Fantastic tips! I'm just starting to draw birds and gain confidence, but I agree that tracing is a great way to get to know the bird anatomy. I'll have to get the Laws Guide to Drawing Birds as I have his Nature Journal guide and have been part of Jack Laws' nature journal club for 3 years! I love your cardinals -- they are one of my top favorite birds! Thanks for sharing!

So fun watching you create these pages and I love your idea of sketching a local bird each month! I got the Laws Guide last spring for my birthday and studied it, then sketched some birds. It was so ineresting and helpful working from that book.
Thanks for the great suggestions. Like the bird a month study idea as well as the get a drawing reference book. Also appreciate the reminder that copying is a legitimate art practice to hone skills.

This was very helpful, and your cardinals look so beautiful! I love the variety of colors in the male's spiky crest feathers, and your idea of drawing one bird per month sounds like a great practice (I have a lot of so-so photos of birds that I took myself when I had a zoom lens film camera!). Bonjour, Oui ces conseils sont très bien pour moi. Je faisais de la peinture à l'huile depuis très longtemps mais je dois prendre maintenant l'aquarelle pour ne pas utiliser les solvants... Ce n'est pas très facile. Bonne journée de France.
Merci d'avoir regardé ! J'ai peint avec de l'acrylique et je voulais peindre plus souvent, alors j'utilise des aquarelles. Ils sont très différents mais satisfaisants. J'espère que votre peinture se passera très bien☺️

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! I added the link for the pen rest, it’s actually a chopstick holder and they only come in sets of 6 online. I found mine sold individually at a Japanese stationary store…hope that helps!
