Great video I like the way you explain in detail . But I still couldn't do mine wish there was someone closer to me that would build mine with care that you take.
I don't know why people say these are trouble prone but to use a 4l60 when they are both the SAME transmission, just the 60E uses electronic solenoids to actuate gears whereas the r4 in mechanical over hydraulic with several minor differences. It would be good if you could put the 200-4r ratios into these, I know you can get a replacement 1st gear that is the same from Sonnax.
Your correct. I agree. Unfortunately without some serious cnc machines and effort the ratios dont exist from unit to unit except the 2.84 reduction which makes it close to a 2004R

Don't have a lot of money but I would like to build it to pull and every once in awhile be able to hit the gas and not have to worry about tearing the transmission up ! I pulled it apart yesterday and the piston in the sun shell area the casket was blown! But there was no metal in the pan just clutch material but I still want to rebuild it all the way from the bottom to the top! PerformaBuilt Transmissions I'm new to building transmission. Don't get me wrong I have install many of them built just decided to take on this build now it's my personal one. I have watch many videos on how to rebuild them and I have stripped a couple for junk not thinking at the time. I have a 700r4 going in my 91 Silverado with a 434 sbc that I'm build the transmission for it. With that being said I have search all the upgrades and updates for it. I wanna build it to handle the horsepower and some so I have got a ideal of all the parts I'm purchasing for it. I decided to got gen 2 on everything and kolene Steels.
Nearly 30 yrs ago I came up with an very early 700 R4 and everyone said it wouldn’t be any good but now you can use new updated parts to build a good unit?next question is,is it feasible cost wise?thanks for the video’s and info
Curious... Why do they have a clutch in the torque converter? Wouldn't that place more heat to the fluid, plus debris from the clutch material.... not understand this concept...
The clutch inside is there to lock the turbine to the same speed that the housing is spinning at. the only time they fail is when there isnt an adequate pressure against the plate to hold it. Usually from something keeping the solenoid from opening all the way, or closing all the way.
56:30 question on the Servo, I bought a Corvette Servo, and it doesn't get in, I disassembled the Servo and notice the shaft it's a little thick and it doesn't Ave play, well maybe a 1/8 of play, and when I want to install the clip, it's not even close to click in the groove
Should the checkball in the output shaft be at the end of the shaft, past all of the holes? I've got a 4wd output shaft and the checkball is below the last hole towards the end
When you bypass the 4th accumulator by installing the piston upside down, do you still need the spring? My spring is broken but I’m guessing there’s no point in replacing it if I’m gonna bypass this way.
I should be pulling my trans out of my 90 corvette next week, it made a big bang while exhilarating hard and lost all gears, I was able to back it in reverse by revving the engine, should be interesting to see what I find.
im sorry i missed the part where you can get it to move in reverse, your forward sprag is damaged in the input drum. we are the only company that has come out with a mod to prevent that from happening recently

@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions I have the trans out and apart, I don't see anything broken or not working properly, the pump is apart and the only thing I see is the pump bushing is beat up and some gailing on splines of the input shaft were it goes into the torque converter.

Great video. I recently rebuilt my 700, with the wheels off the ground, it takes entirely too much rpm to get the wheels spinning, in D or Reverse. Reverse seems to take more rpm than any forward gear. I’m already preparing to have to pull the trans back out. Anything I should be looking for that would cause this?
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions you’re going to laugh at what the issue was… pulled the pan to see if I destroyed the pump. expecting to see tons of metal but there wasn’t much. I thought I’d check the filter next and voila! I forgot the damn filter! 🤣😅 it moves now 👍🏾✌🏾
What would cause a 700r4 not to shift? Ive checked the governor,throttle valve and cable and valve body and everything is moving freely. It will move in reverse and in first but will not shift.
hey 1990 k5 blazer with the 700r4 i converted from tbi to carb so i dont have the computer for lock up anymore...so i hook a toggle switch up with the 3 wires from my pig tail plug do i leave my switch on at all times or will i mess up something if i dont shut it off when im at a low soeed...i appreciate your feedback..... the doberman gang the doberman gang 1 day ago
Lockup must never be used during a shift and only at the top of 4th if using a non billet converter or single billet converter. A Triple can be locked up at the bottom or top of 3rd and 4th. Locking any converter through a shift will put all driveline components under extreme stress and will fail at any given time.
Hi, Great video! I have watched a lot of videos looking for an answer to a problem I'm having. I pulled a 700r4 from a truck which I rebuilt a few years ago to put in another car, It was working pretty good but I wanted to tighten up 2-3 and 3-4 shifts, so I did some spring and spacer work, changed valve body gaskets, and got the results I wanted, it shifts great. The only thing that puzzles me is that I have a very long delay in engine hold back when I downshift. I wonder what I missed? Did I forget a check ball, or maybe the gaskets were the wrong ones. Any ideas what I should look for? Much thanks.

Just took it out for a spin and at first it seemed to be better, but not really, then down into first it tried to grab and let go, and tried to grab and let go a few times. so the problem is in all gears. And if you are driving along in any gear there is no hold back when you let off the throttle for a long delay. But will eventually connect.
if the build is right and no mistakes were made in the overrun section of the drum or downshift sections of the valvebody, then I would get some tuning software and adjust the downshift tables in the tcm. Im guessing though a mistake was made somewhere in the overrun area of the drum or the valve body. the easiest way to tell if we have a mechanical problem is log downshift commands and watch for delays. if its commanding right away and still taking time then there is definitely a issue internally.
Hey there guys! Been needing some help if yall can, i just rebuilt a 700r4 and ive done a dozen of them, but i cant get this one to shift into 4th gear it does not rev up trying tk shift into 4th it just doesnt speed along with rpm will go up in 3rd gear nothing is slipping it is just not shifting into 4th for some odd reason
I have a 700r4 in my truck but it go’s into 1st Nd 2nd gear but won’t shift into 3rd gear it high revs on 2nd but won’t shift gear could it need a rebuild?
Is this the transmission that’s in the 84 s10 blazer? Trying to help my parents with their transmission.. it slips going into 3-4th gears n revvs up very high n eventually eases into gear.. don’t want them to throw a rod trying to drive to the grocery store...
I've been looking at options for my 88 chevy k2500 with a 700r4. I've read a lot that these units aren't good for towing. Can they be rebuilt better than factory ratings? Or are they truly limited in their capability?
Nope never have. Goes in dry, gets dyno tested and we have perfect results years and years later. Soaking is a old myth and many shops i talk to often dont anymore as well

They will fluctuate a bit yes but how much fluctuation are we talking? if it acts normal and the fluids pink then i would just run it. not many people know anything about transmissions even if they are a rebuilder
Actual machining on the plates, drum, and pistons themselves. Its very very hard to do and lots of measuring along with a shim i make. I only do it in special cases and i dont recommend just trying it with little experience because its so exact if not done correctly the sprag could slip out of a clutch and the pistons could apply other packs in the drum as well.
just wondering, if someone brought a trannsmission and kit, about what is the cost to have one rebuilt. I'm guessing without filming and explaining it goes quicker
your just going to have to go by our reputation online if you do some homework. ALL transmission companies use some used parts such as the case itself. GM does not make them new along with many of the parts in it.
I have a very strange "issue" with my build, and no one that I have talked to, knows, or has any idea as to why it is like it is, as well as there is nothing online about it either. These are the shift lever positions and their functions. Park=Park. Reverse=Reverse. Neutral=Neutral. OverDrive=Neutral. Drive=LO. 2nd=LO. 1st=LO... I have already torn into this thing 4 times and have not found the cause to this. I have checked and changed valve bodies, pumps, and have triple checked every band, accumulator, clutch packs, seals, gears, planetaries, sprags, and check balls. Nothing has changed the out come. The last thing that could possibly be a problem is the case itself. Any ideas to the cause would be much appreciated.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Changing to a fresh known working case didnt change anything. Problem is still there. Last 2 things that could possibly be would be the 3/4 over run drum or reverse drum where the fluid flows. Im not sure anymore what the problem could be.
update on this issue. It did manage to get 2 and 3 for a short time, then lost them with in 10 minutes, but nothing would still happen in the O.D shifter position.
@@pepperknight8664 I have yet to come across a transmission that will skip right into OD. each valve has to be in a certain location for oil to flow through on every gear... if one of the valves is stuck and not going to a preselect location the oil will not travel to the next selected gear... there is something traveling through the valve body and blocking or restricting movement of the valves. It doesnt take much for a valve to get stuck with some small piece of grit. Make sure all the valves move freely
i was told my trans is internal grounded its hydraulic if i for get to cut the switch off it will kick it self out automatically and i wouldnt burn burn my trans up.....
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions i ran a hot switch on one wire and tie the other two togather and the switch works fine .my 4 gear come in about 45 mph and about 50 mph my lock up come on...
We’re can I find the little wiring harness that goes from the trans to a wire coming out of the fire wall on a 84 Chevy 1/2 ton truck. Not the tvcable.

I bought a 1984 Camaro z28 with a 700R4 with a 27 spine input shaft The guy rebuilt the transmission and when he put it in gear I didn’t move or do nothing so we parked the car until I got the car he put a 30 spine torque converter in so I pulled the Tranny and put in a 27 spine torque converter in my question is if the TV cable is too tight will it pop out of fourth gear and act like it’s in neutral But if I manually shift it in third gear it’s fine?
It would not act like its in neutral if the tv was too tight im not sure you have the right converter or the pump could be broken or damaged during install.
Im pretty much at the point where i think you need to just start over. Not sure why you would put a 30 spline converter on a 27 spline shaft. I am really confused by your description
how is the lock up wired. I see the 2 wire solenoid and a wire assuming going to the exterior plug passthrough and a wire going to the pressure switch. is the switch normally open or closed?
