In this episode, Chelsea dissects Bridgerton, the Regency romance Netflix show that's been on all our minds. From knowing when to compromise to following the path you want (instead of the one you've been told you're supposed to want), these are the lessons any feminist can take from Bridgerton.

Anthony bringing Sienna flowers was very symbolic of his total misunderstanding of her and her needs. A countess or duchess (like Anthony’s sister and mother) would have a servant on hand to take the bouquet immediately, but Siena is a middle class woman who answers her own door and would have to awkwardly deal with flowers in the moment.

Also...why did you feel it necessary to mention that you didn't seek public assistance, to at least ensure that you would be able to eat? Was it because your earned income was sufficient for your needs at the time? Does needing public assistance strike you as something shameful, so you feel NOT getting it, even if you needed to, is somehow a point of pride? I really am asking to gain insight.

Thank you for articulating how I felt about Marina's storyline. Obviously tricking someone into marrying you is wrong but given the fact that she had no good options available I still felt a lot of sympathy for her. Penelope's holier than thou attitude towards it all bothered me since it reminded me of all the times someone more privileged than me judged me for certain decisions. I still fume over catching heat from my fellow students in college for not making a donation towards our class gift to the school, which was probably something insignificant like a bench or some other nonsense. As someone who frequently worked multiple jobs during college and didn't receive outside support from parents this really hit a nerve that I'm still reeling from.
@charlieparker5346
@charlieparker5346 3 года назад
The thing is for me, about Pen, is that she's likely thinking the same thing. Her problem isn't that she's tricking someone into marrying her. Pen is angry and devastated because it's specifically Colin, the boy she loves. And she probably thinks that may be her only real chance at happiness because frankly speaking, she's fat. Now IRL in this time period, that wouldn't be a problem. It was more about silohuette than size. But in the world of the show, it's very clear that Penelope is expected to face difficulties finding a husband as a big girl. (and though she does know it, because her dad is an ass) And again, she's in love with Colin. It's more about her being angry and hurt than her being self-righteous. She didn't give a fuck if Marina tricked someone else. Am I defending Penelope? I don't....think so? I basically just called her selfish. But I mean, they're both being incredibly selfish for ostensibly good reasons. I guess this is just to correct how Penelope is being selfish.

I am ecstatic that my finance sensei, Chelsea, also likes romance novels, but sadly I still see all around me even in this day and age many effects of situations that the show portrays, including the Featherington women completely ignoring their finances and how women have completely different responses to different decisions. I hope that this show, being so liked and seen, makes many women and men who sit and realize they too are recreating self-destructive actions to just SAY THANK U NEXT TO THE VISCOUNT AND STAN PRINCE FRIEDRICH!

@4Freedom4All It's a bit of a stretch to compare the paparazzi press coverage that the British royals have faced for the past few decades with the lifestyle of a German prince in the early 1800s. (Don't need to read up on Princess Diana, thanks; I'm in my 30s and have witnessed it.) I saw the show. I'm well aware that the whole point, this being a romance, was that Daphne and Simon were in love. That doesn't change the fact that the much more practical match would have been the prince. And at the time that the prince was courting Daphne, Simon was more or less blowing her off and the prince was being a generally stand-up guy. If she would have been willing to really consider options other than Simon, I see no reason why she couldn't have hit it off with the prince, who seemed to have much more in common with her as far as life goals went. In those days, that would have been an enormously serendipitous match that you would be a fool to pass up. And even now, I don't think it's a great idea to flirt with other guys just to get back the attention of a guy who is currently not willing to commit to you.

Part of what bothered me about Bridgerton was Penelope's character in respects to Lady Whistledown and gossip. In the books the Lady Whistledown papers were social commentary, not necessarily negative and never negative towards the Bridgertons. It was not malicious, scandal exposing gossip. It was gossip in the sense of fashion, and social tropes. Not exposing pregnancies and ruining people. And then there is the amount of time. In the books Penelope was a successful and anonymous writer for ten years. She did run her finances and saved her family's finances as well all without anyone knowing. For ten years. In other words the show's version is a poor imitation and tried too much to be like Gossip Girl than actually being Lady Whistledown. As Penelope was my favorite book character, It royally pisses me off and it has ruined the Lady Whistledown story line going forward. Because of course any female who gossips does so maliciously with no concern of consequences for others or herself. And that is what the show says. But not the books. Not Lady Whistledown.

But the girls‘ (esp. Daphne‘s) sexual awakening and discovery as they grow up is such a quintessential part of the storyline. And the fact that the female gaze is for once being centered in a mainstream production is, frankly, exhilarating. None of the sex scenes are gratuitous. I disagree that his reasoning was petty. He had strong negative emotions to bearing children because of the relationship with his father. I agree to all, expect the flowers 😅 I love them 😅🥰 Always, in any shape or form. Just stick them in a vase with water in the wrapping if you are headed out, and deal with them (cutting etc) once you get back 😄 I think in that scene with Anthony it wasn't the flowers fault 😅 It was him. His gesture was too late. And Sienna knew that he/they would be shunned by his social class. They were a fantasy that could never work. He could never make his peers accept her. And he would either leave her again, or they would both be outcast. No flowers can fix that. The only time I resented flowers from a boyfriend/husband were when they were offered as compensation for something else... When they could not make up for whatever they were supposed to make up for. When given in affection and love, they always bring me joy, and are the best gifts 🥰 And yes, the emotionally available, stable and kind hearthed man, prince or not is the best option 😊 Always. I was married to "a duke" during 14 miserable years. You cannot reform a man that doesnt wish it himself. We never got any children. Two years after the divorce I met my "prince" 🥰 Its such a world of difference. We have been together for six months now and I pray we will remain together... And children? I'd love to... A bit too early on in the relationship for it though... And also perhaps too late anyway. I'm 41 now. Just skip the regrets ladies and marry the prince 🥰

I 100% agree that the practical match would've been the Prince but Daphne really wanted to have a "love match" so unfortunately she fell in love with Simon when they were just pretending to be courting, so she couldn't help but still want Simon more, and like you pointed out she had the luxury/ privilege to choose a love match rather than one of socio-economic practicality. Also it's not like Simon was dishonest about his intentions-he mentioned he didn't want to get married or have a family so Daphne was the perfect shield from those pushy mamas- and he also did genuinely fall in love with her so it wasn't like a fuckboi leading her on, rather it was more of a lack of self control in the garden that forced them to consider actually being together. I also agree though his whole issue about not having kids just to spite his father should've been done in therapy and the whole narrative about the woman being the outlet for emotional burden is not healthy

I like the point about consequences not being the same for men and women. Men actually get a pay bump for having children because people perceive him as needing to feed mouths, versus women are questioned whether they can handle the work and therefore aren't promoted or given a raise. In grad school, profs will tell you its the best time to have a child but then if you do, will question your commitment to academia and research.

Not every woman can change a man nor does she have to. Emotional instability only looks attractive in reel life and in books. Daphne underwent so much of emotional turmoil and she was among the lucky few to have a happy ending. But this doesn’t happen to everyone.

The examples in No.5 strike me as problematic. As far as Marina goes, while not as rich as the Daphne, she is the daughter of a man who had enough money to loan Lord Featherington and she never expresses worry about money. When she thinks she isn't pregnant anymore, she rejects her dead lover's brother, and she doesn't seem to worry about what will happen to her, even though she is "ruined". It doesn't seem to me that poverty is the root of her despair, it's the prospect of being an unwed mother. As for Will, I find it rage-inducing that him committing a dishonest, possibly illegal, and dangerous act was presented as his only way of having some financial security for his family, when he has an extremely rich an influential friend who would most likely be very willing to help him set up a business or secure better-paid and more stable work. But asking Simon for help would be a hand out and so shameful and bad. Much better to go the gutsy illegal road.

On the subject of loneliness among young people, (I’m 65), do not under value the fulfillment that family ties can give us. If at all possible, nurture those relationships, though I realize for some, that’s near impossible, but for others, it is a wonderful addition to having friends or lack of. It rounds us out as human beings; as we are social/family centered creatures. Grandparents, parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, spouses, children, grandchildren...they all are a slice of our DNA and give us an identity we get from nowhere else.

Love Bridgerton as an escape. Such a cute show. That said, some of the regency practices they included in the show are insightful as to how blatantly women were seen and treated as chattel. To me, this perspective really hit by the fact that young unmarried women/childless married women needed a chaperone, but not for their own protections. Rather the practice was rooted in the property interest of future husbands who wanted to ensure heirs were their own. Just gross. In terms of personal agency, widowhood really seemed to be the best (but still not great) position a woman could find herself in, absent maybe the rare love marriage. Anyway, thanks for this video. Great discussion!

I haven't watched Bridgerton and don't really plan to, or don't mind spoilers. I usually agree with Qween Chelsea (in the best possible way), but I will say, that I'm not ready to give up the old fashioned flower-giving tradition until Men pick up slack in almost every other way in the household. At least if they are too much of a child to know how to cook anything other than pasta, won't even bring their dish to the sink after being waited on hand and foot, the least damn thing they can do is get me some pretty ass flowers. Like bare minimum. And while I agree that in order to reduce gendered norms in the house, we should proactively quiet gendered traditions like bringing flowers, I'm sick of having to be the gender that takes all the first steps. Like sheesh, now not only am I doing all the cooking and cleaning and saving money while the other is a kid with a credit card, and grocery shopping and meal planning . . . I now ALSO find myself taking out the trash and recycling and stopping at the hardware store and installing crap myself *in the name of trying to relieve gender norms*. F that noise, I'm done, bring me some god da*n flowers if you're gonna sit on your lazy butt all day. Oh wait - I pick up my own flowers when I go to the grocery store too. At least with the joint account, he can pay for half that shit. End of rant.
