I think No. 6 should included a “check your ego when you carry” proviso. I always tell people thinking of applying for CCW, “you can NEVER get into a fight again,” by which I mean you may NEVER lose your temper, may NEVER respond to a harmless, albeit ugly, insult with anything but indifference. Some dope calls you the ugliest mudder pucker he ever saw? Walk away. A guy in another car threatens to kick yer ass? Drive away. A guy so drunk he is falling down takes a swing and falls to the ground? Call the cops and walk away. The ONLY time - repeat ONLY - you can used your weapon is to counter a deadly physical threat or the threat of grievous bodily harm (the language of the Penal law will vary from state to state, and some states have a stand your ground law, which I consider imbecilic - if you can walk away from a drunken fool and save a life, do it).

I adopted this mentality years ago long before I ever considered a CCW permit or owning any firearms. I found out I sleep better at night not caring about what people try to insult me with and not holding any grudges against them.

Absolutely !! Well said. I've been shooting pistols, rifles and shotguns for close to 40 years. The "Cowboy" or "John Wick" mentality has NO place in our day-to-day. Drawing on another individual has got to be your VERY LAST resort. Best to You and Yours. Be well. Be safe.

I am a disabled veteran who uses a wheelchair. when i got my permit 10 years ago i couldn't find anyone willing to train/ help me. now 10 yrs later I'm helping other veterans/ disabled folks with negotiating the difficulties with CC and shooting

I think there should be a 5th rule of firearms safety: make sure your gun is secure when not in use or carried. There are way to many instances of guns being stolen then being used in crimes. It doesn't relate to carrying or use of a gun but it does relate to safety.

Thanks for the clear summary of CCW considerations. After my first interview I had a chance to ask the deputy about some of the weirdest things he had heard. By far the worst were hostile 2nd Amendment "internet warriors" wanting to argue and challenge the legitimacy of every step in the process. He said those applicants are usually easy NO's. The temperaments of many of these people get revealed pretty quickly in the process - and that ends up making everyone else safer. He also alerted me that California may require CCW insurance coverage in the next year or so.

Thanks for the tips Myles! Always informative and no matter what level you are, there's something valuable you can take away from them. People think you have to be a SEAL to be efficient and effective against a threat. Those days are over. You can get a Harvard education off the internet, and you can get extremely good at protecting yourself and others without a million in training from uncle sam. This is how we get "well regulated." I would also add to consider shooting in IDPA or USPSA events, which may not always be realistic but do help improve your shooting and gun handling skills. Plus, they add an element of stress associated with the performance anxiety when shooting against the clock with a half dozen or more people watching you.

Maybe one more to add is to take a use of deadly force class that specifically relates to your state laws in the use of deadly force. Understanding as simple as when you can even display or point your gun at someone not to mention if you have to shoot someone. All the handling and tactical proficiency will be meaningless if you go through all that to not understand the law of using your gun and lose it all and end up in prison. Which is more common than some people think at least from many stories I've seen. Those incidents are preventable if they would have informed themselves on that topic.

I would add two more where: The first, you need to really contemplate and asses why it is you feel the need to cart a firearm around to begin with. Psychologically think about the consequences of taking another life, and of the impacts that will have on the life of you, your family, and the family of the person you may potentially kill. The second, is learning escalation of force and to handle problems with your words and if necessary your hands first. Just because you carry a gun, doesn’t mean you are Armed. That weapon can be taken off of you, and you could lose your life to your own gun. Or shoot a non-combatant. I’m a combat veteran and a concealed carrier who has had to use my weapon as a civilian before. People often don’t realize that even if you are found to be in the clear, you could still face state, federal and especially civil charges if you take somebody’s life. Mountains of lawyers fees, and the possibly of losing your right to carry a gun ever again if you are found guilty. Get insured and learn to protect yourself without a weapon first, so that weapon never has to leave its holster where it belongs.

Hi Tactical Hyve!. Still waiting for the results of my Live Scan and hope to get the green light to begin the CCW training. (California) On the application there was a section to put down the weapons you intend to carry. I listed my Sig P230 along with the serial number. It was the only weapon I had in my possession at that time. May I add a weapon that I did not initially list? I did not know they would ask that question. I would like to carry my Glock 19 but I just purchased it last week. How do you do a "weapon add on"? I can have up to three weapons according to the Permit. Is it just a matter of bringing three desired weapons to the actual training?? Thanks so much and I really like your videos. Can anyone help me out?

First question to ask yourself, can you take a human life in preservation of your own? I have had several nurses from the ER and OR walk out of class after I asked them that question. They thought about the question and honestly told me no, I could not. If that is you, carrying a firearm is a liability and it will get you killed. The nurses I had in class all told me, we trained our entire lives and dedicated our careers to preserving life. They understood the severity of using a firearm in self defense and knew they could not use lethal force.

When any friends, relatives, close acquaintances, etc are buying their first gun, or even their first handgun, I never offer to teach them the basics nor will I say yes I'll teach them if they ask me to. Instead I buy them 1 hour of new shooter instruction at my preferred local range. Intro to safe handling of their new or soon-to-be new pistol, field stripping and cleaning, loading, firing, and the principles of marksmanship. You can do all that in an hour.

Foece on force is a great training tool that will enlighten you about how a real gun fight might go and educate you on some of your defensive strengths and weaknesses. However, know that when you get hit with an air soft or "sim" round on an unprotected area of your body, it will sting and it will leave a mark. It is not pain free.

I went to the range with my dad and rented a glock 19, beretta storm and I forget the 3rd gun but when it was all said and done I liked my dad's Springfield XD the best and thats how the xd became my 1st gun. Now 5 years later I have a bunch of guns but still prefer my XD, the S&W shield feels a little better and carries better but Im in CA with freedom week mags for my xd subcompact so having 13 and 16 rd mags vs 7 and 8 justifies carrying my xd over a shield. Now Im tempted to ignore what you are saying because I cant find a place to rent an hk p200sk but I can buy one at my local gun store. Even if I keep carrying my XD I want that hk so bad. Once I leave CA Im so gonna buy a hellcat! That and the sig 360 or whatever are for sure bucket list guns for me.

I was invited to my dearest friends son's birthday party out of town, and his brothers neighbors ended up showing up and he's not exactly a nice guy or well versed in this universe, and he brought his glock to a 6 year Olds birthday party incase "someone gets out of hand" keep in mind, nobody was drinking alcohol or smoking weed, no loud music and just a good vibe all around, and I didn't even think to bring mine, but this guy was getting up off the chairs and every time putting his fire arm towards the kids, while on the table top, and any time he moved angles on the seat or got up he would take his glock out and keep it in someone's general direction, I guess when I got a "BB GUN" pulled on me and my German Shepard while training him to walk around my own neighborhood I realized tomorrow is never guaranteed and that safety starts with YOU. I'm never pulling my fire arm out unless my wife and animals or house is under attack.

Pro tip: You can take the ccw guns that you buy but dont like to carry and stash them all around town. That way you are never far from a stashed gun and dont have to worry about the extra weight. Great spots like under the water fountain at the gym, the dumpster behind work, the bushes by the kid's school, the bread-aisle at walmart. This allows me to wear my favorite bicycle shorts everywhere but not have any obvious bulges sticking out.

Never use a safety on your carry weapon. Safeties will get you killed. Take professional training - .never learn ftom friends. A beginner class is just that - a BEGINNER CLASS not a madtercless . Definitely try as many guns as you can before purchasing.. Get a decent holster and practice drawing from concealed. Start dry then.move to live. BUY INSURANCE!!!!!!! ...

Carrying a firearm is like purchasing an expensive car. If you cant afford what it cost to take care of it you shouldn’t buy it. Firearm training is expensive and on going. People don’t talk about it but it’s for the rich or at least we’ll off. Training and practice cost money

Not really sir. #1.Save for at least 1 formal class per year #2 find a place to train ie.. a friend's property or blm land that is secluded. #3. Use inexpensive targets like paper plates. If you have kids allow them to draw and paint targets for you. Added bonus you get to introduce your kids to the community and guns the right way. You can purchase a $2000 staccato or a $299 Taurus, that choice is yours. A well placed 22lr is just as effective as a 45 +p. Money is not an issue for anything someone really wants. Do the 30 day challenge of writing down every penny spent. I'm sure you will find $25-$50 a month in expenses you can shift towards your self defense goals. That's $300-$600 per year. You only have to compete with yourself. Start where you are and grow from there. I hope this helps someone.

The CCW classes are a joke. You can literally shoot at the ceiling and still pass. I highly recommend taking a shooting class with someone who is experienced and qualified or watching some how to shoot videos on YT and going to the range and practicing every month if you can at the very least.
