@balla according to Depco standard engine specifications, a detroit diesel 12v71 makes 475 horsepower in naturally aspirated form, and 550 horsepower in turbocharged form. an 8v92, however, makes only 370 horsepower naturally aspirated, and 430 horsepower turbocharged. the 8v92, however, is over 700 pounds lighter than the 12v71. i wouldn't trust the power ratings much though, as you can find many 500hp 8v92s, and some 700+hp 8v92s, primarily in marine applications. the 92 series was a replacement for the 71 series, so you can likely see many gains in the economy and reliability of a 92 from a 71. however, i'm just a kid who researches old diesels. i have no real hands-on knowledge of these things.
+Cobalt “Robert” Lukather Stout for a little 12 liter engine. 8V92TA 450 hp 9G90 injector @ 1165 lb/tq @ 1650 rpm 8V92TA 500 hp 9G00 injector @ 1325 lb/tq @ 1700 rpm 1987 Silver 8V92TA stock 475 hp w/9G90S @ 1330 lb.ft. at 1300 RPM - in them years the Silver 892 was the Grizzly. Today there is the Lion - Latest Scania V-8 (16 liter) 730hp (1990 lb/tq) @ 1900 rpms and 2685 lb/tq @ 1300 rpm. (487hp @ 1000 rpms)...unreal ! I hope someday you get to drive a truck with an 8v92 in it - its a joy.
+Cobalt “Robert” Lukather - 1989 @ 18, my first learning experiences for driving a diesel dumptruck - 72 Autocar setback w/318(8v71), then 19yrs old on a 78 Transtar 4300 w/a red 435 8v92. 1996, drove two 84 GMC generals (silver 6v92, 350hp, silver 8v92, 430hp) 1993~2000, 72 Ford 9000 w/silver 6v92, 350hp & a 86 Freightliner FLD setback w/a Silver 892 475hp. 1981 KW w90a w/a 445 8v92. Never owned them, just drove them for two of my best friends.
+Cobalt “Robert” Lukather - Only the 72 ford w/3 axle dump trailer (gvw 107,000) and 86 FLD 5 axle dump trailer (gvw 139,500) were long distance (20 hour round trip) I hauled aggregate. The rest were all local tri axle dumptrucks (tandem w/air lifts) The 350 was slow in the hills, 15 spd and down in 3rd just to try to hold 1800. The 475 did alright, 18 spd 4th high - look up "cavers hill nipigon" With the 475 it would take about 7~8 minutes on the rug @ 1800 to climb 660' to 1100' elevation before shifting 1/2 a gear. The weird thing is out on a flat passing lane, (475 x 892) I could pull out and pass a log hauling truck with similar weight running a 450 DDEC w/18 spd. In that hill my buddy Billy would go by me a gear higher. Dint matter if I ran that 475 at 1800 or 2350 in the hill, still pulled about the same, just different gear. Out on the flat is where the engine speed took over it seemed. I would flip the cruise control in that hill, then get out my windex bottle and clean the windows and the dash, mebbe have a sandwich and a coffee. Its just straight up with a curve at the top i could steer with my knee.
Sounds nice. My dad drove a '79 Pete 359 with a Silver 92 in it some years ago. Always liked the sound of an old school Detroit. Real heavy metal, and that's coming from a metalhead..
Wow I didn't expect a 2 stroke to sound like this it awesome! They didn't even sound close to a 2 stroke bike or a Subaru 360! This is awesome!!! Turbo sound in this thing is awesome
Absolutely amazing sounding truck and I just now subscribed to your channel. Will you please see if we can do a three or four hour ASMR video of this thing but with a really really high rpm up shifting and include engine start up I love that plus the jet break is just icing on top of the cake. Stay safe man have a great one. I hope all is well with you.
standard 12v71 in a tractor was 467 hp @ 2100, 8v92t was 375 @ 2100. both engines could be set up for huge hp. a firetruck spec for 8v92tt is 634 hp @ 2100 12v71ntt is rated @ 710 hp @ 2100.
At fire department I'm at our pumper has a 500 horse single turbo 8v92ta with an automatic transmission and it halls ass. I love the power and reliability of of the engine. The Jake screams and the turbo sounds amazing. 500 horse is plenty off a single turbo, twin turbo would have 550 to 1000 horse. I went to school for diesel for five years and I loved working on 71 series and 53 series Detroits how ever the 92 s are amazing and reliable. I do fancy myself a 60/12.7 or 60/14 liter but you can't go wrong with a new OM71 DD13. Cat C15 compound turbo 550/600 is a good engine as well but you can't get them anymore unless it is used same as the 60
Funny you mention that. I grew up riding Detroit-powered buses everywhere, I have fond memories of falling asleep in the back over the engine on a cold winter's night. I was always confused why nothing else sounded the same (ubiquitous DT466, Cummins trucks etc) There is no substitute for a two-stroke!
Way to go gear jammer! was a fun ride in Idaho, givin' it hell & stabbin' them gears, grindin' em till they fit! yee-haw! Was almost like ridin' with the Snowman! Thanx!
8v92ta is a mean motor, my fire departments pumper has 1 and second 1 has the 6v92ta. They scream and the Jake barks so loud. I straight piped the 6v92ta but I haven't gotten around to straight pipe the 8v92ta
You may have some dificulty with that modification of a 8V92 in an R600 chassis because of the radiator clearance, front mount, and air intake problems...but also frame/exhaust manifold clearance...but it can be done. i remember seeing an 8V71 installed in a R600 glider kit from 1976...and it went like hell...but extremely hot in summertime conditions...Good luck!
Trust me you aren't the only one that thinks that! IMO the Series 60 sounds closest to the Cummins M11. BTW I still remember when Cobb Community Transit's 1994 Flxible Metros were M11 powered and I swore they were Series 60 engines because of their sound
I always enjoyed the sound of the 2 stroke Detroits also; I grew up with them. Starting with the 60 Series, Detroits didn't sound much different from a Cummins; they definitely lost the distinctive sound that made them really stand out
I got sea sick from the shaky camera, Detroit Diesel, Turbo, Transmission whine, Jake Brake, Driven Respectfully ... Totally worth throwing up a little bit from that damn camera !
Ok, let's get the damn epa out of diesel engine building and get Detroit to bring these Jimmie's back! I am serious, I always wanted to drive a truck with one of those engines, and call me a wuss all you want, but almost am brought to tears over the fact that, thanks to the damn government, probably never will get to! It really pisses me off!
it's a two stroke Detroit diesel 8V92 736 cubic inch displacement just like in the 1997 sutphen areial tower 95 ft quint the 8V71 N is a 580 cu in motor one or two stroke Detroit diesel engines 76 stuphen areial tower 100 ft witch it was equipped with the 8V71 N two stroke Detroit diesel engine
Very rewarding. Definitely agree with flewnvy. Hope there are some follow ups. Anything else sound wrong. I was was waiting for the frost on the bonnet to disappear after a bit of running - it must be fairly cold there. Where is there anyway?
Yes, i know, but it has actualli 92 c.i. per Cylinder.. so its a littel bit more Does they have more Bore or more Stroke ? Do you know what Torque a 12V71 produces ?
If you keep (or kept) the maintenance up on the ol sweethearts, they don't burn oil. They will always leak a little bit, but, hell, my '13 Pete with an ISX in it leaks a little. But with the old DD's, you had to run straight 40 in them, 15W40 would just pour out, and there are a few seals that are high wear items, if you don't keep them changed, she leaks alot more. Also, you learned fairly quick to run them on the Add line on the dipstick. Every one I ran would throw the top gallon of oil off really quick, but it would sit on the add line for a long time. Of course, every 60 series I ran did the same thing, so, maybe it is just a Detroit thing! lol
Mechanic told me that you need to know how to assemble a Detroit properly. Need to get the correct amount of sealant in the right place, if you don't get it right it will have assembled a leaker.
Nice truck but wouldn't want to spend ten hours a day listening to it. Great for shows but no operator would entertain noise like that in Europe. Way beyond acceptable cab noise limits.
ThePaulv12 I agree with you totally I could listen to this all day , dont get me wrong I could listen to a 4 stroke cummins all day to , but hey its a preference thing, can't agree on everything.
