On 3/15/2019, Boston Fire Alarm struck a box for a reported fire on the roof of the New England Casket Company on the northeast side of the city. Companies initially had a fire in an HVAC-type unit but quickly discovered the fire had spread along the roof line. As the fire progressed, second through ninth alarms were struck, with numerous special calls. As conditions worsened and smoke spread throughout the area, the decision was made to shut down the MBTA Blue Line, which ran near the fire building, and utilize the reverse-911 system to evacuate the Orient Heights neighborhood. Companies used foam operations to suppress the fire; they remained on scene throughout the night. | 3/2019

For close to 20 years guys were asking me what would happen if we had a fire there....this is exactly what I pictured in my mind.

Such a big fire, I drove from Quincy to get there in rush-hour traffic and still had plenty of time to see things.

Sounds like alarms/bells were sounding in the factory, does anyone know if they had installed a sprinkler/fire suppression system over the years? Sad to see what was likely a pillar in the community go up in flames. Old mill type factories are tinder boxes. Spark in the right location and not much you can do to save them.
@911ERV
@911ERV 5 лет назад
Sasha is correct, the fire started above the sprinkler system and spread throughout the roofline.

It was interesting to hear on the scanner how the conditions deteriorated from the initial fire on the roof to the spread throughout. Thanks for watching!

Laquer and shellac, etc. for the finishes. Industrial fire, no doubts there. The antitheft was keeping the crews out too, not even a best of the worst situation. :(

L16 must've been a desperation purchase ? 🤔
@911ERV
@911ERV 5 лет назад
L16 was part of the KME orders in the early 2010s, most were retired due to multiple issues. This one along with R1, R2, and TL10 were deemed okay to continue service. All should be replaced with E-Ones in the next two/three years.

@911ERV
@911ERV 5 лет назад
I miss the Macks too! Seagraves are still around; a number of area departments run them but Boston has largely been Pierce, E-One, and KME since the 1980/90s.

@aragorn90... listened to this fire only about 3 miles from me on broadcastify. Watched the smoke and flames from my back deck. Intense smoke. Radio traffic from the incident commander identified hazardous chemicals/materials in the building, ordered all personnel on the fireground to pack up and initiated evacuation of the Orient Heights neighborhood. Of course they were wearing packs outside. Know what you are talking about before you comment. It helps reduce the troll factor for yourself.

I love all the new ideas the fire truck manufactures have come up with over the years and these jokers are using rope tp control the tips on the ladders.
@911ERV
@911ERV 4 года назад
Boston throws multiple sticks to the fire building so pre-piped waterways aren't cost-effective. They're either in the way, keep the ladder from getting close enough, or get cracked when thrown against the building. They tried pre-piped ladders for a while and decided against them.
@thenussbaum44
@thenussbaum44 4 года назад
@@911ERV Cost effective are you kidding me on a 1M dollar truck that makes no sense. You pin them on the second fly, they work for many other departments. Rope is not the way to do it, not to mention the time it takes to run the hose up the ladder. They just are not progressive.
