Any idea on root cause on those? There was no sign of heat or damage in the housing, and the components all looked like they had their magic black smoke inside still

JBFromOZ unclear on root cause - marginal cross section on the trace or cold solder joint. Your sensor mention has merit as well. Not to mention thousands of thermal cycles. Some good tutorials on Volvo temp control module and cluster. When we get one it usually requires X-ray to find the real cause. Funny unrelated story - I had to fix the main board on our clothes dryer. Cold solder joint on relay trigger circuit - failed after 5 years. Cleaned soldered months of solid running since.

I was seriously impressed by the state of the bores and bearings after 300,000kms, didn't really even need new bearings, but 100,000kms further down the road, probably regret that decision, so in they went!!

Coat on the solder? Or on the burnt up traces?

On the traces... and the wire..Will help with corrosion as well

This is a manual 80 series petrol 4.2 ltr 1992 or so. Good luck!

The issue here may be the same then? Or there may be a short in your wiring causing damage to the sensor
