Pause. 2 - 3 seconds & look around the room. Take just enough time for the room to wonder if something's wrong. Then hit them with a joke or some important piece of information ...

When speaking on zoom, you speak of such good ideas that fly right over my head but make so much sense now that youre saying them. People love to know that they're cared about and when you put in that extra time to speak with them about their lives, this must mean the world to them. Also, everyone loves hearing their own names so if you remember their names and consistently speak of their name, this will break down any barriers between you and whoever you're speaking to.

Thank you. I teach a Speech and Communication course for a community college. My students are preparing TED talks, so I searched RU-vid for tips. AWFUL! No diversity in the speakers, redundant "tips" about "turn on your video", a plethora of presenters who can't present--though seemingly they are pumped up on their confidence that they are experts. You are an expert. Plus you're cool. My students connected, and I am looking forward to their presentations.

Zoom fatigue is such a real thing. In addition to my own YT videos, FaceTime chats with friends, and Zoom meetings, I also teach undergrad and grad courses 3x week. In person, these were sometimes challenging, but on a virtual platform-where so many of the students can’t or won’t share turn on their cameras-it’s EXHAUSTING. Regardless, I still go back to watch myself on the recorded sessions and agree with you that it can really make a difference. I noticed how quickly I was speaking through some slides, how many (accidentally) weird faces I was making when searching for a document to share on my screen. It’s time-consuming, but worth it, because communication, as we know, is what the listener-or, in this case, the VIEWER-does.

I never considered doing breakout rooms every 7 to 10 minutes. But I would get students to engage that frequently in real life. Great tip!

Great tips! I remember when I asked you almost ten years ago if you had advice for me because I had such fear of public speaking and had to do a few presentations (scared sh@tless). You had suggested I video myself, which I did, I watched that first video recording and I was awful! Basically speaking like a robot. lol BUT it was an awesome lesson in being aware of expression, how to use my voice and body language, practice makes progress and all these years later, RU-vid and IG and FB live.

I enjoyed learning about range of emtotions from other students and how to catch the attention of the audience. Using their name catches more attention which i did not know! I believe improving my lighting will improve my speech videos drastically!

@@RiazMeghji The biggest thing is the uncontrollable aspects of it like internet speed (which I'll be plugged directly in) new tech like Ecamm, and that I've always been able to read a young audience by their reaction and more importantly, their silence. Now, I feel a little like I'm peeing in the wind and just hoping my jokes land and also translate while also praying my dog doesn't bark or my computer randomly crash.

For some reason I tend to forget to think of ONE audience member. I’ve doing my first Zoom PD presentation to my COLLEAGUES, so thanks for this. I’ve been teaching my students but this will be the first time with peers. Need better lighting.

These are such great tips! I like the idea of a poll function during the beginning prior to the meeting. Think, Pair and share is a brilliant technique to break up the time.
