This is literally the best presentation advice ever. And I mean it. Whenever I ask people for help on how to form hand gestures, they say it just comes naturally but it for me it doesn't. I have to actually plan my hand motions and this is exactly what I needed. Ily so much Vanessa.

It’s not developed naturally. Those people just unknowningly are around people who use hand gestures and so it’s adopted. I learned my hand gestures and confidence and they go hand in hand. It’s hard to learn especially in uncomfortable situations but honestly. Best way I found was just to fake it until I made it.it’s hard to have a convo and not use my hands lol.

This is so true. When my students were doing their oral French exam, I would first ask the question without using much emotion or hand gesture and most students didn't understand except for the top ones. However, when I used emotion and hand gestures and asked the very same questions almost every student could understand what I was saying. I could see the invisible lightbulb go off in their head. All teachers should know the value of this.

She's giving examples when she quoted and also using her hands in every word she personally said. No pause at all! With that speaking pace! Every public speaker would agree that "pause" is important. I think this should be applied in hand gestures as well. I hardly can finish the 1st minute of the video without feeling (visually) over stimulated. On the other hand, I agree this is full of great information we need to know. Also to learn not using it too much, haha!

I agree that hand gestures can add a tremendous amount to a persons message by supporting and enforcing key parts you want the other person or audience to focus in on. But constant use of hands, like Vanessa demonstrates in this video, quickly becomes annoying and interrupting to the message you are trying to convey. You don't want the person/audience to become distracted by flailing hands or constantly moving hands and you don't want to lose the emphasis you can create, by diluting the emphasis or focus as people start to "tune out" your constant hand movement.
@teeteesmiles2478
@teeteesmiles2478 8 лет назад
Obviously there was too much gesturing in this video because she was giving all the examples. She was also being very grandiose about it and overemphasizing for the sake of time. It was still good info.
@mauia88
@mauia88 4 года назад
Unless you're waving your hands about or as Vanessa clearly points "doing jazz hands," no one is going to get distracted. Hand gestures are supposed to compliment what you're saying, benefitting overall communication. You sound like someone who doesn't naturally use hand gestures. Try it out before judging. Mexicans and Italians use a lot of hand gestures and it's fine.

I'll start by saying, this chick is really good at what she does. BUT, having watch about 15-20 of her segments, I've noticed a couple things: 1) She's on "AM Northwest" a lot...hahahaha....AM Northwest, and 2) The lady (and the funny guy) that 'interviews' her are the real money here! ...surprise...stooging.....bewilderment, and excitement.,..the older lady is like her Ed McMahon to Johnny Carson; acts 'in on it" perfectly. Nice work! Thanks again!
