How do we get Fortune on our side? What are the qualities necessary for daring unthinkable, unspeakable acts? When is it justififable to massacre your enemies? Sulla: A man of contradictions. Enjoyer of dramas and hedonistic pleasures; most successful general of his generation, and one of the greatest of all time. Patriot and champion of the ancient constitution; the Roman responsible for more Roman deaths than perhaps any other man in history. Was Sulla the one who broke the Republic?

My favorite historical figure. It's a shame most people know nothing about him. Thanks dude, you have a new subscriber. No better friend... No worse enemy... Hardcore. The thing that kills me is that we lost his autobiography. What a tragedy. Could you imagine being able to read that?

Try reading Colleen McCullough’s “Masters of Rome” series of books. You’ll love them. Starts about 110BC and ends with Augustus. She is a great novelist and she brings that to bear with historical accuracy the accounts of who did what, when and how. Brings history alive. Masters of Rome series The First Man in Rome (1990) The Grass Crown (1991) Fortune's Favourites (1993) Caesar's Women (1996) Caesar (1997) The October Horse (2002) Antony and Cleopatra (2007)

They need to seriously make TV series on L.C. Sulla Felix! I mean you don’t have to make up a script for this guy, it would be better than any of the mildly historical based series to day.

I am listening to this amazing story for the second time. It’s a lot to process, and very well done. Can someone please let me know if Sulla’s memoirs still exist? I know they are referenced by Plutarch and perhaps others. But I have not been able to track them down myself.

Variations in Earth's Magnetic field as well as Solar Cycles can result in Earth being bombarded by unusual amounts of Cosmic Rays and Electric phenomenon (Carrington Event). Recent scholarship is revealing profound effects in cardiac health and psychological pathology. Scholars today (I wish I was a Grad Student again sometimes- my goodness) are now looking at sudden events like the Peasant Uprising in England, Plague of Justinian or the French Revolution as perhaps driven by Solar phenomenon. Just thought I would toss this out there. Sometimes in history people in one region seem to go nuts.

Ancient Romans pronounced it "Soolya" and not "Sula" It was similar to the modern Spanish consonant /ll/ or "eh-ye" -- only the Romans did not lose the /l/ sound and simply said it as "Sool-ya" which has a much more powerful ring to it than the Anglicized (and boring) "Sula" with its bland "uh" sound

Sulla is one of my favorites, thanks for making this. I've always thought that there were many similarities between Sulla and Augusto Pinochet, of Chile. Yeah, he killed a lot of political enemies, but reasoned that socialism/communism had killed millions of people worldwide and destroyed many countries and didn't want it for his own. And when he thought the job was done, he handed power back to elected officials. Today, Chile has the highest GDP in all of South America, they have the lowest crime and the lowest level of narco-terrorism as well, not to mention the lowest levels of government corruption.
@kynx9r
@kynx9r 7 месяцев назад
What?… pinochet literally transformed chile into a capitalistic nightmare. He privatised everything ruining millions of lives in the process. While his predecessor, who he couped did great reforms but was hated by the rich and didn’t want to be the us‘s puppet.

The problem is Sulla failed. Because he fundamentally misdiagnosed the problem, and created the path of violence that Caesar and his heir used to create the Empire. If anything, he should have forced consuls and praetors to raise armies to guard the capital. Whatever reform, optimate or populare, would have lasted if there was at least an army loyal to the idea of the Republic rather than to their generals.
