Boston Red Sox 4 at Detroit Tigers 0, F -- Roger Clemens takes the mound for what will be his third to last game as a member of the Red Sox, and records 20 strikeouts for the second time in his career
Asinine. Steroids don’t weren’t banned at the time, and they don’t do anything to improve your control, movement or pitching smarts. For a picture they may improve stamina at best, but Clemens lost speed on his fastball over the years, so you can’t even make the argument that steroids made it faster. The steroid argument is TOTALLY irrelevant for pitchers.
The Corner was hallowed baseball ground. Sad to see it go. and Clemens splitter in this game was absoluetly filthy. Its funny watching his first 20 K game where he just blew 97/8 mph gas past the Ms and threw an occasional curve or slider, and this game where is was 94/95 mph gas and that insane split.
Ok holy fucking shit trying to watch this game and every 5 fucking seconds this fucking static is making me go fucking crazy what is the FUCKING DEAL!!???????
Not to take anything away from Clemens, but wow that was one BAD Tiger team. A bonus here is that the TV broadcast is done by the late, great Ernie Harwell. What a treasure he was.
Yea they were pretty bad. Young free swingers. No one was beating Clemens that day tho.....maybe they wouldn't have struck out 20 times but even the 76 Reds werent scoring over 2 or 3 runs against that kind of stuff. His fastball was splinteringly fast with late explosiveness, and his split was so nasty....it looked like the fastball then just drops. He even mix in a killer curve/slider here and there too. Ridiculous.
Rudy Pemberton's double @ 0:59:19 Bill Haselman's 4th inning single @ 1:02:42 Bill Haselman's 8th inning single @ 2:05:25 bottom of the ninth @ 2:28:02 last batter & 20th strikeout Travis Fryman @ 2:34:15
While watching a lot of the classic dominant pitching performances on youtube I've been surprised at how inauspicious the beginnings to most of the outings are. In a way, it makes them all the more impressive I guess.
It's a joke he isn't in yet. I hope they come to their senses in the next 2 years. Its no coincidence the guys who vote NO don't make their votes public....they're holier than tho cowards who don't want to face public backlash to their stupidity, stubborness and holier than thou moralizing.....fuck them...Harold Baines is a HOFer now.
@@dukedematteo1995 Why would the cheater roger clemens be in it? You think he's wife and friend andy pettitte took HGH but not clemens himself while they were working out together. Clemens career was over and all of a sudden started to pitch great again in Toronto and New York.
Jose Carranza - I never said he wasn’t guilty of abusing peds. But we’ll never know everyone who did them. Pitchers and hitters alike were juicing. So just because some guys got caught and others didn’t shouldn’t exclude the idiots who didn’t cover their ass. And then theres guys like Bonds, who never tested positive. Will Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, etc. be excluded from the hall if their careers are impressive enough? And what about the guys in the 70s and 80s who took speed before every game? And don’t forget the pitchers who used illegal substances to increase their grip or scuff the balls? It’s a slippery slope when you want to single one era out. I just think, especially in the case of clemens and bonds- they were hofers before they juiced so it doesn’t make any sense to me. 💯
He's too great not to be a Hofer.....the Hall is a joke without the HR king or arguably the best pitcher ever. I want every pitcher that gets in the Hall asked if Clemens should be in, and every position player if Bonds should be....and if they say No ask them " Do you think you're a better pitcher than Clemens, or a better player than Bonds??"...then we can all laugh our asses off if somebody has the nerve to say yes. Who the fuck are sports writers to moralize about this shit? Not just moralize, retroactively moralize.....hold them to a standard that didn't really exsist at the time. I want to see one article or radio clip of one of these guys saying " if you use steroids you shouldn't get in the Hall no matter what" back in the 90s or early 00s before Balco. You won't ever hear or say that because they don't exsist. None of these writers thought that back then, and if they did they never said anything, and they talked about everything else under the sun. People just became these hysterical, vengeful idiots after Balco, and all these writers and media guys (especially older ones) tried to out moralize and holier than thou eachother on the "sanctity of the game" bullshit. There's a reason these douches keep their ballots private.....they know a massive pushback to their stupidity and crotchety moralizing is coming. The YES guys make their votes public bc most people agree with their logic. Harold Baines is in. Piazza, Pudge and Bagwell are in. Phil Rizzuto is in. You're telling me Baines and Rizzuto are more deserving than the best ever? Give me a fuckin break. All voters should have to make their votes public. No hiding. What are they so scared of? We know what they're scared of.....looking dumb, stubborn and holier than thou...which they are.
This was Clemens’ last win with the Red Sox. I remember tuning my radio in during the ninth, and I thought they were replaying the game from ‘86. When I heard “Detroit,” I knew it was something historic. A lot of Sox fans had soured on Clemens, and on the team in general. At this stage, they hadn’t won a post-season game since ‘86, and Clemens had had some injuries, and been mediocre for most of the previous 4 seasons. He was good in the second half of ‘96, but they were a lot more than a revitalized Clemens away from getting to the top. That doesn’t mean we didn’t regret losing him after what he did with Toronto or the Yankees, obviously. His career turned out better for leaving the Red Sox, in my opinion.
It's funny that they were talking about him in the past, the. He goes out and has a game like this. I really think that he was over the hill at this point and decided to take a cycle in the last month if the season to see what would happen, hence this.
Over the hill at 33? Thats a pitcher's prime. He led the league in K's this yr, and had 7.7 WAR, what possibly gave you the idea he was over the hill leading the league in Ks, with 34 starts, 242 innings ?? There was no point that Clemens was ever "over the hill" in Boston. The dumbass Boston media would say that bc they were in love w/ unimportant W-L record. He was banged up in 1993 and 1995 and spent time on the DL so he didnt get 30 starts or 200 IPs. But he led the league in ERA & hits/9 in strike shortened 1994, and again had a very solid 1996.
Im still baffled Duquette said Clemens was in his twilight after this game and after leading the AL in strikeouts in 242 innings. It wasnt a bad decision to let him walk tho, he did pick up Pedro to replace him. He just looked like an idiot for a year or 2.
And if you try and tell me you were at this game I will never believe you… look at that poor turn out lol. It’s crazy cuz I’d pay any amount of money to hop in a time machine and go back to see this game in old tiger stadium. You definitely don’t know what you have till it’s gone.
Its a shame....the place had incredible character and quirks with the overhang, the 1910s look, the 440 CF, roof shots....Great place. It did look a bit too old to continue playing there into the 21st century tho. I imagine the club house, dug outs and fan corridors were very tight and not up to par with anything recent. It was a great all time ball park tho RIP corner.
1 Rocket. 133 WARs ...30 more than RJ or maddux 2 Johnson .if he had put it together earlier in his career hed be #1 3 Pedro...had the best stuff, he just lacked the durability and longevity to be 1. 4. Maddux. ..I have to put him 4th since he lacked the high K totals, but hes of course an all time great Next tier is Schilling, Smoltz, Mussina and Glavine.
