Aloha everyone!
I decided to put together a video that I thought might help people that are new to Hawaii fit in a little better or at least understand some of the cultural norms a little better. I made a list of some of the things people say and do on the islands from my own personal experience and have adopted myself to varying degrees. Let me know what you think in the comments below if this was helpful, if you agree, or disagree! I like to get your feedback on these topics! :)

Best thing to fit in Hawaii is to just be yourself. Honestly when u try to fit in u just look more foreign lol. It’s ok if your from the mainland or elsewhere just be respectful. Meaning treat it like it’s ur home. E Komo Mai.

eh, you so cool. you fit in ... you even from my ole neighborhood: Kalihi. so cool. I miss Hawaii --was born there and living on da mainland--nyc, 46 years to be exact. thanks for making me remember a place I took for granted in my youth, and fell in love with it only when I moved away from it.

Thanks American Citizen! It's easy to take things for granted, we have to remind ourselves every so often how lucky we are to be where we are or have what we have. I live in Waikiki now but I miss Kalihi, the rain every night always put me right to sleep! Lol thanks for commenting! :)

I know that Mahalo (sp?) means thank you. And I know that Hawaiian Time means..We Get There When We Get There! 💖😻 I also know it's pronounced Havaee

Thanks Tracy! Yea the wind is usually blowing here so makes it a little difficult for good audio. I need to invest in a good mic! :)

I grew up in Kihei and live in California now, and i can tell you that the best way to fit in with the locals...no. The ONLY way to fit in is to be yourself. You don't have to copy what everybody else is doing. Do what you do. Nobody cares if you can't use chopsticks. My grandfather was born and died there and he only used chopsticks to slap us with if we were being idiots at the table. If you get japaneses food with my grandfather, you better get him a fork. And please speak the way you speak. Pidgen is a mish mash of all the languages that live in Hawaii. Speak in a way that's comfortable, because being comfortable is what it means to fit in. Hawaiians love diversity. Don't deprive them of yours. That's all. Aloha.

En Vee thank you for the thoughtful comment! :) The intention of the video was not to tell people not to be themselves. I wouldn't know how not to be myself, personally. You do pick up on certain phrases, words, etc. being immersed in a culture. The video was only meant to help people understand some of those things. Thanks again for commenting En Vee! :)

Can you also lower the volume a tad bit more when talking, that could help.

Thanks for the comment! Did you mean raise the volume a bit? I thought maybe people would have a hard time hearing it with the camera I was using and then being next to traffic it drowned out my voice a little I think. :)

No problem Thomas! Yea, the audio for this wasn't that great. I was walking along a busy roadway and my audio equipment was basically a phone mic, the music probably didn't help lol.

Ahhh.... Born and raised here, Mainland people tryna fit in can nevah fit in. Also ya'll are more like locals if you have hawaiian blood then yessuh you one hawaiian like meh! Can't really fit in just be more RESPECTFUL and chill.

Hey Jennifer, thanks for your comment. Respect was never a problem for me. Speaking as someone that moved here it's kind of intimidating at first trying to adjust to differences in culture. It's never been about changing who I am but learning new things about different cultures. Some people hate me just for making this video about my experiences and you can see them in the comments below. But most people are positive and that's why I make videos like these for those people that can gain something from it and put it towards being a better person. :)
