I remember thinking: Why doesn't Carrie sell a few dozen of her expensive designer shoes to get the money for a rental downpayment?

Same! And she has all those clothes too. Some she doesn't wear anymore. Not just in the closet but in all her cupboards (and oven) in her kitchen... like that bird purse Big got her. While it was ugly it probably cost a fortune (since he doesn't do cheap)...

@@dessy0713 she could have moved in with one of her friends. Thats not really like living on the streets. Or she could have tried to find a smaller apartment. Also those shoes were like her friends and she had a emotional connection with them. And losing like 80% of a former investment is seriously stupid if you could still gain 120% when you wait a bit.

I HATED the storyline for Carrie trying to buy the apartment, her entitlement with Charlotte was SO gross! Then in the end, after Big already gives her all the money she needed for the purchase, Charlotte gives her her engagement ring from Trey, and that was supposed to be nice gesture……but like…Carrie already had the money from Big!!! Wtf???

Maybe you can do a video on Samantha and Miranda - the opposite of Carrie when it comes to finances. They are financially savvy, they buy their own apartments, have lifestyles they can actually afford and they actually showcase the obstacles of getting a mortgage by yourself/owning a house ( Samantha's meltdown when she can't simply call the landlord when something goes wrong). They have savings (which they offer Carrie for her downpayment), maturity and perspective, and most of all they work hard for all of it, despite encountering sexist prejudice within their respective workplaces.

The story line about Carrie, Charlotte and the ring has ALWAYS driven me nuts, especially because during this point in the story, Charlotte complains bitterly about not being able to get a job because she had "too much experience." What I wish had happened instead is that Charlotte sold the ring for the funds to start her own gallery and Carrie sold 50% of her insane wardrobe on the newly exploding Ebay to come up with the down payment for her apartment. Resulting in each woman having walked away from the experience using the resources they have to solve their problems. It would have been so much more empowering and satisfying. Carrie could have reflected on Aiden's point that she didn't wear a lot of her clothes, maybe done a fun in-apartment fashion show with her friends and they all end screaming when a dress that wasn't right for her sold for a freakishly high bid on ebay. It would have been super cute.
@juliagrowsinportland
@juliagrowsinportland 2 года назад
@@genxx2724 ebay was founded in 1995. Granted, it definitely saw it’s rise on the backs of beanie babies (if I recall correctly, about 10% of it’s initial listing volume). In 2002, when carrie was buying her apartment, ebay was a publicly traded company worth 21 billion dollars. If I recall correctly, Carrie uses internet to email Aiden at one point around this time in the series so she is aware of its existence. Also, if I my memory serves me, Miranda tells carrie that she can shop online, to which Carrie responds “oh no, shopping is my cardio.” At this point, I think the writers could have had the storyline diverge into Carrie rethinking her relationship with the internet and it would have been plausible. But perhaps you’re right and only “freaks” were using it. 🤷‍♀️ good thing carrie had Big’s and Tray’s money to fall back on or she would have been in a pickle.

I so loved Sex and the City, but I knew I couldn't ever afford most of the stuff that was noted. But in my own way I did, I went to NYC with my cousin and got my Mahlonos at MB out let for 1/4 of the price and when I saw other things I went to outlets to get the things I wanted that I could get in my budget. In the instance of dating a lot should have been viewed in the shoes of Kim Catrells character, when dating Smith Jared, he loved Samantha's character what should have been noted when she got injured, she finally allow Jared to help her..... that being an instance of thinking about common sense and humbling herself, that I say was a good thing to learn.

But I gave the money with the full expectation that they never would, even though they are good friends and insisted they would repay it. They never did pay me back, but because I framed it in my mind as a gift, not loan, I never remind them and just view the money as gone for good so I'm fine with it. That being said, there was one occasion where a friend DID pay me back and I was pleasantly surprised. But yeah, never give friends or family money with the expectation you will get it back

Where I'm from, you're expected to share your money with each other with ur fam members. That's just how it is here. And in all honesty, it has worked pretty well for my fam members. Just lately they all spent money together to buy my grandparents the needed med equipment for covid-19 since they caught it. It really does depend. I personally don't like it since I want independence, unlike this whole "let's share everything together" lifestyle, but at the very same time, I know some people would just prefer that helping hand whenever they needed it. And here ur never expected to pay ur siblings back for the money unless it's a really big amount and u can repay it. But on some occasions my grandpa has payed his sister-in-laws electricity bill which came up to 100€ (its expensive here if it's THAT much, since I'm aware in some other parts it's not a big deal) and he didn't expect anything in return. So yeah, just do whatever u prefer. Ofc not everyone is privileged enough to have fam members who'll do that for u without taking advantage of u, but if u can and that's what u want, go ahead

The worst aspect of this is that the irresponsible behaviour never has any consequences. It teaches people that even if they’re in financial trouble you have nothing to fear because someone else will save you. Seeing this lack of consequences makes people take these issues way less serious.

How was Aiden "kind of pathetic"? Aiden was the one who liked and loved Carrie from the start of their relationship - unlike Big who treated Carrie like a f- buddy while they were "dating"; and a side piece while HE was married! Also, I hated that Aiden was treated as unreasonable for not being able to forgive Carrie for her affair with Big -- no, Carrie, he does NOT have to forgive you! And when Aiden asks for the money HE PAID for the apartment (remember that arc where she was going to be on the street because the building went condo/co-op -- It's been awhile -- and Aiden paid for it?), he gets written like some kind of bad guy because he's not going to give her the place for free? Really? He's just supposed to give the woman who cheated on him a condo/co-op worth thousands of dollars who isn't even his wife? REALLY? Because if Carrie had been the one to purchase the apartment for Aiden, then everyone would have been screaming, "Get your money back, Carrie!" Aiden was the opposite of pathetic! And I stopped watching the show once Carrie went back to Big, because DAMN, crawling back to a dude who can't commit to you, and has to be dragged kicking and screaming to say, "I love you" is what's really pathetic.

There were a few points that were overblown and not really applicable to the time the show was made but I feel like they were still mostly valid. The delivery thing was pretty unfair though. Delivered by bicycle messenger, lunch deal was $8, portions were pretty generous, and they were FAST. I don't think I could make a plate of broccoli beef in 16 minutes if my life depended on it, so it wasn't something I could easily replace by cooking- and I can cook! 4 years later, it's more than doubled in price, the quality suffered, there's a bunch of fees, and they're using Doordash instead of employing their own delivery person so it's really slow. I didn’t see Friends as a problem in portraying finances. Ross, a postgraduate professor, Chandler a (what we’d call today) a data analyst and Monic a as a head chef in a top restaurant would all have been earning well, yet staying in rent controlled apartments, walking everywhere and over-staying in the coffeeshop after a likely $1 coffee. Rachel leeched off Monica before she made it, and Joey on Chandler. My problem with Friends was the double standards in relationships and friendships. Ie, on Ross’s first date with Rachel he slept with her on the museum because of work, but Ross made a big deal of Rachel’s work demands when she got her big role and dumped her for it etc.

She would get out on the street in her car and she would get really upset that everyone has someplace to be. Ma’am they’re trying to get to work, or they might have a court date that is important, or a doctors appointment they’ve waited for for four months. The worst way SATC affected me was making me value superfluous items that are fashionable more then essencial items. I stayed years without updating my reading glasses, because it was “too expensive”, and literally not seeing well, while spending hundreds on clothes, shoes, jewelry, cocktails… Not doing this anymore, it’s my well-being first now. Thanks for the video!
@lemsip207
@lemsip207 2 года назад
I noticed how it had affected women around me at the time as they spent as much time as possible doing the clothes shops. During their lunch hour and after work as well as every Saturday. I remember doing a one day computer course and a bunch of women who worked together were glad we finished early so they could all go clothes shopping together. I remember thinking that there were better ways to bond such as going for coffee together or going bowling. So it didn't affect people individually but collectively apart from a small minority who had the money and struck out on their own buying the same labels, dress styles, shoes or handbags or more likely knock off copies. It starts with just one person in the friend group or at work buying a fancy handbag and then everyone else in the group competes. I wouldn't want the dresses either as they looked uncomfortable to wear and I wouldn't want one at those prices just to wear once or twice as they went out of fashion very quickly.

She went shopping then becomes bored and annoyed until she discovers she has fans - who she ditched. For a city she dreamed of, she didn't even go to the Louvre, or go sight seeing or anything. The fan-party she was invited to was stupid, the writers just wanted pointless drama. IRL she should have just said she was busy that night and would have to do it another night. ... or she could also have called the restaurant and left a message (using her french language book) saying she would be late... Lots of things she does makes no sense.

As unrealistic as Carries lifestyle was in relation to her finances, I will say that there are definitely some women and men out there who do live this way, constantly in a state of financial precariousness. There’s a lot written about how romantic relationships portrayed in fiction and media has affected our real life understanding of love and marriage. Personally I’ve had to admit to myself how much some concepts that turned out to be toxic affected my earliest expectations and behavior. But this is the first piece I’ve ever come across to examine the effect of media on our thoughts and behavior about money. Sad but true about how we get our ideas from media. And in a way: relationships are entwined with finances, and that's not a new thing. A couple of centuries ago it was "what sort of starting capital does _she_ bring to the marriage, and what sort of money is _he_ earning to support a growing family". We are always taught to consider that terribly cold-hearted and unromantic and barbaric ... while inhaling the idea that blowing a couple of ten thousand on a wedding is super romantic. I have always remembered Miranda and Charlotte arguing about Charlotte quitting her job. And Charlotte yelling after Miranda, "I choose my choice!" It was powerful to me because it was about being confident in your decisions and not being insecure.
@chanoy._v8758
@chanoy._v8758 2 года назад
I didn’t think I’d type so much but still, 😸 I hear you, Although, …..Charlotte didn’t seem confident in her choice to me. Just before she started yelling at Miranda, she said “I’ve made my choice and I really need YOU(Miranda) to get behind it”. Miranda was the modern womans woman’s feminist of the show while Charlotte was the ultra feminine feminist, this plot perfectly juxtaposed them. While friends can influence decisions and we care what others think especially when we love them, it’s ultimately what YOU can live with. These women had some serious co-dependency issues especially Charlotte and Carrie. I think Charlotte really got caught up with everything looking perfect, she didn’t realize that there wasn’t a foundation in her mirage. She didn’t even know that her husband didn’t want kids and neither did he evidently. So she went into planning THEIR lives out, involving children, quitting her job only to get divorced because of children they don’t have/want. Till death do we part, means nothing. So it’s the full family or none at all for Charlotte which is fair but they didn’t figure all that out before. Maybe I’m not remembering but they should’ve had one convo or so about what they wanted rather than “damn we look good together”. Trey put up a prenup before mirage and that was the only time they mentioned kids and it wasn’t a convo between the couple it was the girlfriends. Even then the “kids”, was more about their worth. The boy being worth more than the girl. In hindsight and a more realistic show (which is no fun), say she’d have gotten pregnant, looked for a replacement at work and go glaze those bowls. She was secure in mirage and life but never quit on stable situation before going on another path unless you absolutely need to. If she knew her friends like viewers interpret them, she’d know they’d come around and support her. Although I think their initial reaction was ridiculous since this lifestyle choice was right up Charlottes ally. It would’ve been more odd if she’d said she didn’t want to have kids or sent them abroad for boarding school and not raise them personally. I like her choice, I’d have done it if I were her. Miranda was always the super feminist so I think it was her reaction that got to Charlotte even more. The fact that Trey suggested it. Miranda’s choices when she got pregnant was right up her ally and Charlotte disagreed with pretty much all of them besides her decision to keep the baby. Namely, Miranda worked throughout her terms and didn’t accept Steve’s proposal early in her pregnancy after he proposed just after she told him.
@DivaViews
@DivaViews 2 года назад
@@chanoy._v8758 you know, you're right. I personally interpreted choosing your choice as being the cry of a confident woman, but that's more about how I took it, not Charlotte. I should have worded it differently. Charlotte was definitely being plaintive when she was saying it to Miranda, like she was trying to convince Miranda AND herself that she was secure in her choice. Charlotte thought she'd accomplish her goals and that would make her feel confident and at peace, instead of being confident and then finding peace.

Charlotte was insecure, that was the whole point, and she put on so much pressure on the picture perfect family that she never noticed her husband and how the relationship really was. Maybe if she had gotten pregnant straight away the divorce would have happened after the baby was born (once all her time was taken by the newborn and her mummy's boy of a husband felt "abandoned"), but in all, it was a big mistake to put so much pressure on oneself to "accomplish" something that is not entirely up to you, like getting pregnant was. I think the whole story with Charlotte was very accurate, as I know several women like that, whose marriages broke down because they married to accomplish an ideal, not because of the actual relationship.

Also (and I feel like this is something no one seems to notice, especially when they're trying to make a point about how impossible Carrie's lifestyle is) Carrie Bradshaw lived in a studio apartment, NOT a one-bedroom. When the girls come over, they're siting in chairs (no sofa) that are at the foot of Carrie's bed. Samantha's apartment in the meatpacking district that she was so proud of was ALSO a studio apartment. One thing I always realize people forgetting about SATC is that Samantha was a PR honcho. Like…. She was the one taking them on guest lists to a lot of these dinners and clubs and events. As someone who was born and raised in NUC and always referred to myself as a “broke socialite,” I have always been more able to afford to go clubbing or to promoted events where I’m on a list than to even buy groceries. There have been many times in my life where I may not have had enough money to refill a metro-card or a tank of gas, but was invited to have my own table somewhere that finance bros next to me are paying 5000$ for. So Id just ask a friend to come with me and they’d be my transportation. When they’re at their little coffee shop, that’s them paying. When they’re on dates, the men are generally paying. Even Steve insists on lying for Miranda which is why they have so much pizza and noodles. I thought it was understood that in a lot of the other events, they were all on Sam’s lists. I think sometimes people forget how NYC works. I have NEVER understood how people around me can blow 100 dollar a night at some gross dive bar, but then not realize that some of us can’t afford that. We have to be invited places by the owners, promoters, etc etc. That’s how it works. A lot of events you see them attend on the show are also Charlotte’s art world events and EVEN CARRIE gets into places for free with a press pass! Just because we see it outright stated only a few times doesn’t mean we can’t conclude it’s happening all the time. These broads aren’t PAYING every time they go out. I used to go out 5 times a week, because it was all I could afford to do! LMFAO. I did my own hair, my own nails, I had to cook all my meals except the openings of restaurants I was invited to. So they’re spending way less on their nights out than someone in Cleveland is spending to take their family of four out to Applebee’s.

She was born in a regular family, just like my dad (duh), but she somehow delulu-d herself into thinking that she could lead this glamorous lifestyle. Every choice in her life was made towards that goal, she even won the lottery once and plowed through the winnings in record time. I had friends who lived in NYC in the 90s. One was in a converted motel, so a studio of about 150 sq ft, in Greenwich. It was a dump and cost over $1000. Everyone else in nicer apts all had to have at least one roommate to afford it. They all mocked shows like Friends and SATC for the unrealistic portrayal of life for average people. I feel like there is this perception that SATC was universally loved in the 90s and seen as very progressive. A lot of women at the time also noted the screwed up way they approached relationships and money. We saw that the underlying messages were actually very disempowering of women since they were a throwback to 50s style messaging of relying on a man to fix your problems and tuned out for that reason. There was also awareness that their approach to LGBT persons was cringey at best, damaging at worst. The people that bought into the show and its messaging at the time are similar to people who blindly follow influencers now. It is so important that people develop a critical eye when consuming media. It is a necessary life skill.
