I heard the great violinist Itzhak Perlman once say, the slower you learn something, the longer you remember it. Learning totally involves repetition, duration and intensity! That's the key. If you want to call it something fancy like 'graduated memory recall', great. Good for any type of learning. Good video!

Thanks for all the good advice, Ernest. Concerning the "speed limit", I've come to define mine as "the maximum speed at which I can play something WHILE STAYING TOTALLY RELAXED". I've lost years because of self-blame, tension, impatience, etc. Like many, many players. Being "gifted" is useless without the right mindset / practice habits. Only a source of deeper frustration and regrets.

I swear to God I have been long seeking someone to explain music theory to me so i get it! You are The One. I've only watched two videos but im already understanding things about music that i didn't understand simply trying to memorize the notes, scales, etc.... this video is opening my mind musically, I've been playing forever but had always been discouraged every time i've tried to learn theory, thanks, your a God-send!

The reason why we put it down every time we try is because we aren’t consistent or use the attempts frequently.

Ernest , i am a 70 yo STUDENT musician (trumpet) started in brass bands at 6 yo played till 32 without any formal musical tuition except learning to read. An accident stopped me playing till I was 62 an started afresh. I came across your concepts via a friend trying to explain scales to me and feel I have learned more in an hour than in 60 years.

I recently completed a degree in Psychology and I feel compelled to say that this video would be an excellent relatable teaching aid. I had one of those a ha moments...why didnt the Professor just explain memory processes this way??? Muscle memory - it all makes sense now!!! (Cognitive Psychology is fascinating when all the jargon clicks) Thank you!

HI,,you asked for comments...so... I was searching how to memorize lines to a scripted play...last week and your post popped up on my channel..I have also played guitar on and off since High school..I like your steps...and I think they will help with my lines too, as all you explained is happening to me automatically. the impatience ect....interestingly I can pick up my guitar and I can automatically play what I learnt at school. 34 years ago...no matter how long i let it sit there...I just need more focus as to why I want to play guitar...as it sits there and i walk past it everyday.....the thought is there...but the passion is something else anyway...thanx

Karen Venus Karen, thanks for sharing your story. I believe the passion can be re-discovered if you dig for it and discard any extra layers of no-longer-necessary trauma, which so many of us have piled on from negative experiences with music and music lessons as children.

Hi Bro, I started physically changing positions as you started off with "Relax". I'm new to piano and enrolled for classes under 2 excellent teachers but find myself with notes everywhere. Looks like I'm composing a mess 😆. My mind is wound up with theory and stuck on the circle of 5ths. Just revisited your other vid and typing up your big white board diagram today! This video helped me to slow down. I started observing my thoughts. I thought....why am I cramming all this stuff in my head? I tend to binge on knowledge and sort it later....my kind of order out of chaos technique. It helps me make mental connections and figure out relationships of things. Then my ❤ answered that question of why...it fluttered...I thought I just want to play 🎹 !! I realize since starting my journey just a few weeks ago, that I've not had enough time spent actually playing. At least not proportionate to my mental learning. I've been working OT at work most weeks for some time now...past 2 weeks more than usual. I need to simmer it down. And follow the rest of these steps you've listed. These steps are going to be my first entry of my first journal ever! Thank you so much for sharing. I appreciate you so much! Jen

Great! I have been using this method unconscously all of my life, I didn't even know this method had a name, no one taught me it before...I guess I have been doing something right for a change, lol :) I use this method with languanges and everything else in between, from time to time I have to re-adjust the "speed limits" which it depends on a lot different factors. On an other good note, it's good to know that even Deepak Chopra teaches this method. Thank you anyways for the share!

it is important to be aware of your thoughts, so when a negative thought comes up, counter with a positive one. the intervals may seem long but do it for 21 days to a month, then it'll eventually turn into a habit.

This is great. It should work for math homework too since math is a language and requires a good deal of memorization. In fact... hmmm. Why don't teachers give their students these tools when teaching them *anything*? Maybe they don't consciously think about all of these steps-- although I do think we all understand subconsciously that we aren't going to learn if we are nervous, stressed, and rushing, but it would really help if we consciously put ourselves into a relaxed state with breathing and good humor before tackling a new subject or an exam. I'd heard of the Pimsler method but never knew the essence of it. Thanks so much for breaking it all down, I think this is great; I'll probably teach it to the students I tutor in math.

Thanks for this. I had to try to incorporate this in treating patients and get them interested in doing daily exercises to help with back pain that take 30 seconds, but have to be done every day. Most other doctors I knew wouldn't give exercises since patients wouldn't do them. But they were 10 minutes to 30 minutes. But by doing 30 seconds, it changes a life. BTW I have a rolling mobilisation table that moves the spine. I inevitably fall asleep, and a 10 minute session seems like it took an hour.

Also, the very first thing I like to talk about is the rhythm. The beat. The pocket. The tempo. The groove. Learning how to tap your foot. Learning how to count. Learning how to lock in the pocket and flow with the groove. I know this is more on the 'theory' side of things, but like Vic says, "You ain't got the groove, you ain't got no pocket..."

Kimberlee Dekrey Hi Kimberlee, I learned this stuff from a few different sources: baseball, martial arts, being raised by a therapist (my dad) and a professional touring artist/songwriter (my mom), going to Deepak Chopra workshops and playing music for the attendees off and on for the last 15 years, and teaching private music lessons for the last 12 years. I also have studied marketing and sales psychology, which is all about how the mind learns and makes associations. Glad it helped!

A simple experience can prove You are right: to learn a new piece of music continuously for two hours. To learn another piece of music (similar about difficulty) by four sessions. Each session is half hour. The interval can be half day or so. One may not need two hours to master the new piece if he uses interval sessions. Any one can try for anything of learning. Thanks. 谢谢!

Hey man. I've watched last weeks video and this weeks video and I've required all my students to watch them. I've been teaching for about 10 years now and it seems I've come up with a similar philosophy on learning to play. I just used different terms. Let's say I taught them the G pent scale in the first position on the guitar. After going over it 5 or 6 times I'll take a "Brain Break". I'll ask them a question like, "What's your favorite pizza toping". Then after that BOOM, they can play it.

Thank you very much for all of this, it's extremely useful. I just have a comment concerning speed walls- I know what you mean about feeling your getting faster than you can cope with, however, often the piece has to go faster than that (I'm thinking of the Chopin études on piano), so what do we do about the speed wall? I am beginning to experiment with having no speed walls- because walls are barriers- why not just break them down? If the physical technique is perfect and you can instantaneously relax between each note, you can theoretically play as far as you want- the next step is training your brain to go as fast as your fingers. I've not actually got the yet, but it's just an idea and everything starts with ideas.
@MagicMusicMethod
@MagicMusicMethod 8 лет назад
+Esther Knight The way I would approach that is separating speed from accuracy. So first, gain accuracy at an identified speed limit. Then gradually speed it up with controlled repetition using a metronome over a specific time period, based on what you can do. And periodically go at it at higher speeds than you think you can do, studying when it begins to fall apart. Like a particle accelerator, you can learn a lot from studying the debris.

good post Ernest. how about going over the musicians workflow? by that i mean the steps involved from begining to end during playing sessions. i play keyboards and find my self at times discouraged by an ineficient workflow. turning the system on, selecting patches, finding a beat... all of that comes into play for some of us. it would be nice to hear what are your thoights about streeamlining those steps to minimize setups and get to the real play time.

I think one also needs some kind of motion with repetition . There is a need to change the subject ever so slightly. And there is a need for question and answer; where the questions are easy and direct and the answers are immediate and direct. This is the key; that one gets IMMEDIATE feedback. It is as if a teacher is sitting / standing next to you all the time correcting you when you make a mistake. That is why one may need some kind of software to get over the dull drill stuff. A real teacher needs to be around to get over the nuances of the subject.

Great video! Do you have any tips on composing music, from a subconscious point of views stead of a theoretical point of view?
@MagicMusicMethod
@MagicMusicMethod 10 лет назад
Yes, the best way I have found to compose music subconsciously is to imagine that I have a radio in my head, and I can turn the dial to any station and get a song stuck in my head. Classical, rock, jazz, folk, blues, any style. Then, if I turn the dial a little further, I can hear a station where very similar music is playing, but it's not something I have ever heard before. If I can capture that, and it really is something totally unique and new, then I have a new composition. I started doing that when I was about 6, and have never stopped.

I would recommend 1. working with a trained, professional hypnotherapist in order to go deep and find out what is causing the anxiety and 2. study and practice meditation. A good place to start with meditation is Deepak Chopra's teachings. But given what you have stated, I'm guessing there may be some pain or trauma interfering with the natural state of relaxation you seek, and so I'd recommend starting with therapy to clear out whatever is going on. Another option is to try out the Hoffman Process. www.hoffmaninstitute.org/

Repeat at increasing intervals the phrase that you are struggling with. If after a few repeats you are still struggling then break it down to a few notes. Even when you are learning a brand new piece, there will be some sections that you play note perfect straight away and others that you will struggle with. If you play the whole piece through over and over, you waste your time playing the sections that you already find easy and you fix mistakes into your muscle memory. Only play through now and then to practise the art of not stopping when you mess up. My kid is a grade 8 classical guitarist and she's only practised for about 1000 hrs in 9 years. I taught myself from her books when she was very young, so that I could sit with her while she practised and prevent her from repeating mistakes. She was on her own though from grade 4, as I stopped playing due to other commitments, but by then she had good practising technique. It also helped that she had a fun teacher who was great with little kids. Imagine what she could have achieved if she'd averaged an hr/day rather than 15 mins. Good practising technique is priceless. That same technique just got her to grade 6 standard on the piano in 18 months. So, if you are young, learn to practise efficiently and you will be awesome!
