86 Eighty Six Part 2 - details you missed from the anime explained! We are given a plethora of symbolism, parallelism, callbacks, and foreshadowing in part II. Warning, anime-only spoilers. Please do not put LN spoilers in the comments.
Eighty-Six Part 2 (episodes 12-21) served as the buildup to the eventual climax in episode 22 and episode 23. Vladilena Milize was missing for most of the season, but for good reason. Shin and Lena's meeting will be covered in my next video.

I loved the video, i cant wait for part 3! I want to point out a detail you missed in the bridge scene for the next part you upload. In episode 20 at 4:32 you can see an overhead view of shin and raiden on the bridge, with the track under shin veering away from the track under raiden showing how shin is trying to pull away from everyone. at 5:10 you can see the same overhead view, but with both tracks going the same direction showing how raidens words are helping to bring shin back to them

One small scene I noticed is that when Shin first met Eugene in the library, Eugene mentions that he didn't come from money and that he was joining the military to support his sister. The camera then pans to their feet, where you can visibly see Shin's polished shoes (probably given to him by the President) facing Eugene's scuffed, unpolished shoes, which highlights their economic differences. Brilliant contrast by A-1/the writers!

I always took the red streak in her hair as a symbolism that she was "different" than the other "Albans". The idea that she willingly added color to her hair and hair being one of the main factors used to judge Alban from "other", "lesser", "non-human" was an act of defiance in the face of a society of likeness, purity, and whiteness. I took the red streak as her saying eff-you to Magnolian society.

That's half of what's I first got from it, along with the recognition of the death perpetrated as a Handler, or the blood of the fallen. I totally missed out of her matching the flag......probably because no other Alba resembled anything the flag meant/looked like.

another subtle detail that Shin's Voice Actor himself revealed regarding the time of Eugene's death that we see Shin hesitate a little before picking up Eugene's locket, and then in the next scene he opens it for Eugene to see. I didn't notice first that he actually wiped the blood off of his hand before touching the locket. SO MUCH DETAILS that we might not even catch but they still put it in.

There are a lot more parallels between Shin and Odin later on, but here is some in the anime that you missed: 1. Shin collects the tags of his fallen comrades into a box, while Odin collects the souls of esteemed warriors into Valhalla. So it could be said that the box of tags is Shin's Valhalla. 2. This one is a bit of a stretch but I'll put it here anyway. Odin has two dogs, Freki and Geri. Freki is Bernholdt's (Shin's sergeant) callsign, and by process of elimination, Geri is Fido.

Aside from the rain scene, I think Shin's mini portrait was progressively crumpling through out the season because Lena were holding onto it the most. Additionally, prior to Raiden shoving Shin to confront him, the rails raiden was aligned to was a straight path, beside it was rails bent/ turned away which was rails aligned with shin. 86 is such an amazing anime. In terms of a LN adaptation, it is arguably the BEST ever. Period. Not only that, but 86 as Ishii’s debut as a director is astounding. I also love how you go over the ED’s as well, with how it changes every episode visually to point out the symbolisms of each episode…not a lot of people talk about this so props to you.

As a French, we cant see a lot of similarity with our history and St Magnolia: -the main city is a copy of Paris - The moto republic "liberté égalité fraternité", like the french one -St Magnolia the heroine of the republic is like Jeanne D'arc, heroic figure but killed after all of this, St Magnolia was killed too (in the LN is explicated)
@CallsignYukiMizuki

Also some nerdy things to point out that not many people will notice; -Both the Republic and the Federacy use NATO symbols, which implies that both sides could potentially had an alliance prior to the events in the show -As with above, in Episode 14 we hear some Giad troops talking about how a 2nd Lieutenant (Shin) is commanding a Battalion (which would typically be led by a Lt. Col / Col). In Episode 15 at about 11:40, we can see a NATO accurate order of battle for the 177th Armored Division. If you look at the 1028EXU, it is in fact a Battalion -During the air drop at Episode 19, two palettes were dropped each containing 7 Feldreß for a total of 14. This is also accurate to how modern armored Companies / Squadron are set up (mainly the US Army and I guess the US Marines before they lost their tanks). 4 vehicles makes a platoon, 3 platoon (12) and a HQ element of 2 makes a Company (14)
@KarlArty
@KarlArty 2 года назад
as an additional point, in one of the episodes, during a shot inside Shin's Reginleive (?), we can see the UI list the remaining ammunition in each weapon. While most other sources simply list the 12.7mm machine guns on the machine as just that, the UI lists them as 12.7mm NATO (as opposed to 12.7 x 108 mm as used in the Soviet DShK, or other names for the same cartridge such as .50 BMG or 12.7 x 99 mm) further strengthening the link with NATO. (This also implies that NATO existed in the 86 universe, but that might be a stretch.)

With all quiet on the western front and, more comedically, french toast existing in the universe it’s seems to me that this is some alt history and set a while in the future, but it’s set in mainland Europe, so while the flags and borders have changed these european predecessors did really exist, and france did by name, so they could’ve easily been symbols inherited from their previously allied nations when the states we currently know succeeded from them.

Here's a detail about Lena's uncle, he's literally her, and in some respects, in a worse position. His rank is Brigadier General. This is a 1-star general. Looking how the real world works, compared to non-flag officers, he has immense power and influence, but when you actually look at the big picture? He literally has no ability to influence national policy or defense strategy. A 1-star general (and most 2-star generals, frankly) may as well be a coffee boy intern when it comes to the real big boy leagues which are dominated by 3- and 4-star generals and civilian leadership. The most he really can do is give Lena some measure of protection from any Colonels and Lt. Colonels who have it out for her. Ironically enough, this is what enables Lena to have enough leeway to act and rally the 86 behind her. But there's nobody higher up looking out for Jerome. The buck stops with him.

This reminded me of a story from long ago. When I first enlisted my supervisor was an older TSgt. We were talking one day and he mentioned when he was in Basic Training he got put on a "helping" duty for a day. Basically, anything anyone needed done. He wound up being the "Coffee guy" for some senior enlisted having a meeting at the HQ building. So while he, a brand new E-0 still in basic training was at the coffee machines filling up everyone's cups and getting the sugar and stuff, a full bird Colonel (0-6, one rank under Brigadier General) walks up to him and starts filling cups too. He talked to the Col. for a few minutes and asked him why he was the one going to go get so many coffees, to which the Colonel replied, "Easy, I'm the lowest ranked guy in the meeting." The military is a weird place.

To me the butterfly resembled shin's mental health/stability, and the ants eating away at it represent the deaths of his comrades that he carries with him, their memories, wishes, etc. They represent shin's gargantuan task and its mental load on him, which slowly eats away at him over time, leading to him breaking. And specifically the **dead** butterfly represented his control, the lack therof, on the burden placed on him and allowed it to chew through whatever remained of him hence the ants. The butterfly had been killed by *ahem* something. Probably shin's brother and the final tipping point was the assumption of lena's death. The head that got blown away at the end might also have represented shin finally losing his shit and going on a rampage seen later in the episode, with that nasty grin. This was my own theory though, tho imo noe that i look at it, it really fits. It can represent a miryad of things. Shin's mental state could very well be one of em but eh, its just my interpretation.

Btw I rewatched episode 4 of season 1(or just episode 4) and noticed when Lena asked Shin about Rei and told her it was his brother, it cuts to a scene where he said "He's my brother" and you can see his mouth moving, but the outline of the mouth from his shadow doesn't move one bit and it scared the life out of me. One piece of symbolism I'd like to point out is in Episode 16, when Shin arrives with reinforcements to the frontlines, he ironically becomes more "machine" than "human" while fighting the Legion. He's had to bury his memories, shed away his emotions, throw away his common sense, and mitigate some of his self-preservation in order to survive and win against the Legion forces. The one thing that snapped him out of his "machine" mode? He heard, remembered, or hallucinated Lena's voice. Through Lena's voice in that moment, she brought Shin back to humanity.

That railway blockade scene was something I didn't thought at first but when you explained from metaphorical perspective it makes sense. 🙏This anime is a hidden gem! So much you can learn from it. Thank you for clearing it up!🙏

86 is a pretty good adaptation. Their screenplay and pacing between scenes differs quite a bit from the LN at times, clearly to create a more cinematic experience with impactful symbolism. It's a really competent way to translate the more detailed descriptions of a written medium into a more visually focused medium. Someone out there clearly really cared about this, which is cool to see.

I am not a fan of mecha but I have to say 86 is my most favorite anime! I have never seen an anime go this deep into details... I have no clue why this is not getting further seasons! sadly the manga was stopped too.. I have started light novels..

@12:40 IIRC the OST "The Answer" was never played at all in Cour 2 even with all the fighting of Nordlicht squad. It only played whenever Lena was there supporting Shin and also only in this scene, which also ties into Fredirica's question for Shin, Lena's survival being his "Answer" for living.

86 felt like I was reliving the feeling of watching AOT, but a little subtle. It's all the shinzo, all the feeling and not to mention all the hype that keeps me at the edge of my seat.

Another thing i noticed is, when the squad is talking about their future, Shin is standing far away from the rest. He is the only one standing next to his Juggernaut, symbolising how he can't see a future ahead, only war
