No one addresses the cleaning of your GUMS! Please advise on the best way to rid your gums of adhesives.🙊 Follow up: I use a little coconut oil on my gums, and the adhesive comes off in a snap; try it!
I use scentless baby wipes or I had been, like to remove adhesive before I scrubbed them with the brush and put them into cleaning solution but I'll try coconut oil. Thanks 😊
Thank you so much for this advice. I struggle so much with the adhesive removal, not only from my gums but from my denture as well. Can the coconut oil be used on the denture? Any suggestions on removal of adhesive from the denture itself? Also this gentleman mentioned using a toothbrush and it was my understanding that you should not use a brush made for teeth on your denture as it will leave scratches on the denture and the actual glaze on the teeth portion so your only to use denture brushes specifically correct??
So glad I found you!! I just got my dentures yesterday. Just looking around for tips to have the best experience and take very good care of them to get as much time out of them as possible while keeping them as white & beautiful as they are now!!
So happy to hear your appreciation . To allow your dentures to last , clean them daily, soapy water is best, although a toothpaste will also be ok (just not as good as it’s abrasive ) Don’t use electric tooth brushes as they can accelerate wear and tear . If you find then start to become loose, see your local Dental Prosthetist for either tightening of the clasp or potential reline . Lastly, enjoy the journey. Dentures are not perfect, although , they are an amazing alternative than no teeth at all 🦷😊
I've had dentures for many years and eat crusty breads, nuts, chicken (not just the wings), chocolate, and other things you might not suggest. I've only lost 1 tooth in my lifetime of dentures it was from dropping it on a hard floor.
That’s great to hear Jon. These foods are more damaging to people who have dentures with 1 or 2 front teeth on the denture as opposed to a full denture or no front teeth on the denture . Also some patients have deep overbites which in turn has thin plastic to support the tooth due to the overbite . In these cases. Which happens a lot, the strength of the denture is severely compromised . And eating these types of foods can end up in breaking single teeth from time to time . Thanks for watching anyways Jon .
@@thedenturecliniccanberra4968 An overbite should be fixed when you do the impression. You can adjust the top denture to sit back farther so the top and bottom fit just fine. Eliminating the overbite. And for gosh sakes don't make them huge or straight across, which is a dead giveaway that it's false teeth!
there are techniques for eating almost any food with dentures. We have to remember that as a prosthetic, we need to relearn how to eat, as it's not at all the same as before.
@@thedenturecliniccanberra4968 ... Just wanted to say that this was an informative video and your accent is pretty cool too lol. I'm from The State of Missouri in the United States. All we have here is the American Southern Accent in my state, so hearing different ones is interesting to me. Anywayz thanks for the information Doc !!!!
@@thedenturecliniccanberra4968 ... O yeah, is that by any chance a New Zealand accent ? We also have the PIN versus PEN sound with the American southern accent. Southerners call a Pen, a Pin, and also call a Pin, also a Pin lol, and listening to you, it sounds like you would also.
Great info. Im going for my first appt in may to get dentures. Im very excited because ive gone for so long without teeth..its embarrassing trying to talk to anyone or trying to eat without teeth..people are so judgemental and treat you different when you have bad or missing teeth. Its a blow to the self esteem and very depressing .im doing as much research as possible on what to expect while wearing dentures, how to take care of them ,what foods and drinks to avoid, the best fitting for the cost. How to get used to even talking with dentures. One of my biggest fears is to be talking or eating and my dentures flying out of my mouth. Into someones lap or in their dinner plate. Ha ha. I had a friend that got dentures and they were very uncomfortable because they didnt fit correctly he used a Dremel tool to make them fit correctly. .i never knew he wore dentures until he told me because they looked so natural. I lost my teeth because of medications i had been taking for years and they basically turned to chalk. I just wonder if those medicationa will harm my new dentures. I cant afford to ever replace them.
Yes, I was so dissapointed after waiting forever to get them. Had to have like 9 I think it was and still had 6 bottom front teeth, they were already showing signs od decay. But the Dentist I found was for dentures only and he pull the teeth for that. I wasn't aware that he would either fill or pull the teeth he chose to leave I guess for anker teeth for the dentures. He said he would make two and I would have to wait a year for the final set. I knew it was because the gums shrink so went ahead. Finally received the teeth and thought they fit OK on that day. Well they never did fit, I could only wear the top ones and nothing held them tight. $6500.00 later and I just couldn't do anything because the Covid hit and after about a year and a half went in but he said I needed to get my bottom teeth pulled because he didn't think they would last but he had already made up partials for the lower and the teeth that were pulled would have to be added later. First I needed some other dentist to pull them. Needless to say I haven't been able to wear but the top teeth and they absolutely would not stay tight kept coming loose so I could not eat with them in. It's about 30 miles to his office one way so and still that Covington stuff I just couldn't get there and finally made to go but woke up what I thought was a broken hip and could go. He wasn't happy with me and I was thinking after all this time it will be another $1,000.00 or more to maybe finally get them. and. So just going to try to do this relief myself and hope at least the top teeth will stay in. So devastating to have to go like this because it's very ugly and people just hate to talk to you. I don't blame them because I never ever thought I would be so ugly.
@@littlewolfspirit7373 No one should have to wait a year for permanent dentures. When you go for your impression of the top only....once the impression gunk is in your mouth (top only) make your lips like a bunny rabbit. It pulls in the gunk tight to your jawbone and your denture will fit perfect. I've never used anything to keep my in and it's been 9 years now. I paid _ $495.00. I searched 6 months for the right dentist. She was from India and so knowledgeable. People be picky.... it's your money.
I feel the same way this is so hard I hated my teeth when I younger they were ugly so I got braces well my mom wasn't being a mother and stopped taking me I had to pull the wires out they were jamming my mouth BAD aways my grandmother took me to a dentist and they took the braces off my teeth and o got so far my teeth even got stright I was SO happy but they shifted BACK to being ugly so I grew up had a bad accident and Got addicted to pills pain medication well after years of that I finally got into Methadone and I believe through my years of not taking care of my self my teeth I Struggle with Depression and Anxiety and Panic attacks all that horrible stuff and I hear Methadone eats away your bones and teeth ofcourse but on me to Anyways im now on my first month and it's hard especially with no support whats bothering me now is one side on the top is like jamming my gums and I when I move my top lip like I kissed my arm and it feels like there tight like i can break them are atleast that's what it feels like DO you feel this im tired of going into the Dentist im 36yo and just am looking for some kind of support somone going through the same ... Do not use a standard toothbrush on your dentures. Brushes made specifically for dentures are the only brush recommended for any denture as all other toothbrushes will cause scratching in the thin coating covering the teeth on the denture allowing bacteria and plaque to attach much more easily in those areas that have been compromised.
My big advice is avoid cherry tomatoes, coarse ground black pepper and berries cuz those seeds hurt sooooo bad! And nuts do this too. Or just not bite down fully to avoid the sharp pain
It’s a journey that’s forsure . Be patient . Expect some sore gums while they are settling in. Work closely with your clinician to sort through problems . Within time, all will be ok . Good luck!
I’ve had my top denture for a year now and I’ve always cleaned it with a baby toothbrush and Dawn dish soap. I also soak them overnight 3 times a week with polident tablets. Simple, but effective!
Thanks Davy, exciting times , take the time to let them settle in and you’ll eventually grow to love them. It won’t happen in days , so be patient , and it’s all worth it .
I started my journey about 6 weeks ago, i will have a wax fit in 2 weeks, and then the perms a few days later. I am thinking of buying a ultrasonic cleaner with ultra violett light for disinfection. A small unit big enough for my dentures is available at around 50$. I plan to use that once a week for a deep clean, on top of the day to day cleaning routine.
I leave my upper teeth in at night cuz I feel like my face is sliding off my bones without the uppers in. But I always remove the lowers for fear of grinding my jaw at night. I also remove them when I'm concentrated on a project cuz I clench my teeth then without realizing it
I've had full dentures for awhile now and no matter how much adhesive I use they still move when I eat. Another problem I have is that my dentures are getting black with mold and I don't know how to get rid of it. I soak them with denture tablets and brush them with Fresh N Brite and it doesn' t help.
Hi, Generally the back staining can be caused from smoking , red wine, strong curries etc. although not always caused from them. Generally in 99% of cases, a clean once a day with soft tooth brush, soapy water or tooth paste should clean them. Manually cleaning is always best , and the tablets are an additive to manual cleaning. Maybe ask the clinician who made them , or a 2nd opinion, why they are becoming so black ? If you have used adhesive and they don’t work, maybe try denture pads. They are like a double sided sticky pad which can assist in holding them down . Goodluck with the journey. I know it can be hard at the start, but in time they do settle in …
You said you can use a little soap and water to clean the denture. What type of soap? You also said a little toothpaste can be used? I've heard that is too abrasive? Is baking soda ok or is that too abrasive?
Hi, It’s recommended to choose liquid soap as 1st choice . This can be hand soap, dish washing soap etc . Just be sure to rinse well Alternatively , toothpaste can be used. This is by far the most common way. Yes it’s abrasive , only slightly though. So if you brush the denture gently , with NO electric brushes , using toothpaste will do the trick. Some chemist even sell denture toothpaste which has no abrasives , although not many people go to this extra step and their dentures are fine. Hope this helps .
1. Don’t use bleach 2. Don’t clean in boiling water 3. Don’t use a dishwasher 4. Don’t use sharp objects 5. Don’t use powerful abrasive cleaners 6. Don’t neglect them 7. Don’t just eat anything
I have been wearing dentures for several years now and have just learned some things from your video and I thank you for that. A problem that I have is dental adhesive build up on my upper denture that I can seem to remove. Do you have any suggestions that would work for removing this build up? Thank you.
Your welcome. Most brands recommend warm water to remove. If that isn’t doing the job, maybe some kind of eucalyptus oil, as long as it’s safe for oral use. Generally the glue should be able to be removed. Even perhaps try soaking in warm water for 5 mins once a week to give a weekly good clean . Just some suggestions, I hope this may help …
They don't do metal fittings in the uk for some reason...mine is all just i assume arcrylic plastic?? I have to use adhesive because mine won't hold by itself its a pain but i have no upper back teeth apart from 1 and a front side tooth is gone too...
As I have been in the Thermoplastics industry, there is a certain temp that each Plastic cannot withstand. You will be surprised how low it is. Also avoid extreme cold as that can also cause problems!
I got dentures for my top & partial dentures for my bottom I am struggling to wear them. I cannot for the life of me drink or eat with them in its bluddy awful.
It’s more of a long term vision. Immediately after or the 1st few months can be a big adjustment period. LOTS of patience is needed. Although , push through, it’s a learning curve and over time , if everything was done correctly, they will settle down and start to feel semi normal . Hope that helps .
Good luck to you!!! I am about a month in with top denture. I have had them out more than in bc of them digging in...ouch. After dentist visit yesterday it's much better BUT still really bad in one spot ( at least it's only one spot now). Can drink but not eat with them in.
Michelle Jane, I am getting my immediate dentures next week. I read your comment & I wonder how you are doing now. Have you been able to adjust to eating with your dentures on? I know that any changes in my mouth & my tongue keeps feeling it, or playing with it for days. I imagine that adjusting will be the hardest part.
What to do if your dentist takes to much off the back? It was also done straight across not curved in! Any suggestions as it to short and ruff/ thick in the back.
THIS IS MRS. ACE X. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE INTERNET YESTERDAY IT SAID DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DENTURES IN WATER OVER NIGHT. I AM IN THE U.S.A. WHAT AM I TO DO? I WILL BE GETTING DENTURES WHEN I HEAL FROM RECENT ORAL SURGERY. HOPEFULLY I WILL WAIT 6 MONTHS FOR MY BEST INTEREST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
Correct, tooth paste can have abrasives, we have seen over the years, that most denture wearers actually use tooth paste with no negative affects . I would suggest to not over clean with toothpaste, so keep to 1-2 mins , and a soft brush would be most ideal. Thanks for watching Derk
I thought toothpaste was abrasive? Or should I say too abrasive for dentures? I have a full upper and lower partial. I clean mine with soap and a brush before putting them in warm water. I also use poly grip to keep them comfortable and in place. I ultimately plan to go to zirconium implants as soon as I can afford it!
Hi, soapy water is actually best. Exactly for this reason. It’s non abrasive . In saying that, a lot of pts simply don’t want soap on their dentures, and so they use toothpaste. I have seen 1000’s of dentures that have cleaned with toothpaste alone , and they have no obvious abrasion wear and tear. Using an electric toothbrush is a big no no as this will speed up the abrasion multiple x. Hope that helps
NO dont use toothpaste at all!!!! It is too abrasive and will scratch your teeth. Use a solution or cleaner tablets then use a soft toothbrush (baby/toddler toothbrush) and brush them.
Hi , Generally this can be resolved . It would usually mean the teeth at the back bite down together and done leave enough overjet, which is just a term meaning how close teeth are to each other . If I ever have a patient who is cheek biting with their dentures , I can usually trim the teeth at the back slightly , (this must be done on the correct part of the teeth ) and this can resolve the issue . Any dental prosthetist will be able to do this for you . Good luck
I have had full top denture on chrome for 30 years until resently no problems now i have a bad taste comming from the chrome and i dont know why .could you help me age 75 years
Hmmm, this is an odd one. Perhaps something else is going on. Sometimes medications can change our tastebuds. Perhaps check with your doctor as to possible reasons ?
It’s actually one of our clinic rooms . This particular clinic has very high ceilings so that’s where the echo “echo” comes in . Thanks for watching ;)
We have never recommended that vinegar can be used , although We have heard other practitioners say it’s ok. We have always found patients have had great results with with the standard cleaning with soapy water or toothpaste . Thanks for watching
I' be had dentures for awhile now but had to stop wearing them because I' m having trouble with black mold on my dentures. My dentist said because of the new material dentures are made of you don't need to soak them over night anymore. I've tried everything to get rid of the black mold. I use deture tablets and fresh n brite denture creme and my denture toothbrush and I can't get rid of the mold. Is there something I can soak them in to kill the mold?
Sleeping in them is ok. Strongly recommend though, cleaning before bed, that way , the plaque has 8-10 hours less , to do it’s thing in your mouth every day. It all adds up! Thanks for watching :)
@@thedenturecliniccanberra4968 I use a very soft toothbrush before bed. Also after eating. My dentures are old and food sticks to them now so baking soda and a brush helps.
I used to sleep in my dentures and it started causing severe bone loss. Best to give your gums a break also and get some overnight denture cleaning tablets so it kills unwanted bacteria
Yes this is absolutely ok. This is actually how we professionally clean them, along with solutions and drills , but ultrasonics are safe for dentures :)
@@thedenturecliniccanberra4968 how often would you recommend using the ultrasonic cleaner and solution made for them? I just got my dentures and cleaner last week and was thinking of only putting them in it once every week or so and just water and tablets daily
I’ve been using bleach for years and ain’t gonna stop plus it’s just regular dentures no metal and my teeth have been staying white and beautiful just like my mom and dads. Now, I agree with everything else you suggested but I disagree with you saying bleach is not ideal! Oh and I do get the plaque off myself but I’m careful and honestly see why you suggested others get help with it!
I've worn dentures for six years and once or twice a year the upper plate cracks. Just got them repaired three weeks out and while I'm eating a chicken nugget I hear a loud pop and now my upper plate is broken again. Is there a stronger material for dentures?
I just got my new dentures lined with soft acrilic or silocone, not sure which. They taste like glue now and I'm afraid they might be toxic. Should I be concerned about toxicity and damage to my immune system?
Get urself a denture brush. Looks like a golf ball brush and there's usually a rubber pointed tip at the other end that's great for cleaning out those hard to reach space's.
I used to use to brush abrasives lope toothpaste and I even put straight baking soda on them and scrubbed but I know now that was awful of an idea so now I just soak them in bleach through the night and then brush the bleach off with dish soap and a tooth brush but I’m getting ready to order some denture brushes instead finally and a denture cup!
I have my dentures for a month now only my two front teeth (I can't afford a bridge £2,500) I have been using bicarbonate of soda to clean them to remove the glue,
I think Dentist should warn lipless with new dentures about staying foods. Curry is a No No it turns your teeth green or yellow & it’s so hard to remove! Someone gave me a boiled sweet The other day I opened my mouth in the bathroom & was Mortified to find my teeth had turned green it was a lime flavored sweet it also left this glue like substance on the teeth that I had to scrape off .it took days to get them looking anything like normal !!!
I have a top denture that snaps into 3 implant abutments. I never take them out over night. Should I?! My gums have receded and you can see the implants where there was gum. Help!
great tips, just a few others. Is it OK to rinse your mouth out with the dentures on with antibacterial mouth rinse like Savacol, and is it ok to soak the dentures in 3 minute denture cleaning tablets like Polident.
Just remember if you don't get the top part of your teeth out of your gums on top and bottom your dentures will never fit right. My son has diabetes all his teeth broke off. My denist sent him to a real good dentist he had surgery in a hospital setting. That was day before Thanksgiving of 2023. He's going Friday March 22 this Friday to get his dentures. That's a good 2months for his gums to heal. Than 2 months for the dentures. Is 4th appointment when he get his dentures this Friday the 22nd of March.
Is Dettol hand wash good for cleaning it? Asking for a relative. She has been told to use the given tablet once a month for cleaning. Am asking this again as it is urgent to guide my relative.
Hi, I would think it would be ok, although be sure to clean off all the detergent very well , give multiple rinses . Preferably , an organic hand soap would be better , although a lot of our patients have used many brands of soap over the years . All do a similar job. Just be sure to wash them very well after . Thanks for watching
Soapy water is best, although lots of people refuse to use soap , in which case tooth paste is ok. Just a soft head tooth brush though, and never an electric toothbrush . Or ideally, find denture tooth paste which has no abrasives , although this will cost a little more . Thanks for watching 🦷
How can one get dentures when you can no longer afford them. I'm dying here. Can not eat and w/o my dentures my mouth over closes so that I can't bite. Any advice?
you forgot tip number 8.... if they fall out when you giving a speech, refuse to admit they are yours, even run from the scene, leave the zimmer frame!!
Re the nuts.. it sounded as if he were talking about what I used to do as a kid.. crack open the nut (in the shell) with my teeth.. quite possible with some nuts--almonds, English walnuts, pecans, etc. Shelled nuts shouldn't be a big problem. I'd also avoid crunching ice, for example. As for chicken.. who crunches the bones anyway? Chicken meat should be no problem whatever.
Hi, the 1st week stick to soft foods, then gradually step up to things a bit harder. You will be able to judge what feels good and what hurts so take your time and don't push yourself. Hope that helps.
I bought a few packets of instant mashed potatoes and I can mix almost everything into them. I cut/ diced up a burger, bratwurst, can of corned beef and hash, can of peas, etc. You are not limited to applesauce and scrambled eggs. Of course , I really cut up the meat( I like/need) proteins, and mix it with mashed potato. Really pleased. I am day 6 with 9 teeth pulled(upper) and same day dentures. I can't wait until they snap in, approximately 6-8 months.
@@cathyjarvis7804 thanks so much for that. I’m only only 1 day post op on the uppers & next week the lower. I’m so hungry and I need protein as well. Plus I’m starving. Why would you wait? You could have gotten IMMEDIATE DENTURES, right after (the day of) your extractions... So, I would call your dentist now. Possibly they could still make you an IMMEDIATE DENTURE now, if not- I think that they say that the healing process is usually 4 to 6 myths. But I had 17 teeth extracted on April 27, 2021 & received my IMMEDIATES right after also. I love that I have now, a beautiful smile. But my problem is now, learning to SPEAK again CORRECTLY & TRYING to learn HOW to EAT! With these IMMEDIATE DENTURES (they are BIGGER then usually - I'm told), but I CANNOT EAT or Really even put ANYTHING in my mouth without gagging! But I guess & have been told, that it's all a learning experience, ssssoooo. I do wish you the best of luck. And if you have any questions, I'm glad to POSSIBLY HELP! (I'm still new to all of this) but believe me... I could probably TEACH a Class Now🙄😁‼️
I also got immediate dentures which helped me with appearances, and practicing some eating techniques, but so frustrating that I ended up eating only without the teeth. that being said, the permanent dentures they don't do until gums are fully settled, which takes at least 6 months. my dentist refused to do permanents until 6 months after extraction.
I order my partial dentures three weeks before removing my teeth and when I went to get my teeth remove my partial denture was ready .. and had it put on 10 minutes after having my real teeth removed
I had same problem sorry but it took me over a year. Still hard to eat. I bought that soft liner denta something it helps for cushion I can't stand the putty they sell at the store.
I would think it would better to take it out and rinse with the wash , due to the chemicals and some even have alcohol in the mouth washes . Hope that helps :)
its amazing people need to be told these common sense things. I got new dentures less than a week ago and I completely hate them. trying to get used to this clumsy foreign discombobulating thing clamped down and around both gum lines littered with stitches makes it near impossible. chewing anything is so bizarre and depressing as soon as i try to chew...the bottom teeth slip away from gum line and clank around my mouth until I can find the food with my swollen red hyper sentive tongue then kick that to roof of my mouth and attempt to just swallow whats left...whole. im waiting on I guess the "real" set to made. so six months with these temporizes. the bottom set will be snap in teeth and the top fitted denture I can take out. will these final set of teeth not feel so clumsy and awkward? will the bottom implants be better? ii cant see myself ever eating with these temporary same day dentures probably gonna have to put everything I eat into a blender for rest of my life.
yeah I just dont wear the temporary ones at all and haven't. the implants arrive end of this month. hopefully I haven't messed up my gums by not wearing the tempories@@neadster469
We have always that’s never a necessary step, although there will always be different opinions between different practitioners . Thanks for watching and supporting.
#7 is depressing. I'm just 50 this past December. I need a full upper and partial lower and I have to give up al these foods? That really sucks. Everyone talks abo0ut how much better it is with dentures than teeth that are screwed up, but right now the teeth I have left (10) that need to be extracted can still bite pretty much anything. I'm being a little cautious because my front teeth are bad and I've had a few fall out, but even compromised I can still eat things like subs. So dentures are just going to make me look better, not function better.
I am 55, went through a month of healing after 27 teeth extracted. They were falling out, moving, had holes in them, pretty nasty. Had bone grafts done which required a mouth full of stitches. After 30 days my dentist made my impressions and first set of dentures. Yes, this set is for looks and getting used to wearing them while your gums shrink down, then you get your permanent set which should work better. I'm still 4.5 months out from my permanent set. Eating isn't fun with these. I've lost 20 pounds not eating like i did before. But since my mouth is healed i eat most things without the teeth just fine. When there is a will (for a hamburger!) there is a way!
@@UnderTheBigOak I really wish I had listened to everyone about dental care, or at the very least taken care of this two years ago when all I needed were fillings and a root canal. Fillings are no fun, but they beat this every day of the week. I wouldn't even so much mind getting it done if it weren't for the fact that I know it's going to be one of the worst days of my life. I've just never had the luck of not feeling anything at any dentist.
