a 243 Winchester way before those other cartridges were even invented. I rebarreled my 308 bolt guns that were collecting dust to a 1/8 twist custom 243 Barrel and have 26 and 28 in. The factory 243 barrels are either 1 in 10 twist or 1 in 9 and that limits you to a 90 grain or lighter a lot of people shoot 100 grain flat base with that. Once you get over 90 grain you get random wobblers. 6 mm Creedmoor and the 6 mm Arc have Factory Barrel setup for high BC Bullets. if you want to shoot the high BC Bullets out of a 243 have to get a custom Barrel. When you take on a new cartridge then you got to buy a bunch of new brass new equipment. Right now everything is in short supply and probably will be for the next several years so my opinion is stick with a 243 if you already have a couple of those then you can just add to your 243 brass and everything is interchangeable and get a custom Barrel that lets you do everything the newer cartridges do. I make 243 Winchester out of 308 by running it through a 7mm08 die then a 260 Remington die then a 243 Winchester die so if you have any range brass in any of those cartridges it could be made into 243

Your post is timely indeed. Finally got a call from a gun maker today for my next 6mm/.243 rifle and it should be here in 10 days. I like my 243's and have other calibers to fill the void for all ranges of game. Bullet makers these days seem to develop newer high BC bullets to meet the demand of the long range completion community and we have reams of data available for reloading and Ballistic analysis that wasn't available, even just 10 years ago. I am a hunter first and recreationally shooter second, but it is nice to have confidence in the smaller calibers stretching out to 500 yards and maintain sufficient lethality on game. Thanks for your informed comment and for watching.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I assume you know this but I will mention that there are prefit barrels available for Savage and Remington bolt guns and I think you might find them for other actions by searching. They use a barrel nut to lock the barrel into the proper headspace with a headspace Gage. I started using a 243 for hunting and have been using it for hunting for decades. Updating to a 1 and 8 twist 243 win Barrel well let you shoot the full range of 6 mm bullets. Odd numbered rifling grooves and lands have less bullet deformation and better gas seal. Example 3 or 5 lands. I built a AR-10 243 win and had to do a lot of trouble shooting to get it to work properly, so the AR-10 243 platform is not necessarily plug-and-play.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 3 года назад
@@Mike-xi4zt Yes to all you said. My only Savage 10 FCP does not have a barrel nut like most savages. It is a dedicated rifle for 308 win that shoots better than I can, so no barrel changes there. I did look into custom barrels for my AR-15 AR-10 's and the wait time from custom barrel makers was quoted as 3-6 months so I opted for a complete package instead. See my 308 win playlist to see the complete work-up . Stay tuned for the new "Mystery rifle" coming soon. Thanks again for your comment.

Agree, but it does achieve respectable ballistics with 12 grains less powder with the same bullet and was engineered for the AR-15 platform. The ARC does have a definite weakness as a hunting rifle past 300 - 400 yards.

I’ve shot 100 gr, 103, 105& 108. I’ve shot metal out to 1000 yds with the 108 and killed a buck at 500 yds with the same bullet ( 108 hornady match) I know but I’ve used match in other calibers as well. Information from folks like you help me to cut some corners on development of this chambering. As far as hunting deer size or larger game, I will almost always choose .270 to .350 large capacity chamberings. I know it maybe overkill...But out west shots are often across areas longer than my ability. Love the Grendel and 6.5 Creedmoor for intermediate range shots.
