can’t believe i discovered this channel while you’re still uploading. came across mike duncan years after he’d completed history of rome. at the pace of culture today, his history is already becoming history lol. there’s something different about experiencing it in real time. while i wait for your next installment i’ve been going through the rest of your catalogue. keeps me company while i paint. thank you

I cant believe that youtube somehow never saw fit to recommend this channel until yesterday, despite the fact that I've been watching every other Roman history adjacent channel for years already. Needless to say i've been digging through these episodes nonstop since i found them. Also Mike Duncan has carried me through literally hundreds of dreary hours working in a warehouse, and for as many times i've listened through History of Rome (at least 4, i'm not joking) I think his finest work comes in his Revolutions podcast.

@@restitvtororbis5330 i found revolutions so tedious! at least the french one. still i drop in a random chapter when HoR gets too repetitive. isn’t it odd? welcome to the rabbit hole, guy’s got some great work on here. Agesilaus has been my favorite so far edit: i suspect this is because the french revolution itself was so tedious. guess you can’t blame mike

nice, as always. i would like you to go back even further, like, before the punic wars. most of us know this marius/sulla/pompei/caesar period pretty well. hit us with somenting we have less knowledge about, like you did with anabasis

32:23-32:26 This was definitely something Sulla had swirling in his head. For all of his tyranny; Sulla legitimately did everything within the letter of the law. The proscriptions were enacted during the time he was bestowed the title of dictator and whilst actively fighting a declared enemy of Rome. Meanwhile, what Pompey asked for was not grounds for bending the law (despite possessing the power to do so) because there was no existential threat to the republic anymore, nor would giving a triumph even *do* anything if there still *were*.

Sulla was the best.

The colors, the music, the celebrations.... it sounds like a Mediterranean 'tour' in a Cilician pirate party boat would be way more fun than a stuffy Roman trireme!

Didn't Sulla give Pompey the moniker "the Great" as a joke?

Hadn't heard that. But Crassus certainly ribbed Pompey. "How big?"
