I think this has been a video many people have been waiting for! I regularly get questions from people wanting to buy the new Suzuki Jimny JB74 model and I thought it would be useful to publish a video about my experience and recommendations. I will say that you should definitely do your own research and if you're already a jimny owner, you might have different views and experiences of course. However, I really hope that this video will answer some questions for future jimny owners, but please also check out the following articles:

The most honest review I have come about so far. Thank you so much for sharing your insight. What I also love the most is that you speak from personal experience and drove the car for an entire year. I still love the Jimny and will now add more ways to improve it as soon as I purchase mine. Thanks for sharing

Awesome Video thank you, it confirmed a lot of things. We live opposite Frazer so she will be going over there a lot. I decided against the GVM upgrade (preferred to save $1,000 ) and chose the ARB Old Man Emu lift. its just the 2 of us and don't surf so am going to take the risk, but understand completely where you are coming from. Will be doing Rust treatment before we do anything else, as well as a tire change to 215'S and roof rack.
@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
That’s completely understandable and it’s good that you’ve looked into the way you will be using the car before deciding to not go with the GVM. It’s not for everyone and obviously expensive 😅 absolutely do the rustproofing and keep it topped up every year. 215s will be great for the beach 👌🏽

My first recommendation to people who are looking at buying a Jimny is to upgrade the suspension. I installed the ARB OME after owning the Jimny for a few months (parts were on backorder) and the difference in handling both on and off-road was like day and night. I very strongly recommend it because the Jimny can feel a bit sketchy on the road, it's a bit squirmy when going over potholes and gets blown around a lot. the ARB suspension improved the on-road handling so much that it's like a different vehicle. I also upgraded the speakers with the factory upgrade brackets for 5 1/4" speakers, I do recommend getting the rear ones installed too, it adds a lot of sound space and sounds fantastic.
@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
Yeah I agree, the suspension makes a big difference handling wise. I think it really improved the overall stability and safety on the road - highways especially - so it’s definitely a recommendation from my end too 😃

Since you are tackling upgrades I am terrifed of doing and doing it yourself, you are my hero. Lot's of people in other parts of the world have never heard of a GVM upgrade, most certainly that is something I have never heard about in South Africa and possibly not those in Britain either. What is involved in a GVM upgrade? The Jimny has a very low limit of 35 kilos on the roof and lots of other factors such as the load the car is already carrying and a lift kit might reduce that. There are only two actual ways of getting around the weight limitations of the Jimny and that is A) reducing the weight of whatever you are carrying by using lighter and smaller versions of what you are loading the Jimny up with or B) by towing a trailer or teardrop caravan. I have given up on the idea of quality sound on the Jimny and am now looking at one of those cheap Chinese 1 DIN sound units that have two reasonable loud speakers built right into that DIN unit meaning that at least I will be able to listen to audio books in MP3 format. The Jimny is the car for me since it is the only thing that can do what I want to do at a third of the price. And on top of it, the Jimny does it either as well, or better. The other thing that appeals to me is the DIY aspect, Jeeps, Land Rovers and Land Cruisers excepted, other overlanders are not upgraded nearly as much as the Jimny is. The critical difference is that I look at what people are doing to the Jimny and thinking, "Hey, that is not so difficult, even I can do it," which certainly is not the case with other vehicles. A few years ago, a photo floated around on the Internet of a Jimny and all the components that made up the Jimny laid out in front of it. I asked myself then what stops anyone with the expertise from building something like the Jimny and ever since that photo the Jimny has been a can-do car for me. That should have been the Jimny's marketing slogan: Can-do!
@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
Ah thank you so much! Yes, it's (i guess) less commonly talked about in some countries, however Australia is quite strict in terms of overloading vehicles without the appropriate registrations and legal modification plates. Yes, there's (legally) not really much you can do in Australia to increase the roof load limit as it's set out by Suzuki Australia, which makes it the standard any insurance company would follow as well if there was an accident with overloading. In saying that, casually going off-road with a bit more weight on top is not really what it's about, it's more the everyday weight that you carry around driving to shops, work etc. Upgrading your speakers is definitely worth it! It's actually quite a simple job and there's a couple of RU-vid videos out there. I agree, it's an awesome vehicle 😊👌

Hi thanks for the review very informative and has some good advise, as for noise and handling it is on pare with other 4WD's that I use at work all the time, but the sound proofing is a simple solution good tip. My wife and I test drove a Jimny and a Vitarra Turbo Allgrip last week and the Jimny won put the order in for an automatic and will have to wait. Could have bought a manual straight off the shop floor, the wait time is getting a lot shorter here in WA.

I have a 3 gen jimny with a 2” lift and front steering damper. I completed a 3,500 k trip on black top and nearly 2,000 gravel on the gun barrel h/w. The car performed perfectly on the black top at 105 kms . I tow a small trailer with the same wheel base and same wheels as Buzz. It is also the same width as Buzz so where the car goes the trailer goes, nothing sticking out past Buzz. Awesome setup as I don’t have to overload Buzz. I would send a photo but don’t know how to do it. It’s the perfect long range setup. As for noise I think the 3 gen models are more quiet because they are lined inside. The 4gen has metal showing everywhere. As long as people understand it’s not a family cruiser , those who purchase one will have a big smile on their face as they leave the overload big boys stuck in the tight tracks. The only thing I cannot understand is why there is so many 4 gens for sale in Perth? Nice rant anyway. Regards Robert from the locked up stuff up state of Western Australia.

Hi Rob thanks for the comment! Yeah absolutely it's an awesome car and I love it I just reckon it's good to know what you're buying. I've had so many people ask about the car and wanting to do stuff I reckon it's not made for (at least not the best type of car for - like e.g. a rooftop tent) but people also need to figure this out themselves :) Hope you get out soon from WA!

Good advice..I agree with you; I've always had jimnys (2006, 2010, 2016). Now I have a 2021 and it has more or less the same issues... Super small, underpowered and noisy in highways, shitty speakers, bumpy ride, etc... But as the 3rd gen I love it..super tough, reliable; a damn indestructible little tractor..and its made in japan (that thing matters to me..) I always keep them stock from factory (except the tires changed to 215/75R15). To anyone who ask me about this car I say "it looks cool and cute, but it's definitely not for everyone. Try it well before you buy it" (if you can find one) I use it mainly in the farm... I also drive a 2019 Prado (other beast..)..good channel

@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
Thanks for that! ☺️ No it is definitely not a must. I don’t have one and also don’t live rural, so likelihood of hitting a kangaroo is low compared to people who live more inland. It is however also meant for protection should you be inky and be in an accident so it is mostly based on your need and how much you use the car. Hello! To everything what you said about the JB74 is correct and i can say it's the same what we say here in the germany about the Jimny. You said you got an gvm-upgrade for the Jimny, which is great but in Germany we can get htis only for using the Jimny as a snow plower with integrated top speed limit of 60 Km/H while driving with the plower. Yuor thoughts about buying pieces for the Jimny from the aftermarket is good, i don't know anything about the australian law and the rules for tuning a car, but her in Germany sometimes it's better to buy parts from Suzuki, because here you need a document (ABE or Teilegutachten) for most af the tuning parts. ABE / General operating license: which means put it on your car and you can drive legaly or Teilegutachten / parts certificate: which means you can put it on, but then you have to drive to a car checkpoint if the installation is correct and fits to your car but when you by a tuning parts from Suzuki and it doesn't matter if it's in the Accessories catalogue fom Suzuki of your country but from another country you can use it without any documents. As an example: I'm using an original Suzuki Transfer case skid plate and this part is not available at Suzuki in Germany, but in Russia it's a part in their Suzuki Accessories catalogue, so i bought it there and can use it here without any documents, because it's an original Suzuki part. Other needful parts for the Jimny you can't find on the aftermarket can be found in the Suzuki Accessories catalogue as well! In Russia you can order inner wheel arch liners, who keeps the noise from the wheelhouses out. In Brasil you can get an original Snorkel for the Jimny, in case you don't like the look from the TJM model.
@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment! Yes that is true, I know that other countries have stricter rules in terms of that. If the suzuki engine needs to be replaced, of course the suzuki genuine parts are recommended, however with aftermarket things such as tinting, rustproofing, smaller accessories, speakers etc, that does not have to be installed by a suzuki dealer in Australia, nor does it have to be a suzuki genuine part (this however depends on whether it’s an accessory or an actual part going into the engine, then it would be different). Thanks for the insight! Definitely good to know 🙌🏽

Lots of sage advice in here. One thing I might say re the speaker upgrade. There are a many better speakers and better value than the Pioneer system Suzuki sell at a very premium price. I have gone for a split system with a tweeter on the front columns for better separation and quality. I've Chosen the Morel 502 MK II 5.25". The difference is night and day. You will marvel at how crap the original speaker is when you hold it. It's virtually weightless and probably the cheapest and nastiest speaker put into a modern car.

@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
Hey, thanks for the comment! I think by the sounds of it you should definitely go with the constant load option in the back (200+kg) as that will prevent it from sagging. You might also want to go constant in the front but that might depend on whether you want a bull-bar or not. I run constant in front without a bull-bar (yes - I've been warned my shocks might wear out over time) however I will look into a bull-bar eventually. I am although looking at changing out my temporary to constant in the back as I find it sagging a bit when loaded. 🌞

Hey! Thanks so much 😃 235/75/15 isn’t illegal in Queensland because the tyre size from stock to 235 stays within the 50mm increase limit only being a 44mm increase. But anything above a 50mm increase in tyre size would be illegal and required to be engineered/or approved otherwise 😊

Great advice. I did not know the benefit of the pre-registration GVM upgrade. Definitely something that anyone on the waiting list should think about before they take delivery. @@ExploreJimny This leads to something else that might be interesting. There are occasional videos and photos of 4 door Jimny's seen on trial in India. Therefore, as with the 4-door Jeep Wrangelr we have the same engine, possibly upgraded suspension and somewhat heavier car and suddenly the load carried can legally be increased. I understand how the regulation works, but something does not add up for me where the mechanics of making a car heavier increases the load carrying capacity.

Sorry but...aren't the tires mounted inside-out? Shouldn't the white lettering be on the outside?
@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
No you can choose either in or out 😉 I didn’t like the white lettering so placed them white in. It doesn’t matter what way 👌🏽
@adifilote1485
@adifilote1485 2 года назад
I did not know that was an option. I have them on mine as well but it always felt logical to have the white on the exterior. When I had them mounted at the service, the guy mounting tires was laughing about somebody having them on the inside. Now I feel bad for laughing with him :/

Still unstable despite your suspension upgrade?
@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
No it's not, it's definitely better. When I drove around with the stock suspension it was pretty wobbly on the highway (if a truck drove by for example) but now, also with the 235/75/15 tyres, it's much more stable and "grounded" 😄

Also add poor paint quality to this, with no consumer law support from suzuki. It's very frustrating
@ExploreJimny
@ExploreJimny 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I've heard some stuff about this however, tbh, I find this hard to see happening if you take care of the paint and wash your car regularly. Maybe not the smartest idea to park it outside 24/7 either, any paint would get dry and start flaking off which I know some people did. Obvs depends, but I haven't seen that issue, but know it has happened for sure ;)

@@ExploreJimny you just described normal conditions for a car and for paint to be reasonably durable. Under those circumstances it should at least last its warranty period.

This car is more like a lone wolf kind of car 😉 Love the car! But I have no problem driving my 7 seater Pathfinder 😁. Works better for my needs, plus i can fit the Christmas tree inside🎄without having to compromise on the child seat ☃️👶🏼 The Jimny is one of the best off-roaders out there! Small (good in the woods and on tight turns, light (doesn't get stuck into mud), small gasoline engine (starts easy in freezing temperature and has enough quick power to the wheels, without breaking the bank). Plus easy to drive in a city (if you have an issue with that). 💯
