I recommend going to local estate sales. Many people of the older generation have died and have a huge collection the kids need to get rid of.

If you know you'll be using certain tools alot, then it's fine to buy the better brands. If not sure, then second hand or cheap brands is good, then upgrade. I have a makita table saw that i barely use, only paid $80 for it used. Works good.

Second hand is great regardless. Marketplace is the best for getting your tool collection up w/o going broke. I found my CNC, planer, drum sander, 12” bandsaw, brand new Bosch edge router and drill/driver, beautiful cabinet grade plywood super cheap, insulation for my garage, brand new Delta contractor tablesaw, jointer, track saw, lots of bessey and Jorgensen clamps, and more all on marketplace within 6 months w/o killing my wallet.

so you can go with super cheap Hart brand tools to begin with, or at least I did. Unfortunately still don't have a tablesaw or a router.

What does a table saw do that you can’t do with a circular saw? If you’re saving money can you just use a circular saw for cuts or is there something that you can’t do with a circular saw?

In theory yes.... but you would need to create jigs etc and spend money on the wood / hardware to cut that wood in the same way a table saw would do it. Plus if you are doing this as a full time job, time is money, so if you can spend less time setting the jigs / blade / saw up, you can move onto a new task / job quicker.

I disagree about pipe clamps. I started out with them but they really aren't as cheap as one thinks. Threaded black iron pipe isn't cheap (galvanized doesn't really work). The clamps aren't all that much cheaper than others, after the pipe is added in. Their performance is poor, too. Notice how much the pipe bends as force is applied to the wood. This deformation is skewing the jaws outward, causing uneven pressure on the ends of the clamp. Iron pipe isn't nearly rigid enough. Look at the way parallel jaw clamps are made, in comparison. Yeah, I started out with pipe clamps but they didn't last long. ...and that was when black iron pipe was dirt cheap. Sure, it'll take a chunk more out of that $1000 but it'll be worth it.

A speed square in a woodworking shop? I know you’re trying to keep to a budget, but do you really want to skimp out on what’s arguably the most important tool in the shop? At least go for some cheaper brand of combination square and leave the speed squares for the framers.

As a professional carpenter whos ran a shop with 10+ people, dont buy dewalt drills, they go bad pretty quick. We have 5 out of 16 drills go bad within a year. Go makita
