7 Reasons Why I Quit Intermittent Fasting

If you want to know more about me, go here: arie.ck.page/3b41df23c1
I did intermittent fasting for 7 years. I did it because I thought it was an easy way to get (and stay) lean.
What I didn't know was that I was hurting my body a lot.
I did not pay attention to all the warning signs my body was giving me that I should start eating breakfast (and more calories in general).
If you're currently doing intermittent fasting, check if you have any of the 7 warning signs. If you do, then maybe it's better to stop it.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. I'm just sharing what I'm eating and what works for me. I'm still figuring things out, so don't blindly follow my advice. If you want to implement something I'm doing, I recommend you try it out for around 7 days and see if you feel better or worse.

IF is a good thing to practice when you are older and your metabolism slows down (and probably a little overweight). When you are younger there is no benefit on skipping breakfast. I learnt it the hard way.

My body was pretty much perfect until I was into my 50's when weight started creeping. The weight battle went back and forth for years. In my late 70's I began keto and fasting, got control of weight and improved health. Now I'm in my eighties and credit reasonable keto and occasional prolonged fasting with good health.

Thank you so very much for this podcast, which I really needed to hear!! I have been doing IF for more than 10 months. I have recently realized that I just haven't been getting enough protein or calories. Have lost weight and really need to gain at least 10 pounds. Have been feeling lots of stress and thought it was because of my 2 Narcissist roommates. (Moving very soon!). They are away now on a long Christmas holiday and I feel even more stress. Feel so weak so often and sometimes legs are so weak that I feel as if I will fall if I take a nice walk. I will go back to regular eating right away. This IF is not worth it for me. Thanks again. This video was extremely helpful. I have been IF for a while now. Everyone is saying you have to eat whole foods, but what if you don't have an appetite. I no longer have an appetite for food, causing my immune system to plummet. IF is good for the short term. I now have to force myself to eat breakfast because, as a female, not eating a hearty breakfast n skipping meals causes hormonal imbalance. If you need to shed some pounds, do it, but don't make it long-term. The stress you're talking about I've experienced as well, and that also doesn't give you an appetite leaving you bloated from your last meal. Also, difficulty sleeping.

It completely ruined my face, and my eyesight eventually. My hormones went crazy and I suffered from a face completely covered in huge cystic acne that I needed accutane to combat. The cysts left huge pitted scars and accutane gave me a ton of permanent eye floaters. I was 37 so accutane for someone my age was dangerous. People just need to eat well, exercise, and be patient with weight loss.

Compliments to you for trying different things and for remaining critical and not dogmatic. If I may give some advice, whatever your age and preferences the best is to eat whole foods, unprocessed. And for someone over 40, IF was good way to get rid of some weight and insuline resistance. Im sure I didn't need it at 19. I am now back to whole, organic foods and trying not to worry about food too much.

Thank you for sharing your story I had the same problems as you (and I'm also Dutch :p). My body was already easily stressed because of subclinical hypothyroidism, but luckily I found Ray Peat’s work. I started and tried fasting at 25, but it always felt bad (I tried to get rid of brain fog and it worked, but because of stress hormones). As my last resort, I tried low-carb to fix my health issues and it was absolutely horrible. I will never forget the extreme stress (I only did it for 5 months). Then I found Ray Peat on Twitter from ex keto/carnivore/low carbers talking about how Ray’s work saved them and I tried it and finally started slowly healing from the age of 27 (I'm now 29).
@jordanpostle8641
@jordanpostle8641 Год назад
So the problem wasn't intermittent fasting but the quality and quantity of food you were or weren't eating.
@foodlogged8632
@foodlogged8632 Год назад
My quality was good. But it was mainly the quantity. But even after I upped the quantity I still couldn't fix my issues without stopping intermittent fasting. So yes, intermittent fasting does not have to be an issue for everyone. But I think it can be problematical for a specific subset of people. That's why I made the video. To have people take a critical look at whether intermittent fasting is actually helping or hindering them.

Intermitting fasting is not for everyone in the first place. Secondly you need nutritious foods filled with all macro nutrients and fiber rich foods within your eating window, failing to do these will be problematic. Also consult a professional to guide you on the do’s and don’ts before going on this journey. Intermitting fasting and fasting in general has helped me in so many ways, in fact I feel very productive and energetic and clear mind with less hunger during fasting periods. Fasting is one of many tools of healthy living.

You seem to have confused Intermitten Fasting (IF) with Caloric Reduction. The beauty of IF is the YOU taylor your hours of Fasting with your hours of Feasting. Preferably Feasting time under 12 hours. Your Cold Hands and Cortisol maybe Insulin Resistance issues. Have you had IR checked out? Your Bloating and Tiredness could be Lectin Issues (see Dr Gundy’s videos).

I’ve been intermittent fasting for eight years and haven’t had any of his problems. Sounds like he eats the wrong food and not enough calories….his energy became low because his body never became fat adapted. His bloating is also a result of the wrong food , fasting allows the body to process previous food and toxins completely.

I also developed acid reflux and still experiencing the symptoms. Felt tired and im an athlete who trains 4 days at the gym and 5 days on the track so i need around 3k calories daily, so i would try to smash 1k calories into each meal 3 times a day. Thanks for sharing you experience. You're lucky that you're starting to doubt IF after just 2 months. It took me 7 years before I started doubting. Now you're in a bit of an annoying situation that you're bloated, but need to eat more calories. I would check your diet and see which calorie-rich foods still digest well for you. And then eat them more. What worked for me was to add a lot of full-fat dairy, and fruits to my diet to increase calories. And I also took some sodium acetate with meals to improve digestion. (You can make this by mixing baking soda with vinegar).

Intermittent fasting is just a way of eating, so it's not an eating disorder per se. It's also not always about caloric restriction, though it makes it very easy to undereat. When I was doing intermittent fasting I had a mild case of orthorexia. Hope that makes it clearer for you.

@@foodlogged8632 I tried IF and experience everything that you did - all 7 things!!! AND - I am a 53 year old post - menopausal woman, so its not just something that isn't right for "young" people. What I found is that I can only eat so much in one sitting... regardless if I skipped breakfast or not. I would get very hungry for lunch then could only eat so much until I felt stuffed and overly full, and had to spend a few hours in the afternoon feeling sick and uncomfortable because I ate too much. I do much better eating a good breakfast in the morning and then I find I'm not fixating on food for the rest of the day and eat just enough the rest of the day to satiate me and feel satisfied but not overly full. I agree about the orthorexia thing. I NEVER had any sign of that UNTIL I did IF where I didn't eat until noon. ALSO .... I was eating my second meal very late in the day - like 7:30, which messed with my sleep. I had terrible insomnia which I've never had before IF.

Because you didn’t eat whole food, I think in a very younger age it’s not a good idea to do intermittent fasting just because you need enough nutrition to grew up. By the way intermittent fasting is not starve your self, you just can eat as much as you can but certain of period. It’s not just you have to punish your body and starve yourself. You have to eat whole food with full of protein which provide you energy❤

After around 4 years of IF I had issues with to much stomach acid resulting in unpleasent stomach pain during night and morning. I guess it was mostly because I ate meat and vegetables at around 6-7 pm and my body coudlnt digest it to well when I slept. I also felt at night like drying out: my skin was dry, my eyes were dry and I needed to wake up at night at least 4 times to drink water which led to bad sleep again because I needed to wake up and go to the toilet. Nights were a mess for me. I stopped with IF and started to eat trough the day again and shortly after these issues were gone. I now eat my main meal with meat at vegetables at around 12am at work, also have breakfast and in the evening before sleep only a Skyr yogurt with probiotics. My stomach issues are completely gone and my sleep has improved a LOT, I now can sleep for more than 4 hours without waking because of dry eyes, thirst or the urge to go to the bathroom. IF isnt bad but also not for everyone

Most of your symptoms sound like you just didn't eat enough. And you fixed it by eating more. As you said. I have always hated to eat breakfast, so I have been naturally doing IF for +30 years, and havent had those issues. But eating way too little all year around can indeed cause that, but then you should not blame IF, you should blame low calorie diet. "I stopped eating too little, and it improved my life" would be more correct title in my opinion. IF were maybe the reason why you didn't eat enough, but reason you felt bad were that you didn't eat enough, not IF by itself.

What this guy is experiencing is not a problem with I.F. per se, but the pretty obvious fact that he didn't/doesn't eat a healthy diet. Eat the equivalent of an enormous salad daily full of leafy greens, cruciferous veggies such as brocolli, tomatoes, carrot slivers, avocado, cucumber, nuts, cheese, hard boiled eggs, etc (experiment). Make a healthy salad dressing by whisking together a quarter cup of heavy cream with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, then add some avocado or olive oil (whisk again), plus whatever extra ingredients you prefer to make the dressing of your choice. Limit pasta, rice, and potatoes for the most part (don't go crazy). Avoid most bread products (you know what I'm saying). Have a healthy protein shake (e.g. BioTrust) daily. Optional, but recommended, four to eight ounces of quality meat/chicken/fish; plus a piece of the best new york style cheese cake you can find (we all need a daily reward). Replace your creamer with a half tablespoon of good quality butter in your hot coffee or tea. Do a cheat day once a week. You will be good to go.

Seems like this gentleman ignored other key components of the protocol and as a result had bad results and is now blaming not eating...believing that eating more will increase core body temp tells me all I need to know....food addiction is real and like any other addiction its a reaction to something else going off the rails...Imagine an alcoholic trying to justify why he absolutely has to start drinking again...

Let me tell you, you who are addicted to overeating: In Africa, there are people who go 3 or more days without eating, because they don't have much to eat. They live, and I remember for 17 years of my age me and other people being trained in dry fasting and prayer by my father who was a reverend in the church, it could be three days or 7 days, it helped us more, too bad we continue to do so. We are here. On the one hand you have to put your stomach at rest, have you calculated how many times have you eaten since the day you were born? your stomach is always at work morning and evening. It is necessary to renew the energy, by fasting. purify the body. Be at rest and that should help.
