Thank you for this video I live in a apartment building. Someone has been stealing catalytic converters. I have a 1988 GMC Sierra truck and I've been driving it for 11 years. I like what you said about taking the converter out and putting a pipe in. I love my truck and I'm doing everything to keep her in shape. When I was a teenager my dad taught me how to work on the top of the motor.
@@wilburdavidchevy the only O2 sensors an 87 will have are the primaries, basically upstream of the catalytic converter, there's no sensors monitoring the converter so it won't know you removed it, except for the added flow
Thanks Bro, I'm need to do this. just Had to dump $4800 into my 99 Yukon for a rebuilt engine, yea, tough decision. The mechanic is great, (Urgent Auto Care, Lincoln Nebraska) We agree that the the lack of power on the high end is poor because of the cat converter. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
I've got a 92 with true duals and no cats, but only one O² sensor just above the collector on the driver's side header. What did you do about the O² sensor? Mine didn't have one for the longest, so I put one in and it seemed to run better, until yesterday. So i'm wondering if yours runs better without it
Now days they are really over done with censors and emissions crap. This used to be the number one problem as far as hp loss. Now days with the info and years of R&D they can make cars with more power less emissions and pretty good fuel mileage. Pretty remarkable that all the dogs of the 80's and 90's made for great power and better fuel mileage for todays cars. In 1985 if you told me a v6 with 26 mpg would make 310 hp I'd say you were smoking crack. My old 99 Tahoe Vortec 5.7 minus egr and cats. I added an lt4 hotcam with new ported heads and larger stainless valves. Much better exhaust and intake mods, will easily produce 375 hp at the wheels with better mpg. These vehicles are so restricted that they actually hurt themselves. Ls motors are different and have been tuned to run cleaner while producing more power. They have been detuned for reliability and longevity. Longevity will be better though with a more open tuned motor that breathes better. It just wouldn't meet California regulations.
Planning on doing this to my 1989 GMC k2500. Hopefully it'll help her breathe a little and help with the longevity (of the already looooong lifespan) of its engine.
While all of that is very true. I still need to get my truck to pass smog. Is it gonna pass smog with the straight pipe or do I need to replace the catalytic? I have the exact same track but a 94 and I haven’t been able to pass smog for years and I’m tired of paying hundreds of dollars to get it passed under the table.
Ive got a 93 chevy cheyenne with a 4.3v6 and truck coughs and sputters in highway like starving for fuel but let off accellerator and it goes. Think my cat converter clogging up and making truck miss. Great vid bud and love the truck
All you gotta do is cut the cat out and leave whatever o2 sensors you have alone. Put in a peice of pipe and done. I have cut the cat out of a 98 and a 94. Neither have had any issues. And no check engine light. THESE TRUCKS DO NOT CARE IF THEY HAVE A CAT OR NOT. Just leave the o2 sensors alone and it will run fine.
Did you cut behind the converter and bust it out rewelding it back together or cut off replacing with straight pipe and leaving o2 sensor plugs hanging? I have a 98 5.0 and it’s too quiet, wanting to replace or remove muffler
@@dentondunn4346 none of my exhausts are stock anymore but you can remove the cat and weld in pipe, and leave the o2s in their bungs where they are supposed to be. I never said to leave anything hanging. They will be hooked up exactly how they are stock but you just remove the cat and add in pipe. Simple. Dont make it more complicated than it needs.
@@brycelovell6984 I did exactly that but still haven’t changed muffler, looking for the sound I like without too much cabin noise. You have a suggestion as what muffler sounds best on a 98 C/K 1500 5.0 5sp 4wd
You won’t get a CEL on 95 and earlier trucks. No sensor means Nothing monitoring the catalytic converter function, thus no CEL. 1996 and later will throw a CEL light.
I bought an 89 Chevy 1500 and done replaced the injectors and a new tune up and it still loses power and all that’s left I guess is the 89 catalytic converter and once I remove it I should have the power of a 350 ?
Here is a forum link that has factory service manuals from 88-95. I would suggest saving them to your computer in case a dl link goes down. I think you'll find what you need with those. www. gmt400. com/threads/88-95-service-manuals.43575/
I know this video is older but I’m t thinking of doing this to my 91 Silverado just curious if you had any issues later on after doing this or if it’s still doing great.
Ill take a half decent old chevy over a brand new Ford ANY day that's for damn sure. I own a 2012 haundai sonata and my 1970 c10 is STILL my most reliable vehicle lol. Not even kidding.
Im thinking mine has a issue. Ive changed every sensor on the engine. Even rotor/ cap/coil. Fuel pump/relay/filter new as well. It bogs out when i go uphill like it wants to cut off but it doesn't. Its original (88) so im sure this is my issue im chasing.
This won't work for some of these trucks. I have a 96 GMC Sierra Z71 and it has 2 catalytic converters and they have oxygen sensors before and after them. Looks like I'm going to have to actually replace my clogged catalytic converters rather than cut them off.
Nick Van Leuven Bushcraft wait wait wait theres a way around that and I think theyre called spark plug extender's or something that you can use to trick the sensors. Let me find out.
Having a 96 tuned is problematic, but you can use spark plug antifoulers, and drill it out to fit your post cat O2 sensor. Spacing it out from the main flow of the pipe will fool the ecu into believing the cat is there and functioning.
I'm debating how I can go about installing an electric exhaust cutout before my cat on my 95. Then I'll go see if a muffler shop will let me have a newer Chevrolet muffler they cut off because the owner wants to upgrade to something louder and have that installed. Boom best of both worlds it can be quite when you flip a switch or you can open the cutoff and be loud and obnoxious ...
CC burns off pollutants. It gets clogged when your engine isn't running right or if it's leaking something, causing power loss. It does it's job pretty well. It also makes an exhaust system sound better with the right muffler.
What you can do is, pull out the pipe that has the cat on it and hollow out your cat. Then put the pipe back in. You'll have a free flowing pipe but it'll still look like you have a cat
There is a "delete" that you can do with resistors and a little soldering that will tell your computer that they are functioning.... never done it personally, but friends of mine have. There are vids and schematics all over the internet.
I have a 2011 sonata 2.0 t and it has sensors but I can’t get anyone to help me straight pipe it lol it has sensors but all you have to do is get the spark plug non foulers but I think I have to weld those on too…
Im all for gettin rid of that restrictive crap but you do realize its a federal law and the vehicle can be impounded if caught running without cats where they are required. A hefty fine is also set at 5k in most states so is it really worth it?
Gettr Dun ok thanks just had my exhaust leak fixed and now I’m getting the same check engine light on after awhile driving I think it’s the catalic converter being clogged engine feels like it has lost power a bit when the check eng light turns on I was thinking just putting straight pipes or cleaning the converter what you think?
Gettr Dun great!! So I'm still learning a lot of the mechanics aspect. Guess i just wasted 400 bucks from having my o2 sensors replaced only to find out the cat is the real problem!! Thanks for the help.
A cat is not a filter, the ceramics and precious metals act as a catalyst for oxides of nitrogen, catalyzing them into less harmful gasses. Now I agree on older engines the removal of the cat will be beneficial but not putting the o2 sensor back in and getting it to work correctly will hurt your fuel economy and power because that sensor tells the computer if the engine is running lean or rich.
I'm well aware of what a catalytic converter does, but let me get this straight. The catalytic converter is a "filter" for your exhaust. So if its a "filter " like the one that your truck uses on your carb wouldn't that filter get clogged up with time and eventually have to replace because of all the crap is filtering out. So wouldn't a catalytic converter/"filter" be doing the same thing for the gases that go out into our atmosphere? Now think about that, if everyone does the same thing and takes off their converters does that mean when there is so much of those gases in the air we would just replace the air in our atmosphere just like an air filter 🤔🤷🏽♂️
I agree that this is a terrible idea for the environment because of the contribution it makes to air pollution, but this is a handy fix for people like me who had their catalytic converter stolen off of their truck by a damn crackhead! I don't have $1,000+ to replace it tho which is what brings me to this video :)
A catalytic converter is NOT a filter. It is what the name implies, a converter. It converts hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide air polluting gases into carbon dioxide and water.
What about when assholes keep stealing them? like mine while I was at work mind you. I gauruntee the environment will be fine with a few less converters that fuckers cut off and damage your property
