Michelle says her 9-year-old son, Raymond, has screamed, cursed, and punched others since the age of 3 -- and even recently gave his grandmother a black eye! Michelle says she’s exhausted spending so much time trying to keep up with Raymond’s latest diagnoses and trying new medications that doctors prescribe for him. But Michelle’s family members say they want to know if Raymond’s issues are real or if he’s just choosing to act out? Certified Behavioral Analyst Megan St. Clair and Child and Family Psychiatrist Dr. Charles Sophy work with Raymond and his family and weigh in on the possibilities with Dr. Phil. (20013)

yeah, you would be just teaching them to be violent when things don't go your way. teaching your kids that beating someone defenseless and smaller is fine, teaching them violence always has a reason so they don't feel guilty when they do it (this is for their own good, they're asking for it, they didn't listen to me, etc.), like your mom successfully taught you that. when i hear abused children say "i was beat and i turned out fine" as an argument to defend hitting children, it doesn't prove anything but that they in fact didn't turn out so fine. i was never like this either, and i was never EVER beat or hit or slapped. kids dont turn out this way because they're not hit as children. what hitting kids teach them is that they can't trust their parents, they can't tell them the truth, they don't know when they're getting hit so their parents are unpredictable to the child. by hitting your kids, you're teaching that home isn't a safe place for you, your parents don't protect you, they harm you. its wrong to hit children because it's wrong to be violent towards children. if you are so quick to anger and impatient that you feel the need to start hitting children, then maybe you shouldn't be having them. i'm sorry your mother abused you like that.

@@lisastormstorm3515 These are natural feelings and you’re being a great sister to try to address this. It may sounds silly, but I think one of the best things you can do is spend a little time and energy showing interests in HIS interests. For example, I’m doing some Halloween events with my clients and most of them are boys so I picked a costume I didn’t really care about but knew that they would be interested in. Now I’m going to be walking around as a big green dinosaur. Lol. So just do your best to reach him at his level. As a parent with a difficult child, I assure you this is 100% a reality. Granted, my son is not THIS extreme, but it’s an everyday (sometimes every hour) struggle. For myself, my husband, his twin sister, and my son himself. Those of you saying he’s spoiled, or just lacks discipline has obviously never dealt with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, BiPolar Disorders in Children, or Conduct Disorders. My son would TRY to respond to typical discipline tactics as this child, but would not succeed. I have to remain calm and consistent while I remind him this behavior will not be tolerated, and will have consequences. I also calmly reassure him that NO MATTER WHAT behavior he uses for attention, I will always love him. I tell him that this type of behavior will drive all his friends away because no one will want to play with him when he acts this way. I also remind him, calmly, that if this behavior continues, it will eventually lead to jail with others who behave poorly. And finally, I remind him that through all of this, I will still love him and help him because he is my son, and a gift from God. It’s not always easy. Honestly, it’s not ever easy… But I can say that after tailoring my parenting skills to fit his needs has been a success. Sometimes a minimal success, but still a win. Remember that parenting is not a one size fits all. What works with my daughter (or yours) may not work for my son (or yours.) And ask for help….

That lady, this video, this child, this entire situation was one of the absolute most disturbing things I’ve seen in a long time. That’s saying a whole lot. Listening to that blond twit of a “therapist” actually pissed me off. Shame on you, Phil McGraw.

I have been working with children for approximately 25 years and I am very interested in new strategies and positive techniques for behavior modification. I was captivated by the tone of voice of the therapist and the time she spent actually interacting in several positive ways. I think my favorite bit of advice she gave was making sure to show the child that you believe in his/her capability to accomplish a task. Showing a child that you have faith in their ability to finish a homework assignment on their own pr correctly complete their normal chore list will inevitably build their self-confidence and most certainly give them a sense of accomplishment and independence. I would love to know if this therapist (I was so interested in how she implemented changes immediately that I completely missed her name; however, I'm hoping someone on here will read this post and pass that information along for me) has written a book on some of the techniques shown in this segment or may possibly have a website with some helpful information listed. I appreciate any additional information from this segment that others may have made note of. I try to have some resources available within my classroom available to parents to read and make note of in their quest to modify negative behaviors from their child at home. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!! Ms. Sia

He needs to be in a placed where he can get individualize help outside the home.. of how he needs to behave in the real world. When parents have to start removing all the knives you got to ask yourself when do you sleep??? It's better for a child to go Into a mental health facility to get positive one on one professional help outside of the home, so everybody in this home is safe. This child is manipulative he will say whatever it takes he's learning how to play the adult game and clearly shouldn't be in the home at this time, for the safety of all those living there. Don't be fooled. He's playing everybody and his mother antagonizes things so the best place for him to be is in a facility where he can be shown and given tools on how to behave. He could care less about any consequences. Him staying in the home is putting everybody in danger you'll see he's got you all figured out and he's playing every single one of you he needs help outside the home.
