This is a short video documenting a repair method I use to fix salt-corroded wheel arches on Saab 900's. This is by no means the best repair one can do but it is cost effective and produces good results.

Thanks for another great video, Troy! Perfect timing as I picked up an ‘85 900 with 463k miles recently and rust is about the same as yours. Glad to have wisdom now in how to address it!

Ryan Walters hi Ryan glad it was useful - yeah it's been a good reliable method for me so I hopefully you can solve the rust issues on your 900.

I've used the very same method in the past - cleaning up with a grinder, rust treatment and aluminium mesh with a flexible filler. That said, I never tried for the near invisible finish you've managed here (the cars were rats and satin black paint went on them). It did prove excellent as a strong, almost permanent repair.
@theclassicsaabguy236

yeah I was really lucky on this one that it was on the lip of the wheel arch so the paint blended in wheel over the part where the arch goes flush with the wing. Its still holding up well

My dad owned two Saab 900s bought in the early 90s; the 1st was a 900 4 door GLS in the same colour as the one in the video, but shortly after he had the rust sorted on the wheel arches and had it resprayed blue (no idea if he used filler). He then traded it in for a 900 Turbo. Both cars when he bought them had done over 100,000 miles.

Yeah these cars can run up some high mileage and still be very reliable

Hi. Those wheel arch trims tend to mask the manufacturing spot-welds, which show through the paintwork. However, after doing and repair, particularly welding repair, it is common to smooth the curve with some filler (especially if the weld-line runs within the concave aspect). This means the spot-welds also get filled / masked, and after re-painting, it seems unnecessary to replace the trim. A little seam-sealer underneath helps to seal the gap between the panels, and paint on top seals it up. As the trims are a trap for rain-water from above and salt-water from below, I wonder if people in Sweden often leave them off, as I've seem here in the UK. This also helps when they do break, as you'll be left with three (which is really annoying!) and the earlier chrome trims (on the 99) seem to be impossible to find.
@theclassicsaabguy236
@theclassicsaabguy236 4 года назад
James Cross I think a lot of people keep them on for aesthetic purposes - but I've heard a lot of UK Saab owners remove them - what I've learned to do is put a sealant inside which I've felt works well for those who wish to keep the trim ! They are a bugger for trapping salt water in though ! It's really the salt that's the problem in a Sweden !

I've just got a 1992 900S and started working on the front wheels' rust today. It's starting to look like the rust goes up and inside, in between the fender and the wheel arch. Do you think i should grind it all away / take the fender off? Or just try to spray converter into the hole and patch up the hole?
@theclassicsaabguy236
@theclassicsaabguy236 3 года назад
Hmm this is a tough one as I do these fixes because it's so expensive to by the fenders and do welding here - sounds like a new fender might be an easier fox in your case - depends on the extent of the rust - in this example I removed all the rust you see

As well as Eastwood (which I've not tried, yet), I've just discovered Jenolite which converts rust and leaves a 'paintable' PVA-like surface.

Nice job! I’ve got an 85 turbo same colour needing similar work, do you know what the paint code / name is to get a spray can?
@theclassicsaabguy236
@theclassicsaabguy236 4 года назад
Jamie Lang the paint code for this model was 172 - but you should check for your paint code - it should be under the bonnet on the right wing

Wonderful step by step for someone who is about to tackle a similar project with a '67 96. I do have a question on what you use to re-affix the 3 body mouldings on the 900 - rear quater, door and wing - as I have this final step to do on my 900 convertible restoration. What adhesive strips are you using and do you have particular process other than measure, check level and eyeball the placement?
@theclassicsaabguy236
@theclassicsaabguy236 4 года назад
Daryle Powers hi Daryle - over the years I've used different methods to reattach those trim pieces but I've found the most simple and reliable is the all weather multibond adhesive you can pick up at DIY stores - the stuff you apply with a mastic gun - it's good as you can apply to the the back of the trims and when eyeballing placement you can adjust placement as it doesn't go hard very quickly but does stay attached if you get what I mean. I usually leave a little of the old glue from when I took the trim off on the body so I have a guide when reattach unless that area is now painted and clean then it is a case of comparing with photos or measuring before hand ! Good luck with the project !

@@theclassicsaabguy236 I recently asked my local SAAB guru what he uses to mount the wheel arch trim and he said that he packs them with grease and pushes them into place. Then wipes the excess off. This sounds good to me as it will also prevent rusting. Cheers!
@theclassicsaabguy236
@theclassicsaabguy236 4 года назад
Jay Schuon yeah I use a bit of grease and some multibond sealer for reattaching the trims - it seems to keep them sealed from future corrosion
