Dude wow I been following you for like 6 months on mining and having a hard time troubleshooting my 2002 7.3 excursion and came across your video about your 7.3 truck. Helpful yes sir. Keep living the dream good sir.
Brandon, Thanks for adding this to your channel. I was having the same issues with my 2002 F-350, when I watched your video I decided to replace the IDM before anything else, after installing the new part my truck fired up on the first try. Thanks again, you saved me a lot of time and money! Jim
Just got a 99 450 this morning. I haven’t tried this yet,but I watched your video this morning before I looked at a “hard start” truck and it definitely helped me decide to get it! I hope this fixes it 🤞
My 7.3 has the symptoms you mentioned in the video. I replaced my icp sensor, glow plugs, relay and block heater. And its still sluggish to start and wont start at all in cold weather. I appreciate the video and now i know it has to be that module.
I would like to say this video had I have seen it would have save me a lot of money I replaced relays glow plugs all about my truck would not start it is a 2001 F2 57.3 after watching this video I did replace my DM and that fix the problem but I also did replace all injectors which came to $2800 with all change I am thankful for this video just wished I had seen it earlier thank you
Would your truck start sometimes and not others? I am troubleshooting my 97 f250 that is giving me a battery light on the dash but has no codes, has a new alternator and new batteries but still shows the light
Nice video. Man I wish I would’ve seen this video a year ago. I was looking at a 7.3 that was dirt cheap because of hard starting. he only wanted 2200 for it.
Thank you for this info I am having the same problem on my 7.3 with 494,000 miles and I have not found why. I am going to order the IDM ASAP, thanks again.
Holy cow man, my 2000 is almost exactly the same boat. 230k miles no start/hard start unless it's warm or with some starter fluid. This is gonna be my hopefully last diagnostic for this issue, already did glow plugs alternator and both batteries. Luckily the starter is fine! Thank you!
COLD START ISSUES-REPLACED ALL OF THE ABOVE-EITHER START- I D M PROBLEM-DID NOT NEED THE OTHER PARTS!! GREAT VIDEO-2 WEEKS OF NIGHT MARE-THANKS, BILL! 430,000 MILES! 1997 20 YEARS OLD!! 1!!
Man lm having the same problem, won't start ,only with starting fluid, change all sensor's,clean tank glow plugs, nothing tomorrow lm going t to change the idm ,good video bro!!!!!
I appreciate this. This is the first time I have heard of this as being a possible issue. I'm about to replace my glow plugs. I'm hoping thats it, but if not I will replace this.
Thanks so much! I am at that point of trying to figure out what is going on. Mine won't start at all right now. Your description of your issues sounds almost exactly like mine. I pulled my fuel tank and cleaned those screens and replace the fuel filter (it needed it) crank sensor, blah, blah, blah.... you know the routine and list of things to try.
Yes video definitely helps I know I’m late to the party but it’s still relevant I have a diesel truck that only starts with starting fluid will stay running at idle but sometimes shuts off on the freeway I let it cool down for a little bit and it will start again with starting fluid hopefully I change that part you’re talking about and get going because it seems like the injectors aren’t working correctly and they’ve been replaced
Btw, i just subscribed. Ive had mine since '04. Ive gone thru everything at least once. A crapload by myself and Im a stone mason. Def not a mechanic. I may be able to help u with a few things Ive seen/done. Skyjacker said my steering stabilizer was installed better than their instructions. Now for the body work. I put a 4" skyjacker full suspension. We restored frame back in '15. Needs a lil tlc again. I have some pretty good info tho, too. Good luck buddy.
mine 1995 F-350 7.3 power stroke. would not start for the longest time with out having plugged in the core heater . bought new injector module hooked it up myself and now my truck starts two turns of the glow plugs cranks right up even on cold days i am happy
I am doing the same thing..I have the 99 7.3 changed everything..just spent 400 on batteries and I still had the click.. but It's been hard cranking slow to crank.. and yes I have 350,000 on her..changed everything.. new AC completely, new IPR, ICP, fuel bowl heater, oil change, new glow plug solenoids, new vacuum lines, you name it.. it's new..hell the starters Only a year old...so I ordered a new one but think it's just the solenoid on the passenger side front fender well.. test that tomorrow before I remove the old starter and install the new one..on mine the computer under the console would fill up with water and short (a fail from the factory) that problem was resolved but I haven't replaced the unit you're referring to now..and I am going to..so thank you for the heads up.. I have owned my since it was new also and she's been damn good to me so I am trying desperately to keep her. And yes 21 years she's has more that served me well if I break down the cost if I had to pay payments..
I’ve had the same problem for a couple years to go to a shop they replaced number eight injector he replaced the valve cover gasket harness assembly $1200 didn’t fix the thing except I did get an oil leak after he replace the valve cover gaskets thanks for your help
i fought my 2001 power Stroke for 6 months...it was tired so i put it on c list...next day my neighbor put valve cover gaskets in it!! ALL the electronic glowplug connections and timing wires!!! 99 BUX plus 200 for him....i almost took it off c list!!! it ran like never before...IM AMAZED its not mentioned here
I'm here in Florida my F350 is doing the same thing I'm going to go order me one right now tired of dealing with it if it don't need it oh well it got it thanks for the video very helpful any other issues with that fine truck keep sending them out people need to know thanks
I have 2000 f250 same problem just about replaced everything, but truck so hard to start. but when she starts runs perfect. I'm going to get the Idm now.
I have an obs f250 7.3 and i had a shop (hack)try clear up a rough run and he threw my money at it and didn't fix it but after watching RU-vid a bunch it said check the FICM which is the early IDM and when i took it out it was 3/4 full of water. expensive part without some fool trying to sell you a set of injectors.
There are so many things on a diesel that need to work correctly in order to start. When you have a new truck, then it is likely to be caused by one item. The older the vehicle is, the more likely that there are many things, that contribute to a poor start. Example: Old PCM and ICM relays, low battery voltage, corroded battery terminals, poor starter solenoid, starter cable connector/terminal, starter condition/age, glow plugs/relay. Cold weather: air intake heater coil/relay, exhaust back pressure valve, fuel bowel heater, block heater(if equipped) Also, motor oil level, fuel, an original IPR or a bad CPS can cause a no start. You don’t need a functioning ICP sensor or a fuel pump (if primed) to start.
Brandon! I could kiss you,I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what’s going on with my truck 2003 F350 7.3 w/184k miles. My truck does the same thing and I changed out glow plugs the regulator. I’m buying a box right now. Thank You
Is there a way to test this to see if it's bad before just replacing it? Or is it an almost guarantee that it will need to be replaced on a 250k+ mile engine?
I have the exact same truck! A 2001 Crew Cab Super Duty 7.3L Diesel F-250. It has about 250K miles now. It has been getting more & more difficult to start over the past 2 years. I've actually been shopping for a new truck! I think you may just have saved me a lot of time, hassle and money! I'm going to give this a try and I'll let you know! BTW... I'm not too far north of you... I'm in Virginia. THANK YOU!!!!!
This is more than Likely what I'm about to replace. I have changed the IPR I have changed the ICP I have changed the CPS and both valve covers and harness's was going to rebuild injectors until I discovered someone else already did it in the past seals were still good. Throws no codes. I'm gonna do what he did and replace my IDM but if that doesn't fix it I think it'll be time to sell it. My only other suspect could be my HPOP but it seems to get good pressure according to the gauge I hooked up 3000-3500 and up.
