What a great volume, with commercials like Seruchi, Clearasil and Jordche fitting the decade to perfection.

I was born on the 12th so it's interesting to see a little snapshot of the world from the week before I was born.

Thanks for keeping in the extra MTV News update about Elton John at the end, waiting the entire volume to see what the VJ was referring to had me in suspense. x)

MTV, before it became the Reality channel. Now it's the Ridiculousness Channel, it seems to be all that's on.

Tim Warneking Tell me about it.They have no credibility anymore the interesting thing is they still keep their logo!

They revived Beavis and Butt-head for a while, and it did get decent ratings. However, it didn't get its core demographic of teen girls, so they canceled it. I can't understand why they call it MTV now anyway!

Now this was back when MTV actually played music videos. I think I was 10 at the time toward the end my 5th grade year about to transition to middle school.

I thought you used to completely omit (Station ID for MTV) from the video and notes. It's almost been 16 years, why do I still get chills when I see the World Trade Center in movies and TV? This was before the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics! I remember those being the first Olympics that I watched, but only as much as I was allowed...I guess the track and field events weren't very popular in my house.

I used to omit MTV from the descriptions back when Viacom was more protective of this stuff and occasionally bullied me with copyright notices, but I actually haven't had any trouble with posting MTV stuff in the past. I figure it's safe now.

Speaking of the Station ID for MTV, sometimes when someone starts a thread about if we actually landed on the moon on a message board I frequent, I'll reply "Yes, we did and again on August 1, 1981!" Then. I will add an animated gif of the Station ID.

It's amazing that Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." only peaked at #110 (bubbling under) on the Billboard charts. The song was all over the place on television ads and was used by ABC for their 1985-86 "you'll love it" theme. Apparently radio stations didn't share the same love for the single.
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 7 лет назад
The slow intro probably killed its chances on radio
@michaelglickman1300
@michaelglickman1300 7 лет назад
And yet those same radio stations were more willing to play "Flashdance... What a Feeling" by Irene Cara, even though it also had a slow intro. Hypocrisy much?
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 7 лет назад
"Flashdance..." doesn't really have an intro in the same vein...it's merely a verse section with a slower tempo that eventually picks up, which is not all that uncommon. The nearly minute long intro to "I Love L.A." has no musical connection to the rest of the song and it would have fared better on the charts with a single edit that excised it. I can understand why a songwriter like Randy Newman wouldn't have gone for that though.

JJ Jackson must know that this is not the original Deep Purple lineup.

I'm always surprised when people are unaware of the Rod Evans-Nick Simper lineup: serious musicians, guitar teachers, folks who should know better. I mean, not only did Purple have three albums under its belt by 1970, but that original lineup recorded the band's biggest commercial hit. I think everybody just assumes that was Ian Gillan singing on "Hush."
