Which is better? That AUG or the AR-15? Let's hear your opinion with this poll before James gets started: forms.gle/xei8FeLqgRo7f3rMA
In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves goes over seven reasons that the AR-15/M-16/M4 carbine is better than the Steyr AUG bullpup. Based on James' personal experience owning both guns in addition to a 2018 weapons trial report by the New Zealand Ministry of Defense, James tells you how the M4 is better than the AUG.
James has compiled the sources he consulted on the Firearm Blog. Click here for the complete reports: www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2...

Barrel length means jack if you have good ammo. I'd take a Mk18 10 inch barrel with 77 Grain over any bullpup with a 16 inch barrel.

@@MrBsct 77 grain performs better from a 16" barrel at longer distance just like everything else.
@robertwilson8184
@robertwilson8184 3 года назад
@@MrBsct That's not really how terminal ballistics works. Pretty much any round, when used with the appropriate twist rate, will benefit from a longer barrel. Some more than others, sure, and depending on application mobility/maneuverability might be more important than ballistic performance. But this doesn't negate the science in itself. It just means you have a "good enough" point with respect to terminal ballistics.

The trigger on an AUG (Or at least the one I have shot..) feels like i'm shooting a plastic super soaker compared to most AR triggers. However, I've also shot an AUG with a trigger upgrade and the difference is night and day.
@darkhowling6425
@darkhowling6425 4 года назад
The trigger thing has come up a lot but that because its a progressive trigger on the AUG. There was no external fire selector, single shot/auto fire selection was based on how deep you pull the trigger. Trigger loses some function when going to civilian mode but doesn't lose travel.
@KyleSmith-bp2fe
@KyleSmith-bp2fe 4 года назад
What upgraded trigger was it?
@liamhill6653
@liamhill6653 4 года назад
I somewhat recall watching the Forgotten Weapons video on the AUG, and I think it had to do with using a different kind of plastic on the inside of the gun in the trigger group to make the trigger less squishy? He had 2 trigger groups and one was an old greenish plastic and the other one was a better black plastic.
@darkhowling6425
@darkhowling6425 4 года назад
@@liamhill6653 Pretty sure there is a metal parts trigger as well... Point being, the trigger group will always feel different from an AR because it has a VERY different philosophy governing its workings, the lack of selector adds complexity that AR trigger can do without add onto that the LENGTH of parts required to actually set-off the firing pin as they are quite far apart in bullpup config it will always be a less crisp trigger. UNTIL electronic firing becomes more accepted, already a thing in blackpowder rifles, i am waiting for a proper gun to do it.

Just to throw in my two bobs worth: It is very easy to leopard crawl with the muzzle facing downrange w/an F88 based on where the cog is. And I spent a lot of time doing that! Off-hand shooting w/an F88 isn’t fun but you get over copping brass in the face. It’s less of an issue than people make out in my opinion. As a lefty i used to reach under and cock the bolt, not bad but not ideal. Im no expert but I think its a perfectly good service rifle. I think it may have been adopted due to our experience of the SLR being “too long” for the jungle, and now we base rifles on how they perform in the urban environment - I suppose we always prepare for the last conflict we were involved in. The trigger is ratchet by the way. No excuses for that. I have no opinion as to which one is better but that is just my observations based on my limited experience so take it for what it is. Thanks blokes.

I think you are perfectly right . I used both rifles and i have to go with the australian report as well. But the real selling points for an M4 over an Stg77 are weight,modularity and price if i would boil it down to . The after market for the AUG is crap, almost non existent . I never had an issue shooting it from the left side , its not exactely like the brass will brake your jaw -one could barely feel it . Another aspect id like to point out is training. The AUG requires its own training to really get all out of it . I havent seen a single video on youtube yet with the recomanded procedures for a mag change. Dont even try to shoot the AUG like an AR it doesnt work. The AUG is also a lot more stable in full auto in my opinion . Yes the trigger isnst great but neither i was very impressed with the m4 trigger . Gota love the AK trigger 😉 . I love the weight of the m4 , it weighs nothing . In terms of accuracy i also go with the stg . But we are comoaring the m4 wich had been refined since decades with an A1 from 1977 i think in any case it puts up a good fight . The F90 athrax is exactely how the stg should be. Nice job auzzies ...

For the NZ Army marksman tests they went from the original 1.5x 'donut' sight to an ACOG. The Australian Army has an upgraded Steyr AUG with a 1x to 4x optic and has seen similar increases in accuracy just from the better optic. My opinion is the M4 is better due to quicker mag changes / stoppage drill, change mags while keeping eyes up, adjustable stock, global market for accessories, improvements and modularity.

Ex-1st battalion RNZIR here, I can honestly say, I hated my STEYR even if I have come to intimately know it like the back of my hand. Carried it in Afghanistan. The non-adjustable length of pull meant I have to shoot the rifle with the butt stock on my bicep instead of my shoulder because my body armor was in the way. Sucks!

I have both rifles. I’ve been well acquainted with the M16 / AR 15 since I stood on the yellow footprints in PI back in 1978. I’d like to suggest that both are a great rifle for their use. With the M-16 and a 20 in barrel I was as expected at 500 YDS. I did a little plinking out to 700. Beyond that it took a more gifted shooter than I. Now the AUG, easier to clean, no rust on plastic. I put the ACOG on it and other than the charging handle it has done well but I’ve not tried 500yds . AUG is great at inside a structure, and < 300yds. Lefties will like the AUG. I would be surprised at anything over 500 yds with the AUG. Semper Fi devil dogs!

The NZ Army replaced the AUG with the AR-type MARS-L due to the AUGs performance issues whilst serving in Afghanistan. Apparently, the NZ Army complained that the AUG had issues with range, stopping power and stoppages. PS: I know I've mentioned this before in the previous video but thought I should clarify on why the army had issues with the AUG.

In the mid 80's Steyer Aug rifles were suprisingly popular with Police. Customs agents carried them as did several Police SWAT teams. Phoenix would issue letterhead permission to purchase AUGS even after import for Civilian use was banned. Sadly that policy ended when many officers turned around and resold the rifles.

As others have mentioned in the AUG video, the comparison would be more pertinent if you compared two specific models at a similar stage in their evolution and/or time period they are from. You're basically comparing one of the latest LMTs (some of the best as far as ARs go) + the modern AR platform as it exists today along with the weight of the US domestic arms industry to the NZ Aug which is basically the same as when the AUG was introduced in the 1970s. There was also other things which seems more influenced by doctrine, training and purpose/need/use-cases, firearm laws, or more endemic of the general action rather than the specific gun. Aside from that, I also think it would help if there was a specific "US domestic/civilian arms market/industry" section reserved for talk about things which are related to, are a result of or arise from the US domestic civilian arms market.

Keep in mind, the M4A1 carbine weighs 6.49lb with the 14.5" barrel, plastic handguard, standard stock and grip, and front sight post. Add the back up rear sight, ACOG, PEQ-15/DBAL/MAWL, KAC quad rail as standard equipment and you're likely over 8lb with a loaded mag.

In my experience using them in the Royal Australian navy i found the earlier models shit. Maybe because they had been so used and abused for so long. The A1 variant with a piccatinny rail and optics other than the shitty 1.5 integrated optic were a huge improvement. They are extremely simple to feild strip, change barrels etc. There is truth about the magazine well getting in the way and lack of stock adjustment making it hard to comfortably use when wearing body armor. Other than that, it did the job.

@johnwilkerson5508

One thing that kinda bugged me about the AUGvsM16 report is something that SmallArmsSolutions talks about in his M4 development video. There were a number of rolling changes added to the M4 from the M16A2 that are invisible to the user, like the different spring, buffer, and O-ring in the extractor. I also imagine that the timing of the carbine-length gas system with the H buffer was done with the previous experience of the rifle gas system/buffer in mind, and might have been refined intentionally in the process. In other words, the M16A2 in the Australian test may post artificially low numbers when compared to today's AR-15, which is usually equipped with M4 extractors, buffers, and feed ramps. That doesn't diminish how well the AUG did in the tests, though, especially considering what internal refinements the AUG went through to get to A3.

Bought an AUG based off of your videos -- primarily because I've been wanting a bullpup, but had no context with which to make a buying decision. For a civilian, both platforms are orders of magnitude more capable than any civilian is ever likely to need. The main reason I wanted the AUG is because of its length -- same ballistic characteristics as the AR-15 (presumably) in a much shorter package. As a home defense carbine, that length *matters*. With the AR, you really have to be aware of the front of your gun. It's obviously not impossible; just requires awareness and training (two things I don't really ever expect to have in a home defense scenario). With the AUG, though, it's not an issue. Still a little miffed that it's impossible to find a decent quick access gun safe, though. The only one I could find is too thin to support a side mounted optic/torch. Bleh.
@Oberkommando
@Oberkommando 3 года назад
For home defense a short barreled AUG is definitely a better option. A lot more compact, the weight much closer to you body. The only downside might be that you have to get accustomed to shooting from the "wrong" shoulder. But that aint no problem with a little bit of training.

Had an AUG for a while, lots of ARs, various AKs, a tavor, and plenty of others. I want to like the AUG but even with modern trim it feels kind of dated, and like too many ideals were crammed into the firearm. It seems like the australians simplified it quite a bit, and their rifle might be interesting to mess with. When it comes to bullpups, I'm pretty sold on the original tavor though.

Always a lot to unpack in the comments for these comparison videos 1) Compared to the AR, the ergonomics are all messed up with an AUG: Yep, freaked me out the the first time I drove a left hand drive car after a lifetime of righthand driving. Even had a lingering thought that I simply couldn't be stuffed learning how to use a M4 after spending 20 years nailing down the F88... then they change the F88 drills which conveniently happed just as I was getting medically discharged! (we're all creatures of habit) 2) Don't like having the chamber under my nose: Valid point... if you're hand loading with C-4 3) Trigger is too heavy: If you believe every comment you read on the net about every gun ever made, then the perfect trigger is right up there with the perpetual motion machine as unachievable 4) Cant use a bullpup left handed/CQB/FIBUA: From my experience, even if you deployed every man and his dog in the ADF for the urban warfare mission, you wouldn't have enough peeps to clear out an urban area larger than an outback toilet block. Point is The F88/ AUG wasn't exactly chosen with modern urban fighting in mind. Shooting cack handed is easy enough to do 'if' you tilt an AUG to the side and lower your first round hit expectations . Besides left handers deserve to die first, so the AUG is doing the gene pool a solid... worse thing that ever happened to recruit training is letting southpaws think they deserve equal 'rights' (see, its even in the wording!)

If you look at that Australian report, you''ll see a paragraph referring to a parallel study conducted that indicates Steyr users had, on average, a significantly smaller PP. A new study is currently under solicitation to determine if the Steyr has a detrimental effect on the size of a normal(9 inch) PP, and if anything can be done to mitigate the tragic loss of mass, length, girth, bulbousness, and veiny texture in the PP.

Although if I were in a gunfight and for some reason I needed to change barrels, the AUG is the obvious choice since all you need is another barrel. For range day though, I could just bring three different uppers for my m4 and shoot different calibers for the price of 1 lower and 3 uppers. That's kinda cool I guess, nice video.
