Mike Thurlow: Thank you so kindly for this. This is the first year I’m trying to force a hyacinth. Just last week I bought the bulb and vase, and begin the process. I did exactly as you suggested, but I’m wondering if the room was slightly too warm or if the ball was getting a little too much light, because within three days, while the ring of white roots begin to grow around the outside of the bottom of the bulb, it looked like there were some dark roots growing in the middle. I thought they might be rotten, as they were more brown as opposed to the white ones around the edge. Upon lifting the bulb off the jar to look at the two different colours of roots, I could see the tiniest speck of green, which I take to be mold, on two of the tiniest little tops of a couple of the little buds on that ring, which I nipped off of the bulb. So last night, it went on the cool basement window ledge where it would receive only artificial light, but would stay nice and cool. My hope is that having an opportunity to dry off again very thoroughly, if I am to place it in a newly clean vase with freshwater, that perhaps it will have a chance. Do you have any experience with this particular problem, sir? I’d sure like to hear how you deal with it if you do. Is there anything that I can use to treat that poor little bulb’s ring of root or the water to prevent this from happening again?
