Doug G No! Your information is from the 1950s. The genetics component is more like 5%. Genetics hardly factors into it. Look at all the studies with twins, siblings, parents+children. Diet is the biggest component by far.

It's not just about working out. You also have to eat healthy and clean too. Fitness is 20% excercise, 80% diet.

Kuhrizma Clemons its different for everyone, for example if you have a high metabolism you dont need to worry about a healthy diet but on a more filling died like more carbs, meat and dairy products to help you build the muscle otherwise with a high metabolism you start to burn your muscle when you run out of fat. the higher the metabolism the less you need to worry about your diet and more you need to worry about where your energy is coming from.

Kuhrizma Clemons Yes, being healthy is more than exercise, but those are bullshit numbers. Adequate sleep plays a huge role as well. Everyone's situation, genetics, and goals are vastly different.

Lol ik this is a late response and I can't stand when people are like I wanna lose weight, im gonna go to the gym and then they still eat crap. Your weight is 75% based on your diet and 25% based on excercise and physical activity.

This isn't a really great sales pitch for P90X, but you noticed they didn't mention anything about food consumption which is where the majority of results come from.

I think the one guy said he still ate bad and drank beer. So I think that their results could have been vastly different if the had changed the way they ate as well.

***** if you spend 90 days and gain 2 lbs of muscle you are doing it wrong. Their results were absolutely awful, no matter how bad their diets were.

***** To gain muscle you need protein, say you're 5'9" and 189 lbs with a bmi of 27; to maintain that weight and body fat percentage you need to workout and consume a certain amount of protein . If you want to lose fat and gain muscle then you need to calculate how much protein you need to consume to reach your goal. If you're doing an intense workout but not taking in the protein you're not going to build muscle you will lose it and with the intense workout and bad diet your body may think it is being starved and hold on to fat it would usually pass through the body. With a proper diet taking in calories about every 2 hour with low carbs and sugars and a high protein count your body will not feel it is being starved, and will burn fat instead of storing it and grow those muscle you're building in the gym. If your exercise doesn't have to match it then you're not going to see the results you want.

Kira It's not all about protein... You need to increase carbs to be able to have the energy and enough food to store as muscle; you need sugar in you body also to let you cells function properly, so there is no need to limit the sugar intake. Not to mention the fact that too much protien long term can lead to obiesity. If you really want to gain muscle: eat lots from a vegan lifestyle/ diet, basically carb up

***** anyone on a calorie deficit diet plan will lose weight which is why it is instilled for people who need to lose a lot of weight quickly but for someone who wants to maintain a healthy, natural weight, a diet of clean, whole foods is the way to fuel your body for optimal health and when you do eat clean it actually becomes difficult to eat enough calories because the food is so naturally low in calories (but nutritionally dense) especially if you are doing extreme work outs. im 5'5' 119lbs and i eat more than 2500 calories a day just to keep up with my metabolism so that i continue to build muscle (my personal fitness goals) once you get to a certain weight if you aren't getting enough calories your body will begin to consume muscle which is a very bad thing. so i would say don't concentrate on calories, concentrate on WHAT you eat if you're wanting to build a sustainable way to keep fat off and feeling full/happy =] better to treat the cause than the symptoms.

True. I did One meal a day didn't cut a lot of calories cut only 300 calories of my needs and lowered my carbs. I wasn't even on Keto per say. Just significantly cut carbs. And I exercised once a week. It did get me good results. Went from 188 to 152 in 49 months

@@mike2207 not 4 years. I lost right now I am on 143 lbs and still losing and I just use one meal a day. The rest of 23 hours is water and zero calories drink. I started last year and now I lost 40lbs in a year. Did not cut carbs, did not cut any food group. Just eat enough to sustain me and raise less of my insulin daily. Losing weight is simple but you need consistency

They didn't take it seriously. The first time I did p90x I went through a noticeable change, everybody I know complimenting me, asking if I was working out as I kept it a secret. This program is truly awesome and I'm about to do it again.

I feel like having friends working out with you would be more motivating than working out on your own. They push you to continue when you tell yourself that you should quit. But if you're working out on your own, you're mind is telling you: "Treat yo self you deseRvE it"

I do workout on a daily basis, but the problem is I don't have a good diet because I am not rich and live in a 3rd world country and don't have many selection of food, normally I only have launch no breakfast and sometimes dinner. I just eat rice and chicken or bread. But I workout anyway. I already have visible 4 pack and biceps and chest. It's just sometimes I can't continue working out because of hunger. And that's why I'm still stuck with a four pack.

When I was younger, my trainer told me “Results are 80% what you eat, and 20% what you do in the gym”. To this day, I’ve never been able to prove him wrong.

BASSFZz It's not my style to be honest (p90x). I'm into my strength training and gaining mass, think Steve Shaws powerbuilding routine) P90x is pretty heavy on cardio and the likes. Great for losing fat and all but training the nervous system is a different ball game. Think powerbuilding. That's my style for the moment. Once I've gotten bigger I'll go into powerlifting/ strongman type training. :)

Wicked Houston high protein and low carbs, eat high volume with few calories thats how i went from 235-206 lbs in the last month and a half and ive been hitting the gym for a while. I started at 278 so i have more to learn

Focusing on one part of your body doesn't work. To lose fat in your stomach, you have to lose fat everyone. :/ sad truth. I've struggled with that for a while.

Not genetics, just hormones and diet. Men have an easier time of developing volume in muscles when they workout, women just don't have the necessary hormones for that much of a muscle growth (I'm speaking volume and not strenght) in 90 days. For the diet, that's what it would take for them to decrease bodyfat % and look leaner an gain more definition; They didn't lose much fat at the end which is honestly surprising because P90X is GOOD. Proves that the diet really plays a bigger role in losing that fat while the work you put in is more important for the muscles.

Oh! Well, the reason he didn't have 'anything to do' was because he had good numbers scientifically speaking; The perfect BMI is 22.5 (his is 22.2), he had a decent Muscle mass, a good BF% ... From a health perspective, he really didn't have anything to do (or to be more accurate, he had to maintain his weight and muscle mass a.k.a eat less junk food and workout regularly). The other one though had too low a BMI (still in the healthy range, however, thus why the guy didn't recommend a fat gain) and not enough Muscle mass to support his frame so they recommended him to get more muscles to get healthier. Those recommendations were not about aesthetics :D

Time/Space Yeah if they find actually working out to be that hard then they will revert back. Gotta find something that's fun so they will keep going. Pretty obvious they didn't follow any kind of food plan. Anyone working out that much for 90 days and eating healthy will loose a heck of a lot more weight than they did.

That seems like an accurate judgement. Because from what I’ve read about P90X it’s a program which comes with a nutrition guide.. so they just followed the fitness program which doesn’t depict the results one could actually expect from it.

They probably ate a bunch of street food and that's why they didn't see much results I did p90x and boxing and quit eating street food as much as I used to and looked like the Asian dude did in just 3 weeks lol which is why I found it weird how they did the full 90 days but didn't get big results

I know people are giving different figures here, but I've always heard from fitness experts (including the makers of P90X) that you build your body in the kitchen -- that nutrition makes up 70% of the results you will see from your efforts, while exercise makes up the remaining 30%. These four people didn't eat right...none of them did. One of them actually admitted he ate like crap and continued drinking alcohol. You'll never transform that way. They also most likely didn't focus hard enough when exercising...they were cracking jokes and probably goofing around too much.

Jason Baer While that's true, they would've lost more fat and been able to build more muscle if their diet had been right. Something as simple as eating 5 times a day in smaller portions with more protein than you usually eat (or, most of us eat anyway) would go a long way. And lots of hydration.

I’m in the process of doing a 90 day lifestyle change and exercise grind. I went vegetarian (for the animals) and I’ve been gradually cutting processed food and sugar. I’ve been exercising for at least an hour per day and working in more and more cardio as I go because I’m asthmatic so I have to be gradual with cardio. So far it’s been a week and a half and I feel muscle building up back to where it used to be from when I was super athletic. I feel waaay healthier and energized and all around better. It’s a struggle but I’m glad I’m doing it.

A lot of people who don't normally work out eat A LOT more when they suddenly start working out. Working out in general (but especially cardio) triggers hunger hormones in your body to try to maintain whatever weight you are so that might have been the case.

Based on the fact that they used Bioelectrical impedance the body fat percentage is most likely incorrect and BMI's of each person shouldn't matter because it doesn't account for muscle or fat it just accounts for weight as a whole.

***** I'm not but I've experimented with bio-electrical impedance and the things that effect it. Using a "typical" day as a baseline I then rechecked my body fat percentage using impedance methods both after having drank a lot of water of several days before and then less than normal the following week. The result was that on days that I was well hydrated my body fat percentage went up and on the das that I was dehydrated it was lower. Plus, most trainers will tell you that the method that they used is not an accurate representation of body comp. They'd have gotten better result with calipers.

The lack of results from this experiment from other people actually using P90x to get into shape is that they didn't take into account of their diets. They more than like consumed the same thing throughout the 90 day period.

Also, pretty sure the P90X comes with diet information, but the results from no other changes in their daily lives are quite interesting.

Steph McCarty i know just "looking" at a person doesn't count for much, but in regards to the women, i personally found it a little curious that the black girl had a BMI 3 points higher than the asian girl when, shirtless, she appeared to be about the same size, but more "compact," than the other girl.

Pretty old video, but for those who watch this in the future, realize that whoever did their assessments sucks. BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) is one of THE WORST!!!! ways to assess body fat. The dude must have used the BF% in his calculations, and so all the other numbers were off too. That asian guy was right - the numbers were definitely wrong.

​@@SenshiSunPower DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, even just a caliper test is far more accurate. Bioimpedance is garbage.

This video always crops up. Someone sent this to me today saying "it's all about genetics". How do we know the people in this video even did the workouts properly? For all we know they could have done 1 rep per exercise.

LOL bioelectric impedance (the body comp scale they used) is one of the most inaccurate methods out there. body fat can literally vary 5% due to hydration and food

Even submersion testing still has about a 3% margin of error. The only 100% accurate way of testing body fat percentage is autopsy which is, for obvious reasons, impractical. You kind of have to trade off between accuracy and practicality in this case.

+oscar bainbridge from what I can find on the subject, DEXA is used to measure bone density. It doesn't seem to be able to directly measure body fat, so it calculates it from the things it does measure (bone density and lean soft tissues) making it about as accurate as submersion testing. That's what 10 mins of Googleing has lead me to believe, so if you've got any evidence to the contrary I'd be happy to see it.
