Relationships can be the most beautiful and nurturing experience. However, in toxic relationships, these traumas can deep wound us. Even though we might not be conscious of them, they can show up in subtle ways that create challenges for our future relationship, or even for ourselves. Relationship traumas can create stress that worsen over time, making it more and more difficult for us. They can leave us feeling powerless, and confused, as to why certain things trigger or affect us so much. Let's explore how unhealed relationship trauma can show up in our lives.
The goal of this video is to build awareness on the topic of relationship trauma and abuse. If you feel someone could benefit from these videos, do consider sharing!

These are all me. If you don’t mind, here’s my story. I was after 7th grade and I’m the summer when I broke up btw. He had been dating for 6 months. My ex would tell people that I didn’t like physical touch because of past trauma (which is true) but then wouldn’t respect my personal space themselves. They would also tell me I needed to eat more when I did certain things like putting my hands on my hips (I have Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, so I can’t help that I’m skinny). They would also tell me I was less attractive when I wore certain clothes or did my makeup a certain way. This also only happened when we started dating. They would also constantly tell me that they loved me and asked if I would leave them like their other past relationships. I do react to loud noises or people tapping me on the shoulder. Im not saying I was perfect in the relationship either, however. Whenever I got mad at them, I wouldn’t talk to them for weeks. I also didn’t trust them fully. So yea, that’s my story. It’s been a very long time since the breakup and I’m still trying to heal from it.

As someone who have been through a traumatic breakup, I can say that's is extremely overwhelming how trauma from years ago can affect at a high extent your current relationships, is something I wouldn't wish to anyone and, if you're going through something similar, I hope you can get over it soon.

Number 7 is something that I'm dealing with.. been in a toxic friendship the last 7 months and Im still afraid of facing them. I recently figured out the toxicity and trynna work my courage to confront the person and kick them out of my life. The songs that we had, different places and stuff bring me anxiety now, short breath or making me on edge. I wanna enjoy those things again without these negative feelings. Without thinking of the person.

I know it sucks, specially when the things we shared remind us of them and every thing shatters inside us but you are so brave to confront it and I wish God gives you hope and courage to move forward and try sharing it with someone you have always deeply loved and feel like really close to. I know sharing your story is really hard to the point where it feels very scary but believe me, once you have shared it with that person, many painful things start to heal more. I hope you feel better soon...💞😊

Don't confront them... Go 'no contact'.... Quietly... So they don't know it's happening... Or you will find yourself in their crosshairs... Abusers get a kick out of the results of their abusive behavior...like it's a drug... If you tell them you are leaving... They will pursue you...

I'm sorry your going through that, but just know what your going through was not your fault, and your not the only one going through this. Many people including I are going through a struggle, because people want to hurt us to make themselves feel better. Just know you deserve better and are no one's punching bag. If they want to feel better they should get some professional, they don't deserve our help. I hope and wish you luck on your journey to happiness my friend. Stick with the people that not only love you, but show it as well. Remember action speak louder then words. :)

As much as I do agree with everything everyone in the comments said about going no contact, as someone who's experienced that from the other side of things, I do think there's a right and a wrong way to do that that doesn't heap unnecessary trauma onto someone who you still care for. That's why these things are tricky to begin with--they hurt you big time, and you can't have them in your life anymore, but you do still care. So, my advice would be to write a letter explaining it to them without using blaming language. How you do that is by centering your feelings instead of their actions--i.e., instead of "I have been isolated because you're jealous of my friends," try "I've noticed that I've been hanging out with other people less and less. it feels like I can't strike that balance anymore, and that isn't good or healthy for either of us." For me personally, I know leaving room for them to come back in when they were ready was important to me, too. That's something I owed to myself, not them, because I knew if I didn't I'd spend months wondering if there was something more I could've done. The thing there is just that you need to be REALLY specific, and lay down boundaries and timeframes. But, I know that step ain't for everyone.

What bothers me about relationships is not only how the relationship will go, but also the future of the relationship. There's a REALLY small chance the relationship will go on to the point on where you're a father or a mother with children. And there's a big chance that situations and problems, along with less trust and more stress can lead to a break up.
@OffGridInvestor
@OffGridInvestor 2 года назад
As a guy who wants kids, THAT IS THE THING. I couldn't be bothered with YEARS of this for EACH relationship to end and essentially amount to ZERO after all that wasted time. After SIGNIFICANT research, I come to understand why India has arranged marriages and has the worlds second biggest population. I'm kinda doing a series on this. It's come to my understanding that relationships just built on LOVE but not practicality are crap, and the only way they've worked on the past is because of COMPATIBLE PERSONALITIES/ mindsets. Also I believe life was simpler and people were FAR more willing to work together and less selfish and bought up with manners and consideration for others. Whereas today, it's just WANT WANT WANT and selfish behaviour.
@sm9305able

@@OffGridInvestor Many things go into the typical Indian match making business, like your father's social status, your beauty and age(for a girl), your salary (for a guy) how wealth of both the families are taken into account. And not to forget both should be from CASTE speak same language etc.. These are the parameters for compatibility here.. After marriage, working is optional for women here, which means no financial freedom.After motherhood, working is prohibited, she is meant to only give birth and look after her husband family. Arranged marriages in India are more toxic than you can ever imagine. Sometimes the girl's consent is neglected when it comes to marriage..
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 2 года назад
@@OffGridInvestor No, you DO need more than Love to make a relationship work... There HAS to be some kind of teamwork arrangement, respect for each other, and responsible cooperation ongoing to build a couple into a relationship... That's true. AND likewise, the whole "what about me" and "I want" movements through the "microwave-bitch" population is exactly what's completely destructive to chances for a healthy relationship coming together for a majority of people... At the same time, if you don't have the patience to invest the WORK over YEARS to build that relationship, there's no amount of advantage that's going to help you. It's also going to take YEARS of building that relationship in a healthy way IF or When you ever achieve children... AND those children are GOING to waste your money, eat and waste your food, run amok through your life and house, push your buttons, cross your boundaries, disappoint your every expectation, and break your heart more than occasionally... AND then they'll grow up and build lives of their own that don't include you. THAT'S WHAT CHILDREN DO... AND it's the normal, natural, and proper way of things. If you can't handle all that, then you're not even fit to have children. If you're not capable of "being bothered" to invest the years of relationship and trust building with a single other person PURELY to make a couple and potentially a life together, then you're also not fit to bother with as a partner... Because it very well CAN end up to "nothing" for all those years and work invested... ...AND tomorrow, you could walk down the side of the street and for a simple little mistake by someone else, a fast-moving chevy make a mess out of you... done forever... pfft... That's just life. Stop being a coward. Trust takes years to build, seconds to break, and FOREVER to rebuild. YOU have to be stronger than that. ;o)

After a lot of experience in life, I thought I was in good relationships because I didn’t know what a good relationship was truly supposed to be. I was comparing to other people who, in hind sight, weren’t in good relationships either. And then it happened. I stopped looking and stopped worrying and got to the point where I didn’t have time for BS but handled it politely. And eventually, the right guy stayed around. He stayed and cared, even when we disagreed. Even when I said I wasn’t ready for something. So here is what I would say. Get a good guy, the same way you find a best friend. A lot of it just happens naturally. You just click and you just want to be around each other for no other reason than you’re very content with each other. Don’t accept a relationship where you feel you’re doing more than you should just to keep it going. A guy that truly feels for you, he won’t make you feel that way. You’ll feel at peace. And you just know he’s there for you

Oh, god… I almost cried when I watched it. I relate to this so hard. Literally all seven ways. I honestly had a rough personal time with a partner, and it led me to being so anxious I was shaking and crying. It was just a misunderstanding and she wasn’t really fazed by it, we just apologized and forgot about that particular moment, but I still felt bad and felt very shameful for myself, even though I did nothing wrong. Then I found out it could be linked with previous relationships I’ve had and friendships that always vanished after *one* thing I did wrong. Just one thing… And I think this may have proved it. Thanks Psych2go

I'm the same way with my boyfriend, my family, and group of friends. They don't flip out over the smallest things and always have to reassure me when I do something wrong. I always over-apologize, and they thankfully are very understanding and patient with me. Small things over which my ex would lock me in our bedroom downstairs, starve me, among a number of other things, everyone around me takes with a grain of salt and it's no big problem. It took me a whole year and a half to stop breaking down. I still apologize a ton almost 5 years after I escaped from that situation. I'm slowly but surely getting better, though. My mom and friends are saying the old me is beginning to come back. My boyfriend is in the military and is the biggest sweetheart and most patient person I've ever met. I hope you both on this thread heal from the past. There's light at the end of the tunnel. You are loved. You are worthy of love. It takes time to heal, but you are also worth that time. Sorry to hear about your loss. I've been in the very same situation, lately. The friend in question started distancing himself after finding a partner. In about one year our relationship devolved from best friends to acquaintances all the way back to strangers. I had to cut ties with him because it was hurting me so much and I was forced to rethink my definition of friendship. It's a dark place. However, just when I thought I would be all alone another door opened up. Another friend - in fact even older than the one I lost - took an interest in my case and helped me sort through this mess. Keep your chin up, man. The worst part is behind you and it's about to go uphill again.

Thank you for this. People talk alot about getting over a toxic relationship, right? You're supposed to run to your best friend. But what do you do when you finally realize your best friend is toxic? And even after you leave it still haunts you. You don't look at your songs the same, your social media posts, you feel isolated, keep beating yourself up, disassociation, even after months have gone by. It just sucks. But remember it's only temporary and you gotta take it one day at a time. I wanna just focus on me and my future from now on

Holy shit you literally just described my scenario. Within 6 months I realized not only was my relationship with my still most recent ex boyfriend was extremely toxic, but also that my best friend of nearly 10 years was possibly even more toxic still. So many of these resonated with me heavily and I feel like part of it was because I got into my current (nearly 3 years, known each other closer to 6) relationship relatively quickly after finally breaking up with him completely. But I can't help but feel like losing who I thought was my strongest support also did some major damage that is still hanging over my head.

Like I couldn't sleep without waking up in sweat and feeling broken as soon as I even saw her in my dreams. I'm in a relationship right now. A very happy and healthy relationship. And it's been 7-8 years for us. We were childhood friends, we grew up together - literally and figuratively. However, now we are in a LDR. Just yesterday we had a grave conversation about the future of our relationship. Some issues wouldn't let us to get married in the future. And reality hit me yesterday, and imagining him with someone else made me go insane. I cried a lot, slept myself to sleep by crying. My eyes are swollen now. We both are so much in love, yet our future is not in our hands. This breaks me so much. I don't know what to do, I've invested so much of my time, energy, efforts and feelings. The thought of 'us' not working out itself makes me feel my world is falling apart.

I understand how you feel by having the future you had laid out for you completely rocked. I'm in something sort of similar - I've been with my partner for the same length of time, but our future looks more uncertain each day. I thought that we'd be together forever, but there are so many things telling me that our future isn't together. I've cried plenty over the past few months, and I'm scared to face the future alone. I'm starting therapy next week to address the fear of being alone and some other issues. Please know that you're not alone - sending hugs to you.

Long distance relationships ALMOST NEVER go well for a long time. You need to be together IN PERSON which means ONE OF YOU might need to compromise. 7-8 years is longer than some marriages. I lived in a toxic relationship and suffered just like that for several months. Even though I wasn't in the relationship anymore, I still felt fear, sadness and stress, as if my brain didn't understand that it's all over. It was months and months of anxiety, guilt, shame and fear. Nowadays, I am an extremely complicated person to deal with a possible romantic partner. According to him whatever happened isn't a big deal... but I can't trust people anymore, thanks to this recent relationship. I have sudden urges to ruin things for him, the way he had done with mine. This isn't like me. But, after all, that has happened, I am the one questioning everything. I am the one who doesn't want to interact with anyone anymore. I am the one with pent-up regrets, even though I am not in the wrong. He has full faith that I'll come back to him. I don't have anyone to talk to. Unlike him, I am a hardcore introvert.

Soon after j discover that the exact day she dumped me she got together with her friend that "i shouldnt worry about". I knew he was the reason for our problems all along but she just was too coward to admit that. That happened 6 months ago and i still have trust issues and feel shame for what happened. I think I made the mistake of getting into another relationship before I got to heal and it really just made everything so much worse. That added a second trauma on top of the first trauma and now I just feel terrible. It's been years and I just can't do anything, I'm paralyzed and I'm at a point where I don't care anymore what happens to me. There's just no way I'll ever be able to trust someone enough to be able to love again. I've been having trouble trusting my closest friends and family and I get mad super easily and drive people away. I don't even trust myself because the trust I felt was so strong shattered into pieces. If I was so far off while being so confident, how can I trust my own judgement now? I don't even feel myself, reality seems like a concept I cannot grasp. I'm having trouble thinking straight, I lose myself in the fog that resides in my head. I've lost interest in basically everyone and everything. I've been jobless for 2 years now and I'm about to go bankrupt cause I can't get a hold of myself and do what I need to do. I just wanted things to work so badly that I turned a blind eye on so many things and it backfired hard. I'm so far from the person I used to be, I don't even know what I am. Being alone makes me feel better and worse at the same time but I also cannot stand being around other people because I've grown to hate the presence of other human beings... If the person I trusted the most at one point played me like a fiddle, what will those who I don't even know do? What I once deeply desired is now something I try to avoid at all cost and it ruins me. I feel like they killed off so much I held dear in my heart that I have nothing worth left to live for. I just wish I could find myself again, get back in touch with my true feelings and passions because I feel emotionally dead and physically drained. I've been at home for so long trying to recover now but I can't get over it fast enough that I'm effectively stressing myself even more because I'm spoiling what should be the best years of my life. I'm at a loss.

It’s crazy how I used to have most of these, and I remember my ex always had me in a stressful and miserable mode whenever I was around him,im glad God provided me strength to put my foot down and leave. NOW let’s get to present tense, im so far in a healthy relationship with someone new. And I’ve been in smooth sailing with him ever since I met him, even though my ex tried to make attempts to shimmy back into my life,I refuse to allow him to get the upper hand again. I’m happier compared to how I was from March 2021- Oct 2021 when I was still having my ex in my life . Trauma from loss in relationship… I’ve had moments where I felt frail and weak and like an old man. Body moving barely. There was onetime I over heard a crush already having someone in their life. This was someone at work and immediately after hearing that, my body just couldn’t move. I stayed for another hour, sobbing, I was concentrating on work as hard as I could which helped half and half but my body? Just was shutting down. I felt dehydrated. I really tried pushing my body to move almost like screaming for it to move quick and average pace but it couldn’t. Simply couldn’t. I didn’t wanna walk out of work. I didn’t want it to seem I couldn’t control my emotions or I was a coward or I would give up easily. Wat really pushed me to call off was because my body wasn’t functioning properly like literally at all. Tried even drinking more water but didn’t help. Physical pain I can withstand Emotional pain? That will flay me alive

I find if I never think about them sexually, I don't get upset for any more than 3 days of slight depression (feels more like 3 mondays) if they have someone. Also helps IMMENSELY when it comes to talking to them and looking them in the eyes. But as soon as you start thinking really sexual, all hope of a smooth recovery or even avoiding nervousness is gone....

I’m sorry, I don’t have the slightest ounce of what you feel, maybe try going to therapy if you haven’t, it really does help.

My sister has a psychology degree and this is exactly the kind of stuff that requires therapy. I know life hasn't been great for anyone since about 2019, but it sounds like you're seriously effected by something deep seated.

This is healing for me to see my dad explained in a video. I've projected all of his own shame and guilt onto myself from a young age. To a point where I not only see how he relates but how I also portray these signs. The result of his life up to this point is the consequences of unhealed relationship trauma and I've watched him push away his long-term career just months before retiring, his marriage to my mom, our father/daughter relationship, parental/familial connections, age advancement, self-confidence, physical strength, savings. I've always known and seen that he can temporarily put these habitual reactions to the side when a circumstance calls for it, but my sympathy would always grow as I watched how he wasn't equipped to even handle this life because of his own childhood trauma. I understand that my father disassociates to comfort himself during the parts of his life where he doesn't understand. His life is meant for different, but better and aligned habitual actions. And it feels like I can lay this burden down here in this comment section. I feel as if the amygdala part of my brain is satisfied after 20 years of searching. After all that time full of lived experiences-- I can just send him this link. Thank you.

It's funny how my exes were all people who claimed not wanting to hurt me when they left because I got all of these from them. Also, I think that I used to pursue love too much, so I ended up engaging with anyone who gave me whatever looked like it, even if it wasn't. Healing is too hard, but we have to keep on going and try the best for ourselves. Like BTS said, I'm the one I should love.

Number 4 really hits me very hard. When you really try your best for someone you love but someone you love just playing heart with you it felt really hurt(a lot), since then its hard to trust people especially when you show your feeling about something that you want to share.

Thank yous omuch for this video. I have been on my path to healing from numerous aspects of trauma in my life. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia which is ALL of the symptoms mentioned here as well as BPD. I have a been managing my BPD to the point where at times I feel I am almost at that point I have been trying to achieve; yet there has always been a part of me I could not reach and didn't know how to reach... I can only say thank you, so much because now I can look at this particular aspect of my life and unknot that knot that will finally untangle the the remaining tangles left.
