7.3 powerstroke no crank no start

@@AutomedicGarage So I jumped across the 2 posts. I get a loud click from the starter but it does not actually turn. I have tried to multiple times. It does the same when I turn the key in the ignition. I have tried with jumper cables to my other vehicle as well and it still will not turn the motor over. Can I assume the starter is dead? I tried hitting it a couple of times briefly. Should I pound on it some more? It started great when I parked it about a week ago

@@dominikcanova9299 it would be my assumption that the starter is bad. You can pound on it more, you have to replace it worse case scenario.

Hey man I have about the Same problem on my 2003 I’ve replace ignition switch neutral saftey switch starter Icp new ipr all the ignition wires re done do you have any clue what it could be?

@@byebye1848can check glow plug relay, swap out that big starter relay inside. I didn’t try, but my mechanic talked about some of the other relays under the hood that could be checked or swapped around. When you say ignition switch, you’re not talking about the lock cylinder right but the actual switch that actuates all the wires to connect? Yeah, I eventually did get mine fixed though, but it took someone to be up top while I ran a jumper down to the starter solenoid under the truck because I wasn’t good and good enough voltage.

But with everything I still love my 7.3

It was in park obviously. So…

Sounds like sway bar bushings and or ball joints. Don’t currently have a ball joint video but I do however have one on sway bar bushing replacement with prothane bushings. Work great and last a long time. Check it out. Thanks for commenting.

What if the fuse is good, and I got voltage at the fuse when cranking, but no voltage at the solenoid/relay? Bad wire?

02 is where they started having some gauge issues also. Everything runs through the gauges, doom light, radio, windows etc

I’d look at the starter then

@@lakesiderenovationsllc you have something wrong with the ignition switch, wiring or something is actually in a do not start state such as the neutral safety isn’t telling the truck it’s in park or thinks the truck is in gear

You have a starter relay under the dash in the fuse/relay panel, don’t remember the location number on the diagram but I believe it’s the far right on that’s by it self. See if it’s clicking, if not swap another that’s not essential to it. It also could be your neutral safety switch or you also have a clutch switch so that if the truck is in gear the clutch must be depressed. When in neutral do you feel or here the solenoid located on the stater itself clicking? If so it would be your starter. Let me know what you find.

@@AutomedicGarage Sir, I tried to listen for a click when turning the key to the start position. I think I can hear a click but it is very quiet. Also I don't know which relay is the starter but i felt them and they seemed slightly warm. Also I did the "unplug the wire" near the battery and jump a wire from the positive battery terminal with the ignition in the on position(truck in neutral) and it did nothing. My neighbor said maybe it is the solenoid. If it is the solenoid can they be replaced alone without buying a new starter? I barely have enough confidence to remove the starter myself even though I watched a video showing the type of ratched and size of sockets needed. I have replaced starters before though. 1968 F500 300 CID inline six cylinder for example and maybe a 1989 GMC Sierra 350 v8...

@@AutomedicGarage Sorry I don't know if i gave too little or too much information. Thanksgiving day the truck wouldn't start after driving the family to Thanksgiving dinner. But I waited a minute and said a prayer and then it started just fine. After that I cleaned the battery terminals and had the batteries and alternator tested at Autozone. The truck only started twice. Once at Autozone when I had to shut it off to test the charging circuit. And once after I stopped at the store and tried restarting it. I have been driving it and pushing or rolling down a hill it starts VERY easy. But nothing when turning the key.

Also a small shop near my house said $90 (for labor) to replace my starter. I didn't tell him it's a 2003 F250 Diesel. Maybe I did tell him. I was there for a nail in my tire. we just put the tire in my sister's van and took it over there.

@@dolinick if your hearing clicking but the starter isn’t responding it’s more than likely your starter. Get some one to start it while your hand is on the solenoid that is in the starter. If you feel it click but the starter does nothing it’s the starter. The starter is a easy removal. You can do it.

Did you try jumping the solenoid like I showed before you replaced it?

Arlington tn. Just brought one home and ran it after sitting for 7 years. Never seen one stuck unless it had internal issues. Do you know the starter is good?

Never had this issue with a IDI, go jump the solenoid and see what happens, least you’ll know the starting circuit is in order, see if you have 12v to the solenoid trip wire.

LONG STORY short.....the most powerful tool in mechanics shop is either soap/oil to lube a sticky part, or......VINEGAR!- i was at my wits end at night in the dark i figured id clean the battery connections one more time..especially after remembering a vid saying that 7.3s are quirky if they dont have perfect battery connections- showing all kinds of weird symptoms took all 4 cable clamps off 1 more time- brushed and cleaned...then i looked at a bunch of small thin wires coming off the side of the positive clamp on the "non-starter" battery (driver side) they were held in place with kind of a jack leg arrangement- so i went at it with a toothbrush and vinegar...and EUREKKA!!!! ALL THE LIGHTS AND CIRCUITS CAME ON....so i guess one of those little wires is a switch leg of some sort...powering up everything...wow...well at least i wont have to change anything for another 5 years- strter alternator ignition switch voltage regulator starter solenoid🤣🤣🤣 . Ive definitely gotta clean up/ rearrange those little connectors- after 35 years they are barely holding on...... .@@AutomedicGarage

How long did it sit? I’m assuming it’s got a good set of hot batteries on it.

It sat for 4 years. I didn't check oil level, I heard in deisel engine if it's too low on oil it won't turn over too

Both batteries are new but I think they may not be big enough cause after a few tries you can tell truck draining batteries so I put jumper cables on to help but my truck has a small battery itself. So I feel like it could be batteries, my brother n law sprayed a little starter fluid into it and he said it turned over and ran for about 10 seconds, but I don't want to try that cause it could mess up glow plugs .

Are you referring to the solenoid? No if it’s bad it just doesn’t send power to the starter.

Need some live data. What’s ipr and icp doing when cranking

Similar but the solenoid is on the starter not on the fender well

You either have a brake or short in your the key switch wire coming from ignition or a bad ignition switch from the sound of it.

If you jump the solenoid and nothing happens your starter ain’t workin

You have a problem somewhere between your ignition and the solenoid. The small wire that tells the solenoid to trip and send power to the starter may have a short or a break in it.

Since yours is 03 with no fender solenoid, you have a starter relay in your inside fuse box.

Wheres the plug connector? I have same problem.

There’s not a neutral safety in a standard but a clutch depress switch instead. Please make sure your truck is in neutral if you jump anything so you don’t get run over.

Yes the solenoid on the fender is clicking and sound like my starter clicking

@@richardrucker15 if your solenoid is making contact and you hear the starter click the solenoid is fine. Are you sure you have hot batteries?

@@richardrucker15 if solenoid clicks, you know you have hot batteries and you can hear the starter attempting to throw out then it’s either the starter or if all you hear is a hard thud from the starter you could have a flexplate/flywheel problem or hydrolock issue.

If you could jump the old solenoid and have it start then it was the solenoid. Something must not be hooked up correct with the new one. Also you don’t have to have anyone in the cab when you jump the solenoid, put the key in the run position and just jump it. If it’s a manual make sure it in neutral.

@@AutomedicGarage do you know the ordering of the wires? I am 99% sure I rehooked them exactly as they were. I even undid them thinking maybe that was it and still same issue. Just odd it’s having the exact same issue with the new solenoid and the old one worked fine until today. Also I cleaned battery posts and terminals and can start with the new solenoid by having it in the on position and touching the solenoid posts but no crank from the cab.

@@tr3nt08 in that case it sounds like you have an issue between your ignition and the solenoid so that your not sending power to the solenoid telling it to close.

@@tr3nt08 when you turn the key to the start position see if your getting 12 bolts from the ignition source

If your jumping the solenoid with the screw driver and hear a click at the starter but it doesn’t turn over then you either have low battery voltage or a bad starter.

@@AutomedicGarage wait, i think i might have messed up. When jumping the solenoid, i didn’t leave the truck in the on position 😂 but i got my batteries tested at Autozone, they’re good for rn

@@Realofficialdee it doesn’t matter wether the key is on or not, if you jump the solenoid it will power the starter up the truck just won’t start with the key off.

@@AutomedicGarage okay bet bet, it’s my starter then. Damn 🤦🏽‍♂️ i literally just posted a short of my 7.3 running last night lol. I did a oil change earlier & i started it up, it ran for about 2 mins and sputtered then shut off. I added more oil. Im using Mobil Delvac 10w40. I tried Turning it back on & nothing. Not even a crank. When i do your method, it was just that click. $250 for a starter, sheesh lol 🤦🏽‍♂️ but aye, this my baby man lol

That tells us your starter is working so now the obvious, gotta figure out why your power wire to the solenoid has not power. Did you make sure it wouldn’t start when out in neutral?

@@AutomedicGarage well looks like I found the problem. Moving the steering column up and down will make the truck start. So now got too see why is getting a short in the wiring.

If your referring to the screw driver not jumping the solenoid then you have a bad solenoid if it does nothing and won’t turn the motor over but only if you don’t hear it clicking and sending power to the starter, if it clicks but the starter doesn’t engage you have a starter issue.

@@AutomedicGarage yeah I replaced my solenoid and my truck wouldn’t start then I replaced my starter with a buddy ! Took forever because of one little wire what wouldn’t come off ! Plus a shitty bolt ! But yeah she starts up faster now and thank god I got that done ! It’s always something ……

You can’t put to much of anything in a IDI. I’d be looking elsewhere.

Are your rpms registering on the dash or a scan tool? If not it’s cps. Are you producing 500 icp? What’s your ipr % ? Is your oil level right on the stick? Do you have oil about 1” below the high pressure oil reservoir plug?

@@AutomedicGarage Sadly I dont have a scan tool, I cahnge out the ipr, cps , frame fuel pump, cleaned out the fuel filters, new batteries , I checked the icp by disconnecting and and no oil shot out so am not really sure what else it could be ?

@@nightmar4056 go get yourself a scan gauge. You can monitor a lot of stuff with them actually and the price isn’t to bad. Where are you located?

I assuming you talking about the hot wire coming from the ignition switch. It should be 12v. You may have a bad ignition switch.
