Yes, exactly right! When I lived there I got Island fever after about 4 months - then I started surfing, fishing, snorkeling, hiking, and SCUBA Diving and the Island Fever went away.

Great vid, I recently landed a great government job in Hawaii... Logistics Specialist GS11 Step 9. This is after a relentless 3 years of planning, over 200 applications and interviews. For anyone wanting to move to Hawaii from the main land, make sure you do your research and planning to see if you can live in Hawaii. I am originally from Puerto Rico... Born and raised. I understand living in an island. I've been currently living in New York City for 30 years. I am also a service member and have relatives living in Kapolei. I sold my home in NY - will be moving to Oahu in December. 🤙

Thank you very much for this excellent video. I had to slow the playback speed down to 0.75. I live on an island in Australia, but milk doesn't cost $8.00! I understand the island fever, I felt like I was a convict for the first 7 years. I reckon I'd cope with the isolation on Oahu, although it does seem a bit over crowded. The weather looks great! The island fever thing is odd because most people don't leave their county or state for that matter. That's pretty much "island living" in a way. Most people have a daily radius of 50 miles or less; so, is it REALLY island fever? No. It's just a new place. 😎🌴

Moving to Oahu in the next few months. Relocating with my little tribe: my husband (terminally ill); our 44 yo son and our beautiful nearly 4 yo granddaughter and myself (mom, the administrator). I could use some advice on housing et. al. Formerly Alaskan residents for 40+ years. We're outliers from our individual inceptions, anxious to find a quiet haven. This vlog kept me interested in what you had to say. No matter how savvy one thinks himself, a new land requires the help of the local denizens. Thanks, Susan

Hey I’m from Arizona and I’m planning on moving to Hawaii, I’m 18 years old , whst are the best suggestions for as In my first step to arriving and housing and jobs and other things. What’s the first step
@PatrickLongleyOahuRealEstate
@PatrickLongleyOahuRealEstate 3 года назад
Hey Johhny, great question! I would suggest making a budget for yourself to have a few months of reserves while you make connections, find a job, etc. When it comes to housing...either see if you have any friends or get an Airbnb while you shop around for a place. If you are trying to make connections always a good idea to join some kind of "Meet up" whether that is the canoe racing team, a gym with group classes, or something that allows you to meet people if you don't already have some hookups out here. Check out my video discussing tips on moving to hawaii !

great question I would suggest contacting Costco directly. In regards to furniture, the best place to find cheap (good quality stuff) would be on Facebook market place other wise it is difficult to find "IKEA" quality and price stuff like your used to on the mainland.

So basically, at an average home price of $870K, that would equate to an average annual income of around $250K, minimum. However, the average annual income in Oahu is about $70K. So, do the vast majority of residents rent as home purchasing is not even close to being feasible for most people? I currently live in Iowa with about a $200K income working remote. Not even close to being able to buy a home in Hawaii so looks like the corn fields are my prison for life.
@kade_kam_dad

Exactly. Most of the residents live in old home with generations of them cohabiting together. Grandparents Patents and kids live in 3 bedroom old homes so they can afford it.

My last time living an 'extended vacation' on Oahu was '85- then I could rent a nice one bed rm. in Menoa for $350- mo but even then the traffic heading down town was too LA for me! If you can- you might do an Inter-island comparison of the basics you just discovered and a Basic one like below?? i.e. as we here on the Mainland usually just get reports of the earthquakes on the Big island. What is interesting about these is- many of the neighborhoods near where the lava destroyed were just simple inexpensive houses- small plots of land with old farm-like houses where the locals and many Expats were living- CHEAP compared to modern Down-Towns everywhere within the islands and there MANY retirees and 'recluses' on a budget could better Live in HI with- the great weather, sea, sand and whenever they want could just drive down-town!!!!!!! (There are Millions of people like this here on ALL the Mainland countries- US/Canada /E & W Europeans & still more!!!!!!!!!!!!)

You ain't gunna find any apartments under 500k if you want to own. Anything under that is most likely "Leasehold(leased, not owned)," and your Homeowners association fee will be high. Anything under this price point will be in ghetto or low income areas AND will be fixer uppers.
@PatrickLongleyOahuRealEstate
@PatrickLongleyOahuRealEstate 2 года назад
I totally feel you on the pricing and frustration with high prices. The average condo right now across the island is about 450K but there are a few 1 bedrooms in the 300-400 range. I will definitely agree with you though anything below 250K is most likely leasehold.

Patrick: if you actually found a friendly community, I'm happy for you. I was 60 in 2004 when I moved to Hawaii to work on a B. A. in music at UH Manoa (weird, I know). Sometimes when I went in businesses or small restaurants, I would get a look like "What are you doing here?" One time when I was walking in Kaimuki (a neighborhood with few non-locals), a chinese-looking woman gasped when she saw me, like I was somebody dangerous. The only students at UH who were even mildly friendly were those from other places, like Caliifornia, or Samoa. The locals generally ignored me. I realize I was completely out of place there, but it was still surprising how unfriendly many were. It wasn't just me - a white girl wrote an article for the school paper saying that she felt discriminated against. Despite that overall it was a great experience, and the music was fun. I'm sure there are many mainlanders who move to Hawaii and are unaware of any resentment locals may have for them - I'm happy for them, too.

$5 to $7 for breakfast at a restaurant? On Hawaii? That’s cheap af! I live in Southern California and a breakfast at a local eatery here would be more like $10-$15 dollars! As far as milk goes..it’s gross. Don’t drink it. It’s meant for baby cows, and even they stop drinking it as soon as they get teeth! You can get more calcium from Spinach or other leafy greens, cheese, Quinoa, or supplements! You’re welcome! 🍀🌈💚

850k for a single family home and 400k+ for a condo, ouch. So you’re basically working to live but not actually living? There’s so many other places to consider living and affordable, Latin America, Asia, and many places in Europe. If you’re educated, teaching English abroad is a great alternative to consider. Life offers options, it’s up to you to decide what’s worth and what’s not. But slaving to live on a “paradise” island doesn’t seem like a dream to me but it’s all a matter of perspective
@kade_kam_dad

I totally agree. It’s more now for the rich who can afford a million dollar home. Even visiting for two weeks is super expensive. Now with the liberal policies of Hawaii and Sleepy Joe inflation has gone through the roof. Good luck to people who try to move there.

High cost of housing that is usually smaller than mainland homes plus HOA fees are high plus taxes and food and gasoline prices much higher. Hawaii is basically for six figure incomes and the politics of Hawaii is not a plus with government know it all attitude- elevated train boondoggle proves it.

I have tried to find a good reason for Puerto Rico to be like Hawaii a state, but cant. The wealthy will benefit while the average person will become homeless-like just as sadly as my Hawaiian family, not to mention the racial discrimination. Why not seek a closer union with our sister Cuba, not as wealthy as USA but morally richer (all but USA and Israel) are against the abusive blockade/embargo. and that may stimulate the Caribbean nations to do the same ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY like Hawaii once was.
