You're spot on. I just bought one at B&H and is very impressed with it. I bought it to replace my third Sony RX10 IV which I overworked and ruined. All my issues. I worked them hard. I was now hesitant to spend $1700 to replace the RX10 IV, so I opted for the Lumix FZ2500 expecting much less, but am happy with what I got.

I agree with you on DPreviews bogus 'Mediocre Lens' criticism. When one looks at their review of the Sony R10 mk iii, which they call great image quality, the graphic in the 'Conclusion' is about the SAME degree of 'excellent' in both. Baffling.

I purchased my FZ2500 from Best Buy open box for $749.00. I have taken thousands of pics with it and I have no yellowing of any kind on people in jpeg. You can see many of my photos on the FZ2500 page on facebook. This camera is large but, my hands are large so it's a perfect match. My wife's hands are small and she has no problems with it. She likes her Samsung S8 but, I still love her. The FZ 2500's 4K video is simply stunning. I started years ago with little kodak cameras as a boy, even had a polaroid, then I graduated to a Ricoh 35mm camera then switched to canons. I was nervous switch to Panasonic but now this is the only camera/vid cam I carry. It is excellent for any shooting situation I have encountered. What can I say, I love this camera.

I think fz2000 is a low-cost cinema camera with out interchangeable lens but for what you get for the price you can't beat it.

I agree with you. I have the FZ1000, and I absolutely love it! and I always thought there could be some improvements on certain features that it has, which nearly all of those improvements thoughts that I had about FZ1000 were applied to the FZ2000/FZ2500. I have not used a FZ2500 yet , but knowing Panasonic and the lumix series, I'm so sure they've done an incredible job!!!!!

Hi Matt, I'm new to youtube video and torn between the FZ2500 and the G85 for my next camera; mainly for shooting video and mostly indoors. I currently use a little GF7 with sigma prime lenses for my current videos. Which would you choose? Cheers.

Hello. First of all thanks a lot for your video. It' s really very good. I have just one question because I am a beginner and I don' t know well about some details of photography. I heard that when you take a video in 4k for instance this is the best way after finishing the video to make some captures so that to have also some pictures from the event. Someone else told me to take the video in mp4(Lc,,,I dont remember exacty) and then to make some captures from it. So, would you please tell me whats the best way for capturing some images concerning the settings of FZ2000/2500? Thanks a lot in advance!

Thx for reviews of the G85 and FZ2500...is the FZ2500 weather sealed? Glad I found your channel as I've found contradicting specs such as one review stating that the FZ2500 did not have image stabilization.
@Ulrich.Bierwisch
@Ulrich.Bierwisch 7 лет назад
The crop in 4k is an issue because it comes additionally on top of the crop thru the 1" sensor. You don't have a 24-480mm(KB) lens in 4k, you get a 34-670mm. For me, this is the by far most important negative point of the camera.

I am seriously thinking about buying this camera in 10 days. Lens Construction: 16 elements in 11 groups & 4 ED lenses. I think that makes the lens awesome. 3 questions: 1) Can I manually focus the lens? 2) In the P mode, the camera will automatically adjust the aperture and shutter speed, right? 3) using this camera for nature photography, if my hand accidently presses a button on the back, all I have to do to fix it is shut the camera off and turn it back on, right? Thank you.

Very good video- I completely agree with your assessment of DP Rev's negative comments on the FZ2500. I've always felt they have a strong bias against M4/3 that extends in this case to Panasonic's fixed lens cameras. The only thing I really use them for is their side by side feature comparison. I do like that.

Hy , Do you know if FZ2500 model got HDMI LIVE mode and keep sending video signal trough the HDMI out put during 4K filming ? ( My DMC-FZ300 LUMIX shutdown the monitor and give me a nice black window !!! ) PS : Same limitation on GH7 !!

I love my 2500. I had a HC-X1 4K and I love the 2500 because I get basically the same features that I use to do video at a much smaller cost. I have shot weddings using both camera's and I can't tell the difference in 4K. Now the X1 has many more bells and whistles I know but when you compare $3200 VS $1000 the 2500 is a great starter to 4K.

Hi! Can this camera record while using the clean HDMI OUT? I'm asking this because the Panasonic FZ 1000 and FZ 1000 II, when you connect it to a monitor or video mixer (using its HDMI connector), the cammera cannot record on the SD card in the same time. Thanks!

Matt, I think you have this mostly right. I have had the FZ2500 since November, upgrading from the excellent FZ1000 which I sold before purchasing the FZ2500. I had felt that the resolution of the lens on the new camera was not quite up to that of the FZ1000 so I bought a second FZ2500 to do a comparison. I tested both cameras side by side with my own test charts and, sure enough, the earlier FZ2500 was soft, particularly at the edges compared to the second camera. I found the lens of the second camera to be sharper than the first and on a par with the FZ1000. Of course, I have returned the first camera. I think there have been some quality control issues with the lens and there are certainly some duds out there, as DPReview also discovered. As for the other points - I agree entirely with Matt. The 4K crop was never a problem for me on the FZ1000 so will not be on the FZ2500. I find the battery life to be about the same as the FZ1000 in day to day use. I shoot RAW as this is the only way to get the maximum quality from the sensor. My RAW results from the FZ1000 and FZ2500 are vastly superior to the JPEGs they produce. Yes, the Sony RX10 MK3 is a great camera, with a longer and possible sharper lens (but not by much) but I rejected it because: (1) It's a lot more expensive. (2) No fully articulating screen. (3) No touch screen. (4) Menu system not as good as Panasonic. (5) No ND filters. (6) No Cinema 4K. (7) Not as good ergonomically. I find the Panasonic FZ2500 a pleasure to shoot both stills and video with and it produces great results. For the price it's a bargain.
@HomesickMac
@HomesickMac 7 лет назад
Very good points, I'm also very happy with mine, and I'm specially surprised with the quality of stills. I bought this camera for the video but hoped at the same time that it would give me decent images, on pair with the ones from my NIKON D5300. I'm more than happy with the stills, even in low light and all, great camera. At the same time, I believe I've got one of those "less perfect" ones from the "first batch" because I've bought it the day it came out and got to the webshop in Sweden where I live. Now I've got no other FZ2000 around I could compare it with, but even if it is so, I'm still happy.
@Stalled-wm3qd
@Stalled-wm3qd 7 лет назад
DH - your 7 points for choosing the FZ2500 are all very valid and are a cumulative deal breaker against the longer reach Sony RX10 Mk3. But in the end you want your still images to be sharp and not worse than what you are currently getting. In my case Canon 80D with 55-250mm IS STM (88-400mm 35mm equivalent) when I shoot sports with my children (stills mostly but some video too).

Yes, it is a bit softer and I noticed whites have a bit of haze to them when compared to the FZ1000. But they did a good job making it act like a camcorder and the usability of the camera is great. Nothing comes close in price that can compete with it.

I have some m43 lens and using em5, epl7 at the current moment. was caught between fz2500 and g85. the 4k photo seems to be great. I always took my family to nature and parks for holidays. so my current camera works fine to take those holidays photos. that 4k photo means i could have extracted images from video taken. caught between g85, fz2500 and fz300. (for fz300 got the weatherproofig).

I would love to test it against the xc10. You can buy an used xc10 for around $1600 so its kind of in the range. I love the fact that the fz2500 has Nd filters compared to the only nd on the xc10. But it seems like the XC10 solves any of the issues with the Panasonic especially the crop in 4k, but CFast are expensive. I would love to know your opinion on comparing both cameras. Thanks for such a great content.

I've done a ton of research on which camera to buy and this statement made me do another round of research. But from my (humble amateur) opinion (based on months of research) I've not found none better to match my wishes with this quality/price balance. My criteria: allrounder bridge camera with: 1' sensor, touch screen, decent zoom, proper quality camera in general, EVF. The 1' sensor wish leaves me with only a few options. I ended up with Fz2000, FZ1000 II, Rx 10 IV. The price difference for what you get extra made me gave up on the rx10 IV. I chose the FZ2000 over the 1000II bc it seems to be a bit better in most areas. There is more tech in it. The FZ1000 II is newer, the price pretty equal atm. Gave me a hard pondering. Still no decent experience comparison reviews. Would love to hear yours or others findings and opinion.

I agree a lot with your points, except about the wide angle at 4K - with the FZ-2500, like the FZ-1000, you're still stuck with a widest angle of about 36mm, which just sucks. The FZ-2500 has some improvements of course, but it's still an open question if they are worth the extra $400 compared to the FZ-1000.

You mention the GH5. I wanted wanted wanted to love that camera, but the focus issues just sucked. I had to send it back. There was so much that could have been cool, but if you can't even focus down, then skip it. I shoot people in motion, not standing still. I need a real focus, and that doesn't have it, shouldn't even be considered. The fz1000 has been awesome so far. Just bought the fz2500. thanks.

Good points. The lens on the FZ1000 and FZ2500 performs far better than some of the M43 kit telezooms I got rid of before trading in my M43 system for less bulk and more convenience with the FZ1000. I think, if you pixel peep, it's a little weaker than the FZ1000, but that's still fine. And I don't know why DPreview goes on about jpeg performance when most people using this and most non-mobile cameras would be shooting RAW. If my FZ1000 calls it the day, I'm getting a used FZ2500/FZ2000 for sure. 4K video only limited by card size rather than 30 minutes makes a huge difference to me. Best bang for buck if you do video right now in addition to stills. If I had done stills only, I'd also have considered the TZ200/220, but that has 15 minute 4K video length limit, making it a non-starter for my current main use of the Panasonic as a RU-vid video camera. Otherwise, its performance relative to size is amazing.

Nice comment. I have had an FZ-2500 for three years. My other cameras include a Nikon D850 and Nikon P1000. 90% of the time I choose the FZ for general photography! Reasons are I shoot wild flowers, non-profit activities and art scenic photos. Yes it is softer than the D850 with a $2000mm lens. Yes it has a ton of handy tools to make a surprise shots easy and quick. The one feature I use a lot and get amazing results is flowers. Try using the Macro for ultra close. I love the neutral density feature, long flash range, ISO handy availability, shutter speeds, Zoom range with matching ISO range to match stepping down aperture and extensive tweaks photo styles has. I hope you love it! I have several friends who shoot high end cameras that wish they could match my flower shots.

I think your review was fair, and I've been been a Lumix fan, but let me just say the phase-detection focusing in the RX10 iv has me sold, plus the longer 600mm lens. I do like, in general, Lumix's apps and menu system, i.e. user interface but yes it could use some improvement. Oh and what is Sony's problem about not making an articulated screen? Weird!

the only minus in relationship of RX10 III is the pixel binding in 4k, not only for cropping but because don't use all surface of 1" sensor. and the possibility to shoting at 240 in FHD, but not more important for me. for other feature i thinck that this is the best bridge for video.

I wouldn't be as surprised to read those low appreciations on the new Panasonic FZ2500 written by those DPREVIEW clowns. Any intelligent reader of that site has noticed the decadence of their appreciations, starting by the horrible redaction they use to write their articles. As far as it concerns me, the site has lost lots of credibility since their main office was moved to USA. The quality of their writings was far better when they were written by real editors in England. Now the site is in the hands of bloggers; guys with no more instruction than any social media's big mouth. They are intellectual pygmies. If you compare their infomercials when they write their compromised appreciations on Sony products which are, more than once conducted on the sunny beaches of Mexico or any other nice location..Guess who pays for those trips? These are kids playing with expensive toys. Over time the exchanges between members has become a mud slinging exchange. I'm glad that you shed some light on those bozos.

Ok, old thread, but still a current camera...so...here is my 2 cents. First, Dpreview used to be my 1st stop for researching a new camera. But in the last few years I have also found it irksome that some of its reviews of some of the gear I had already bought were so far off base, I thought maybe it was an "intern" or summer help that reviewed it. So...it's not just me...and you. Secondly, I am seeing smoking reviews from you and many other videographers, vloggers, etc, and I also have a background in professional film and video...linear/nonlinear etc. However, I am retired, and limit my video production (sadly) to an iPhone and iMovie lol. Having said that, there is the odd occasion when I think to myself "I sure wouldn't mind.....*insert technical/creative wish here* But not often. My mortgage payer for the last 25+ years, was stills. So, my question is....*drumroll* ...would you feel this is "too much" video heavy for a primarily stills shooter? Or, is it just one huge bonus, and it it rivals still cameras in the same price/tech-spec bracket? I SO want to pull the trigger on this one, but afraid of the ol' "gee Dave, I know how much you loathe story boards and editing so why did you buy THAT camera" scenario. Will it inspire me to get back into it? Maybe do some old-retired-fart nostalgia pieces? Probably not. I like watching more than producing these days lol. What I do like, is the zoom tech-specs, size and feel..so far. I am also a tad leery of the fact that (now please don't take the the wrong way) so far all of the reviews I have come across, are by professional motion people, and not professional stills people. I'm afraid of approaching my peers, as I know what the response will be..."for love of!...a "point and shoot? really?" But, I am retired....I will never be paid for imaging work again...I'm happy doing "happy snaps" now. But...there is always a but...I do live by the ocean, and I do have the desire for a long lens that is not crap. I do not care to pay the $$$$ required for the gear that was supplied to me by my generous employers. So, I thought the Lumix was it. Please help a brother out here will ya? I love your stuff! Keep up the good work :-)

I normally find DP Review a pretty credible source. I agree, in this case, I think they are being a bit hard on this camera. I'm not sure what they are comparing it to. The battery life although good for most people, but it is a concern for me. I opted for a GH4 rather than a G85 for this reason. I shoot event videos that are often very long. There is also a problem finding other power solutions. If the Panasonics had the dreadful battery life of the Sony A7's or the Blackmagic pocket cinema cameras there would be a ton of power options. I am very much interested in the FZ2500 as a travel camera and travel video camera. I have a GH4 for my wide shots and an HPX 270 and HPX 250 for my medium and close ups so I don't really need it for pro video. Don't you think that the IS and the superzoom will make this a terrific travel camera? Gerry in Calgary.

It does seem like Dpreview are being a bit picky with their review. Mind you, the price tag is a serious step up from the FZ100 (although I appreciate the fact it has some extra feature). I guess it's main rival is the Sony RX10m3, which is even more expensive! The stand-out video feature for me is the built-in ND filters, that is so useful and surprised they put a headphone port on too-not even my Panasonic G80/85 has that!

I am now a big fan of Panasonic cameras, owning the GX8 and some great lenses! It's June 2019 now, and thinking of getting the FZ2500, especially as the price has fallen! I haven't handled the camera, but it looks good to use. I really like the flexibility of these types of cameras-especially both stills and video capabilities. I made a huge mistake purchasing the Sony RX10iii in 2017, and found it heavy, bulky and tiring to carry round. I like the design of the Panasonic better-even if weight is similar to the Sony. The RX10 just didn't have the ergonomics for me. My main gripe was the battery life. Now, I only shot mainly stills photos, but the camera literally drained the battery-only had 100 shots off a full charge at most. There is no way that camera is battery is good for 200 shots, let alone 300 plus advertised! So if I only got 200 off the FZ2500 I would be very happy! The FZ2500 does get criticism for the lens quality and no weather sealing. Well. I would suggest having a look on Flickr at some of the superb real world photos taken by obviously better photographers than those on DP Review LOL! This is one lens replacing an arsenal of lenses-and doing a very good job too. And although weather sealing is useful, I honestly believe a few spots of rain won't do much harm (a FEW drops-not a cloud burst!). Anyway, if it's raining too hard, I want to keep dry, never mind the camera!! A good waterproof camera bag and an inexpensive weather cover for the camera if you do use in the rain solve that problem! And- there is no guarantee with a weatherproofed camera that rain won't affect it-as I found out with a Pentax 2 years ago (bye Pentax!). So it is true that no camera is perfect, and to nit pick at the image quality and lens by some critics is failing to appreciate the IQ from a lens which has so much innovation. And who in there right mind wants to pixel peep at every single image, rather than enjoy the moment captured for ever? Love the reviews. I like the fairness and always emphasis on the good points-and challenging criticisms which are harsh. Thank you :)

I love my FZ1000 and was sadly put off by the DPR comments. I was talking to the Panasonic rep on their stand at SMPTE 2017 yesterday in Sydney, and had a long discussion. Subsequenly have looked at every review on You Tube, and glad that I did including yours. Was looking at the Sony RX10 III, but now will definitely get this gem. I love Panasonic gear for video. for the wide angle in 4k ,can use a wide converter x0.5 and you have a 18mm
@philc4311
@philc4311 6 лет назад
A wide converter will give you the width, but the image quality suffers terribly, at least with a $200 converter. Perhaps a $1000 converter would be better, but the FZ itself is only ~$1000. The narrower field in UHD is a significant negative in some shooting situations, but I'll live with it for the other features and price.

I have a D800e for stills. I've been wanting to take some video jobs and this camera is #1 on my radar at the moment instead of the whole mirrorless switch. The D800e does 1080 24p and can still be a great B cam for bokeh shots because I will be exporting in 1080p anyways. 4k cinema does not crop at all and still gives you 25mm at the wide end on the FZ2500 . The fz2500 beats out the G85 in my opinion if you already have a stills camera.

I really cant understand this lens soft issue some folks are still going on about with the fz2500/2000, I do not deny there has been and still are some faulty copies out there, but quite honestly some folks seem to have been brainwashed in to thinking `every` fz2500/2000 has a soft-lens problem, I have seen some of the fz2500/2000 complainers comparison shots and their settings are wayyyyyy off, but there is no telling some of them and its a case of sending it back with the usual words: "I will just keep my trusty old fz1000, if they cant set up the fz2500/2000 how did they set up there fz1000? every time there is a complainer of the new cam it keeps pushing this `soft lens on them all myth forwards` perhaps if a few of them (not all) were to read their instruction book and set the camera up properly instead of owning it for 2-3 days and practise how to use it, then they might get on better, most people who own the new camera seem to be happy with it, there are more positive than negative reviews on the Internet and UTube available to read, watch, and learn it in and out, as I said, I `do not` deny there is a lens problem with some, but on all of them? Cmon!!

Yes you are darn right, it put me off the camera as I had just bought it the day befor and was thinking of taking it back. But when I had another look at it and took some photos with it I couldn’t believe how sharp the photos came out and I must say Deep review have got it wrong this time. And I do think they were nip picking on it or maybe they got a faulty camera and to say the Leica-Elmarit lens. is a second rate lens to me is one of the top lenses going and is easily on a parr with the Zeiss lens that the Sony RX 10 mark 3 use. And to say it’s not waterproof, I am glad they invented umbrellas.

I can't agree on the crop. To me this is a dealbreaker and valid criticism. Only because other brands do it worse, it doesn't mean that I can't be done better. Sony has also excellent 1 inch cameras with no crop (RX10 and RX100). Since the lens is not interchangable, they essentially take the wide angle away from you and there is nothing you can do about it which can be a huge problem if you shoot indoor. Panasonic should have been able to fix that after all these years...
@mightyboessu
@mightyboessu 7 лет назад
They criticize the lens on the FZ2500 because it is not as good as the one on the FZ1000 in the aspect of the lens itself. Yes, it has more zoom range, it is quieter, has finally a more useful minimum aperture of F11 (comparing to F8 in the FZ1000) and last but not least a really good ND solution built in. But all of that to the the cost of a less sharp lens? It is noticeably less sharp than the predecessor, also in good lightning conditions. I think that's the main reason why they call it a "mediocre" lens. I personally think at least the plus in zoom range wasn't worth the lost in sharpness and I can imagine that's what dpreview thinks too. From the perspective of stills photography, the lens alone is a step back compared to the FZ1000, which had an outstanding good lens on it just worthy in any aspect the words "Leica Vario-Elmarit" on it. They already proofed themselves that they can do it better. Still as dpreview claims in the conclusion: the FZ2500 is more of a video camera than a stills camera. In that aspect a lot of the critic in dpreview fails because the target audience of videographers won't see all of these points as a big issue, including the lens sharpness which is still more than enough for great 4k quality. I think the argumentation on your video proofs that.

As I said above and as is shown in the comments after the review, there is a quality control issue here. It is worth noting that the FZ1000 was made in Japan while the FZ2000 was made in China. That may or may not be significant. However, if you buy this camera and think the lens is not as good as the FZ1000 then get it replaced.

As far as DP Review's criticisms, what they complained about I can't say has ever been an issue with using the FZ2500. The one complaint I have about Panasonic cameras in general, the service. Any Panasonic owner who has had to send their camera to McAllen, Texas, should immediately have hairs stand up on their neck at the thought. It took them two weeks, after they signed for it, to acknowledge they had my FZ2500 in for repair. Then another week to put it on the bench, then three weeks to determine that they couldn't fix it, and another two weeks to send the new (it's refurbished) replacement. I sang high praises of this camera for the first 7 months of having it, then the morning of a shoot, after formatting the SD card, the camera lens didn't retract back into the body when I powered it off. After that it wouldn't power on any more, 3 fully charged Panasonic batteries later and it still was dead. It was just shy of 2 full months before they got the camera back to me. When I wrote them complaining that their warranty service department didn't communicate, they wrote back "We hear you're interested in our extended warranty program. Here's 3 more years of miserable warranty service." Reiterating how incredibly tone deaf they are to their customers. I need a second camera just to compensate for their insufferably slow warranty department. Since getting the replacement, it seems to be working as if it were new, out of box again. However every time I turn the power switch there's a twinge of fear that I'll be out another $300 shoot, followed by a month with only editing work because my videography services are shot. Last time I could have purchased a new G85 with a lens ( or paid my bills ) for the number of jobs I turned down in those two months. Great camera, slow, incompetent, and lousy communications from their service department.

as the son of a Royal Navy officer yes it's ZED not ZEEE. DPreview are part of the buy-a-camera-then-spend-thousands-for-a-lens-you-can-actually-see-something-with franchise. Therefore opposed to bridge cameras per se. As an engineer however I view a camera system assembled and fine tuned by a team of engineers as vastly superior to anything you and me might try at. Yes DPreview is wrong but God love-em... they have to pay their bills somehow

As normal with comparisons, testers never do like for like, the FZ 2000/2500 is compared to cameras much more expensive. So there can be no comparison, RX10 IV £1800 ish, RX10 III £1200/£1300, the criticisms leveled at FZ2000 could no doubt be fixed if Panasonic spent that much more on their camera. But this reply can be aimed at any review, people usually want what they cannot afford, what they and up with is a compromise, like most things in life, plus do not blame the tools, you are behind the view finder !!

They're not nitpicky, the RX10IV/III have a better lens. The colours a substancial for a bridge camera, because a lot of people use these with ooc JPGs. Also the crop is a problem. Reviewers routinely feel they have to list a bunch of negatives, even if they are either false, or insignificant, otherwise they don't feel they they are "doing their job". I get so tired of trivial observations that turn into major flaws. I agree that the FS2500 and FZ 1000/2 are extremely good and better than a lot of DSLR addon lenses at three times the price of the whole FZ camera. As you say, you can switch off noise reduction in almost any camera and you can shoot a flat image in RAW. The FZ 1000/2 is now priced at a knock down £650-£700 at some retailers. That's a hell of a lot of camera for the price.

Hi! I have a FZ1000. I found it very usefull, and the sharpness of the lens and the detail of the picture is incredible... realy beating some pro $10.000 solutions. But in terms of color handling looks to me, that Panasonic is not my case. I'm always grading my stuff, and in past year I got very unhappy whith my possibilities when I'm trying to correct Panasonic stuff. I see tha same "errors" in stills, even in graded gh4 and gh5 log pictures. Maybe it's only my taste...

I somehow agree with dpreview. One thing that I want to highlight is the lens. I'm a previous owner of the FZ1000. And I consider its lens to be too slow and too soft on its maximum focal length (equivalent 400mm f4.0). If you have good lighting yes that's fine. But if no good lighting, I find the images unappealing. And with the FZ2000, its much worst. I have not used it. But I do find the max focal length of 480mm and the aperture of f4.5 to be least attractive than its predecessor. If only panasonic made a faster lens, with a shorter focal length, maybe I could consider this.
