Hey, i would, from my personal experience over the last three years, expand buying/trading used stuff. I started to go through my collection of old projects/boxes once or twice a year and try to be honest to myself and check if there's a real chance i'm gonna do these. Then i picked up everything where i said no (Harlequin-Force, Genestealers from DeathwatchOverkill, another Prospero-Box, a ImperialGuard force...) and sold all of them. On one side, i got a good price for most of it (most of it was bought on sales or with a big discount), i reduced my subconscious stress to work on these and got some money to invest in new (used) minis. I repeat this process from time to time and now i still have a big backlog, but 1) everything in there has a higher chance to be done 2) i'm again more familiar with what i have and 3) have a better overview what kitbash-projects could be possible. I even went the extramile and inventarised most of it, so in free minutes i can glance at my list and think about what i want to do next. This is a inward-focusing spiral that helped me a lot to continue and even finish some old projects and after that, i was able to reward myself with a fance new mini for example. Downside; i went a lot about classifieds and bought a few lots in the last years. All where a good bargain and i kept only a small percentage of it and sold the rest (got myself some of the DarkVengeance and BlackReach stuff this way for nearly 0$), but in the end i still got a few hundred new minis last year :D

One Page Rules. Beats spending a small fortune each year on the endless codex, supplement and campaign book releases. Not to mention not having to wade through all the white dwarf rules, errata, faqs and balance updates. Play with whatever models you have.

Deadzone Warpath Maelstrom's Edge Star Breach Rogue Stars Zona Alfa Grimdark Future Grimdark Future: Firefight These are all quite good alternatives to 40k if you don't want to get buried by the cost of extra books. And many of them are miniature agnostic so you can use cheaper alternatives like Reaper, Wargames Atlantic, Khurasan Miniatures, and many many others!

@@BenjisHobbies There are also a lot of fantasy options. Oathmark is more of the old Warhammer Fantasy with the rank and flank parts for those who miss it. Dragon Rampant is wonderful for something closer to AoS for what you use, but it also has capabilities that could work for classic fantasy if you want it while being exceedingly versatile Warlords of Erehwon is another good one. You could even go smaller force sizes with Frostgrave.

I recently returned to the hobby after leaving just before 4th edition 40K. FOMO has no power over me, I've missed nearly 20 years. I just browse eBay or 3D printing sites for cool looking models I can mod/kitbash and paint. Still got my Dark Eldar and Tau so on the very rare occasion a buddy of mine can play a game with me we do 3rd Edition 40K because that's what we know.

I've definetely paused my purchasing and you know what? I've been having a blast with my Blood bowl and Blackstone Fortress box sets. Amost finished and soon I will have two new games to play! Plus, they're games that don't need like 3 rule books just to play and friends can easily pick it up to join. Going forward I don't think I will purchase anything from GW that doesn't include everything I need in the box.
@BenjisHobbies
@BenjisHobbies 2 года назад
Absolutely this! I’ve got so many boxes that I KNOW I’d have fun with if I got round to painting it, but the constant tide of new stuff always makes it feel like you have to move on to the next thing. Going through my pile made me realise I had so much stuff I’m excited to paint, I’d just forgotten about it!
@remusventanus5341

@@BenjisHobbies Exactly! Between Blood Bowl, Blackstone Fortress, and Kill Team, I'm set with three games that will last me quite a while until I see something that really impresses me. I will stick to these box set games for now. 40k is too bloated for my liking in its current form, and between the (unnecessary) price increase and the constant fomo, I just don't want to support their bad behavior. Would love to see you drop some videos appreciating stuff that you already have! I'm sure its easy to get sucked into the cycle being a youtuber trying to cover whats new and hot, but you could certainly garner some love reminding people to enjoy (and probably finish) stuff they've already paid for. I watched Ninjon's latest video this morning covering his pile of shame, and while I absolutely love the guy it made me very thankful that I don't have boxes and boxes of untouched stuff. Lmao

Good ideas man - something I've been trying to do for the last few months is "be honest about what and how you play". If you only play skirmish games, why be distracted by the big shiny boxes with more models than you'll ever need? If you play the big army games, why buy models from a new faction when you haven't finished your old army yet? I am definitely guilty of it and I've found that change in mindset helpful!
@BenjisHobbies
@BenjisHobbies 2 года назад
Exactly this! I’m way more selective over what I buy now. Unless I’m going to start painting it in the next week or so I hold off - in the vast majority of cases it’ll still be available then anyway!

Play Kill Team and don't play 40k. Fielding 10-14 models is a lot more attractive. Also buying Patrol boxes for Kill team is great after selling the vehicles in boxes. Got Plague Marine box for 5 dollars w/ Plague Champion from plaguefester warband after selling the vehicles. Got 21 new orks from Combat Patrol box after selling dredd, copters, bossnob for 3 dollars, box was also 25% off. Join all the warhammer FB groups in your local area, got Tau start collecting box on spru for 20 bucks. Warhammer can be reasonable if you put in a little work.

1 - Don't buy Games Workshop. 2 - Get into Star Wars Legion 3 - Bolt Action 4 - Kings of War. All a lot better games than 40k or AOS (I'm a huge AOS fan). I've got a metric shit ton of minis that need painting and i'll post up photos on the faceache site shortly. I'm also, like many others, a collector so the backlog builds up. But, DON'T BE ASHAMED lol. I use an Ender Pro 2 3d printer which has saved me on terrain, Star Wars Legion vehicles and terrain, and tanks and buildings for Bolt Action. However, it's storage space. Money saving tips: Use Really Useful Boxes. Buy magnets and store minis that way instead of expensive Feldherr or KR Multicase cases and foam. But foam from Boyes or another furniture store, it may not look the dogs danglies, but it does the bloody job :)

They're both dirt cheap to get into, fun to build, paint and play, and have a great community to support them. As for other suggestions, how about repainting your existing minis to give them a fresh lease of life. As your painting skills improve there are always minis you have that could be looked at again.

@@pinoarias8601 I wouldn't recommend one of the starter sets as they're really misnamed. That's a full army in a box and not really a starter at all. Grab one of the two player starter sets (Band of Brothers or Island Assault) or a box of Infantry for whichever nation you prefer. The infantry boxes have 30+ models for dirt cheap, more than enough for 2-5 squads, a HQ and a couple of 2 man teams. The starter armies are really "here's step 2, all in one box".

Step 3: Trim bodies and legs from sprue, and glue bodies to legs. Step 4: Glue assembled bodies and legs to bases. Step 5: Trim gun arms from sprue, and glue to bodies. Can confirm that second hand miniatures stores are a great source of models. I got somewhere in the ballpark of 1000 pts of Dark Angels from a site called Mindtaker Miniatures, for a huge discount. They've always got more models coming in, and some often can be had for a steal (especially if you're willing to put some work in repairing them or replacing missing parts). Indeed, I often need to stop myself from buying from them all the time, as I would definitely purchase miniatures faster than I can paint them.

The first rule of the Hobby, is "Have fun." The second rule is "Your hobby, your way." Don't let any company tell you how to play with your own toys. Meh!! Printing your own mini's, not cheaper. There are a bunch of costs which people invariably fail to account for only ever really costing the STL purchase. Reigning in your spending is good but better to plan your next spend because you have the anticipation and a reason not to buy other stuff. For me GW Aeldari is the target. I have a plethora of alternate games, a lot of which I supplemented the 2nds. I have bought less that way because the conventions were closed. The price increases are bullsh**. If you look at GW’s Semi-annual earning reports. You can see that they’re roughly still paying the same for their ability to produce and that’s increased maybe 1-2%. Increasing their prices 5%, which has also been increasing over several years. Their just price gouging at this point. Feel like they’re just trying to see how much of a profit they can make off people or how much people are really willing to pay. Just ridiculous. Did see a nice video breaking down their earning reports tho. Which was nice ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xmOX0Y-AjWc.html

That’s completely ignoring the increasing price of raw materials, Brexit, increased transport cost, global freight prices, SIGNIFICANTLY increasing power costs, giving their staff pay increases, increased minimum wage in the U.K. starting from April… but of course it’s all ‘bullshit’ because another RU-vidr said it was 🙄

Save money by not paying the 5-10% increase. Instead spend thousands of dollars / euros and buy a printer?!!

A printer isn’t thousands. The cheapest one I’ve linked is currently £140. I even mention in the video that the one I’m using is £240 and probably comes in cheaper than buying a full Warhammer army.

What a printer costs as much as a recently released GW boxset….

@@BenjisHobbies Dont get me wrong I agree with all your point in the video. The Printer one just rubs me wrong. In my book maintenance and all the costs come along dont cut it. I strongly encourade 2nd hand stuff.

I get 3d printing isn't for everyone and each to their own but why does everyone jump straight to thousands its no where near that . A set up with eveything you need including a decent mono screen printer and a wash/ station will cost 300 tops

I will have spent less with 3D printing this year than I spent on GW last year....and that's with half of it being upfront cost of the print station. Now that it's set up the savings are immense. Three Plagueburst Crawlers for $150, how about 3 Maggot Mortars for under $30. While 3D printing isn't for everyone due to space, safety caution, my biggest issue Resiliency, etc..., when it comes to price, printing wins in the long run.

Honestly, aside from 1 & 2 these all could easily become ways to spend more money ... I guess technically you'll be spending less on Warhammer tho, so technicallycorrect.gif
