Margi, I LOVE how you so eloquently help people acknowledge the importance of self-examination, which helps introduce the concept of allowing personal "permission" to connect with and examine our emotional needs as an individual. ❤

I really enjoyed this episode. I’m a competitive cheerleading coach from an area that isn’t Mormon at all. I had one athlete who was Mormon tried out thinking it was just side like cheerleading. She was just amazing such a wonderful talented kid. She as freshman was even being scouted for college in the middle of the year. We had competitions and practice every Sunday. I remember her father coming to me and speaking with me about his issues with Sundays and how this interfered with church. He was going to allow her to uphold the commitment that she made to the team and finish the season how ever she wouldn’t be returning because of how much Sundays interfered with church. Oh I tried so hard to try and convince him other wise and she didn’t at all put up a fight or a fuse she just excepted it even though I knew she was heartbroken. AllI could do was thank him for even allowing her to finish the season and not pulling her off as it would have hurt the team. This was the first and only time I ever had to deal with this and I honestly decades later I never forget her.

I recognize so much of Nan’s story as similar to my own. Feeling of responsibility for your family. I was adopted and my parents needed care… so I believed that I was born and given to my parents to be their caretaker, this was my life’s purpose. Took me a long time to understand that in was meant to have my own full life, not just be a caretaker/shadow to them.

2:01:42 this is what every YW I know in my generation was taught and I think that’s a message they still get at church. Maybe it’s not as prevalent, I don’t know, but I definitely was taught and at least the generation after me was taught that the woman’s job is to be responsible for making everyone in the family. It wasn’t about teamwork-ing difficult problems. It was about the woman making people comfortable and happy is how the family is successful. I adopted the saying “if it is to be it is up to me” early on, because in addition to those ideas of making your family happy, every member is taught that the emotions we feel are our choice, that we should avoid contention, that we should “pick our battles” meaning we should be really thoughtful about the complaints we do make. Basically we learn to sweep stuff under the rug and hold all the tension inside ourselves… in an unhealthy way.

My home was definitely church centered growing up. My parents live(d) what they believe. I respect them for that. There was always plenty of love in our home. All 4 sons have served (or are serving) in bishoprics &/or as bishops.. I had a slow backing away before I finally left after my husband's last affair & subsequent suicide. My sister is beginning to ask questions. I met Sally & Nan in my sister's ward years ago when we were all still quite active. Genuinely lovely people. I sometimes wish my brothers & their families would open their eyes, but I believe that they believe they're truly happy & feel like whether they decide to question or not is really none of my business. None of them has shut me out & I couldn't be more grateful. ❤

Yes. Margi's "gentle" ball-bat moments are invaluable. I often wonder when her quavering voice is fighting the volcano or she is determinedly making a path thro the dark-matter empathy that often cripples many of us (esp. hothouse perfectionists). Whatever it may be, IT IS VALIANT. Piercing insight, pithy, no-holds-barred expression encourages - invites - one to move boldly into "out-of-bounds" waters where the worst consequence one is most likely to incur will be infuriated compassion. wish I could be that cool; I just essplode 🥺

I had almost this kind of upbringing, where I couldn’t choose my own choices, the thing here I was more stubborn and headstrong that I always wanted to choose for myself, if god has plans it’s because god chooses for us, but it goes against free will, god wants us to choose by ourselves and respects if we make mistakes, making mistakes it’s part of life, it’s very interesting how the role of the gospel that if we make mistakes it’s the worst that we could do for the Mormon community.

I think every human on this planet has the right to freedom of their own minds. No one had the right to force people into a belief system through threats of hell in the afterlife or even family abandonment. This kind of behaviour is very cultish. The focus should be raising good, kind law abiding children that can support themselves and live a happy life. It saddens me how controlling some families are about the operation of another persons mind. Forcing someone to believe a certain religion isn’t saving souls. It’s a selfish act. It’s purely to make the controller feel empowered. No one knows the meaning of life. It’s the number one question and human beings have pondered this question for centuries. You have the right to believe what you choose to believe but I am opposed to people basically pressuring others to believing the same belief system through threats.

This is something I’ve always been confused about. So many parents who end up haven’t a gay child will say, “We should have known. She always dressed like a boy and liked boy things (or the opposite for a boy). What does preferences, like the clothes a child wears or the toys they like or the things they are interested in have to do with who they are sexually attracted to?

As a non-Mormon, I always figured Mormons had to know about John Smith’s history because of the polygamous unofficial branch of Mormons aside from what you’d learn generally being part of US culture. (And as a result, I couldn’t imagine anyone believing in their religion.) I guess their culture is that closed. Had no idea they had the same prohibition that JWs have about reading non-JW literature. How do you not know you’re a member of a cult when you are told not to do outside reading? When you’re not allowed to question? Found out about JWs by allowing them in and after a discussion, suggesting reading material to them and it wasn’t even anti-JW literature. It was a book more in line with their teachings. I was shocked. Just as I’m shocked now.

To be a Mormon, what's good about it? Muslims say their faith is the true religion too and so are Jehova's Witnesses. Why is being a Mormon better than the others? l hear a lot about how good it is as far as communities and so forth but how about the foundation of Mormon spiritually/faith/belief and so forth?
@elizabethgrogan8553
@elizabethgrogan8553 Год назад
@Sepeti Sione Latu I think appearances are everything in Mormonism. It's what the entire community thinks of you, more than what God thinks of you. The extremely wealthy "church" expects members to do service. That includes cleaning the church weekly, leading male or female groups, donating food for special events, all prepared by the women with each vying for "the best" food. The LDS (Mormon) church demands far too much of its members, despite having assets of at least $300billion. It requires all members to pay 10% of their total income to the "church". If they don't, they will not be allowed to enter the temple. It is, without doubt, the most controlling Religion I've ever heard of. I worked for a Mormon. He was a lecherous scammer. It cemented, for me, that members can be beyond evil.
@StrikeforceJedi
@StrikeforceJedi Год назад
@Elizabeth Grogan I also worked for a mormon, he is physical therapist in Arizona. You're absolutely right about alot of how they seem is just for appearances. He had many affairs with his female patients. He also did many things which were scammy and under the table. His wife ended up divorcing him, he ended up marrying one of the women he had an affair with.

Nan's whole young life seems to have revolved around her father. Everything is framed in terms of him. Obviously she adored, even idolized him, but she does not seem to realise ( what I infer after listening for 40 minutes) how much this constrained and limited her life and probably framed her future - the tyranny of love and living in the shadow of a " great man". For me it is strange to hear a woman in her sixties speak of growing up and make it an elegy for one parent.
@estherhelbig

But I am happy, that she at least had a loving dad. Maybe she doesn't want to look back and then feel sad or dissappointed about her past choices. But I think, she had great parents even if they both were very religious. Nan is a very loving mom who is able to learn new things, and she accepts their children 's decisions and supports them. And I guess, her parents did a lot of things right.

It's backwards thinking, the church loves to make people feel guilty for not living the life they want or expect it's members to live, like they think it's wrong/ feel it's "not of the Lord" if you wear condoms, but they have lessons that hammer home you have to have intercourse in a marriage and if not then that's why your marriage is falling apart. I've heard these lessons over and over and over again and it bothered me because they try to make people feel guilty if you're not living the marriage they want you to live, especially if your not even married, I'm so glad I left

Basically there trying to get people in marriages just to have kids because they feel like if you have kids it will better your marriage & testimony and it will help with your marital problems 🤷‍♂️

Birth control is NOT forbidden in the church. She is conflating what her mother thought and taught her with what the church taught. A lot of what she describes is just her mom’s personal preferences and choices (partly because of the extreme and tragic circumstances involving her dad) - not dictates of her religion. We ARE encouraged to stay home (if financially possible) when our children are young - and child experts today will tell you it’s the preferred model for raising kids. We were never pressured to “stay thin” - that would have been a personal goal of their family. Nothing more. Women in the church were never taught to subjugate their own interests and pursuits in order to please their husbands. If we learned about cooking in Homemaking, it was how to stretch a dollar or make more nutritious food (things that fill the internet now) - NOT just to make our husbands happier. We also learned things like how to talk to our kids about difficult subjects. As long ago as 25 years ago, I was Homemaking Leader and I had a medical doctor (non LDS), a psychologist, and a survivor come and speak to the sisters on the difference between situational depression and clinical depression. And the vital role that medical intervention and medication can play in treating it and surviving it. I also insisted that the bishop attend so that he could gain more insight on the issue because he would assuredly be counseling people experiencing it. Over the years, I’ve attended Homemaking lessons on domestic abuse and how to deal with it (specifically involving safety and law enforcement). We toured the foundry of a local sculptor - who later offered classes - which several of us took). We’ve talked about careers to look into after our children are all in school (My bishop’s wife worked when her kids got into elementary school). Recently, we had a RS activity where a local artist came and taught us all the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Every ward I’ve ever lived in had an active women’s book club that read all sorts of books on history, war, nutrition, politics, etc. And yes, lots of lessons on domestic skills like cooking, crafts, decorating - things that interest women of all beliefs enough to keep stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, ceramic stores, and Food Network thriving year in and year out. Women tend to like those things. Brigham Young was adamant that women should get an education - including university. Women in Utah had the vote before it even became a state. Women in the church have held outside jobs since the earliest days of the church. One of my favorite comments in a Sunday School class was when the teacher said, “Why do you suppose that Christ appeared to Mary Magdalene first after his resurrection and told HER to tell the apostles?” One lovely lady in the class spoke up: “To teach the brethren that they need to be able to take instruction from the women!” I love that lady. So much of what she seems to interpret and what the host flatly states as fact is just flat out untrue about church rules or even culture. I’m the same age as she is. Raised in the church the way she was - and NONE of her experiences or perceptions about the church bear any resemblance to mine. Her belief system came from her mom’s perspective, not the church’s. We are a church filled with strong, intelligent, educated, independent women. Maybe if she HAD gone to BYU, she’d have met some of us.

@@tracyarmstrong2953 well here's the thing, from what I've experienced when I was a member was a lot of women back in 2017 had zero desire to be a working mom or even a career driven adult for the most part they would tell me to my face that there main goal is to finish college and be a stay at home mom/housewife which is fine but what I told them was you shouldn't let that be your only option, if you feel you can do something else or if you personally feel that's the only option you have but are curious to see other options, explore & see what else is out there. The Mormon church has this thing and it's not as extreme as it was 6 years ago but they had this thing we're men when they get home from missions they have to date right away, get a job, go to school and once you feel connected to someone doesn't matter if you've known the person for 3 whole months and yes I have seen this quite often in Provo, many people tell me after they get engaged after they know each for that amount a time that the prophet states you have to find a soulmate and if your both compatible don't question marry each other and once your married make your foundation right away. The only problem with that is 1, you don't really know the person or the person's full lifestyle & 2 when you marry someone in 6months which is the average time frame in Utah Mormon culture especially Provo you have to rush & overstress all of the things you could've been working on before you get married. I'm just saying I think people if they feel comfortable just being together for a year or 2 to see where things go is perfectly fine & normal than just rushing it because they feel they have to for the Gospel

Waite on the Lord. He knows our children and he will Orchestrate his plan for our children and put people in places for them you need to wait on the Lord. Keep praying and wait on the Lord. I’m sure you did all the right things like we all did but why are we losing the battle there’s a lot of reasons and all you could do at this point is wait on the Lord he knows how to put people in places that will be helpful for our children.

Yeah but it’s really hard for all the people who faithfully believed the previous prophet to just make the switch like that. Cuz he always said you should be very proud of being Mormon, be very proud to call yourself Mormon and proud to be a peculiar people. And so many faithful followers took that to heart their whole life. Suddenly the new prophet says it’s not ok to call yourself Mormon. I mean, that’s hard for people, especially when it’s a word that always represented their religion and culture. I understand why they would want to identify the way people always knew them as. Lots of churches have the name Jesus Christ in their name, so it doesn’t stand apart as different as much, which is the point. Previous prophet wanted to be proud to be peculiar. Current prophet probably wants to blend in better with other Christian churches. Probably a public relations strategy to re-brand the institution and avoid being identified by the easily Google-able word Mormon, so that converts don’t get exposed to all the Mormon content online.

No counseling? I know dozens upon dozens of faithful couples that have gone to counseling. The church employs full time qualified counselors, but members are wholly encouraged to see non-lds counselors or psychiatrists if they like. Sometimes, the church will cover the cost if the bishop thinks it’s needed. Over 40 years, my husband and I have seen counselors in and out of the church - all were qualified and helped us through rough patches. Because we are a lay church, bishops are instructed to refer members seeking counseling to qualified professionals - many times ones who have no relationship with the church.

Nan talks a lot about heavenly Father.... In the account of the first vision, JSJ claimed he was shown two "Gods:" the son God (Jesus), and his father God... Which "God" is she referring to when she says heavenly Father: Jesus or the father of Jesus? Thanks4any answers...

God. Jesus and god are two separate “people,” to Mormons. When they say God, they don’t mean Jesus. Unlike actual Christian religions which believe Jesus is also God, Mormons do not.

That’s because none of those had anything to do with god or religion. All the holidays now used in Christian religions were stolen from pagan celebrations to make the transition to Christianity easier for people to swallow.
