7 Things I Got Rid Of Forever In 2022 

My one concern with the glass-vs-plastic thing is that the argument of glass being better for the environment in the long term is based on the assumption of buying/acquiring a new container. The old plastic take-out container you already have in your cabinet is absolutely more environmentally friendly to keep using than the new pyrex dish you buy to enable you to throw out (hopefully recycle) the old container. I would argue in favor of re-using the stuff you have until there's a problem with it, and then replace it with glass if your goal is reducing environmental impact. If your primary goal is having nicer stuff, then by all means, carry on. That's a valid goal. I just cringe a little at the environmental argument being used to justify disposing of something reusable while it's still reusable.

I love to hear about employers making the switch to a 4 day work week and be comfortable with the idea that their employees may be finding satisfaction and fulfillment outside of their jobs. It's a mentality I wish more employers could adopt. Thank you for leading the way on this and showing that a 4 day work week is not only doable but profitable!

I found many of the subjects discussed very relatable. I am a 70-year-old women who has experienced life from the 50's in London to Paris in the 80s,90s, 20s, and now in Mallorca. Succinctly, whatever you are experiencing now, know it will change. Your body, tastes, needs, life style. Good quality clothes are really hard to find now even if you can afford premium brands, they are not all of premium quality. I own clothes from different eras and the quality that was available at reasonable prices in my youth, would now cost a fortune if you can find items made in the same materials. I am so annoyed at myself for having discarded many clothes that I should just have kept and re-fashioned because the beautiful crepe that was often used, no longer can be found. For storage, I re-cycle glass jars. The few foodstuffs that I purchase come in glass jars and when I cook and have leftovers, raw or cooked, I transfer them to jars. Happy New Year to all and consider quality over quantity as it is better for the soul!

My rule of thumb for brands who are EVERYWHERE like the sheets one you mentioned is that if they are spending such crazy amounts on advertisements, that must take up a large part of their costs - which in turn, means that less goes into materials and labour, so the quality is likely much lower than the price suggests. There are exceptions of course, but it's usually true.

One thing that really has innovated my wardrobe is buying pieces that I feel 100% certain about. If it doesn't fit perfectly, is uncomfortable, or doesn't go with anything else in my wardrobe, then I don't buy it. Now most of the clothes I have are things I actually want to wear.

Got rid of: 1. Toxic family member 2. Lower paying job with inconsistent hours 3. My habit of overbuying groceries (buying only what I know I’ll use to reduce food waste).

When my roommate moved in to college for our sophomore year, she put all of her hangers in the closet backwards. Like, with the hook facing you. After wearing/washing an item, she would put it back the easy way. At the end of the semester, she got rid of all the clothes on hangers still facing the wrong way.

Aside from the video topic, I'd like to appreciate Chelsea's development. I'm on this channel since 2018 (I think), and I see a drastic growth in presentation and confidence Chelsea is radiating. This is so inspiring!

Recommendation for glass food storage: IKEA They have glass storage tubs for food in a large variety of sizes, all dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer safe. They also sell the lids and tubs separately so easy to replace if you have lost or broke one or the other and they have a variety of lid types so fit different looks including click lids, wooden lids etc.

I got rid of a ton of cheap clothes that were no longer serving me or were ill-fitting (usually from the start). I started thrifting very high-quality pieces and used the 1-in-1-out rule to transform my waredrobe. I have never loved my clothes more! Sure, there were a few thrifting mistakes, but I don't feel bad about re-donating a $5 or $10 item here and there.

I had to get rid of TikTok this year because, holy crap, it’s so addictive.

I actually found it extremely hard to let stuff go when I was overweight. I'd either have clothes that I could no longer fit into or that I "might fit into" once I lost the weight. Those took up a lot of room. Part of the overarching issue was that I didn't buy good quality clothes because if I spent a lot on a sweater and lost some weight, I could no longer wear it, thus money wasted. Once I got down to a more reasonable weight, I could more permanently purchase good quality to break the fast fashion issue trend.

SAY THEIR NAME! BROOKLINEN! Lmaooo. I remember they advertised with all my favorite podcast so I wanted to support; I saw those prices and ran. There is no reason for sheets to be that expensive.

nr 4 is SO TRUE! my husband has worked as a software engineer at many different facilities. They literally have the SAME product and stop the machine to only change the packaging and start again. Seriously, there is NOTHING else in there. This goes for food, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, medicine... basically EVERYTHING

I sold my dining room table and set of chairs, and turned that space into a reading corner! I realized that whenever I do have people over, we're always hanging out in the living room by the TV and I never eat meals in the dining area anymore. Since the dining room table was by all the windows in my living room, it felt like such a waste to have that whole space taken up by something I never used. Instead, it now has a giant comfy chair with tons of pillows and blankets which is perfect for cuddling with the cats while you read a book and look out the front windows!

I am loving this concept of "doing more with less" that seems to be seeping into everywhere; it seems like a lot of people, myself included, are really striving to appreciate what they already have and can work with, or seeking out quality more than superficial, virtual, fast, living.

Living in Montana we store our winter clothes in the garage until it’s time to bring them out and we do the same for our summer clothes every time the season changes. It helps our closet and dresser not feel so cluttered.

I also got rid of a lot of clothing I was hanging onto "just in case" or online purchases I was too lazy to return. Finally got rid of it after years of feeling guilty. Just had to accept that the mistakes were already made and all I can do is change my habits going forward.

The “Minimal-ish” mom content creators that I’ve been consuming for the last 6 months call that the “Time Will Tell” Bin. Once the date passes, you genuinely don’t even need to look at the things (it’ll make you want to keep the stuff again!) - just take the whole box straight to donation! Love the concept of “Wait and See” with a deadline.

Replaced plastic with glass in 2021 since I became more health focussed! I’m doing no spend year 2023 except anything needed to complete lots of unfinished projects! Working on these will replace consumerism!

We have an old house and in the 6 years we've owned it, weve done 3 major overhauls - a loft extension, kitchen overhaul and a bathroom/storage overhaul. I'm never, ever doing anything more. Six months later and I'm still finding building dust inside books and on skirting boards. It's never ending and you ALWAYS go over budget, regardless how conservatively you spend.

Why is everyone taking out their bathtubs? I absolutely have to have one, and while house shopping I found everyone had recently redone their bathrooms to remove the tubs. A tub was my only preference and I thought it was a pretty reasonable ask.

Stopped buying orchids. Now learning how to grow second stems and blooms from orchids I got last year. 3 out of 3 now have a new leaf, the precursor to a bloom. Yeah!

To me the most important factor about sheets is softness. I can't get over how many are advertised at insane prices when there are one or two brands with a set of bamboo sheets for under $100 that are super soft! A sheet review segment would be nice! Hint hint!

I've always aspired to be the kind of person who wears the same things year after year and who has a certain style and purges everything else, but over the last year i realised that, having ADHD, this just isn't realistic for me. My style changes from super masculine to super feminine, super functional to more fashionable pretty frequently and if i didn't purge my clothes from past phases i rewear them when the phase comes back around. Even if they sat in storage for a year or two

I made the Pyrex switch a few years back and I have NO regrets. Life is so much less stressful. I started with the round 2 cups, but I eventually added the rectangular 2 cups as well for batch cooking. I also dislike mismatched mugs, so I switched to lead-free uniform glass there, too. (And some stainless steel travel mugs from Brumate, since I was SO impressed with their champagne flutes.)

As another alternative to glass storage containers, stainless steel mixing bowls are available in many sizes, are extremely cheap (like literally $1 - $5 each), so you can have dozens of them, and they serve multiple purposes in the kitchen. You still need plastic wrap or aluminum foil to cover them for storage, but this is both inexpensive and easy. And they also transfer to the oven (and don't even need to warm up first!)

Omg Chelsea you are relatable as hell😂 however with the glass recycling comment- Pyrex and other ovenware often isn’t as widely recyclable as you implied (if at all) because it’s manufactured differently to withstand oven temps than common glass bottles or jars would be. This shouldn’t really matter because like it was said it should last a long time, but definitely check with your waste hauler or recycling service before throwing ovenware in the recycling bin.

The last one for sure!! I've been transitioning to glass storage containers that have air tight seals and I love them. I kept a few plastic ones that are good for transporting food or storing dry goods but I try to only use glass for the fridge and freezer.

I'm confused why in this video, we didn't name the brand of the fancy sheet but called out and featured an influencer for making content just not to Chelsea's taste? I don't even know who she is but it felt like an unnecessary dig at a creator? Unless she's like doing something really harmful?

Baby items and clothes. We've been trying and trying with IVF to have another child and I've reached the conclusion that if by some miracle we DO get pregnant again, it won't be planned. So I've donated most of the baby stuff we own to local foster families and am working on giving away the last of it probably in the next month. It's been emotional and heart-rending to give up on this dream but we're happy that the items we are passing on are going to serve other families and children in need.

Linoto makes gorgeous linen sheets that are handmade and 100% linen. They take a while to be made but worth the money and wait. They wear so well over the years.

ALL: remember never to wallpaper your bathroom!!! This is a recipe to 100% get mold growth that you will never see or clean off. The mold will grow behind the wallpaper and you will never see it start to develop.

This was awesome! In 2022 I got rid of extra cosmetics, down to a minimal routine of 8 items (including cleanser & moisturizer). My rule is one in one out, only replacing items that are empty. We need a video about how to chose clothing that can last long and is an "investment piece." I feel like I've heard that advice from TFD a lot, but I don't know what materials, brands, construction, etc. of garments makes for a long lasting, high quality item.

KEEP THE BATHTUB. Stalls are really popular and trendy, but given that you own, it's a good idea to keep a tub in at least one bathroom. Lots of people want tubs -- people with kids especially -- and a four-piece bath, no matter how slightly fuddy-duddy it may seem at the moment, is ultimately a selling feature when the time comes.

Completely agree about the cost and disruption of home renovations. We live in a townhouse (line of five) and the property next door is in its 11th week of renovations. Costly for the absent owners certainly but the disruption and noise has been entirely reserved for us and the neighbours on the other side. It's made us think twice about the renovations we had planned!! As always, love your vlog.

I had the bathroom very minimally renovated in 2021 and it dragged out over 3 months when it was supposed to take a couple days (week max). I got a gym membership which ended up being great and showered there. But the toilets had to be removed a few times or were otherwise inaccessible and that was a nightmare (had to drive to a gas station, but found out some people were peeing into bottles in the garage ugh) and it made me realize I 1000000000% need to be able to rent an RV or something to live in if I ever do that again. Also I checked the work out and was pleased initially but I can now see about 15 things that are criminally wrong--tldr, if you can do it yourself, you should.

I replaced all my plastic storage with glass last year as well. It was a bit of an investment, getting different sizes and some specific Werk and Ball jars for specific things, but I LOVE the look and I glass is so much easier to work with. I freeze it, can with it, dishwasher safe, etc. Its great.

I think I know what “fancy sheet” company you’re talking about that every RU-vidr tries to sell. Those sheets are crap. The best sheets ever are from Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn. They are pricey but so worth the money! They last a long time, don’t discolor, and are so comfortable.

Glass container rec - IKEA has pretty great and super afforadable glass containers. The lids are plastic but are high quality and have replaceable seals. They also don't stack (well they do stack but then have a tendency to get stuck...), but I just store them with the lids on. And as I use them for meal prep, they're most often full and in my fridge. They're also great for wfh meal prep because they're oven-proof so can do leftovers and put them into the oven to heat up (I put into a cold oven just in case of sudden temperature change). Rather than just recycling my old plastic containers (or ones that I get from takeout), I repurpose for things like sending food home with friends, various gardening projects, bathroom cupboard organizing, etc. They still might end up in the recycling but they'll have had a good life first at least.

When I moved in with my partner his food storage containers were so much better (matching sets of plastic and then glass containers with plastic lids). Beyond just being easier to store, I find I no longer dread meal clean up and storing leftover like I used to when I had to hunt for a matching lid.

Got rid of 50 year old kitchen. It was really inconvenient for about 6 weeks, as a total gut job happened, but worth it. We have to reno 2 bathrooms however we have 3 so not as inconvenient. May I suggest a banana plant if the fiddle leaf fig doesn't work out. Had 1 for 3 years now. Lives thru our forced air heating + A/C - loves to be watered once a week. Cheap as little plants, produce pups you can give to friends + around 5 years you can get bananas.

Uk resident here... Ikea top end duvet sets are about the same price as everyone else's cheapo sets, and are usually nice quality pure cotton!

Everytime I hear about people’s clothing overconsumption, I’m like lol I’m too overweight and disproportionate to even have this problem. I couldn’t buy enough stuff per month that feels good, looks good, and is reasonably priced to ever reach a problematic amount. So I’m still out here wearing the same stretchy Ts and leggings I’ve been wearing for 3+ years. I don’t know how normal sized people aren’t picky AF considering all the options available to them in comparison. I have to be non-picky because there are so few options for me available. I actually would like to have more clothing because my outfits are very stale but they work fine and it is what it is.

Not to be that person, but "from the same manufacturer/factory" does not mean "is the same quality." Large factories can support many individual lines with varying levels of quality materials, output, and processes. It all comes down to the contracts that the brand has with the manufacturer and how good the brand is about checking that the quality is at the level they desire. The brand is responsible for speccing out and verifying the design and quality of the product, and the factories deliver. Having multiple brands in the same factory can provide economic efficiencies. For example, a batch of cotton can be split so the higher quality bins go to tier-1 brands and the lower quality might be within spec for a cheaper tier-3 brand. Now, more expensive brands do have a "name tax" for the same quality you might get from an affordable brand, but that's on the brand and not the factory. Expensive doesn't always mean better, but same factory doesn't always mean same quality.

Thanks for the nice video! I would like to point out that heat resistant glass, such as Pyrex, is non-recyclable! It can actually contaminate the glass recycling stream, so always dispose of it in a regular waste bin!

~12 minutes in talking about renovations, totally love everything you’ve said but I also want folks to know how accessible DIY skills for projects that may not even seem basic are, obviously it can spiral but a HUGE value add of saving money and doing diy (takes away your time of course) is knowing the skills to fix x when needed later and not pay inflated contractor/renovation deals then. I highly recommend everyone trying to customize something they own to their exact liking to get into a diy mindset without as much risk but willing to learn. Like IKEA hacks. Time is usually the biggest sink but depending how much “your” time is “worth” of your own measure for the effort trying to renovate a small room can be so gratifying and empowering, and still save you 10s of thousands too

I’ve loved the switch to glass storage I did a couple years ago. I have not missed the plastic. I was gifted a small set of plastic that I use for dry storage or items that won’t be reheated so it has lasted better than previous plastic sets as a result of the lighter use.

I've gone through both a full kitchen reno and full bathroom reno now, and I have to agree with Chelsea that a bathroom is way harder to deal with in the meantime. Definitely good to wait on that and do some temporary fixes till you're ready for that struggle

My closet looks like one of those stock photo closets that have about 10 pieces in them. Getting rid of all the extra fluff has made finding something to wear much easier. I didn't realize how many ways I can mix and match. It's kind of cool.

Speaking of sheets! Ugg has this new brand or like sector called Koolaburra. I bought their sheets and a comforter from Kohl's and they are amazing. Totally not cheap but not super bougie expensive. I just looked online and they are made with Polyester Microfiber (Not sure what that means lol but they are soft and cozy!). I am still a ~young~ adult and never have cared about bedding stuff before but I love these pieces. Very comfy. I feel like a beautiful baby angel when I go to bed now. I am used to sleeping with random bed sets from Walmart lol.

I bought some Parachute sheets and they were so thin and I treated them SO WELL because of the price and still the fitted sheet elastic blew out faster than any other sheet I've ever had. I'll stick with on sale, Nordstrom Brand sheets from now on.

I so hear you on the renovation pains and I'm on the other side of the pond - seems it's universal! Having said that, here in Italy we have companies that specifically do a bathtub-to-shower swap in a day, they probably exist in the US as well. Very interesting about the 4-day workweek!

So with you on renovations - we redid our unheated attic (it needed a new roof anyway, we had pest issues) and opened up the roof, added dormers, etc., And it went way over budget as well and makes me reticent to do major projects like that again. I am way less intimidated by cosmetic changes like tiling or flooring or adding light fixtures now, but anything involving opening up walls and plumbing / electric is a huge undertaking.

Two things: 1. Fiddle leaf figs can be tricky! They act like they love their spot then boom, they start dropping leaves like crazy 2. I got an awesome, handmade duvet cover from a maker on Etsy. Would highly recommend checking there for linens to see what’s out there

IKEA has great glass storage containers in the 365 line, they come in plastic too but the glass ones are great, they have like three different types of lids you can buy too, highly recommend 👍🏻best IKEA buy ever.

Its very hard to balance clothes buying for me, because I was raised by very frugal parents and although they 100% believed in "quality not quantity" for things like appliances furniture etc.. I was somewhat shamed for spending money on "frivolous" things like clothes/makeup/etc.. so I would tend to buy things on sale a lot and tended to use the price tag as a determining factor for my wardrobe but it left me with a lot of ill fitting things that I didn't *really love* but justified by telling myself oh well it was on sale/I'm saving money for more important things. However one piece of advice I held onto when I was getting into minimalism a few years ago was "if you wouldn't buy it full price don't buy it" It kind of changed my perspective and encouraged a bit more of the "quality not quantity" mindset to come to my wardrobe as well, so now when I go to buy clothes I don't look at the price tag first thing, I find something I like and try it on then determine how much I would pay based on the quality and how it fits THEN check the tag and determine if I can afford it. I try to think if it's on sale it's a nice bonus but it doesn't HAVE to be on sale for me to make the purchase. It's worked pretty well for me so far... I would almost say too well because my standards for clothing and how it should fit and make me feel are almost too high and I've realized how awful the quality of things are these days and concluded that I could probably do it better myself. So I'm starting to learn how to sew my own clothes giving me more control over the outcome, which I know isn't for everyone but until companies start doing better I'll have to do it myself.

Personally I am doing 4 day work week. I love it and it is the only thing making the work worthwhile still. My coworkers rotate. So one week we get Friday off, the next Monday. That way we get regular weekends, and longer weekends. We're looking at transitioning more of the team to the schedule. It has allowed me to travel more, relax more, work on art, and camp.

I would reconsider opening the wall from the kitchen because while I don't know your specific New York apartment, I have lived in a few of them and it was my experience that range hooding and ventilation is a joke. If you open your wall to the rest of your living space, you are enlarging the opportunity for grease laden air to mingle with the rest of your place and precipitate gunky dust on everything. Think of why open kitchen shelves look pretty in photos but in practice are a terrible idea. My opinion, of course :-) Love and respect!

Food lasts longer in glass than in plastic. Try it. Cut a pepper and put one half in plastic and the other in glass. See which turns slimmy fastest. I didn't believe until I saw it myself. Now I use pickle jars to store cut veggies.

I've never had that issue with having the itch to buy too much clothing too often. I like to buy good pieces and keep them for a long time so I don't think clothing rental would be good for me; but now if they had the same idea for HOME DECOR... ughhh I'd save soo much money! Constantly finding new design ideas you like is expensive!

We spent Covid shopping and now we are overwhelmed!

We've been slowly making the switch over to glass storage. It's pretty much at 99%. My husband has Bonne Maman jams on his English muffin every day, so we have a ton of the jars just hanging out. We have found they are the perfect size to portion out a big batch of pasta sauce and freeze. They also are used for nails/screws storage, salt, etc. and I often will use them to take in things like carrot slices or yogurt when I go into work. You don't have to buy a whole new set of glass to make the switch! :)

I invested in glass tupperware almost 5 years ago now, and I highly recommend! I used to buy tupperware every year cause the plastic ones just don't hold up, but since going glass, I haven't even thought about it

I'm still weary of tick tok, though not because of the generational gap, but mainly because of the way it treats personal data and how addictive it can become. I'd rather not take my chances and steer clear of it personally. But I guess it's possible to use it responsibly, as long as the joy it brings outweighs these risks for you

I've found that products on Amazon are often more expensive than products elsewhere. I'll use Amazon like a search engine, see if the Amazon store has an independent website, and buy it (often much cheaper) directly from them instead. I still don't like using the 'Zon as a search engine, though (what about the great indie brands without a presence there?)
