That Peerless Double oaked is like Grandpa's warm den where he used to smoke cigars but hasn't in a year or two. There are some old books on the shelf that have a dustiness to them and an antique smell. The couch is old but you could nap on it all day. Then the clove/pine popurie in the other room starts to slightly come in through the door. That is how I see this pour every time lol.
I would add WT 101. It’s really accessible, versatile, high rye and good with the bourbon newbies and experts. I would also add Alberta rye if you can find it. It’s got the high proof, and 95/5 rye for those who like a high rye. To quote Jason C from the Mash & Drum “It’s not about the bourbon, but the people you share it with”. I’m convinced that bourbon taste better with good company
Penelope Toasted series bourbons are sooooo great for this list! Marshmallow, nutmeg on oak and sweet cinnamon flavors can baste my liver all season long.
Totally agree with you Chad on the 1910. To my tastebuds it’s all char & oak with no sweetness. Nice holiday / wintertime pours to me are Wilderness Trail Sib Rye, and Knob Creek Rye cask strength with a few drops of water.
I like my woodford double oaked and Makers 101. Also not a bourbon but Benedictine liqueur is basically Christmas in a glass, nutmeg spice goodness. Cheers
Please review Whistle Pig 🐖 They start on Russian market. Would be interesting to know what we will have inside bottle Because it is quite expensive vs other rye whisky
Great list. I would add the 2021 release of Michter's Toasted bourbon. If it's anything like the 2018 release, it's perfect for fall and winter. It's like toasted marshmallows, maple syrup, and graham crackers.
I think I found a way to make my allocated bourbons and Japanese Whiskies last a lot longer. I will try to stick to drinking my allocated Japanese whiskies from the beginning of spring to the end of Summer and my allocated bourbons at the beginning of fall to the end of winter. Not saying I won't have either of them on the opposite seasons but, I will try to have them at a restaurant vs my own bottles. I feel like it's kind of dumb but, my first bottle of Yamazaki 12 is going on it's second year without being done yet. It is close but, I have about 4-6 more pours until it's done. Samething with my Stagg Jr batch 13. Hoping to run into some more awesome bottles this year and years to come. Have a good one guys.
Just grabbed and am enjoying an FAE-02 as I watch this. Costco had them for $48. And so far I’m digging it. Not sure if I prefer the 01 or 02. My holiday whiskey is always a Makers of some sort or, if I’m feeling rich, Jack Single barrel rye special release.
I just did a rye blind flight. The past couple of years I had pegged Pikesville as my fav. But tonight Old Forester Rye at $20 beat it! Mind blowwwwwwn. Angel's beat out both. :)
Fun fact about the Restoration Rye: If you buy it at the Castle & Key distillery/gift shop, you can buy a wooden gift box along with it to really sell the gift-giving aspect. Drives the price up quite a bit, but it's an option.
I tried Angel's Envy Rye for the first time this year and completely agree that it needs to go into the holiday rotation. I also have a WhistlePig single barrel cask strength that tastes like Christmas in a glass. It's a unicorn, as my other 2 WP store picks are quite different, but I love it. And I can't wait to try the NULU Toasted Barrel, seems like a great candidate to add to the party.
1910 is by far my favorite OF. I don’t get fruitcake at all but love the oak and sweetness of it and I think it’s ABV is the sweet spot. 1920 is probably my least favorite… 🤷🏼♂️
I'm in on the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked all year round! The Four Roses one is great as well; have not yet had the Makers Mark mentioned in there...
Midwinter Night's Dram or FAE-02 if you had to save one from a burning building, which do you choose? Also, one to add to the list for those crazy Peaty Scotch lovers is my pick: High West's Double RYE Barrel Select in Peated Scotch.
I'm definitely gonna have to agree with Sara on the Angel's Envy Rye. It's Christmas in a bottle imo. My other holiday pours would be Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye and my VA ABC store pick of Knob Creek Single Barrel Select Rye. Excellent list guys. Cheers!
Another excellent show. If you can find it Knob Creek Twice Barreled Rye, delicious. It's a limited release, and may be exclusive to British Columbia Canada (?), as I have spoken to some of my American friends and they have not seen it on the shelves. If you find it, you won't be disappointed. Another (might be exclusive to Canada as well) Alberta Premium 20 Year. !00% Rye, a lower abv but still very tasty. They also have a Cask Strength at 63.7% abv that is also very good, and 100% Rye. I read that Whistle Pig sources much of their rye from the Alberta Premium Distillery. I love high rye mash bills, the higher the better.
I’ve tended to enjoy the rye’s during the winter time of year. My favorites this year have been the OF 100 proof rye (the rich barley and spice have reminded me of a cigar city’s winter warmer barley wine that also happens to be perfect for the chilly nights in Florida) and as well as the Sagamore Spirit double oaked ( In the winter it reminds me of finally getting back to summer and grilling in the back yard. With the smell of charred fat and bacon it’s the perfect transition back to normalcy and getting past the holidays as well as remembering beach season is around the corner) Salud!
Fun episode... not completely in agreement but love your impressions. I might have to try Angel's Envy again ... I've been drinking Woodford Double Oak recently but it's doesn't get all that cold where I live.
Almost all of these were bourbons/ryes that I would drink during the colder months. Four Roses SiB is one I have nearby constantly now. I'm keeping an eye out for the FAE-02, did pick of the FAE-01 though. Midwinter Night is very much a December pour of mine, someone donated it so I am very please to have that option this year. What I must find HILARIOUS, leaving Kentucky I overpaid for a bottle at the airport... a Peerless Double Oak... both you and Mash & Drum had it in videos recently. I had to skip over it on this one so I can have as much as an impartial thoughts about it as I can!
I get a lot of Dill / pickle juice note on the restoration rye. Wasn’t for me but looking forward to their bourbon and Wheater coming out in the future..
I've had every bourbon known. I think Elijah Craig barrel proof tops alot of them. The flavors are unbelievable. Thank you guys for all your wonderful videos.
Not my favorite, but I know my FIL will be pushing his spiked egg nog on everybody. Also, if I can pick nits, how about an "affordable" or "widely available" top 8 or 10 holiday bourbons and ryes?
Wow I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like 1910. Interesting. I know there are people out there that like & dislike everything but 1910 is one I think that is very hard to dislike. Wonder if you got a bad bottle or it got too hot over a long period of time before you bought it?
The label on the Restoration Rye bottle is quite disconcerting. I think that bottle needs hidden after Halloween- unless you like dismembered limbs as a decor item.
