In this episode, I explore natural ways to lower cholesterol without relying solely on medications. I discuss the significance of lifestyle interventions and highlight the benefits of consuming foods like oats and barley, which are rich in beta-glucan and can reduce LDL cholesterol levels by five to ten percent. Additionally, I address the controversial topic of nuts and seeds in heart health, backed by scientific evidence and my clinical experience. Tune in to learn more about incorporating these foods into your diet for better heart health.

In Dr. Esselstyn book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease ask his chronic heart patients not to consume nuts or avocados and of course no salt or oils. I do appreciate your videos thank you 😊

I have a family history of high cholesterol. The data on nuts and seeds says that’s ok to have them in healthy amounts? It won’t increase my ldl cholesterol?

I am underweight after being sick several months ago. (109lbs at 5’5”). I cannot seem to gain weight now. Shall I incorporate more nuts and seeds? I do a tablespoon of flax, chia, hemp and sesame seeds every morning.

So sorry to hear you were ill. Hope you are doing better. I would make sure a doctor sees you are ok and discuss the issue of weight loss. But yes incorporating more calorie dense foods like nuts and seeds and nut butters will help.

I guess if we have weight to lose, we have to skip the avocado, tofu and nuts?
@DrLaurieMarbas
@DrLaurieMarbas 14 дней назад
No just keep the nuts to 1/4 cup a day or less, and avocado to a minimum (1/5 avocado), and I think soy beans, tofu, and tempeh are excellent for many reasons including low glycemic, high protein, etc. 2 servings daily is optimal

Can a starch solution style diet highten cholesterol? I'm in perimenopause and have a cholesterol of 229 not sure why I eat no oil and the only fat I have is in my elmhurt coffee creamer, I am completely vegan 10 years very little processed foods like whole food pasta and bread ? My wonder is are all the high carb foods like potato and rice and bread is cause my cholesterol to rise. Also no one in my family history has high cholesterol 😮

It could be several factors insulin resistance, lack of estrogen, along with more processed foods. My Free Masterclass "5 Steps to Master Metabolism and Lose Weight" could help you if you think you need to lose weight. Or HRT might benefit you if this relatively new. There are MANY other things to consider and assess as well. Here is the link for the masterclass. drmarbas.lpages.co/mastermetabolism/

Dr, you are so kind. Can you let me know if belly fat, which could mean extra fat in the liver lead to more cholesterol being made? Thank you 😊
@DrLaurieMarbas
@DrLaurieMarbas 13 дней назад
Yes, higher visceral fat and ectopic fat (in the liver and muscles) will cause an increase in cholesterol for a variety of reasons including inflammation and production of VLDL which is a precursor of sorts to LDL (bad cholesterol). My Free Masterclass can help. drmarbas.lpages.co/mastermetabolism/

If I may, Dr McDougall said that cholesterol lowering meds, don't decrease heart disease/attack risk, something only prevented by a good nutrition. True??

I think I read that a tablespoon of cold pressed extra virgin olive oil a day is good for lowering cholesterol. I've been taking flax oil everyday. Is that just as good as eating the flax seeds?
@DrLaurieMarbas
@DrLaurieMarbas 13 дней назад
Not a fan of oil because it literally is just the liquid fat. I would rather you use the whole food.

There is no shame is using medications as needed ALONG with lifestyle interventions. I am thankful I have medications to use with patients if and when needed. But not my first go to.
