Just a note for Canadian veterans, with proof (CF1 card) you will save the passenger fee of $38 for yourself and up to three others each way. We were just in Newfoundland for three weeks early July, but not our first time. We have lived there and the grandkids are there as well.

Thats stupid. Anyone can get a CF1 card. You don't need to be a vet. They should only accept the NDI20 or retired I'd card. From a crusty army WO!
@chrisxxx8685
@chrisxxx8685 9 месяцев назад
The CF1 card has to have the "v" for veteran. Yes many working for DND agencies (as civilians) can get the CF1 card but it should not have the "V" in the lower right corner. For the ferry they check, and a few years ago I also had to provide my retired ID card. The airlines (at least in Ottawa) also caught on that CF1 did not automatically mean veteran and stopped the free bag if it did not have the "V". BTW my retired ID card really doesn't look like me anymore😁. From another crusty army WO!

SOLO 70 year old travel gal took the 7 hr. ferry trip to The Rock with a rental car, then drove the entire East side to L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS, the 1,000 year old Norse settlement at the Northern fingertip of Newfoundland. Driving onto the ferry was a breeze, found a cushy recliner (no reservations at the time) and tried to catch a few winks. Later caught another ferry to Labrador and was so fascinated by the very different terrain and geology. Lovely people everywhere. Was in all Canadian Maritime Provinces in one trip. Highly recommended!

Love the info , enthusiasm and charities of your channel. I am Canadian and in 2022 I, my wife and little Gidget (morkie) 2 yr old puppy did a cross Canada RV trip to Newfoundland and return from British Columbia in a Winnebago 29" Class C with a 4 down manual 2013 toyota matrix toad. Native of Nova Scotia, the only province or territory of Canada never visited was Newfoundland & Labrador. We chose to sail from North Sydney to Argentia with a cabin booked. The return passage was booked from Port aux Basque to North Sydney without a cabin. Met so many people that just wanted to sit and talk that day passages are a quick passage of time. This plan was to only have to drive the 1100 km Trans Canada hwy once across the province. We did not need/book a cabin on the return passage of 7 hours. We did book kennel for Gidget for the overnight passage to Argentia but at the last minute reading the fine print of the kennel arrangement we cancelled that booking. Gidget is very familiar with the RV and is also pad trained. Her pad is placed in the shower floor and she knows to do her business there. Unfortunately the passage extended to 22 hours due to a major gale preventing the docking at Argentia. My distraught wife concerned about Gidget convinced the Purser and Captain to allow her accompanied a visit to the lower deck to check on her dog. Gidget greeted the crew member at the driver side front window with such barking and aggression that all concluded that she was in great shape. The point of the feedback was that the $1,100 fare from North Sydney to Argentia is offset by the wear & tear, fuel, nightly accommodation cost and vacation time of having to do the Hwy 1 both ways. We did not find Hwy 1 an enjoyable ride for the most part because of the rough road conditions...at least for our rig.

I've not taken the ferry -- but I have visited NewfoundLAND (as it's pronounced according to my wife's cousin's -- on her Dad's side). My experience was GREAT. Of course, we were with family -- but, I feel like all visitors will feel the same. NewfoundLANDERS are just good people! And the scenery is spectacular! Our visit included a trip to St. Anthony -- waaaay up the western peninsula -- where our brother-in-law (married to my wife's sister) said (and he's quite poetic!) -- "I don't think this is the end of the world, but I believe I can see it from here." He's from Minnesota -- masters in the understatement -- so that speaks VOLUMES to usI I hope you guys got to see the Viking Settlement (it probably has a name -- but I sure don't remember it!) up near St. Anthony -- but whatever you DID see, I'm sure it was spectacular! My wife has cousins in St. Johns and Northern Arm (near Gander, where many planes were grounded during 9/11 and the passengers were housed by locals in the Gander area (that's just who NewfoundLANDers are!). Newfoundland is just one of those "special places" -- made special by the people!

I've done both ferries. Our first trip to Newfoundland we only did the west coast over two weeks; arriving and departing from Port Aux Basques. Our departure was in late evening with arrival early the next morning. No rented cabin; we just did like the Newfies and grabbed a spot to take a nap wherever! On our second trip we went to Argentia to visit the east coast of Newfoundland and central Newfoundland before leaving from Port Aux Basques. Again we had no cabin. If you're lucky and its daytime you might get to see the islands of St-Pierre and Miquelon. The daytime is also great for looking for porpoises as they like to play in the ferries bow wave.

So, so helpful to see the deal with the ferry. Thank you! We by-passed NL this time because of their lack of Tesla superchargers, but we'll get there on another trip. Meanwhile, we're in Quebec City enjoying the sites here. The three maritime provinces all had English and French and now it's just French. So, Google Translate helps out a lot!

Yes, I was on that ferry in the middle of winter. Got a stateroom below up forward. Was pleased because it was a 4 man stateroom but I had it all to myself. Quick shower and jumped into bed was asleep in seconds. Very comfortable. Then we left harbor and almost immediately started breaking ice. Holy shit the noise was deafening ! Back in 2011 we drove out to St John's Newfoundland and did the night crossing so we made progress during the night. We had to park almost all the way at the bottom level with our van and the top was full of trucks. On the way back it was almost empty for the night trip. Absolutely beautiful Province and we hope to travel back and explore more of the area.

There is a third option for a ferry that is from Labrador to the Northern Peninsula and only takes about two hours, we have been on all three on our motorcycle over the years. I find for day time crossing the reserved seating gives us enough of a home base to leave our belongings without the cabin option. Night time crossings we always take a cabin so we can have some quality sleep.

We have reserved a place on a 59 day Adventure Caravans tour of Gaspe and the Atlantic Provinces next summer. We’re taking the overnight ferry to Argentia going, and the shorter ferry to North Sydney returning. Adventure Caravans is reserving us a cabin that allows pets on the overnight crossing, so we’ll have our seven year old, 80 lbs. rescue dog, Ollie, with us. We’re really looking forward to this trip, especially because this summer we’re stuck in Florida because I had spine surgery in May.

Live in Washington State so used to ferries, but took 27' travel trailer to San Juan's and on the return we had to BACK onto the ferry to the end, around the divider and back down the other side because that ferry stops at multiple islands on the way back to Anacortes. Good thing my son in law was driving because he zipped right through the process. Would have taken me hours, which is why I now drive a motorhome :-) Sure enjoy your travels!!

When a friend of mine was on one of the ferry they used a laser to measure them. You are right they take the propane issue very seriously. They can check because there is no lock on the compartment the propane is in. Before you head south you should check out Roosevelt Campobello International Park. You can stay at Seaview Campground & Cottages. The most down East campground in the US.

Is that $1,000 American or Canadian. I remember hitchhiking from Kingston, Ontario to St John's with $13 in my pocket. I still had $8 left when I arrived in St John's. May, 1970. I think the passage was $5 and I slept in the chairs which were comfortable enough.

That's a lot more than I expected of a ferry. Also didn't realize the distance involved. Much nicer, safer & more comfortable that the only ferry I've ever been on. It crossed the Mississippi River somewhere north of Quincy, IL. It was a temporary thing because of a bridge repair. My 70' semi had to be loaded front left (bow port) corner to right rear (stern starboard) corner to fit. And it sat low in the water with my 77,000 lb rig on it! No racks, seating or restrooms.

That's funny. 12:25 on the video you are behind a trailer from British Columbia Canada, Arbutus RV which is on Vancouver Island, and Courtenay area, where I live. I did both ferries to Newfoundland last August.

That was sooo fun! I would love to travel to the East Coast and see all there is to see, but we live in California and my husband is still working. Plus, he feels it is too far to travel. 😢 Anyhow, thanks for the great video. I was so impressed with Phil’s driving skills getting on and off the ferry.

Thank you. It was a bit nerve wrecking, especially when they park so close.

We did a 17 day bus tour of NFLD in 2019. It was great. Food was great. If you like Halibut ( should be Cod) and anything you will have a great dining experience.

When I was in St Johns the waitress said the local dish was pan fried cod, so I ordered it, it was very good!

As a Cape Bretoner, I grew up on cod and many other types of fish and seafood. Cod, mackeral, etc is harder to find today than when I was a kid. I may do some mackeral jigging of my own this summer. Great on the barbecue!

Thank you so much, you explained the travel to and from my home province great and yes it isn't cheap but well worth it..:D if i do say so...Also for future reference or anyone reading who wants a little different adventure you may also drive up the Northern Peninsula and take a ferry across to Labrador which is a part of NL and drive across and down through Quebec FYI..hehe Personally I would take the argentia ferry if I were visiting just because of the back tracking of Highway and taking in the cost of fuel and time its not that much difference and could get you a few more days somewhere that you fall in love with. Thank you Phil and Stacy

That is cool to see the videos. One of the things that I didn't get to do when I was in the Navy was to be stationed on a ship. Being a new corpsman I was always at a hospital or clinic. Then when I went through 8404 school I was with the Marines still on land. I always love your videos

I watched one of your previous videos in which you had the power cable from your rv to the toad come off and get dragged and damaged. I meant to comment on that video but can’t find it now. Anyway, I was concerned that would happen to us, so I started zip tying the cord on each end. I put a zip tie around the cord and then another to the rv and toad and tied them together. Just a suggestion if you haven’t already thought of it. Totally enjoy your channel. We are several weeks behind you in our travels from Florida to Nova Scotia and PEI. Your videos have been greatly informative.

I grew up near the ferry terminal in North Sydney. I hope you were treated well. I spent a summer on the old American base in Stephenville ,NFLD, in 1978 . I was there earning my "wings" in the Canadian Air Cadets. I eventually got to spend a summer in Portugal on exchange with a group of cadets from most NATO in 1980, including a bunch of American cadets. Look to see how you enjoyed NFLD. Safe travels.

We live in Labrador. We've travelled on and off the Rock a few times over the years. Twice we've left Labrador through Québec and done the loop through N.B. & N.S., returning to Labrador via Newfoundland. Once through Argentia because we wanted to go explore St. John's and go see a Rising Tide Theatre performance in Trinity, the other through Port-aux Basques so we could take in a few performances at Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador in Cow Head on the Northern Peninsula.

The province of Newfoundland is pronounced like this : pronounce new as new, found as fin, and land as you would normally say land, not lind. The accent is on the first syllable.

If you travel to Washington state and use the ferry system be aware of the tides. Minimum of a 4 foot tide level to maximum of 8 feet. This is for our Motorhome rear bumper clearance.
