►In this video, Neil Tappin is joined by PGA Pro and RU-vidr Alex Elliott. They discuss the 7 ways to play better golf without changing your swing. These are all the things you can do that will make a big difference out on the course and in practice. You needn't make any major technical swing changes to play better, instead a smarter all-round approach could help improve your handicap far quicker. Try putting some of Alex's ideas into play and you should notice an improvement!

One of the things I appreciate about the videos on this channel is that most advice is not swing related. It is about preparation and mental attitude. In teaching my brother to play, I constantly remind him--as much for myself as him--that the appearance of your shot doesn't matter if it fits your game and expectations. My brother is 6'3". He hits a beautiful high draw naturally, and he generates distance because of his height. For him, gravity does the work. Meanwhile, I'm 5'7". I hit a fade, and I play low and fast to maximize roll and thereby distance. It is almost like a constant punch shot with longer clubs. It isn't always pretty, but it works. There is not one right way to do things in golf, and that is why it is such a fascinating game!

Conservative target, aggressive shot....find that helps...when I apply it. The alignment tip is critical. Been working with this with my coach and using the single stick down the line is exactly what he’s getting me to do in my practice. 👍🏼

Fully agree with the No 1 tip. I use it every shot including putts. Pick a spot 2m ahead and line up on that, takes no time at all and then you don’t need to think about that again.

It sounds simplistic, but not hitting shots I don't have has helped me the most. Last season it occurred to me (after approximately 36 years of golf) .... If I can reliably hit my 3 wood 240 yards in play, why am I hitting driver 280 yards into the woods? Hitting shots you can trust makes the game a lot more fun.

Add: Be honest with yourself about your distance. How many guys always end up short because they think they hit it 15 yards longer than they do. If you hit a 6i 170 yds, play it that way, don't constantly be trying to muscle an extra 15-20 yards from the wrong club for the shot.

I vaguely remember reading about a large U.S. university doing a study with their golf team. Their team would play regularly at their local course and they recorded the team scores over a significant period of time. Then, they remove the flags from each of the greens so none of the players knew where the hole was located. Of course, they recorded all of the scores and found that overall, their golfers scored better with the pins removed.

This came from a club fitter as I was buying a new Driver. I have a natural draw that can often turn into a hook, but still 20% of my drives can fade. This two way miss made my tee shots an exercise in aiming slightly right and praying it doesn't fade or Hook far into the next fairway on either side. The fitter said to put a draw adjustment on the club and fully play aiming to the right edge. Now I have a very high chance at a draw. The heavy hooks just get into the left rough and the longest slight draws start down the right edge and work into the right side of the fairway. It would never occur to me that a natural draw swings needs more draw to become a more playable swing, but playing to just one miss to the left and keeping the aim to the right edge of any trouble on the right is very enjoyable. I'm feeling a big confidence boost and adding yardage from the new feeling of knowing I really have a high percentage of knowing the line of how far right I hit it and am closing that dispersion even more with added experience with it.

@YikesBikes Well done Bud! Just got my new irons today, Wilson D7 1/2 longer and 2 deg upright, as budget didn't stretch to one length. I was just at the range and it's incredible the difference as they're straighter, but when I get better I will definitely look at one length. Love the new d7 I was previously playing second hand forged titlest blades 🙃

For me golf is all about the misses. I play at a very quiet course... I regularly throw 9 balls around the green and monitor the number of times I get up and down. Good fun and can build the pressure... and positive swing thoughts are a must. I’ve watched playing partners say out loud before a tee shot “just don’t go...) I always want the more positive “ hit it...there!” And as the brilliant John Clarke said, “at the top of your backswing, if you can keep the swing thoughts to less than 100...”

The easy way of aligning your tee shots is to use a line on the ball as you would in putting. Just aim the ball where you want to go.

Point 1 only applies if you putt better than your bunker play. I'd probably have a long put and 4 put. Or I could take the bunker one out 2 put max. Therefore go for the bunker?

no 1 through 3 pre-shot routine- that includes grip and alignment and posture. 10 years on you can thank me. It is without doubt the biggest thing a pro does versus 98% of amateurs. 4 through 7 is always a realistic assessment of risk and the ability to pull of the shot. The threshold of 8 out of 10 is pretty reasonable I would say

@@carterwhite6777 so this is mine - I have built all the static pre shot elements into it ( to be fair I was taught to do this) I have a mechanism to grip the club exactly the same way every time ( while I am looking behind the ball selecting the target and alignment just like you), alignment set, posture check and relax/breathe, no practice swing just a waggle and go. Don't want to waste any energy :-) Can chat about the benefits and downfalls of a practice swing f you want to compare

I’m more confident & have better results getting up & down from the bunkers than chipping around the green. I’m really good at it so I attack most holes regardless of the bunkers around the green as I know I would probably get par or worse bogey. It doesn’t make sense at all.

The #1 key point in my opinion to play better golf without changing your swing : Leave your ego at home. Don't play to impress your friends but to keep your ball safe and to have fun = your best practice shots are not your standard course shots.

@UCIBtFPyHRoO73a2kbqUsUiA Thanks appreciate that 😊 You are welcome to your opinion, don't get me wrong but come on, not going to watch because he is slightly off? "Trained journalists" as you say, have experience behind them yes but they are using techniques that keep you engaged. Sure it keeps people like you interested but they are not insightful as the pros, who are clearly not trained in conveying easy, clickbaity things to people. There is gold in people like this who have the expertise but cannot dust it in sprinkles for just anyone to digest. I hope you have more patience on the course and in life xx

I would bet that every player thinks he or she is lining up for a drive correctly. Nobody lines up off line on purpose. Many do not know how to line up or what line is needed. Have your mate stand behind you and observe your alignment, it is that simple. Tell him where you want to line up to and have him tell you to move until you are lined up correctly. Hit a drive and see where it goes. My wife is a beginner so I help her line up a lot. She is figuring out how and where to line up, soon she can do her own lining up. I am a slicer so I always line up to the left side of the fairway.

01:02 "no-flag golf" stupid, don't shoot for flags because you might miss the green and land into trouble. that's kinda like telling people to block Golf Monthly videos because they are so stupid your head might explode from watching any one of them. 03:30 literally an entire minute to ask the question of when obstructed whether it is better to go for the green or to chip out on the fairway 07:30 practicing short approach shots inside 100 yards: deliberately missing the green. 13:07 ways to build a strategy to play each hole "in particular the difficult holes" something about playing holes the same way every time, bringing-in trouble, making the same mistakes etc I guess their point is that if you hit the same club on every shot, you're going to make the same mistakes on every shot... so after finishing the hole, stand on the green and rethink your plan 15:23 "how would you rate this flag in terms of difficulty on a scale from 1 to 3?" Hint: if it's a 3, "red-light", then don't go for the flag. Genius! Shame they didn't mention this before the one at 01:00 but oh well 17:37 consistent alignment-routine from the tee Ok folks there you have it, one paragraph, 1 minute to read, done.
