What does an adult do if they forget their lunch? Do you go hungry? No. You go buy something, get delivery, etc. Yet a 6 year-old child is expected to go hungry. So she's imposing standards on a little kid that adults don't even have to abide by. This is enraging.

As a teacher, yes, I would step in and give her lunch. She’s 6 and no, you shouldn’t feel ok about leaving the teacher feeling uncomfortable about YOUR daughter being hungry. We had a 6 year old hop in the car for school without putting shoes on. The teacher called his mom to ask to bring him shoes. His mom wouldn’t bring him shoes to teach him a lesson to bring shoes next time. That was a punishment for the teacher who didn’t get a break from kids that day because he had to stay inside for recess with her while she ate her lunch. It’s your responsibility as a parent to make sure that your kids, especially 6 year old kids, leave the house with shoes and lunch every day.

That happen to me when I was in second grade. That day my mom didn't fix my lunch or gave me money for lunch. So I ask my friend for money and our teacher step in and told him not give any of his money. When we got to the lunch room, she made my set a table by myself. I started crying and Lunch lady came over. Ask me what's wrong, I told her. Then she told me get in the lunch line and get your lunch. I said I don't have any money. She said that's ok go get your lunch, I go talk to your teacher.

I agree… at that age it is easy to forget things. But Ruby wanted to play the strict responsible mom teaching their kids life lessons. Fast forward she’s an insane monster mom and child abuser who starved that same little girl that forgot her lunch. It is very sad. Specially knowing that Russell the 12 year old that escaped was so malnourished that he stopped growing. But they are safe now but will have to get so much therapy after all of this. It took this to save them.

I was sent to a teen program owned by and LDS family in Arizona for over a year when I was 16. The church not only suggested it to my parents, they also paid for the entire thing- over $50,000. It was horrific emotional and mental abuse I still struggle with 25 years later. I’d love to see all those programs shut down.

Having raised 2 wonderful, smart, compassionate daughters (who both, it turns out, have ADHD), I can't even begin to imagine letting them go hungry for things they forgot to do when they were little. Kids, even if they don't have ADHD, are all little space cadets, because their minds are busy figuring out this thing called Life. What a horrible thing, to punish them for being human.

People who are not Mormon, who are not in the harsh or abusive mode of treating others (children or ANYONE), see what Ruby was even before Jodi. Ruby was a sadist prior to meeting Jodi so it is not as Ruby presented later, when she wept at the sentencing…like she had been in so terribly influenced by Jodi. The phone calls between Kevin and Ruby when she was first in jail tell the story of what is true…they were on the same page, they believed in the harsh treatment of the children, they believed the children had evil in them (when the truth most likely is that Ruby and definitely Jodi are partially possessed. Listen to Kevin speaking about when Jodi moved into their home for awhile and research exorcisms, and Jerry Marzinsky’s work).

it's crazy how social workers seem to think neat and tidy people can't be abusers... Our home was neat and tidy BECAUSE of abusive screaming and yelling and dragging kids out of dead sleep at 3am to "complete the chore chart" that was sterile hospital environment level nutso. How many non abusive cluttery people are dragged through the ringer because they don't have a dishwasher or live in a small sq ft house that looks more messy than a rich person with 3000sqft house with the exact same number of items "out" of place. As kids initialy it felt affirming that our mom was being reported but you know how many times we bothered to speak up to CPS after they kept LEAVING us in the home after investigating and being enamored by the martha stewart decor-zero times. what's the point. so we can be in extra trouble when you leave? I'm tired of social worker excuses. You don't have a good model to assess abuse. That's the bottom line. You're bias and shooting in the dark. Being overworked isn't the real core of the issue.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. My family was what you would consider middle class. My grandma finally reported my parents for abuse of me and my younger sibling when I was a teenager. (I'd been telling her what was going on for years.) There's definitely a class/socioeconomic element within what gets investigated thoroughly and what does not. I was not allowed contact with my grandma after she reported. That was the "punishment" because my grandma and I were close. Just because the house is clean and looks nice/the kids have nice clothes doesn't mean abuse isn't going on. I would say given my experience that most middle-class abusers know enough about the system and how it works to tow a fine line. My parents were highly educated and it plays a role in whether or not a child will be believed. Another way, I was punished was to be given counseling when I was younger after telling school staff what was going on at home. It looked good on the outside, but my parents wanted to convince me that I was the problem.

The greatest news is that one of her children was given the strength to escape and get help for themself and their siblings. I am German and watched 8 passengers when I was younger. I guess it was interesting for us Europeans to watch how people - and Mormons live in America. I remember thinking: wow such a strict mom. But to some extent I was just thinking: oh okay, that's how things are in America. I stopped watching when Chad was sent to camp. I found that too extreme. I still followed occasionally and it definitely got worse and worse from there. Would be interesting to know when Jodi entered the picture. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 4 years ago. Yeah, very horrific. When I first saw clips of her channel, I thought it was a joke. I thought that there is no way a mother is not only doing these things, but proudly broadcasting it. It really shows how crazy she truly is. She doesn’t believe she is wrong. She thinks abusive behavior is normal. I mean, I don’t want to absolve her of responsibility by implying she doesn’t know right from wrong. She’s a functioning adult who knows right from wrong. But she has somehow convinced herself that what she was doing was okay and normal. A lot of abusers hide the abuse. They try to keep up a facade of normality. She didn’t even attempt to hide it. It shows how dangerous extreme religious beliefs can be. A toxic religious leader can convince people that these things are right. I will never understand how people fall for them. Ruby had to have already had some evil in her to do everything she did. Religion can be a powerful tool for abusers. Jodi’s influence just gave her a perceived “pass” to act on it.

@JordanandMcKay, @Mormon Stories Podcast as a former watcher of 8passengers I quickly want to give two examples of the youngest daughter's "egregious" behavior, that was pointed out in two vlogs. 1) The first one must haven taken place shortly after Jodi came into their lives. It was still in the old house, around 2019, so E. was 5 or 6 years old. The family was getting ready to go to the movies when it was decided that Ruby would stay home with E., because E. had to be punished for not being "humble". Now what could a 5/6 year old have done to not be humble? She had asked which movie they were going to see. Yep. A question that 99,9% of people would ask if they were going to the movies. But Ruby explained that the children had to be grateful for whichever movie they were going to see. Now just to make that clear: it was NOT that E. had asked which movie they were going to see, was told which one it was and then threw a tantrum. NOTHING the like. Simply her asking about the movie was considered entitled/ungrateful/not humble and had to be punished. 2) The other incident was in the new house, so must have been a year or two later, with E. now being 6 or 7. The video was titled something like "being sick sucks" or whatever. In it, Ruby told us that E. was having a pretty high fever and was sick in bed. She went on to explain that she had heard E. whimpering throughout the night and at one time get up and go downstairs in the kitchen to get herself some ice. Ruby went on to explain that she did NOT get up to check on E., because she thought her 6 year old daughter whimpering throughout the night was an attempt of manipulation. So this mom didn't check on her little girl who was clearly in distress to punish her for "manipulating" her parents. She was also gleaming when she was recounting this story and didn't seem to feel any kind of remorse about her behavior, even when she found out the next morning that E. was actually sick. These are the types of "behavior" the little kids displayed to be labled as being "in distortion" by Jodi and Ruby. On a side note: E. sometimes got in trouble at school for kinda being the class clown. Which is tragic, because this behavior was actually taught to her by Ruby. E. was constantly filmed since she was a toddler and she was made to act early on. If she did something funny or cute and the camera wasn't on, she was encouraged to reenact it for the camera. She was praised for being silly/funny/spunky/cute in front of the camera all the time, she was told that viewers loved it and was given more attention from her mom when behaving like that, because she delievered content for Ruby's camera. She was absolutely groomed to be hyper and acting to entertain and make people like her. It doesn't come as a surprise then that a 5/6/7 year old applies the same methods to be liked at school. It was the one behavior she knew would get her attention and love.

Thank you for explaining this, I was wondering what would be considered egregious. Also the "they're just manipulating" is often an excuse for denying medical care to kids in the troubled teen industry, for example it played a role in the death of Taylor Goodrich (I think that's her last name). Why are accusations of being manipulative so common in Utah/Mormon culture, when the person in question is just trying to get their needs met?

She’s an absolute piece of work with her perfect hair and makeup and outfits, while she passes judgment on a nine yr old kid for not being humble enough or having sufficient gratitude. Heart breaking to see the earlier videos of Russell and Eve and know that they wound up bound and starved by their lunatic mother. She’s too proud and stubborn to show any remorse or back down from her ridiculous nonsense so hopefully the judge will throw the book at her and she’ll sit in prison for YEARS. Happy 10th Birthday to little Eve, I hope she gets to see her older sister at least. In the video where Ruby threatened to cut off her bear’s head, Sherri swooped in to hug her and I suspect that happened a lot.

@@lindajohnson. Yes, from everything I've seen so far (and I didn't even know about this family until this week), it looks like...at best...Kevin just checked out mentally, physically and emotionally and just let things happen. (His attitude seems to have been "whatever you say, Ruby".) I gather from statements made here and there, though, that when these recent events happened Kevin and Ruby had been separated for some time and the kids weren't living with Kevin. The duct tape, extreme starvation/emaciation and isolation things were happening at Jodi's house in Ivins, Utah (close to St. George). Things probably escalated after the separation and when Ruby and Jodi had complete custody of the kids. Hard to say whether Kevin knew the full extent of what was going on at Jodi's house. He definitely SHOULD have been more pro-active and concerned about their welfare and SHOULD have known how dangerous it would be to let Ruby just have free reign, since she seems to have demonstrated an almost sadistic glee in meting out harsh discipline in the past. Kevin seems to have been way too detached and unconcerned. But I have no idea what went on in their household for the 90% of the time that the cameras weren't turned on. Ruby was probably in charge of editing everything they uploaded in the past.

Ruby's "if your child is on fire, you hurt them to put the fire out" example is INSANE. I have literally had a friend set themselves (accidentally) on fire, and my brother put them out by tackling them with a blanket. IT. DID. NOT. HURT. HER. She was just instantly relieved. Yes, the burns hurt, but literally nobody thought that my brother was doing anything but helping. There was no "Why are you abusing her?" Ruby is bizarre and clearly delusional and unsafe. Jail is the best place for her; there is no way she needs to be running around free to interact with innocent and unsuspecting humans, children or otherwise.

That analogy was so weird. Yes, “beating out the flames” is a thing (usually with wet towels or burlap sacks) but you usually don’t beat out the flames on a person. And I would think any kid on fire would be screaming “Mom, mom! I’m on fire! Put it out! Put it out!”

My kids think I like being “the garbage disposal” (that’s what I call it when I eat after they are full.) they didn’t realize we had very little because I did so happily. Lots of people scrimp for their kids. I however do not think this mom had a job and she had the time and the money. I grew up with Ruby. She lived around the corner from me. We were not in the same ward, since my house was the boundary line for my ward, but we were in the same stake. We went to girls camps, and other stake activities together. We played together as little girls, slept over at each other's homes, went to each other's birthday parties, walked to school together... I am 2 years older than her, and she was 6 when her family moved in. I've been paying attention to the things going on with her for the last several years. And I'm horrified at where this has gone. There are a lot of things that still aren't clear to me. I wonder how far back the connection between Ruby and Jodi go. I get the impression that Jodi was filling Ruby's head with horrific ideas long before they formally went into business together. Ruby may have been relatively normal before she came under the influence of Jodi. From what I've seen so far, it looks like Kevin's biggest failing was that he was just too passive and let Ruby make all of the parenting decisions. As things got progressively worse, it looks like he just wasn't up to dealing with it in any constructive way. Reading between the lines, the older kids seem to blame Ruby for the abuse and Kevin for enabling/stepping back and letting Ruby run wild. I'm just guessing at this point, based on the limited information available.

One of my favorite books growing up was _Where the Wild Things Are_ and in this book Max is sent to bed without his supper. It seems as though teachers, family members, neighbors and other members of the public were reporting Ruby for about two years and nothing seems to have been done. John, I'm one of the 50% never-mo viewers whose been here for years. It is this Griffiths family that caused me to find your podcast. I've watched the Griffiths family of vloggers from the very beginning when Ellie + Jared (the youngest Griffiths sister) first started their channel to document their infertility journey. The rest of the siblings and parents followed E+J vlogging lead when they made their own channels. I think this is why the 8Passengers channel exploded in popularity so quickly because Ruby's sisters already had large and successful RU-vid channels when Ruby started 8 Passengers. Anyway, it is because of this family that I found Mormon Stories Podcast. I became fascinated with learning more about their religion because previously I only knew of Mormonism = polygamy. And I couldn't understand how these people who seemed to have it all going for them could be Mormon. So I started looking into it and found your podcast and never left. These stories are fascinating to me. Now talking about 8Passengers feels like it's coming full-circle for me today. Under very unfortunate circumstances, of course. I brought my therapy dog to see teen young women at the Utah State Hospital in Utah County. One of the girls became very attached and it was arranged that I would bring him to her outpatient therapy. She eventually ended up in that place in Orem and I was supposed to be able to see her…with the permission of her parents who thought my dog and ai were great influences on her. They told me they had arranged it. When I called to go, I was told no. So I asked if I could speak on the phone to her…”no.” I explained that I was on the list and was told that her therapist decided that I couldn’t see her. It was so weird. I was so worried that she’d think I abandoned her.

Oh course not, Keven will not be given custody of his kids. There's procedures that CPS will put him through. He will have to go through lot of interviews and visit before CPS will hand his kids over to him. That is a if. His kids might decide they want live with one of their aunts. There's also a possibility that Ruby could end up with a none guilty verdict. But it depends on what her kids tell the person that is questioning them that will determined in what verdict she get. A mental verdict could keep her out of prison. But, she will lose all custody of her kids if that happens, she won't be allow to be around children at all. The other two verdict will be best for her..

I knew about this family here and there because of other channels' coverage of them and was always somewhat interested as someone who was raised in a strict, violent, angry, traditional Christian household. As someone who grew up with very strict, disciplinarian parents who were like Ruby lite, I can understand the feeling the children and family may have felt that they were unheard - on the channel Markie, he has a video from a few months ago where the sisters and Shari seemed to insinuate that there was things happening behind the scenes, if she was isolating them more and more, and taught them to sweep the problems under the rug (I was taught this as a child to not "air out our family's dirty laundry" - which to my parents could be very innocuous things - or I'd be punished for it) the extended family may not have known how bad things may have gotten. I feel so much for those children and hope they are surrounded by support so they can heal

“Virtue signaling” aka demonstrating bigotry in the case of that fast food chain. In my observation of the prevalent culture in Utah there’s is such a push to perfectionism that “fake perfect” seems better than authentic. In relation to troubled teens, one LDS neighbor sent their daughter to a Christian camp for troubled teens in Jamaica where she was forced to wear dresses that resembled FLDS garb. I was horrified. How do you protect your 13 year old child when they’re in another country?

The fast food chain didn't demonstrate bigotry. Saying your religion doesn't believe in something isnt hate....it does say those things in the Bible about homosexuality, but many of us are conflicted on that. I dont think the people who went to chic FIL a were all there for good reasons....I would go to support a chain that stands by their convictions, and to support people being free to have their own beliefs . If others went for hateful reasons thats not on the chain. Also most religions have far harsher and actual hate filled views on lgbtq issues....chic FIL a showed they aren't bigots by donating free food on a Sunday when the pulse night club tragedy happened. I hate ruby turned the chic FIL a thing into more than it was in my opinion.

@@erikaelyse8192I have never gone to that chain since they took that stance and they only changed their tune because it was hurting their business- so many people boycotted them. When I lived in Houston in the 80’s my church encouraged us to attend a meeting where a special speaker was coming. He had left the Mormon faith. He was to speak on the Mormon beliefs. As the speaker was starting the vestibule doors opened and 6 men stood at the back of the church. They men were dressed in white shirts and tied. Immediately the speaker was shuffled off the side door and the meeting was dismissed. Frightening.
