A thing you missed regarding battle passes is that 343 doesnt build upon FOMO in that case. You can buy any old battle pass and level it up which is great. It should be industry standard in my opinion to just go back and level another battle pass because you like the cosmetics more. I dont know if the grind is still crazy because im not playing Infinite at the moment but this retroactive battle pass thing doesnt get talked about enough. If they add this in Destiny i would be soooooo happy, since i got burned out the last seasons but i would love to get the cosmetics at a future point.

@stuperman117
@stuperman117 10 месяцев назад
If we are stuck with battlepasses as an unfortunate industry standard for whatever reason, 343 has set the bar, somehow, as the best for *what* a battlepass should do. At least, 'not expiring' part. You still have to pay to get them, but the fact that they don't disappear into the ether is wonderful. And once the time for them to be earned towards, for free, is gone, it will still exist, same with the operations, the old mini-events that infinite had. For 500 credits for Operations? You get *unique* item, which could be anything really, and the Operations pass extra challenge per match unlock, as well as ensuring that if you miss out on the event, it's just.. *not gone*, you're still able to grind it out. And it's the same thing for the Battlepasses. Seriously, if you happen to have a life, or shit hits you hard for whatever reason, and you're unable to play for the duration of the event, the fact that it'll still be there, waiting, or if you are late into the game's lifecycle? I agree, this has to be the standard of what Battlepasses and their ilk have to be. Not whatever Fortnite's is, which plagues video games, wherever I look.. I'm just so fuckin sick of it.

I'll tell you exactly why Infinite feels like it has fewer weapons: 343 was too committed to balancing absolutely everything for multiplayer, especially for basic multiplayer combat. When that happens, weapon variety *in practice* decreases quite a bit, because basic multiplayer combat is a limited scope and does not leave a great deal of room for weapon gimmicks. Halo 3 had the Mauler. And it was okay with having the Mauler. 343 would not be okay with having the Mauler.
@royshavrick
@royshavrick 10 месяцев назад
What are you waffling about when the heatwave exists in this game? Wacky weapons would totally still work.
@Jormyyy
@Jormyyy 10 месяцев назад
And yet the mauler and spikers are nigh useless when compared to other weapons that do the same thing but better. And God forbid you try to use the AR in 3 against literally anything outside a 5 foot range. I'd prefer a smaller sandbox with unique weapons than redundant reskins of other weapons. Halo does not need a beam rifle AND a sniper rifle (also seriously bungie the best y'all could come up with for a covenant sniper weap, was just to make another sniper rifle??) So Infinite doesn't need a beam rifle or a covie carbine when it already has a sniper rifle and the stalker rifle, as well as the battle rifle and commando. Is the sandbox missing some niches and could use even more unique weapons? Sure. A single pickup "duel" weapon like SMGs would be neat.
@danielbob2628
@danielbob2628 10 месяцев назад
@rishavroy1814 By Halo standards, the Heatwave isn't wacky. In practice, it's just one tall, slow-moving projectile with a quick killtime. You can't pull off anything special with that. And if you try to use it in any other way, you won't be able to pull off anything at all. Scattershot at least had range play beyond 'the projectile moves slow.'
@Jormyyy
@Jormyyy 10 месяцев назад
@danielbob2628 you can use it to ricochet off walls AND alt fire to change the direction/ speed of the shots. No other Halo weapon has ever had this as it's core function. That right there is what makes the heatwave so unqieu and fun. Sure you can be basic and use it like a poor man's shotgun, or you can use it to its full potential and bank shots around doors and hallways to score kills.
@danielbob2628

The thing about SBMM is that it's more noticeable when you start playing more. No matter how well you play, you will be forced to play with really bad players while the enemy team is completely full onyx rank players. Exceeding expectations makes the SBMM worse, the game thinks you WILL perform like that every round, making things even harder

one thing not mentioned but that im really glad theyve added, is that in custom games and some matchmaking playlists you can use the campaign variant versions of weapons. some of these are absolutely insane and make some useless/average weapons into absolute powerhouses (calcine disruptor and arcane sentinal beam for example). it definitely helps add to the weapon variety in those game modes

24:10 Halo 3 and Reach solved the SBMM issue by tuning it to different degrees depending on what you were playing. Social modes were very lossened to non-existant SBMM. While ranked modes were more strict. But even then, it was never as strict as modern games. Nobody said the existence of SBMM is an issue. It's when it's tuned to absolute sweet fest absurdity that's the issue. If modern shooters want to fix it, look how older Halo, Cod, and other FPS games did it.

I like loose SBMM because I get matched with people closer to my level where MY impact matters more. Most veterans dislike SBMM because they want those relaxing games where they dunk on hapless noobs, like me. Getting into 10 random games over the course of a day and each one has half the enemy team being veteran/pro players that proceed to get 125 of the 150 score needed to win and me and my team have 30 score? *Yeah, screw that.*

Would be interesting if they added the fuel rod, but slightly toned down it's direct damage and gave it the tracking feature AI had while using it in some campaigns, most notable in 2/3. Thus making it more of a suppression/area of denial tool by direct, overwhelming fire in a Line of Sight. I enjoyed it being one shot one kill and all, but it has very little counters at close range and had very high kill potential that at short to medium range had little counterplay. That said, there was a model for it in Infinite, so it may return.

15:33 The main issue with the Halo 3 maps is that almost all Halo 3 weapons were projectile based, meaning that it was incredibly hard to cross-map with BRs due to the fact you had to lead the shot and be dead on with your leading since there was no aim assist at beyond red reticle range. Map makers knew this and made their maps with this in mind. In Halo infinite, a lot of the weapons seem to be either hitscan or extremely fast projectiles that are effectively hitscan. Making cross-map kills with precision weapons much easier. This is why most of the Halo 3 maps feel off. Maybe this is a hot take, but I think all precision weapons that aren't in the sniper role should be projectile based.
@ShawFujikawa
@ShawFujikawa 10 месяцев назад
Bullet weapons (aside from sniper) have always technically been projectiles in Halo, they’re just much slower in H3. Weapons have never had aim assist outside of their red reticle range in any Halo game though, Infinite included.

Very interesting to hear the explanation about SBMM. It's why I stopped playing Apex, as much as I enjoyed that game. I remember coming back after a season or two of skipping it, getting a couple of wins, and then all of a sudden the next Champion squad was three Apex Predators. It's why I'm interested in Ubisoft's XDefiant, when that eventually comes out, as the devs have said the game will have no SBMM whatsoever.

i think when you end up being competitive at something, especially after years of it, when you try to play something "casually" you are still not really playing casually. This is because muscle memory is a thing, Thought processes change at higher ranks, so on and so forth. In so many games i play when playing unranked i can clearly see some high tier tactics or very optimal combos and stuff because it is just ingrained in a person to do this after so many years of doing so. I just wished that the higher skilled people would stay up there over loosing a lot then going back down and creaming everybody so that need to be fixed. Lots of bias here obviously but i just wanna play with other scrubs like me over highly skilled people that wanna play "casually"
@alexfrost2799
@alexfrost2799 10 месяцев назад
This seems like a problem with a lot of older franchises. When a game gets old enough, the players develop muscle memory. It's why it seems like there's a ton of sweats in games like Halo or COD. There have been enough games out that if you've played any amount of time with previous titles, you automatically have more knowledge than the person just starting. And it becomes a reflex to see things newer or less observant don't and subconsciously optimize your playstyle that makes you better, even if it doesn't feel like it, things like noob comboing, ghandi-hopping, strongsiding, and pre-fragging.

I still think they should give a universal armor coating every primary rank-up (bronze to silver, etc.) I also think that the weekly challenge rewards need more or just better. Also, the armor cores do have a nice detail that they have different style prosthetics. That feels worth it to me keeping the cores, and just making the pieces cross core. They also kinda act like saves for armors.
@stuperman117
@stuperman117 10 месяцев назад
I'm in a mixed bag when it comes to the cores. On one hand, the style each core has is fuckin good, from the Mk VII (Newest generation of the armor all spartans can wear) being this ultra sleek, next gen, armored warrior, the cutting edge of all the knowledge humanity has gotten from all previous power armors. Mk V(B), for all of those who have the concept of their particular spartan having grown up not seeing just the Chief, but rather, the spartans that rocked more of what was seen on Reach? With a few.. Extra additions (I'm oddly a fan of the new stuff they've been adding to it, to a degree) Rakshasa, when you have to go out in the field and using your own skills, everything and the kitchen sink to do your job where there's practically no support. Mirage, Semi Powered Infiltration armor? Dude, it's the middle ground between proper power armor and what Rakshasa is, and it looks damn fuckin good for it. Hazmat, for when even spartans need that extra hazardous protection.. need I say more? Even the Fractures stuff has its aesthetic! Chimera, this melding of AI and flesh! Uniquely human and yet alien, with the prosthetics being just bones. Yoroi, the truest form of the weebs dreams from Halo 3, made reality Eaglestrike, a what if Halo was in the trenches of WW1. And man, does its bulkiness just.. Hoo. But at the same time, the fact that its so inbaked into everything, and it's taking so long to bring out 'cross core' stuff? We just got helmets, and man, there's so much good combos I've seen so far because of it? ANd yet, there's still so much more, because now people are really thirsting for it, I'm all for it, absolutely. I'm also afraid of seeing each core lose their identity. Each one, from the way the armor is, the tech suit underneath the armor, the prosthetics.. I'm worried. Not entirely sure why, because it's so flawed, but it's something that I feel, to a degree works.

The most reasonable and educational SBMM conversation I've heard in a while. My playstyles normally revolve around helping my allies rather than personal glory, and assisting my team into having an easier time with SBMM is usually an exotic gaming experience. If anyone's struggling with SBMM, try using niche/supportive stuff in your games. it'll take you "Skill" down without you deliberately throwing and having a backup game plan when you're just not confident in your basic skills is comforting.

When you pick it up it immediately FEELS like the halo 2 pistol: quiet, piddly, and a giant step down in power from the CE pistol. Now the sidekick is way better than 2's pistol, it having a good ttk is evidence of that, but it shows just how important good sound, visual, and tactile design of weapons in games can be. Its a great weapon, but it feels like a shitty sidearm upon first use so most casual people drop it and hate it. If it had a more crunchy report id wager itd be more popular

SBMM is why I refuse to even think about playing FPS PVP games anymore. I'm just the epitome of "aggressive mediocrity" at FPS games, I'm okay in some situations, but I'll be basically the dead weight on the team when it gets to a situation I'm not the best in, which makes the game harder on everyone else. That's not fun for me to just be carried like luggage, and its not fun for the person carrying me. Therefore, just...no more FPS PVP for me anymore. I agree with your overall sentiment that the weapon sandbox feels like it could use something more, but I think what I'd like to see it get is 1-2 more "weird" weapons. The new weapons they added are mostly very buttoned down and conservative in design, probably because they were painstakingly balanced for competitive play. I'd like to see a new weapon or two in the vein of the Needler. Shouting out the Forerunner weapons in Halo 4 and 5 is surprising, because a lot of people hated them precisely for what you said about Infinite's sandbox - they fulfilled archetypes already filled by existing weapons, and felt superfluous.

Not all helmets are cross-core. There are a few they have forgotten like the Zvezda I bought when Infinite launched, a few others too I've noticed that are now locked in "archive." But for the most part the helmets are cross-core. I wish it would be expanded to other armor modifications as well, with the exception of some items (Fracture frames should keep their exclusives to their armor set as its supposed to be a themed core in the first place)

9:20 I think the issue is that the game lacks a general Covenant precision weapon. The Stalker rifle is supposed to be the sniper equivalent for the covenant. It makes the precision weapons feel samey when they are all UNSC based.

The thing is with skill based match making, whenever you are asking for a relaxed match, you are basically asking to be put against worse players than you that you can destroy to relax. (Which is obviously bad for those players which will feel like all their games are the super high intensity game you want to avoid)
@alexfrost2799
@alexfrost2799 10 месяцев назад
And there in lies the problem. I know nobody mentions it, but nobody wants to get stomped all the time. That's how you lose players fast. People want to pretend they're good at something without testing themselves in ranked to see how good they actually are. It's this whole 'bragging rights without any source' sort of vibe. When somebody goes 'I miss the days where I got a nuke every other game', they were pretty much *always* in bad lobbies because the system never paired them against anyone better. I bet those players who got nuked several times in a row never went back to the game, calling it trash. The players who want the old days back don't want a relaxing game, they want a game where they can stomp over the entire enemy team without trying. The one person has fun while the entire enemy team (4-12 players depending on the FPS) is not.

I feel like this assumes a lot of different things about who you're matching with and what the games are like, though. I mean, you're not strictly going to do worse just because you're chilling out, just like you won't strictly do better because you're taking things seriously. That's not even factoring in luck, solos vs teams, or what a player wants out of their game either.

Quite the interesting video, dude! IMO, terms of weapons lacking "variety" I think the difference between Infinite and Older games is that Infinite is more careful with how structured its weapons sandbox is I mean sure, older games had a flashier variety of different weapons, but in actual gameplay they tended to get overshadowed by less than 5 specific weapons - usually some precision weapon of some kind and weapons that enable it alongside power weapons in Infinite all the weapons have a niche even if they fall into similar categories - Bulldog is solid close up damage but suffers at range, Heatwave can do ranged "shotgun" pellet bursts and farther spreads that both bounce and pass through targets, but the travel time and slower ttk means they play different in different ways and most importantly dont render one another useless. The same applies to all the pistols (even plasma pistol, surprisingly), the automatics, snipers, etc. But because of this the weapons themselves are less distinct - they dont look cool first, play good after, its the inverse. So even tho there's roughly the same amount of faction visual styles in game (UNSC, Forerunner (heatave, sentinel, cindershot), Banished, Covenant) they dont feel as different Personally its hard for me to say that this is a bad thing - I personally prefer Infinite's sandbox over previous games. I genuinely feels like I can literally pick up anything off the floor and do well with it unlike older games, and I notice I get killed by a wider variety of weapons too. I think the real Killer then is perhaps map weapon availability - weapon spawns are tied to certain respawn points which are roughly equivalent (weapon category wise) but alot only show up on one side of the map or the other. Because of this, even if a map had every weapon on it with multiple spawns, you might only see half or less of them unless you get your spawns flipped. Its the same with the whole vehicle spawning thing but with weapons. It has its pros and cons but definitely I feel is what is contributing to the point you made earlier
@MadmanEpic
@MadmanEpic 10 месяцев назад
In in a similar boat. For as theoretically varied as the Halo 3 and Reach sandboxes are, 95% of the time there's no reason to use anything but the BR or DMR unless you have a power weapon, so they sure don't _feel_ varied.

@starsilverinfinity 10 месяцев назад
@@MadmanEpic Yeah exactly - in like 99% of my aggregated time playing older Halo games when I die to something that isnt a vehicle, its either a power weapon or a precision weapon, and for the latter two categories its almost always the UNSC variant I love all the weapons in older games but when I have to try and actually win and am not messing around in a party game you tend to get bottlenecked to like 1-2 normal weapons and then the power weapons and such

My problem with SBMM is that you either need to always play at 100% if you want to keep up and have fun, or you need to be completely relaxed and just fuck around. There is no inbetween and bad players wont get better because they will have a good game or two and they are feeling better, but then they are forced to play against max level sweatband users who demolish them without contest. I think that was a big problem with MWII because you were stuck playing against tryhards constantly so they countered by playing broken meta loadouts like the Kastov 74u or any shotgun while ratting in corners.

There's too few gimmicky weapons is the issue. Fuck, Reach had the Grenade Launcher - bouncy EMP or direct explosive, the Concussion Rifle - a semi-auto plasma grenade lobber, the Plasma Grenade Launcher - more like a lock-on plasma torpedo launcher, the Focus Rifle and Sniper Rifle not directly competing, the Needle Rifle being a semi-hybrid and having the blamite explosion, they each had considerable difference to purpose, and not human combat rifle that shoots bullets from a capacitous magazine, human combat rifle that shoots bullets from a capacitous magazine, human combat rifle that shoots bullets from a capacitous magazine It's like how the Brutes have the Skewer instead of another basic sniper rifle. Or the Ravager with its plasma puddle.
@WWFanatic0
@WWFanatic0 10 месяцев назад
In Halo 3 the weapons felt distinct. When you have the BR, Commando, and now DMR...you've got 3 guns that are supposed to be your mid range weapon where you break shields and finish with a headshot (all with a human aesthetic to boot). You can argue there's 4 given the Magnum, but that's at least visually different. Then you have the stalker rifle which is basically the same thing just slightly tweaked and an alien aesthetic. Weapons like the Ravager feel like a pain to use unless you spent a decent amount of time learning its quirks. We have two, weaker shotguns that cannot one shot with that satisfying boomstick feel. Oh I hit you with two shells and finish you with a melee? That's not the Halo shotgun feel. The disruptor weapons feel like they were anti-vehicle first and foremost and then given a quirk to make them kind off good against personnel, but in an unintuitive way (shock rifle is a "burst one shot" and the pistol has a bleed effect if you stack enough shots). The mangler was just a camp to one tap+melee weapon prior to its changes. Now I'm a boomer, so much so that I think 3 was the zenith and the DMR is bad for Halo (it's too good in too many situations and makes the BR struggle in its niche) so take this with that disclaimer. It really feels like a lot of Infinite's weapons are clutter more than anything else. Weapons in Halo 3 at least felt fun even if they weren't meta and were generally intuitive. So many weapons in Infinite have quirks or unintuitive design (e.g. ravager has a spike but isn't something you fight in close spaces with) that it feels easy to use them wrong. Others just don't have a real niche to fill and makes the space feel cluttered with junk, not full of choices.

The description of SBMM was so spot on. People that used it as a scapegoat for them being bad make it impossible to start an actual discussion about it's downsides without someone just assuming you're "mad cuz bad". As someone who has regularly played COD MP these last few years, it's just not fun when you do well for a match or 2, and then suddenly you get dropped into a lobby full of sweats that are playing the game like it's ranked. SBMM should really just be enforced in Ranked, and maybe implemented a bit lighter in casual game modes

@leadpaintchips9461 10 месяцев назад
Everyone loves to dunk on SBMM, but off of my own experiences it's better then the alternatives, and even at it's poorest it's on par with a 'free for all' matchmaker. SBMM is worse for the outliers (the very good or the very bad), but a SBMM that has minor changes to the player's rank in it's ranking system and a narrower MM zone is significantly better for the average casual player. Most games that I've played though don't go for quality MM games though, they're aiming at getting players as fast into games as possible, because of how negative the perception is having a longer matchmaking queue is (cue 'dead game' memes for matchmaking taking longer then 20 seconds).

Infinite is 343's best attempt at modernising Halo's gameplay thus far, but that's not saying much, especially when it still gets so much wrong. -Sprint doesn't belong in Halo, period. Nerfing the mechanic to being >9% increase of base movement speed as to not fuck with gameplay too much is an admission of this fact. -Zoom on every single weapon, regardless of their role in the sanbox, promotes long range spam. -Every weapon having a headshot multiplier regardless of whether or not it rewards aim is a dumb mechanic and contributes to the overly sweaty nature of gunfights/matches overall. -The assault rifle and battle rifle being too effective for how easy they are to use. -The sidekick promoting a spammy, sweaty playstyle through it's firerate, reload speed and bloom mechanics. -Bloom in general being featured in the game despite it being nothing but detrimental to the integrity of any Halo game it's featured in. -Too many weapons filling the same role in the sanbox with no meaningful differences (BR, bandit, bandit evo, commando, stalker rifle). -Too many weapons being useless or too niche to be meaningful additions (disruptor, ravager, pulse carbine). -The bizzare weapon class system dictating what properties a weapon can have based on it's damage type and not its role e.g: all low-mid tier UNSC weapons are magazine based, all hardlight weapons are sequentially loaded (this is why we got the bulldog and not the OG shotgun), all plasma weapons are battery based (which isn't even distinct from magazine based weapons anymore seen as you can pick up charge off of weapons in the environment and the obnoxious self-cooling times of guns force you to vent them rather than pace your shots) and shock damage, afforded to hitscan weapons with very little ability to dodge, exclusively given the ability to slow enemy player's movement and EMP vehicles for no good reason.

I love the Sidekic, and while I agree it's a bit too strong, rather than nerf the damage and/or RoF I think increasing the max bloom and bloom per shot would help reign it in. Let people spam at close range - but risk missing shots and/or the final headshot due to larger bloom, or force them to temper their trigger finger to ensure accuracy at medium range.

"A lot of the promethian weapons had a unique feel to them, or a niche usecase" No, Bricky, No they didnt. That was their entire issue. They were literal functional copies of other existing weapons. I think the reason why it feels like we have fewer weapons is is because in halo 5 each weapon have a couple of variations for each one plus they also had the promethean weapons as well. Even they im pretty sure infinite has more weapons then 5 theres not much sense variety in every gun fight. We know that the enemy is gonna have a only a couple weapons to choose from so we can “plan” accordingly but in 5 there was no planning for a explosive saw or the blackhole plasma pistol.

Maybe it's the nostalgia, but what I wouldn't give to have Reach's progression again. It was the perfect combination of XP being the currency to unlocking the cosmetics you wanted and being able to ignore the ones you didn't. It also provided the "look at my accomplishments" by showing off your armor effects or the higher tier armor and, of course, the ranks. When you saw those Inheritors or even Novas in your game, you knew it was going to be a good fight. Or they were so dogshit, you could laugh at how bad they are for how much time they've put into the game. It's a system we won't ever see again in a modern FPS from these bigger companies, and I've come to accept that. But maybe it could pop up again at some point.

@silasstryder
@silasstryder 10 месяцев назад
I never ever understood SBMM in casual game modes. It's supposed to be a toss up on if the randos on your team are good or not and besides developers already figured this out by balancing ranks of the group of people already selected for the match rather than hand picking players for the match altogether based on their skill level. Yes occasionally you'll have people with a low rank that're really good and that ONE match might feel a little unbalanced, but that is far better than being "rewarded" for being good at the game by always getting matched up with noobs who make it feel impossible to win. Besides I always had a lot of fun when a clan was all in one group on one team so we got all of the good randos on our team and I get some really great team play organically without even talking to any of them Developers now seem to think everyone wants a near draw win, but we want the variety, we want to know any match we could kick butt or be on the receiving end and have to overcome as long as it's actually a balance of the experiences rather than hard mode 100% of the time. I mean think of it from a new player's perspective, I remember how great it felt first getting good at Halo and having a real noticeable difference in matches and i was able to push us forward to win more and more on average, but now a nooby has to sweat and grind to get competent, but due to SBMM they're still going to struggle just as much if not more and they'll never get that feeling of progression and accomplishment. Have these developers never heard of dynamic difficulty and how it's a double edged sword? On the positive if done right it can make the game stay as close as possible to that challenge sweet spot where you have to properly engage with the game to succeed, but you're not feeling overwhelmed and get burnt out. On the negative if it's tweaked to always be too hard it feels like no matter what you do you'll never actually get better as a player which is where SBMM is at right now
@PhoenicopterusR
@PhoenicopterusR 10 месяцев назад
There's really no winning between SBMM or full rando, because people like to say they want variety, but that variety offers the full chance that you get stomped the majority of your matches every day you play (most people don't like that), whereas if you draw players towards 50/50, then there's at least a guarantee that you're getting to play meaningful games more often than not. However, that's not what all players want, so in the end it doesn't matter because someone is going to hate it regardless.

I generally suck at most games I play but I don't want SBMM to hold my hand. If I get good at a game I want to earn it.

18:52. Avoid this problem by quitting after your first win or loss. You are MUCH more likely to be put in an unbalanced match in your favor so you keep playing and potentially spend money on the store.

I agree with the SMBB stuff. With the game since launch clocking over 300 hours until this year when I had to stop for months at a time for university. When I came back this season, I wanted to make up for lost time in my battle pass, and that highlighted how intense SBMM is and how it feels you get punished for being above average by being given the most blatantly unbalanced matches where you have to sweat your absolute balls off to have a chance to win. I'll admit part of it is because the way I approach the game has shifted since I have limited time to play, but it just made me all the more irritated by modern games having daily login rewards because it works "for player retention". I feel now like I'm logging on as a chore rather than to play simply for pure fun, again because now of a time constraint to finish my battle pass. At least they don't expire, which is fantastic.
