If I'm not mistaken this SNL with Elliott Gould was the 1st episode of the ill-fated Jean Doumanian era. And with hindsight being 20/20, how funny is the "Heaven's Gate" spot being so self-important?
@tinamarie86
@tinamarie86 4 года назад
You're correct about the SNL episode, it was also the final time Elliott Gould hosted, & the only one of his 6 episodes that I didn't see (I wasn't born in the 70s but I have the first 5 seasons of the show on dvd & saw the first five times he hosted).

"THE TONI TENNILLE SHOW" (her daily attempt at being a female Mike Douglas) was syndicated during the 1980-'81 season [WNBC-TV in New York carried it at 4pm].

Eileen Davidson from the Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives was one of the actors talking about how scary Alligator was in the commercial.

How they got Orson Welles to sober up for that commercial ....is beyond me

Berkshire Place commercial bumper - the sign that SNL was soon over (maybe 1 more sketch) - then - SCTV at 1am!

Nothing weirder than seeing ads for movies that were utter disasters, Heaven's Gate is still considered one of the biggest busts of all time even all these years later.

Am I the only one who thought of that Orson Wells parody they did on Pinky and the Brain when the Paul Masson Burgundy commercial came up?

GASP!!!! ORSON WELLES?! Btw, I've seen the outtakes of this where he sounds wasted. It's great. :D

Johnny Carson did a famous parody on Welles' Paul Masson endorsements on "THE TONIGHT SHOW". The body of it went like this... JOHNNY: (as Orson, holding a glass of wine) "We will sell no wine....before its time." JOHNNY: (as skid row bum in an alley) "IT'S TIME!!!"

The Datsun has not been gone. The company name changed to Nissan in the U.S., that's all.

If not mistaken, these commercials come from the first episode of SNL after Lorne Michaels and the original cast left. So, put it in the context that people watching this were probably very much "what the eff?" while watching this debacle.

Do you think the Paul Masson ad had a blooper reel like 'Frozen Peas'?

Nice to Denny's with ads that aren't obnoxious.

The Boogeyman is underrated, the sequels however are so damn confusing.

Yes, there's a short blooper reel of him being extremely drunk on the set of one of these ads.

Jim Tunney was far from random. He was the most renowned NFL referee in the late 70's to early 80's. It would sort of be like using Ed Hochuli (the ref with the large biceps) in ads today. Not a big name celebrity, but pretty well-known in the sporting world. In fact, I remember Jim Tunney being used as the official judge in the Battle Of The Network Stars shows. He was THAT big during this era!

I think "The Toni Tennille Show" was more or less a talk show format; think her hubby the Captain guested.

Bob EUbanks' (yes, Newlywed Game host Bob Eubanks) company produced the TOni Tenille SHow. It ran only the one syndicated season. His company(Hill-Eubanks productions as in Michael Hill) also produced other short lived shows like All STar Secrets, The Guinness Game, and a Buddy Hackett syndicated revival of You Bet Your LIfe. All those shows lasted a season or less. The 1992-93 dating type show Infatuation also was produced by said company.

Isnt the first video the same company where Orson Welles got really pissed off at them for doing multiple takes after he got drunk? Lol

This isn't nor was it ever a surprise. Orson Wells selling wine was a bit of a joke the whole time he was making the commercials, and in the years since.

Jesus, Toyotas were so damned ugly. Now, some of the more sleek, reliable commuter cars around. Talk about a turn-around.
